Transition Systems For Model Generators — A Unifying Approach, Yuliya Lierler, Miroslaw Truszczyński Jul 2011

Transition Systems For Model Generators — A Unifying Approach, Yuliya Lierler, Miroslaw Truszczyński

Computer Science Faculty Publications

A fundamental task for propositional logic is to compute models of propositional formulas. Programs developed for this task are called satisfiability solvers. We show that transition systems introduced by Nieuwenhuis, Oliveras, and Tinelli to model and analyze satisfiability solvers can be adapted for solvers developed for two other propositional formalisms: logic programming under the answerset semantics, and the logic PC(ID). We show that in each case the task of computing models can be seen as “satisfiability modulo answer-set programming,” where the goal is to find a model of a theory that also is an answer set of a certain program. …

The possibilities provided by social networks enable vast and immediate contact. People tend to spend lot of time on the social networks like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter peeping into their friend‟s accounts and trying to stay connected with the world.
However, recently people have started closing their accounts on these famous social networks after having been irritated …

Improving Performance Of Bittorrent Network Through Incentive Mechanism, Mingzhe Li Jul 2011

Improving Performance Of Bittorrent Network Through Incentive Mechanism, Mingzhe Li

Master's Projects

Content Distribution via Internet has become increasingly popular right now. Compared with centralized file distribution system using FTP and HTTP protocols, P2P (Peer to Peer) is more cost-effective. Furthermore, it could help save on bandwidth costs and to handle pick demands. Among many P2P protocols, BitTorrent is one of the most popular protocols right now. The BitTorrent network uses tit-for-tat as a method of seeking Pareto efficiency. However, seeders who contribute more to BitTorrent network than leechers are not incentivized to stay online and upload to others. This paper discusses an incentive mechanism which rewards seeder, who stays in a …

An Information Technology (It) Based Approach For Enhancing Prompt And Effective Post-Disaster Reconstruction, Faisal Manzoor Arain

Business Review

Information technology (IT) has become strongly established as a supporting tool for many professional tasks in recent years. One application of IT, namely the knowledge management system, has attracted significant attention requiring further exploration as it has the potential to enhance processes, based on the expertise of the decision-makers. A knowledge management system can undertake intelligent tasks in a specific domain that is normally performed by highly skilled people. Typically, the success of such a system relies on the ability to represent the knowledge for a particular subject. Post-disaster reconstruction and rehabilitation is a complex issue with several dimensions. Government, …

Formalizing Reusable Aspect-Oriented Concurrency Control, Neelam Soundarajan, Derek Bronish, Raffi Khatchadourian Jul 2011

Formalizing Reusable Aspect-Oriented Concurrency Control, Neelam Soundarajan, Derek Bronish, Raffi Khatchadourian

Publications and Research

Java and its library provide powerful concurrency control mechanisms. However, their use can lead to similar synchronization code scattered across multiple classes, synchronization and functional code being tangled together, and similar code being duplicated in many applications. Aspect-oriented (AO) programming makes it possible to address these problems. However, the specific behavior of systems built using AO techniques can be challenging to comprehend. We propose a specification approach to precisely express such systems' critical concurrency and synchronization properties. We illustrate the method with a simple example.

Traffic Analysis Attacks On Skype Voip Calls, Ye Zhu, Huirong Fu Jul 2011

Traffic Analysis Attacks On Skype Voip Calls, Ye Zhu, Huirong Fu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Skype is one of the most popular voice-over-IP (VoIP) service providers. One of the main reasons for the popularity of Skype VoIP services is its unique set of features to protect privacy of VoIP calls such as strong encryption, proprietary protocols, unknown codecs, dynamic path selection, and the constant packet rate. In this paper, we propose a class of passive traffic analysis attacks to compromise privacy of Skype VoIP calls. The proposed attacks are based on application-level features extracted from VoIP call traces. The proposed attacks are evaluated by extensive experiments over different types of networks including …

Relevant Knowledge Helps In Choosing Right Teacher: Active Query Selection For Ranking Adaptation, Peng Cai, Wei Gao, Kam-Fai Wong, Aoying Zhou Jul 2011

Relevant Knowledge Helps In Choosing Right Teacher: Active Query Selection For Ranking Adaptation, Peng Cai, Wei Gao, Kam-Fai Wong, Aoying Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Learning to adapt in a new setting is a common challenge to our knowledge and capability. New life would be easier if we actively pursued supervision from the right mentor chosen with our relevant but limited prior knowledge. This variant principle of active learning seems intuitively useful to many domain adaptation problems. In this paper, we substantiate its power for advancing automatic ranking adaptation, which is important in web search since it's prohibitive to gather enough labeled data for every search domain for fully training domain-specific rankers. For the cost-effectiveness, it is expected that only those most informative instances in …

Cryptanalysis Of Hsiang-Shih's Authentication Scheme For Multi-Server Architecture, Kuo-Hui Yeh, Nai-Wei Lo, Yingjiu Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

From user point of view, password-based remote user authentication technique is one of the most convenient and easy-to-use mechanisms to provide necessary security on system access. As the number of computer crimes in modern cyberspace has increased dramatically, the robustness of password-based authentication schemes has been investigated by industries and organizations in recent years. In this paper, a well-designed password-based authentication protocol for multi-server communication environment, introduced by Hsiang and Shih, is evaluated. Our security analysis indicates that their scheme is insecure against session key disclosure, server spoofing attack, and replay attack and behavior denial.

Heuristic Algorithms For Balanced Multi-Way Number Partitioning, Jilian Zhang, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Hwee Hwa Pang Jul 2011

Heuristic Algorithms For Balanced Multi-Way Number Partitioning, Jilian Zhang, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Hwee Hwa Pang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Balanced multi-way number partitioning (BMNP) seeks to split a collection of numbers into subsets with (roughly) the same cardinality and subset sum. The problem is NP-hard, and there are several exact and approximate algorithms for it. However, existing exact algorithms solve only the simpler, balanced two-way number partitioning variant, whereas the most effective approximate algorithm, BLDM, may produce widely varying subset sums. In this paper, we introduce the LRM algorithm that lowers the expected spread in subset sums to one third that of BLDM for uniformly distributed numbers and odd subset cardinalities. We also propose Meld, a novel strategy for …

Trust Network Inference For Online Rating Data Using Generative Models, Freddy Tat Chua Chua, Ee Peng Lim Jul 2011

Trust Network Inference For Online Rating Data Using Generative Models, Freddy Tat Chua Chua, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In an online rating system, raters assign ratings to objects contributed by other users. In addition, raters can develop trust and distrust on object contributors depending on a few rating and trust related factors. Previous study has shown that ratings and trust links can influence each other but there has been a lack of a formal model to relate these factors together. In this paper, we therefore propose Trust Antecedent Factor (TAF)Model, a novel probabilistic model that generate ratings based on a number of rater’s and contributor’s factors. We demonstrate that parameters of the model can be learnt by Collapsed …

A Hybrid Agent Architecture Integrating Desire, Intention And Reinforcement Learning, Ah-Hwee Tan, Yew-Soon Ong, Akejariyawong Tapanuj Jul 2011

A Hybrid Agent Architecture Integrating Desire, Intention And Reinforcement Learning, Ah-Hwee Tan, Yew-Soon Ong, Akejariyawong Tapanuj

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a hybrid agent architecture that integrates the behaviours of BDI agents, specifically desire and intention, with a neural network based reinforcement learner known as Temporal DifferenceFusion Architecture for Learning and COgNition (TD-FALCON). With the explicit maintenance of goals, the agent performs reinforcement learning with the awareness of its objectives instead of relying on external reinforcement signals. More importantly, the intention module equips the hybrid architecture with deliberative planning capabilities, enabling the agent to purposefully maintain an agenda of actions to perform and reducing the need of constantly sensing the environment. Through reinforcement learning, plans can also be …

An Investigation Of Microenterprise Capability-Building Via Access And Use Of Technology, Travis Godwin Good Jul 2011

An Investigation Of Microenterprise Capability-Building Via Access And Use Of Technology, Travis Godwin Good

Student Work

Micro-enterprises (businesses with one to five employees) lie at the heart of the American economy but are not well-researched. It is believed that technology adoption has the potential to spark strong growth among micro-enterprises, but current technology adoption models are tailored for large businesses and do not consider the human, social, and economic inputs peculiar to micro-enterprises. This research investigates how access to, and use of technology may lead micro enterprises to build capabilities that will help them increase their net income and hire more employees. Framed as a specification of Amartya Sen’s capability perspective, this research seeks, through a …

Real-World Parameter Tuning Using Factorial Design With Parameter Decomposition, Aldy Gunawan, Hoong Chuin Lau, Elaine Wong Jul 2011

Real-World Parameter Tuning Using Factorial Design With Parameter Decomposition, Aldy Gunawan, Hoong Chuin Lau, Elaine Wong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we explore the idea of improving the efficiency of factorial design for parameter tuning of metaheuristics. In a standard full factorial design, the number of runs increases exponentially as the number of parameters. To reduce the parameter search space, one option is to first partition parameters into disjoint categories. While this may be done manually based on user guidance, an automated approach proposed in this paper is to apply a fractional factorial design to partition parameters based on their main effects where each partition is then tuned independently. With a careful choice of fractional design, our approach …

The Effects Of Eye Gaze Based Control On Operator Performance In Monitoring Multiple Displays, Allison Popola Jul 2011

The Effects Of Eye Gaze Based Control On Operator Performance In Monitoring Multiple Displays, Allison Popola

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

This study investigated the utility and efficacy of using eye tracking technology as a method for selecting control of a camera within a multiple display configuration. A task analysis with a Keystroke-Level-Model (KLM) was conducted to acquire an estimated time for switching between cameras. KLM estimates suggest that response times are faster using an eye tracker than manual control -indicating a time savings. To confirm these estimates, and test other hypotheses a 2 × 2 within-subjects factorial design was used to examine the effects of Control (Using an eye tracker, or manual) under different Task Loads (Low, High). Dependent variables …

Learning Author’S Writing Pattern System By Automata, Qun Yu Jul 2011

Learning Author’S Writing Pattern System By Automata, Qun Yu

Master's Projects

The purpose of the report is to document our project’s theory, implementation and test results. The project works on an automata-based learning system which models authors’ writing characters with automatons. Since there were pervious works done by Dr. T.Y. Lin and Ms. S.X. Zhang, we continue on ALERGIA algorithm analysis and initial common pattern study in this project. Although every author has his/her own writing style, such as sentence length and word frequency etc, there are always some similarities in writing style. We hypothesize that common strings fogged the expected test result, just like the noise in radio wave. This …

Algorithms Analysis System: Recurrences, Anchit Sharma Jul 2011

Algorithms Analysis System: Recurrences, Anchit Sharma

Master's Projects

Algorithms which are recursive have running times which can be described by

recurrence equations or recurrences. These equations determine the overall running time complexity of the algorithm. This project intends to create a mechanism for

  • auto generating recurrence equations of the form T(n) = a(T(n)/b) + f(n)

  • creating a computational method for solving them and generating running times

    i.e. O (f(n)) or Ω (f(n)).

  • presenting students with a way to verify their manually computed answers with

the solution generation by the project

  • generating grading and feedback for their solution

The exercises will utilize the ‘Substitution Method’ and the ‘Master Method’ …

Rest On Routers? Preliminary Lessons For Language Designers, Framework Architects, And App Developers, Joseph P. Kaylor, Konstantin Läufer, George K. Thiruvathukal

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this position paper, we provide a preliminary assessment of hardware and software solution stack choices available to developers of resource-oriented web services on commodity embedded devices. As part of an ongoing interdisciplinary research project on air and water quality in a major urban ecosystem, we are developing an information infrastructure amounting to a role-based hierarchy of individually addressable, interconnected resources, ranging from sensors, analyzers, and other monitoring devices to aggregators and publishers. This infrastructure follows the Representational State Transfer (REST) architectural pattern and integrates non-networked or non-RESTful monitoring devices through RESTful proxy resources running on low-cost, low-energy, possibly wireless, …

Generating Aspect-Oriented Multi-Document Summarization With Event-Aspect Model, Peng Li, Yinglin Wang, Wei Gao, Jing Jiang Jul 2011

Generating Aspect-Oriented Multi-Document Summarization With Event-Aspect Model, Peng Li, Yinglin Wang, Wei Gao, Jing Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose a novel approach to automatic generation of aspect-oriented summaries from multiple documents. We first develop an event-aspect LDA model to cluster sentences into aspects. We then use extended LexRank algorithm to rank the sentences in each cluster. We use Integer Linear Programming for sentence selection. Key features of our method include automatic grouping of semantically related sentences and sentence ranking based on extension of random walk model. Also, we implement a new sentence compression algorithm which use dependency tree instead of parser tree. We compare our method with four baseline methods. Quantitative evaluation based on …
