Toward A Mobile Platform For Pervasive Games, Inseok Hwang, Youngki Lee, Taiwoo Park, Junehwa Song
Toward A Mobile Platform For Pervasive Games, Inseok Hwang, Youngki Lee, Taiwoo Park, Junehwa Song
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Emerging pervasive games will be immersed into real-life situations and leverage new types of contextual interactions therein. For instance, a player’s punching gesture, running activity, and fast heart rate conditions can be used as the game inputs. Although the contextual interaction is the core building blocks of pervasive games, individual game developers hardly utilize a rich set of interactions within a game play. Most challenging, it is significantly difficult for developers to expect dynamic availability of input devices in real life, and adapt to the situation without system-level support. Also, it is challenging to coordinate its resource use with other …

Automatic Compositional Verification Of Timed Systems, Shang-Wei Lin, Yang Liu, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong, Étienne André
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Specification and verification of real-time systems are important research topics with crucial applications; however, the so-called state space explosion problem often prevents model checking to be used in practice for large systems. In this work, we present a self-contained toolkit to analyze real-time systems specified using event-recording automata (ERAs), which supports system modeling, animated simulation, and fully automatic compositional verification based on learning techniques. Experimental results show that our tool outperforms the state-of-the-art timed model checker.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Model checking timed systems through digitization is relatively easy, compared to zone-based approaches. The applicability of digitization, however, is limited mainly for two reasons, i.e., it is only sound for closed timed systems; and clock ticks cause state space explosion. The former is mild as many practical systems are subject to digitization. It has been shown that BDD-based techniques can be used to tackle the latter to some extent. In this work, we significantly improve the existing approaches by keeping the ticks simple in the BDD encoding. Taking advantage of the ‘simple’ nature of clock ticks, we fine-tune the encoding …

The main challenge of a search engine is to find information that are relevant and appropriate. However, this can become difficult when queries are issued using ambiguous words. Rijsbergen first hypothesized a clustering approach for web pages wherein closely associated pages are treated as a semantic group with the same relevance to the query (Rijsbergen 1979). In this paper, we extend Rijsbergen’s cluster hypothesis to multimedia content such as images. Given a user query, the polysemy in the return image set is related to the many possible meanings of the query. We develop a method to cluster the polysemous images …

Control-Theoretic Utility Maximization In Multihop Wireless Networks Under Mission Dynamics, Sharanya Eswaran, Archan Misra, Thomas La Porta
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Both bandwidth and energy become important resource constraints when multi-hop wireless networks are used to transport high data rate traffic for a moderately long duration. In such networks, it is important to control the traffic rates to not only conform to the link capacity bounds but also to ensure that the energy of battery-powered forwarding nodes is utilized judiciously to avoid premature exhaustion (i.e., the network lasts as long as the applications require data from the sources) without being unneccesarily conservative (i.e., ensuring that the applications derive the maximum utility possible). Unlike prior work that focuses on the instantaneous distributed …

Our paper explores the interaction of persistent firing axonal and presynaptic processes in the generation of short term memory for habituation. We first propose a model of a sensory neuron whose axon is able to switch between passive conduction and persistent firing states, thereby triggering short term retention to the stimulus. Then we propose a model of a habituating synapse and explore all nine of the behavioral characteristics of short term habituation in a two neuron circuit. We couple the persistent firing neuron to the habituation synapse and investigate the behavior of short term retention of habituating response. Simulations show …

During the past few years, the mobile industry has gone through a radical change from business focusing on excellence in device manufacturing and supply chain management to ecosystems around successful focal players, such as Apple and Google, controlling these service platforms. In order to compete in this environment, these firms need to understand what makes a consumer switch between these mobile service platforms. To that end, we conducted an inductive qualitative study with university students from Finland and USA as subjects (142 altogether), delving into how and why consumers switch mobile phones, and what are the factors affecting their decisions. …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
We propose and study a new type of location optimization problem given a set of clients and a set of existing facilities, we select a location from a given set of potential locations for establishing a new facility so that the average distance between a client and her nearest facility is minimized. We call this problem the min-dist location selection problem, which has a wide range of applications in urban development simulation, massively multiplayer online games, and decision support systems. We explore two common approaches to location optimization problems and propose methods based on those approaches for solving this new …

A Physiological Signal Processing System For Optimal Engagement And Attention Detection., Ashwin Belle
Theses and Dissertations
In today’s high paced, hi-tech and high stress environment, with extended work hours, long to-do lists and neglected personal health, sleep deprivation has become common in modern culture. Coupled with these factors is the inherent repetitious and tedious nature of certain occupations and daily routines, which all add up to an undesirable fluctuation in individuals’ cognitive attention and capacity. Given certain critical professions, a momentary or prolonged lapse in attention level can be catastrophic and sometimes deadly. This research proposes to develop a real-time monitoring system which uses fundamental physiological signals such as the Electrocardiograph (ECG), to analyze and predict …

A Multicriteria Decision Making Approach For Estimating The Number Of Clusters In A Data Set, Yi Peng, Yong Zhang, Gang Kou, Yong Shi
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
Determining the number of clusters in a data set is an essential yet difficult step in cluster analysis. Since this task involves more than one criterion, it can be modeled as a multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) problem. This paper proposes a multiple criteria decision making (MCDM)-based approach to estimate the number of clusters for a given data set. In this approach, MCDM methods consider different numbers of clusters as alternatives and the outputs of any clustering algorithm on validity measures as criteria. The proposed method is examined by an experimental study using three MCDM methods, the well-known clustering algorithm–k-means, …
Data Mining Of Protein Databases, Christopher Assi
Data Mining Of Protein Databases, Christopher Assi
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Data mining of protein databases poses special challenges because many protein databases are non-relational whereas most data mining and machine learning algorithms assume the input data to be a relational database. Protein databases are non-relational mainly because they often contain set data types. We developed new data mining algorithms that can restructure non-relational protein databases so that they become relational and amenable for various data mining and machine learning tools. We applied the new restructuring algorithms to a pancreatic protein database. After the restructuring, we also applied two classification methods, such as decision tree and SVM classifiers and compared their …
User Assisted Tree Reconstruction From Point Clouds, William P. Leavenworth Ii
User Assisted Tree Reconstruction From Point Clouds, William P. Leavenworth Ii
Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses
LIDAR is a useful tool for quickly digitalizing real world objects, but it usually takes some effort to produce a recognizable object from the raw input. When the object is a tree, the challenge is to create a three‐dimensional model that represents its general shape, while avoiding the influence of undersampling and noise. In the method developed for this research, the user creates a sketch overlaying a display of the raw input data. Each node in the sketch creates an estimated slice of the tree skeleton at that point, and the slices are connected according to the connectivity of the …

The Utilization Of Context To Adapt The Interface Of A Computer, Ludovic Delaveau
The Utilization Of Context To Adapt The Interface Of A Computer, Ludovic Delaveau
Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses
This research examines the possibility for a computer to adapt its interface and its settings to the current environment, through the notion of situations and corresponding profiles. These situations are group of context elements and tasks or activities performed in that operating conditions, such as the activities conducted at the workplace or the relaxation time at home. The profiles are set of configuration values for the computer, such as the network services. Adapting the computer serves the user as it takes care of putting his computer in the right mode to be efficient in the activity performed. In order to …

Sulfur removal in crude oil, is one of most important application when designing catalytic material to target hydrodesulphurization reactions. This particular study comprehends the quantum computational calculations for the transitional states during the HDS reaction in the molecular model of MoS2/Co9S8, which is a theoretical molecular model to describe the synergic contact between both crystallographic structures. Results produced using the exchange correlation Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof(PBE) functional indicate the existence of endothermic and exothermic transitions during the attachment of DBT molecules. In addition, it proves that promotion (addition of Co, Ni) provokes the electronic configuration of electron …

A Wlan Fingerprinting Based Indoor Localization Technique, Landu Jiang
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Satellite-based Global Positioning Systems (GPS) have enabled a variety of location-based services such as navigation systems, and become increasingly popular and important in our everyday life. However, GPS does not work well in indoor environments where walls, floors and other construction objects greatly attenuate satellite signals.
In this paper, we propose an Indoor Positioning System (IPS) based on widely deployed indoor WiFi systems. Our system uses not only the Received Signal Strength (RSS) values measured at the current location but also the previous location information to determine the current location of a mobile user. We have conducted a large number …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Modeling and analyzing software architectures are useful for helping to understand the system structures and facilitate proper implementation of user requirements. Despite its importance in the software engineering practice, the lack of formal description and verification support hinders the development of quality architectural models. In this work, we develop an approach for modeling and verifying software architectures specified using Monterey Phoenix (MP) architecture description language. Firstly, we formalize the syntax and operational semantics for MP. This language is capable of modeling system and environment behaviors based on event traces, as well as supporting different architecture composition operations and views. Secondly, …

Given a simple, connected graph, a pebbling configuration is a function from its vertex set to the nonnegative integers. A pebbling move between adjacent vertices removes two pebbles from one vertex and adds one pebble to the other. A vertex r is said to be reachable from a configuration if there exists a sequence of pebbling moves that places one pebble on r. A configuration is solvable if every vertex is reachable. We prove tight bounds on the number of vertices with two and three pebbles that an unsolvable configuration on a diameter two graph can have in terms of …

Real Time Stereo Vision Using Dynamic Programming On A Graphics Processing Unit (Gpu), Janet Marie Mendoza, Rodrigo Antonio Romero, Olac Fuentes
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
Stereo vision is an important research topic in computer vision. It attempts to emulate the human vision system by using two or more images of the same scene to estimate depth information in three dimensions. The development of this topic is of much importance to many applications that vary from medical to entertainment. Currently, many researchers are searching for a method that will increase the speed of the process and still obtain high-quality results. Dynamic programming, which is a method for solving complex problems by breaking them down into simpler sub problems, has been successfully applied in stereo vision. We …
Real Time Face Hallucination For Recognition, Alexander Knaust, Olac Fuentes
Real Time Face Hallucination For Recognition, Alexander Knaust, Olac Fuentes
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
Low resolution video and images are a common hindrance in recognition of people or enjoyment of a communication service, but are often necessary due to high hardware costs or low bandwidth availability. In particular, surveillance images of faces are commonly of too low a resolution to recognize reliably, hampering their purpose. Face Hallucination consists of Super-Resolution techniques to enhance the images of faces beyond what can be achieved by standard interpolation techniques. Unfortunately, the facial hallucination algorithms in present literature are slow, taking up to an hour with modestly sized images. We propose optimizations of the Eigentransform Super Resolution algorithm …

Generating Minimal T-Wise Test Suites, Luis C. Gutierrez, Carlos Nieto, Francisco Zapata, Martine Ceberio
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
As the use of computing devices increases every day, users rely on the adequate functioning of software. When software is not tested properly, it can yield erroneous information or a complete failure of the system. The NIST estimates that defective software cost the United States economy close to $60 billion a year. Therefore, there is a need to develop software testing techniques that are time and cost effective. Fully testing software under all possible combinations of parameters values cannot be reduced. However, testing can focus on covering all combinations of subsets of parameters and empirical data shows that doing so …
An Intelligent System To Manage Soft Constraints, Gabriel Higareda, Eduardo Breijo, Martine Ceberio
An Intelligent System To Manage Soft Constraints, Gabriel Higareda, Eduardo Breijo, Martine Ceberio
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012
Most problems can be expressed in terms of requirements that must be met by their expected solutions. Constraints are requirements and constraint programming is a declarative programming paradigm that simply consists in modeling problems as lists of their requirements. Many constraint solvers exist that provide solutions to such list of requirements.
However, constraint solvers are stiff: if a problem was ill modeled, no solution will be returned and the original problem called over-constrained. Nevertheless there is hope even in these cases: such overconstrained problems can be handled as soft constraints, meaning that their processing will not be stiff anymore and …
