Multi-agent planning is a well-studied problem with applications in various areas. Due to computational constraints, existing research typically focuses either on unstructured domains with many agents, where we are content with heuristic solutions, or domains with small numbers of agents or special structure, where we can find provably near-optimal solutions. In contrast, here we focus on provably near-optimal solutions in domains with many agents, by exploiting influence limits. To that end, we make two key contributions: (a) an algorithm, based on Lagrangian relaxation and randomized rounding, for solving multi-agent planning problems represented as large mixed-integer programs; (b) a proof of …
Methods Of Computing Deque Sortable Permutations Given Complete And Incomplete Information, Daniel J. Denton
Methods Of Computing Deque Sortable Permutations Given Complete And Incomplete Information, Daniel J. Denton
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
The problem of determining which permutations can be sorted using certain switchyard networks is a venerable problem in computer science dating back to Knuth in 1968. In this work, we are interested in permutations which are sortable on a double-ended queue (called a deque), or on two parallel stacks. In 1982, Rosenstiehl and Tarjan presented an O(n) algorithm for testing whether a given permutation was sortable on parallel stacks. In the same paper, they also presented a modification giving O(n) test for sortability on a deque. We demonstrate a slight error in the version of their algorithm for testing deque …
Barriers To Adopting Agile Practices When Developing Medical Device Software, Martin Mchugh, Fergal Mccaffery, Valentine Casey
Barriers To Adopting Agile Practices When Developing Medical Device Software, Martin Mchugh, Fergal Mccaffery, Valentine Casey
Conference papers
Agile methodologies such as XP and Scrum are founded upon the four values and twelve principles of agile software development. A software development project is only considered to be truly agile if these values and principles are followed. However, software developed for use in medical devices must be regulatory compliant and this can make the process of following a single agile methodology such as XP difficult to achieve. This paper outlines how we identified the barriers to agile adoption in the medical device software domain through performing a survey. These barriers include: lack of documentation; maintaining traceability; regulatory compliance; lack …

Re-entry of a spacecraft occurs at the hypersonic regime where the flow field is extremely complex: high temperature gradients occurring in the shock-layer region ionize and dissociate the air. Even if a large portion of heat generated during this process is convected away in the surrounding air, a fraction of it is still transferred to the vehicle. Therefore, it is important to protect the vehicle with a suitable kind of shielding. Of the many techniques available today, use of ablative material is gaining popularity. The basic idea behind an ablating heat shield is that the energy incident on the spacecraft …

Software Engineering Education Needs More Engineering, A. Frank Ackerman, Ph.D., Sushil Acharua, D.Eng.
Computer Science & Software Engineering
To what extent is “software engineering” really “engineering” as this term is commonly understood? A hallmark of the products of the traditional engineering disciplines is trustworthiness based on dependability. But in his keynote presentation at ICSE 2006 Barry Boehm pointed out that individuals’, systems’, and peoples’ dependency on software is becoming increasingly critical, yet that dependability is generally not the top priority for software intensive system producers. Continuing in an uncharacteristic pessimistic vein, Professor Boehm said that this situation will likely continue until a major software-induced system catastrophe similar in impact to the 9/11 World Trade Center catastrophe stimulates action …

Geometric Programming Subject To System Of Fuzzy Relation Inequalities, Elyas Shivanian, Mahdi Keshtkar, Esmaile Khorram
Geometric Programming Subject To System Of Fuzzy Relation Inequalities, Elyas Shivanian, Mahdi Keshtkar, Esmaile Khorram
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, an optimization model with geometric objective function is presented. Geometric programming is widely used; many objective functions in optimization problems can be analyzed by geometric programming. We often encounter these in resource allocation and structure optimization and technology management, etc. On the other hand, fuzzy relation equalities and inequalities are also used in many areas. We here present a geometric programming model with a monomial objective function subject to the fuzzy relation inequality constraints with maxproduct composition. Simplification operations have been given to accelerate the resolution of the problem by removing the components having no effect on …
Introducing An Efficient Modification Of The Variational Iteration Method By Using Chebyshev Polynomials, M. M. Khader
Introducing An Efficient Modification Of The Variational Iteration Method By Using Chebyshev Polynomials, M. M. Khader
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this article an efficient modification of the variational iteration method (VIM) is presented using Chebyshev polynomials. Special attention is given to study the convergence of the proposed method. The new modification is tested for some examples to demonstrate reliability and efficiency of the proposed method. A comparison of our numerical results those of the conventional numerical method, the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method (RK4) are given. The comparison shows that the solution using our modification is fast-convergent and is in excellent conformance with the exact solution. Finally, we conclude that the proposed method can be applied to a large class of …

A New Four Point Circular-Invariant Corner-Cutting Subdivision For Curve Design, Jian-Ao Lian
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
A 4-point nonlinear corner-cutting subdivision scheme is established. It is induced from a special C-shaped biarc circular spline structure. The scheme is circular-invariant and can be effectively applied to 2-dimensional (2D) data sets that are locally convex. The scheme is also extended adaptively to non-convex data. Explicit examples are demonstrated.

Numerical Solution Of Interval And Fuzzy System Of Linear Equations, Suparna Das, S. Chakraverty
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
A system of linear equations, in general is solved in open literature for crisp unknowns, but in actual case the parameters (coefficients) of the system of linear equations contain uncertainty and are less crisp. The uncertainties may be considered in term of interval or fuzzy number. In this paper, a detail of study of linear simultaneous equations with interval and fuzzy parameter (triangular and trapezoidal) has been performed. New methods have been proposed for solving such systems. First, the methods have been tested for known problems viz. a circuit analysis solved in the literature and the results are found to …
An Evaluation Approach For Interactions Between Abstract Workflows And Provenance Traces, Leonardo Salayandia, Ann Q. Gates, Paulo Pinheiro
An Evaluation Approach For Interactions Between Abstract Workflows And Provenance Traces, Leonardo Salayandia, Ann Q. Gates, Paulo Pinheiro
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In the context of science, abstract workflows bridge the gap between scientists and technologists towards using computer systems to carry out scientific processes. Provenance traces provide evidence required to validate scientific products and support their secondary use. Assuming abstract workflows and provenance traces are based on formal semantics, a knowledge-based system that consistently merges both technologies allows scientists to document their processes of data collection and transformation; it also allows for secondary users of data to assess scientific processes and resulting data products. This paper presents an evaluation approach for interactions between abstract workflows and provenance traces. The claim is …

Search For Trust: An Analysis And Comparison Of Ca System Alternatives And Enhancements, Alexandra C. Grant
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
The security of the Public Key Infrastructure has been reevaluated in response to Certification Authority (CA) compromise which resulted in the circulation of fraudulent certificates. These rogue certificates can and have been used to execute Man-in-the-Middle attacks and gain access to users’ sensitive information. In wake of these events, there has been a call for change to the extent of either securing the current system or altogether replacing it with an alternative design. This paper will explore the following proposals which have been put forth to replace or improve the CA system with the goal of aiding in the prevention …

This project implements a simple miniature golf game in 3d for the iPhone. Using a modular approach the game engine was written in several modules to handle its various functions and for cross platform potability. Four major modules are described in detail about their design choices and how they work. Ultimately the game and its engine are intended to be sold on the Apple App store and to be used for future games and applications on the iPhone.
The Intersection Between Science And Computer Science Is Almost Empty, Dick Hamlet
The Intersection Between Science And Computer Science Is Almost Empty, Dick Hamlet
Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series
Traditionally, a science such as physics overlaps with mathematics and engineering in a way that has been astonishingly productive. The math provides precise expression for the science, which in turn supplies the engineering with the information it needs to exploit physical phenomena. Computer science naturally wishes to put itself in the center of the traditional picture as a science. Unfortunately, it won't wash. The `science' of programming is pure and simple mathematics, not science. The distinction is more than linguistic, since science and mathematics have quite distinct goals and methods. By making the wrong choice, computer science research has been …

Who Did What? The Roles Of R Package Authors And How To Refer To Them, Kurt Hornik, Duncan Murdoch, Achim Zeileis
The R Journal
Computational infrastructure for rep resenting persons and citations has been avail able in R for several years, but has been restructured through enhanced classes "person" and "bibentry" in recent versions of R. The new features include support for the specification of the roles of package authors (e.g. maintainer, author, contributor, translator, etc.) and more flexible formatting/printing tools among various other improvements. Here, we introduce the new classes and their methods and indicate how this functionality is employed in the management of R packages. Specifically, we show how the authors of R packages can be specified along with their roles in …

Xgrid And R: Parallel Distributed Processing Using Heterogeneous Groups Of Apple Computers, Sarah C. Anoke, Yuting Zhao, Rafael Jaeger, Nicholas J. Horton
The R Journal
The Apple Xgrid system provides access to groups (or grids) of computers that can be used to facilitate parallel processing. We describe the xgrid package which facilitates access to this system to undertake independent simulations or other long-running jobs that can be divided into replicate runs within R. Detailed examples are provided to demonstrate the interface, along with results from a simulation study of the performance gains using a variety of grids. Use of the grid for “embarassingly parallel” independent jobs has the potential for major speedups in time to completion. Appendices provide guidance on setting up the workflow, utilizing …

Marss: Multivariate Autoregressive State-Space Models For Analyzing Time-Series Data, Elizabeth E. Holmes, Eric J. Ward, Kellie Wills
The R Journal
MARSS is a package for fitting multivariate autoregressive state-space models to time-series data. The MARSS package implements state-space models in a maximum likelihood framework. The core functionality of MARSSis based on likelihood maximization using the Kalman filter/smoother, combined with an EM algorithm. To make comparisons with other packages available, parameter estimation is also permitted via direct search routines avail able in ’optim’. The MARSS package allows data to contain missing values and allows a wide variety of model structures and constraints to be specified (such as fixed or shared parameters). In addition to model-fitting, the package provides bootstrap routines for …

Analysing Seasonal Data, Adrian G. Barnett, Peter Baker, Annette J. Dobson
The R Journal
Many common diseases, such as the flu and cardiovascular disease, increase markedly in winter and dip in summer. These seasonal patterns have been part of life for millennia and were first noted in ancient Greece by both Hippocrates and Herodotus. Recent interest has focused on climate change, and the concern that seasons will become more extreme with harsher winter and summer weather. We describe a set of R functions designed to model seasonal pat terns in disease. We illustrate some simple descriptive and graphical methods, a more complex method that is able to model non-stationary patterns, and the case-crossover to …

We present an improved Foreign Function Interface (FFI) for R to call arbitary native functions without the need for C wrapper code. Further we discuss a dynamic linkage framework for binding standard C libraries to R across platforms using a universal type information format. The package rdyncall comprises the framework and an initial repository of cross platform bindings for standard libraries such as (legacy and modern) OpenGL, the family of SDL libraries and Expat. The package enables system level programming using the R language; sample applications are given in the article. We out line the underlying automation tool-chain that extracts …

Sumo: An Authenticating Web Application With An Embedded R Session, Timothy T. Bergsma, Michael S. Smith
The R Journal
Sumo is a web application intended as a template for developers. It is distributed as a Java ‘war’ file that deploys automatically when placed in a Servlet container’s ‘webapps’ directory. If a user supplies proper credentials, Sumocreates a session-specific Secure Shell connection to the host and a user-specific R session over that connection. Developers may write dynamic server pages that make use of the persistent R session and user-specific file space. The supplied example plots a data set conditional on preferences indicated by the user; it also displays some static text. A companion server page al lows the user to …
