Fast And Accurate Psd Matrix Estimation By Row Reduction, Hiroshi Kuwajima, Takashi Washio, Ee Peng Lim
Fast And Accurate Psd Matrix Estimation By Row Reduction, Hiroshi Kuwajima, Takashi Washio, Ee Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Fast and accurate estimation of missing relations, e.g., similarity, distance and kernel, among objects is now one of the most important techniques required by major data mining tasks, because the missing information of the relations is needed in many applications such as economics, psychology, and social network communities. Though some approaches have been proposed in the last several years, the practical balance between their required computation amount and obtained accuracy are insufficient for some class of the relation estimation. The objective of this paper is to formalize a problem to quickly and efficiently estimate missing relations among objects from the …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Over the past two years we have collaborated to develop a process and set of online games to enable additional feedback to both students and instructors in a classroom setting. We have named the resulting process Tournament-based Teaching due to the extensive use of tournament-based feedback for groups and individuals throughout course delivery. Tournament-based Teaching enables individualized and peer-based learning in a classroom setting and provides additional motivation for students to prepare for classroom sessions. It also provides feedback to instructors, which can be leveraged to provide better schedule classroom sessions.

The advances in location-based data collection technologies such as GPS, RFID etc. and the rapid reduction of their costs provide us with a huge and continuously increasing amount of data about movement of vehicles, people and goods in an urban area. This explosive growth of geospatially-referenced data has far outpaced the planner’s ability to utilize and transform the data into insightful information thus creating an adverse impact on the return on the investment made to collect and manage this data. Addressing this pressing need, we designed and developed DIVAD, a dynamic and interactive visual analytics dashboard to allow city planners …
Multiview Semi-Supervised Learning With Consensus, Guangxia Li, Kuiyu Chang, Steven C. H. Hoi
Multiview Semi-Supervised Learning With Consensus, Guangxia Li, Kuiyu Chang, Steven C. H. Hoi

Obtaining high-quality and up-to-date labeled data can be difficult in many real-world machine learning applications. Semi-supervised learning aims to improve the performance of a classifier trained with limited number of labeled data by utilizing the unlabeled ones. This paper demonstrates a way to improve the transductive SVM, which is an existing semi-supervised learning algorithm, by employing a multiview learning paradigm. Multiview learning is based on the fact that for some problems, there may exist multiple perspectives, so called views, of each data sample. For example, in text classification, the typical view contains a large number of raw content features such …

A Unified Learning Framework For Auto Face Annotation By Mining Web Facial Images, Dayong Wang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Ying He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Auto face annotation plays an important role in many real-world multimedia information and knowledge management systems. Recently there is a surge of research interests in mining weakly-labeled facial images on the internet to tackle this long-standing research challenge in computer vision and image understanding. In this paper, we present a novel unified learning framework for face annotation by mining weakly labeled web facial images through interdisciplinary efforts of combining sparse feature representation, content-based image retrieval, transductive learning and inductive learning techniques. In particular, we first introduce a new search-based face annotation paradigm using transductive learning, and then propose an effective …

More Anti-Chain Based Refinement Checking, Ting Wang, Songzheng Song, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong, Xinyu Wang, Shanping Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Refinement checking plays an important role in system verification. It establishes properties of an implementation by showing a refinement relationship between the implementation and a specification. Recently, it has been shown that anti-chain based approaches increase the efficiency of trace refinement checking significantly. In this work, we study the problem of adopting anti-chain for stable failures refinement checking, failures-divergence refinement checking and probabilistic refine checking (i.e., a probabilistic implementation against a non-probabilistic specification). We show that the first two problems can be significantly improved, because the state space of the product model may be reduced dramatically. Though applying anti-chain for …

In this paper, we propose an in-situ Crowd-aware Sensing Platform, called "CrowdMon", which envisions the cooperation among mobile users in highly crowded urban areas such as metro and square. CrowdMon establishes a spontaneous connection from co-located users in a semantic proximity and enables them to share contextual information such as location, ambient music, and mood of places. To the best of our knowledge, CrowdMon is the first attempt to support crowd-aware services at a platform level. We show interesting use cases of CrowdMon and an initial system design to realize the crowd-based context sharing.

We demonstrate a multimedia-based question-answering system, named FashionAsk, by allowing users to ask questions referring to pictures snapped by mobile devices. Specifically, instead of asking verbose questions to depict visual instances, direct pictures are provided as part of questions. To answer these multi-modal questions, FashionAsk performs a large-scale instance search to infer the names of instances, and then matches with similar questions from communitycontributed QA websites as answers. The demonstration is conducted on a million-scale dataset of Web images and QA pairs in the domain of fashion products. Asking a multimedia question through FashionAsk can take as short as five …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we explore the real-world Still-to-Video (S2V) face recognition scenario, where only very few (single, in many cases) still images per person are enrolled into the gallery while it is usually possible to capture one or multiple video clips as probe. Typical application of S2V is mug-shot based watch list screening. Generally, in this scenario, the still image(s) were collected under controlled environment, thus of high quality and resolution, in frontal view, with normal lighting and neutral expression. On the contrary, the testing video frames are of low resolution and low quality, possibly with blur, and captured under …

Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP) has been widely applied to modeling and analyzing concurrent systems. There have been considerable efforts on enhancing CSP by taking data and other system aspects into account. For instance, CSP M combines CSP with a functional programming language whereas CSP# integrates high-level CSP-like process operators with low-level procedure code. Little work has been done to systematically compare these CSP extensions, which may have subtle and substantial differences. In this paper, we compare CSP M and CSP# not only on their syntax, but also operational semantics as well as their supporting tools such as FDR, ProB, and …

Mining Coherent Anomaly Collections On Web Data, Hanbo Dai, Feida Zhu, Ee-Peng Lim, Hwee Hwa Pang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The recent boom of weblogs and social media has attached increasing importance to the identification of suspicious users with unusual behavior, such as spammers or fraudulent reviewers. A typical spamming strategy is to employ multiple dummy accounts to collectively promote a target, be it a URL or a product. Consequently, these suspicious accounts exhibit certain coherent anomalous behavior identifiable as a collection. In this paper, we propose the concept of Coherent Anomaly Collection (CAC) to capture this kind of collections, and put forward an efficient algorithm to simultaneously find the top-K disjoint CACs together with their anomalous behavior patterns. Compared …

Google's MapReduce has gained significant popularity as a platform for large scale distributed data processing. Hadoop [1] is an open-source implementation of MapReduce [11] framework, originally it was developed to operate over single cluster environment and could not be leveraged for distributed data processing across federated clusters. At multiple federated clusters connected with high-speed networks, computing resources are provisioned from any of the clusters from the federation. Placement of map tasks close to its data split is critical for performance of Hadoop. In this work, we add network awareness in Hadoop while scheduling the map tasks over federated clusters. We …
An Optimal Lower Bound On The Communication Complexity Of Gap-Hamming-Distance, Amit Chakrabarti, Oded Regev
An Optimal Lower Bound On The Communication Complexity Of Gap-Hamming-Distance, Amit Chakrabarti, Oded Regev
Dartmouth Scholarship
We prove an optimal Ω(n) lower bound on the randomized communication complex- ity of the much-studied gap-hamming-distance problem. As a consequence, we obtain essentially optimal multipass space lower bounds in the data stream model for a number of fundamental prob- lems, including the estimation of frequency moments. The gap-hamming-distance problem is a communication problem, wherein Alice and Bob receive n-bit strings x and y, respectively. They are promised that the Hamming distance between x and y is either at least n/2 + √n or at most n, and their goal is to decide which of these is the case. Since …
Motion Capture Of Character Interactions With A Rope, Bryce Zachary Porter
Motion Capture Of Character Interactions With A Rope, Bryce Zachary Porter
Theses and Dissertations
We present a solution to animating interactions between characters and thin, non-rigid bodies using a passive optical motion capture system. Prior work in human body motion capture can accurately recreate human motion but this work is not adequate because it does not allow for interactions with a non-rigid body. Prior work in face and cloth motion capture handles non-rigid planes but rope is better handled with a curved spline rather than a curved plane. The segmented motion is in the form of un-indexed motion capture data. After segmenting the motion of the thin, non-rigid body and the human character the …

A private High Technology firm whose headquarters are located in the Midwest has just completed several upgrades to replace an in-house legacy application system in which the primary use was to track defects of the firm's custom made software. The firm's implementation of a third party's software suite to replace the in-house legacy application was studied using a case study method, which implemented key performance indicators to the change theory called "The Dynamics of Planned Change" introduced by Lippitt, Watson, and Westley. The key performance indicators were introduced as a way to determine if the firm's actions could be validated …

Ensure: A Time Sensitive Transport Protocol To Achieve Reliability Over Wireless In Petrochemical Plants, Leigh Sheneman
Computer Science Theses
As society becomes more reliant on the resources extracted in petroleum refinement the production demand for petrochemical plants increases. A key element is producing efficiently while maintaining safety through constant monitoring of equipment feedback. Currently, temperature and flow sensors are deployed at various points of production and 10/100 Ethernet cable is installed to connect them to a master control unit. This comes at a great monetary cost, not only at the time of implementation but also when repairs are required. The capability to provide plant wide wireless networks would both decrease investment cost and downtime needed for repairs. However, the …

mHealth devices offer many potential benefits to patients, health providers and others involved in the patients' healthcare. If patients are not in control of the collection and sharing of their personal health information, they will have privacy concerns even while enjoying the benefits of the devices. We investigated patients' willingness to share their personal health information, collected using mHealth devices, with their family, friends, third parties and the public. Our findings are based on a user study conducted with 41 participants. The best way to understand people's privacy concerns is to give them the opportunity to use the device and …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Recent research suggests that the personality trait Locus of Control (LOC) can be a reliable predictor of performance when learn- ing a new visualization tool. While these results are compelling and have direct implications to visualization design, the relation- ship between a user’s LOC measure and their performance is not well understood. We hypothesize that there is a dependent relation- ship between LOC and performance; specifically, a person’s orientation on the LOC scale directly influences their performance when learning new visualizations. To test this hypothesis, we conduct an experiment with 300 subjects using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk. We adapt techniques from …

The concept of green computing has become a popular label employed by all major IT corporations when promoting either their hardware as energy efficient or asserting that their software solutions improve work performance and reduce the carbon footprint. Yet, how one addresses sustainability in computing is still a developing area and without clear guidelines or standards. Preparing students on topics of computing sustainability is thus essential for ensuring the future professionals have the skills to tackle such an important challenge. In this paper we propose a sustainability module we developed for an introductory computing course. We start by providing a …

Identification Of Faction Groups And Leaders In Web-Based Intelligent Argumentation System For Collaborative Decision Support, Ravi Santosh Arvapally, Xiaoqing Liu, Wei Jiang
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Argumentation is an important and critical process in a collaborative decision-making environment. Several argumentation frameworks and systems have been proposed for collaborative decision making earlier. However, limited decision support is provided to stakeholders. in an argumentation process, stakeholders tend to form groups, called faction groups based on their opinions and exchange of arguments. Each faction group is usually led by a faction leader in the group. Identification of faction groups and leaders in argumentation becomes an important challenge which has not been addressed adequately in the past. the faction assessment in argumentation provides the decision maker with more information about …

Building Semantic Corpus From Wordnet, Lubomir Stanchev
Computer Science and Software Engineering
We propose a novel methodology for extracting semantic similarity knowledge from semi-structured sources, such as WordNet. Unlike existing approaches that only explore the structured information (e.g., the hypernym relationship in WordNet), we present a framework that allows us to utilize all available information, including natural language descriptions. Our approach constructs a semantic corpus. It is represented using a graph that models the relationship between phrases using numbers. The data in the semantic corpus can be used to measure the similarity between phrases, the similarity between documents, or to perform a semantic search in a set of documents that uses the …

Microbial Source Tracking (MST) is a field in which microbial strains are identified and associated with a specific host source (e.g., human, canine, avian, etc). Identifying the hosts of microbial strains lies at the heart of many studies of bacterial contamination in the environment. Being able to determine which host species is responsible, e.g., for fecal contamination of a creek, allows the parties involved to develop specific measures for addressing the contamination. The paper presents an in-silico study to investigate the sensitivity of the pyroprinting method. Given a collection of possible DNA sequences that can be found in the sequenced …

great opportunities for consumers to find the best service and best pricing, which however raises new challenges on how to select the best service out of the huge pool. It is time-consuming for consumers to collect the necessary information and analyze all service providers to make the decision. This is also a highly demanding task from a computational perspective, because the same computations may be conducted repeatedly by multiple consumers who have similar requirements. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a novel brokerage-Based architecture in the Cloud, where the Cloud brokers is responsible for the service selection. in particular, we …
