Citizen Sensing: Opportunities And Challenges In Mining Social Signals And Perceptions, Amit P. Sheth Jul 2011

Citizen Sensing: Opportunities And Challenges In Mining Social Signals And Perceptions, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Millions of persons have become 'citizens' of an Internet- or Web-enabled social community. Web 2.0 fostered the open environment and applications for tagging, blogging, wikis, and social networking sites that have made information consumption, production, and sharing so incredibly easy. An interconnected network of people who actively observe, report, collect, analyze, and disseminate information via text, audio, or video messages, increasingly through pervasively connected mobile devices, has led to what we term citizen sensing. In this talk, we review recent progress in supporting collective intelligence through intelligent processing of citizen sensing. Key issues we cover in this talk are: - …

Managing Multiple Media Streams In Html5: The Ieee 1599-2008 Case Study, S. Baldan, L. A. Ludovico, Davide Andrea Mauro Jul 2011

Managing Multiple Media Streams In Html5: The Ieee 1599-2008 Case Study, S. Baldan, L. A. Ludovico, Davide Andrea Mauro

Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research

This paper deals with the problem of managing multiple multimedia streams in a Web environment. Multimedia types to support are pure audio, video with no sound, and audio/video. Data streams refer to the same event or performance, consequently they both have and should maintain mutual synchronization. Besides, a Web player should be able to play different multimedia streams simultaneously, as well as to switch from one to another in real time. The clarifying example of a music piece encoded in IEEE 1599 format will be presented as a case study.

Scuta: A Server-Side Access Control System For Web Applications, Xi Tan, Wenliang Du, Tongbo Luo, Karthick Jayaraman

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

The Web is playing a very important role in our lives, and is becoming an essential element of the computing infrastructure. Unfortunately, its importance makes it the preferred target of attacks. Web-based vulnerabilities now outnumber traditional computer security concerns. A recent study shows that over 80 percent of web sites have had at least one serious vulnerability. We believe that the Web’s problems, to a large degree, are caused by the inadequacy of its underlying access control systems. To reduce the number of vulnerabilities, it is essential to provide web applications with better access control models that can adequately address …

Naive Bayesian Spam Filters For Log File Analysis, Russel William Havens Jul 2011

Naive Bayesian Spam Filters For Log File Analysis, Russel William Havens

Theses and Dissertations

As computer system usage grows in our world, system administrators need better visibility into the workings of computer systems, especially when those systems have problems or go down. Most system components, from hardware, through OS, to application server and application, write log files of some sort, be it system-standardized logs such syslog or application specific logs. These logs very often contain valuable clues to the nature of system problems and outages, but their verbosity can make them difficult to utilize. Statistical data mining methods could help in filtering and classifying log entries, but these tools are often out of the …

Comparison Of Clustered Rdf Data Stores, Venkata Patchigolla Jul 2011

Comparison Of Clustered Rdf Data Stores, Venkata Patchigolla

Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses

Storing data in RDF format helps in simpler data interchange among different researchers compared to present approaches. There has been tremendous increase in the applications that use RDF data. The nature of RDF data is such that it tends to increase explosively. This makes it necessary to consider the time for retrieval and scalability of data while selecting a suitable RDF data store for developing applications. The research concentrates on comparing BigOWLIM. Bigdata, 4store and Virtuoso RDF stores on basis of their scalability and performance of storing and retrieving cancer proteomics and mass spectrometry data using SPARQL queries. In this …

Scalable Object-Class Search Via Sparse Retrieval Models And Approximate Ranking, Mohammad Rastegari, Chen Fang, Lorenzo Torresani Jul 2011

Scalable Object-Class Search Via Sparse Retrieval Models And Approximate Ranking, Mohammad Rastegari, Chen Fang, Lorenzo Torresani

Computer Science Technical Reports

In this paper we address the problem of object-class retrieval in large image data sets: given a small set of training examples defining a visual category, the objective is to efficiently retrieve images of the same class from a large database. We propose two contrasting retrieval schemes achieving good accuracy and high efficiency. The first exploits sparse classification models expressed as linear combinations of a small number of features. These sparse models can be efficiently evaluated using inverted file indexing. Furthermore, we introduce a novel ranking procedure that provides a significant speedup over inverted file indexing when the goal is …

Centinela: A Human Activity Recognition System Based On Acceleration And Vital Sign Data, Óscar D. Lara, Alfredo J. Perez, Miguel A. Labrador, José D. Posada Jul 2011

Centinela: A Human Activity Recognition System Based On Acceleration And Vital Sign Data, Óscar D. Lara, Alfredo J. Perez, Miguel A. Labrador, José D. Posada

Computer Science Faculty Publications

This paper presents Centinela, a system that combines acceleration data with vital signs to achieve highly accurate activity recognition. Centinela recognizes five activities: walking, running, sitting, ascending, and descending. The system includes a portable and unobtrusive real-time data collection platform, which only requires a single sensing device and a mobile phone. To extract features, both statistical and structural detectors are applied, and two new features are proposed to discriminate among activities during periods of vital sign stabilization. After evaluating eight different classifiers and three different time window sizes, our results show that Centinela achieves up to 95.7% overall accuracy, which …

Symmetric Conditions For A Weighted Fourier Transform Inequality, Ryan Berndt Jul 2011

Symmetric Conditions For A Weighted Fourier Transform Inequality, Ryan Berndt

Mathematics Faculty Scholarship

We discuss conditions on weight functions, necessary or sufficient, so that the Fourier transform is bounded from one weighted Lebesgue space to another. The sufficient condition and the primary necessary condition presented are similar, one being phrased is terms of arbitrary measurable sets and the other in terms of cubes. We believe that the symmetry amongst the two conditions helps frame how a single condition, necessary and sufficient, might appear.

Improving The Accuracy Of The Generalized Fdtd-Q Scheme For Solving The Linear Time-Dependent Schrödinger Equation, James John Elliot Iii Jul 2011

Improving The Accuracy Of The Generalized Fdtd-Q Scheme For Solving The Linear Time-Dependent Schrödinger Equation, James John Elliot Iii

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation improves the accuracy of the Generalized Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) scheme by determining a differential operator that is capable of achieving reasonable accuracy when used to obtain even-order derivatives up to order fourteen. The Generalized FDTD scheme is an explicit, scheme used to solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, and being an explicit scheme, it must utilize a carefully devised ratio of the temporal step to the spatial step to maintain numerical stability. This ratio is called the mesh ratio, and the Generalized FDTD scheme allows this ratio to be significantly relaxed. As the mesh ratio increases, the …

Local Closed World Semantics: Keep It Simple, Stupid!, Adila Krishnadhi, Kunal Sengupta, Pascal Hitzler Jul 2011

Local Closed World Semantics: Keep It Simple, Stupid!, Adila Krishnadhi, Kunal Sengupta, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

A combination of open and closed-world reasoning (usually called local closed world reasoning) is a desirable capability of knowledge representation formalisms for Semantic Web applications. However, none of the proposals made to date for extending description logics with local closed world capabilities has had any significant impact on applications. We believe that one of the key reasons for this is that current proposals fail to provide approaches which are intuitively accessible for application developers at the same time are applicable, as extensions, to expressive description logics as SROIQ, which underlies the Web Ontology Language OWL.

In this paper, we propose …

Syntax Proposal For Nominal Schemas, David Carral Martinez, Adila A. Krisnadhi, Pascal Hitzler Jul 2011

Syntax Proposal For Nominal Schemas, David Carral Martinez, Adila A. Krisnadhi, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper proposes a syntax representation for nominal schemas, a new description-logic style ex- tension of OWL 2 [2, 3]. Necessary and minimal modifications to Functional and Manchester grammars are included as well as mappings from these two syntaxes to Turtle. An appendix with two examples is added in order to clarify the proposal.

Comparative Analysis Of Peak-Detection Techniques For Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Chromatography, Indu Latha, Stephen E. Reichenbach, Qingping Tao Jul 2011

Comparative Analysis Of Peak-Detection Techniques For Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Chromatography, Indu Latha, Stephen E. Reichenbach, Qingping Tao

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) is a powerful technology for separating complex samples. The typical goal of GC×GC peak detection is to aggregate data points of analyte peaks based on their retention times and intensities. Two techniques commonly used for two-dimensional peak detection are the two-step algorithm and the watershed algorithm. A recent study [4] compared the performance of the two-step and watershed algorithms for GC×GC data with retention-time shifts in the second-column separations. In that analysis, the peak retention-time shifts were corrected while applying the two-step algorithm but the watershed algorithm was applied without shift correction. The results indicated that the …

A Study On Facility Planning Using Discrete Event Simulation: Case Study Of A Grain Delivery Terminal, Sarah M. Asio Jul 2011

A Study On Facility Planning Using Discrete Event Simulation: Case Study Of A Grain Delivery Terminal, Sarah M. Asio

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The application of traditional approaches to the design of efficient facilities can be tedious and time consuming when uncertainty and a number of constraints exist. Queuing models and mathematical programming techniques are not able to capture the complex interaction between resources, the environment and space constraints for dynamic stochastic processes. In the following study discrete event simulation is applied to the facility planning process for a grain delivery terminal. The discrete event simulation approach has been applied to studies such as capacity planning and facility layout for a gasoline station and evaluating the resource requirements for a manufacturing facility. To …

Web Wisdom: An Essay On How Web 2.0 And Semantic Web Can Foster A Global Knowledge Society, Christopher Thomas, Amit P. Sheth Jul 2011

Web Wisdom: An Essay On How Web 2.0 And Semantic Web Can Foster A Global Knowledge Society, Christopher Thomas, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Admittedly this is a presumptuous title that should never be used when reporting on individual research advances. Wisdom is just not a scientific concept. In this case, though, we are reporting on recent developments on the web that lead us to believe that the web is on the way to providing a platform for not only information acquisition and business transactions but also for large scale knowledge development and decision support. It is likely that by now every web user has participated in some sort of social function or knowledge accumulating function on the web, many times without even being …

Finding Robust-Under-Risk Solutions For Flowshop Scheduling, Steven O. Kimbrough, Ann Kuo, Hoong Chuin Lau Jul 2011

Finding Robust-Under-Risk Solutions For Flowshop Scheduling, Steven O. Kimbrough, Ann Kuo, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose and explore, in the context of benchmark problems for flowshop scheduling, a risk-based concept of robustness for optimization problems. This risk-based concept is in distinction to, and complements, the uncertainty-based concept employed in the field known as robust optimization. Implementation of our concept requires problem solution methods that sample the solution space intelligently and that produce large numbers of distinct sample points. With these solutions to hand, their robustness scores are easily obtained and heuristically robust solutions found. We find evolutionary computation to be effective for this purpose on these problems.

Automatic High-Fidelity 3d Road Network Modeling, Jie Wang Jul 2011

Automatic High-Fidelity 3d Road Network Modeling, Jie Wang

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Many computer applications such as racing games and driving simulations frequently make use of 3D high-fidelity road network models for a variety of purposes. However, there are very few existing methods for automatic generation of 3D realistic road networks, especially for those in the real world. On the other hand, vast road network GIS data have been collected in the past and used by a wide range of applications, such as navigation and evaluation. A method that can automatically produce 3D high-fidelity road network models from 2D real road GIS data will significantly reduce both the labor and time needed …

The Effect Of An Offshore Wind Turbine Array On Circulation In An Idealized Coastal Ocean, Mahmoud Kamel Jul 2011

The Effect Of An Offshore Wind Turbine Array On Circulation In An Idealized Coastal Ocean, Mahmoud Kamel

OES Theses and Dissertations

The effect of arrays of wind turbines on circulation in the coastal ocean is analyzed with a coastal numerical model applied to a shallow coastal area like the Mid Atlantic Bight (MAB). A simplified model domain is specified with a linearly deepening shelf along a straight coastline. The initial density structure is a quasi-two layer situation with a sharp thermocline. Wind stress in most of the cases is either upwelling or downwelling favorable with constant amplitude continuing after a smooth start. There are two cases where oscillating wind forcing is used. Simulations consider wind arrays having different widths, different locations …

Automatic Content Generation For Video Self Modeling, Ju Shen, Anusha Raghunathan, Sen-Ching S. Cheung, Ravi R. Patel Jul 2011

Automatic Content Generation For Video Self Modeling, Ju Shen, Anusha Raghunathan, Sen-Ching S. Cheung, Ravi R. Patel

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Video self modeling (VSM) is a behavioral intervention technique in which a learner models a target behavior by watching a video of him or herself. Its effectiveness in rehabilitation and education has been repeatedly demonstrated but technical challenges remain in creating video contents that depict previously unseen behaviors. In this paper, we propose a novel system that re-renders new talking-head sequences suitable to be used for VSM treatment of patients with voice disorder. After the raw footage is captured, a new speech track is either synthesized using text-to-speech or selected based on voice similarity from a database of clean speeches. …

A Reservation-Based Smart Parking System, Hongwei Wang Jul 2011

A Reservation-Based Smart Parking System, Hongwei Wang

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In metropolitan areas, parking management influences drivers search time and cost for parking spaces, parking revenue, and traffic congestion. The wide deployment of wireless parking meters with sensing and communications capabilities allows the parking authority to monitor the state of each parking space in real time and optimize the parking management.

In this thesis, we study state-of-the-art parking policies in smart parking systems, and show that the smart parking system needs to be "smarter". Our design goals of the smart parking systems include: (1) simplify the operations of parking systems, (2) improve drivers' satisfaction, (3) increase parking revenue, and (4) …
