Erp Implementation: An Investigation Into Social Capital And Knowledge Extraction In The Public Sector., Corey E. Jensen

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The elements of a successful Enterprise Resource Planning implementation strategy have been widely researched in the information technology field. Many have sought to compile a complete list of attributes that, if utilized, would guarantee a successful ERP implementation while also adhering to relative time and budget constraints. While several critical success factors have been identified and further enabled higher success rates in evolving ERP implementation strategy, there appears to be room for additional improvement. Extracting essential corporate knowledge from existing information systems in effort to implement an ERP solution is often one of the most challenging tasks of the implementation …

A Phishing Model And Its Applications To Evaluating Phishing Attacks, Narasimha Shashidhar, Lei Chen Aug 2011

A Phishing Model And Its Applications To Evaluating Phishing Attacks, Narasimha Shashidhar, Lei Chen

International Cyber Resilience conference

Phishing is a growing threat to Internet users and causes billions of dollars in damage every year. In this paper, we present a theoretical yet practical model to study this threat in a formal manner. While it is folklore knowledge that a successful phishing attack entails creating messages that are indistinguishable from the natural, expected messages by the intended victim, this concept has not been formalized. Our model captures phishing in terms of this indistinguishability between the natural and phishing message distributions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that places phishing on a concrete theoretical …

Polysat’S Next Generation Avionics Design, Greg Manyak, John M. Bellardo

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The CubeSat platform provides a unique challenge for flight software design due to the incredible size and power constraints. A number of tradeoffs must be made to balance effectiveness, fault tolerance, and cost. These basic requirements have been combined with the lessons learned from Cal Poly’s past 8-bit avionics system to design a significant revision based around a 32-bit microprocessor running Linux. This work analyzes both generations of avionics design, including a discussion of major design principles that are relevant to other CubeSat missions.

Gap Analysis Of Intrusion Detection In Smart Grids, Nishchal Kush, Ernest Foo, Ejaz Ahmed, Irfan Ahmed, Andrew Clark

International Cyber Resilience conference

Given the recent emergence of the smart grid and smart grid related technologies, their security is a prime concern. Intrusion detection provides a second line of defence. However, conventional intrusion detection systems (IDSs) are unable to adequately address the unique requirements of the smart grid. This paper presents a gap analysis of contemporary IDSs from a smart grid perspective. This paper highlights the lack of adequate intrusion detection within the smart grid and discusses the limitations of current IDSs approaches. The gap analysis identifies current IDSs as being unsuited to smart grid application without significant changes to address smart grid …

A Threat To Cyber Resilience: A Malware Rebirthing Botnet, Murray Brand, Craig Valli, Andrew Woodward Aug 2011

A Threat To Cyber Resilience: A Malware Rebirthing Botnet, Murray Brand, Craig Valli, Andrew Woodward

International Cyber Resilience conference

This paper presents a threat to cyber resilience in the form of a conceptual model of a malware rebirthing botnet which can be used in a variety of scenarios. It can be used to collect existing malware and rebirth it with new functionality and signatures that will avoid detection by AV software and hinder analysis. The botnet can then use the customized malware to target an organization with an orchestrated attack from the member machines in the botnet for a variety of malicious purposes, including information warfare applications. Alternatively, it can also be used to inject known malware signatures into …

Why Australia's E-Health System Will Be A Vulnerable National Asset , Patricia A. Williams Aug 2011

Why Australia's E-Health System Will Be A Vulnerable National Asset , Patricia A. Williams

International Cyber Resilience conference

Connecting Australian health services and the e-health initiative is a major talking point currently. Many issues are presented as key to its success including solving issues with confidentiality and privacy. However the largest problem may not be these issues in sharing information but the fact that the point of origin and storage of such records is still relatively insecure. Australia aims to have a Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record in 2012 and this is underpinned by a national network for e-health. It is this very foundation that becomes the critical infrastructure, with general practice the cornerstone for its success. Yet, …

Securing The Elderly: A Developmental Approach To Hypermedia Based Online Information Security For Senior Novice Computer Users, David M. Cook, Patryk Szewczyk, Krishnun Sansurooah Aug 2011

Securing The Elderly: A Developmental Approach To Hypermedia Based Online Information Security For Senior Novice Computer Users, David M. Cook, Patryk Szewczyk, Krishnun Sansurooah

International Cyber Resilience conference

Whilst security threats to the general public continue to evolve, elderly computer users with limited skill and knowledge are left playing catch-up in an ever-widening gap in fundamental cyber-related comprehension. As a definable cohort, the elderly generally lack awareness of current security threats, and remain under-educated in terms of applying appropriate controls and safeguards to their computers and networking devices. This paper identifies that web-based computer security information sources do not adequately provide helpful information to senior citizen end-users in terms of both design and content. It subsequently demonstrates a solution designed with the elderly, yet novice, end-user in mind. …

On The Detection Of Hidden Terrorist Cells Immersed In Peer To Peer Networks, Belinda A. Chiera Aug 2011

On The Detection Of Hidden Terrorist Cells Immersed In Peer To Peer Networks, Belinda A. Chiera

International Cyber Resilience conference

Hidden terrorist cells in high dimensional communications networks arise when terrorists camouflage connectivity to appear randomly connected to the background network. We investigate hidden network detectability when the background network does not support terrorist activities. Using two September 11 terrorist networks as the test bed and a network measure called assortativity, we suggest hidden terrorist networks can behave as Peer-to-Peer networks. We compare the September 11 hidden networks with Peer-to-Peer networks containing embedded terrorist networks, as well as with generic Peer-to-Peer networks. Using Peer-to-Peer characteristics and social network group-based centralities, we show that for certain Peer-to-Peer networks it is possible …

K Anonymous Private Query Based On Blind Signature And Oblivious Transfer, Russell Paulet, Golam Kaosar, Xun Yi Aug 2011

K Anonymous Private Query Based On Blind Signature And Oblivious Transfer, Russell Paulet, Golam Kaosar, Xun Yi

International Cyber Resilience conference

In this paper, we consider a scenario where there are a group of clients and a database server, and a client wishes to query the database, but does not want to reveal her or his query to the server. Current solutions for this problem are based on oblivious transfer, which usually requires high communication overhead. To reduce the communication overhead, we propose three k-anonymous private query protocols. Our first protocol is based on blind signature, where the server cannot determine the identity of the querying client from the group. Our second protocol is based on k-anonymous oblivious transfer, where the …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Security Of Internet Banking In Australia:A Customer Perspective, Panida Subsorn, Sunsern Limwiriyakul Aug 2011

A Comparative Analysis Of The Security Of Internet Banking In Australia:A Customer Perspective, Panida Subsorn, Sunsern Limwiriyakul

International Cyber Resilience conference

Internet has its own inherent security issues in terms of confidentiality, integrity and privacy. The main impact of these kinds of issues is specifically on the banking industry as they have increased their Internet banking facilities in order to reduce costs and provide better services and banking convenience to their Internet banking customers. However, banking customers have not had a choice of Internet banking mainly due to the fact that they are already tied to whatever form of Internet banking that their current bank provides. This paper therefore examined Internet banking security systems in Australian banks by creating the proposed …

Novel Pseudo Random Number Generation Using Variant Logic Framework, Jeffrey Zheng Aug 2011

Novel Pseudo Random Number Generation Using Variant Logic Framework, Jeffrey Zheng

International Cyber Resilience conference

Cyber Security requires cryptology for the basic protection. Among different ECRYPT technologies, stream cipher plays a central role in advanced network security applications; in addition, pseudo-random number generators are placed in the core position of the mechanism. In this paper, a novel method of pseudo-random number generation is proposed to take advantage of the large functional space described using variant logic, a new framework for binary logic. Using permutation and complementary operations on classical truth table to form relevant variant table, numbers can be selected from table entries having pseudo-random properties. A simple generation mechanism is described and shown and …

Rock Porosity Analysis Using High Resolution X-Ray Tomography, Leo Groner, Dula Parkinson, Katya Bazilevskaya Aug 2011

Rock Porosity Analysis Using High Resolution X-Ray Tomography, Leo Groner, Dula Parkinson, Katya Bazilevskaya

STAR Program Research Presentations

Understanding rock porosity, the fraction of rock volume that is in pores, is a key to modeling weathering and flow of water, petroleum and CO2 through geological structures. Weathering of rocks affects the CO2 cycle, nutrient cycle and soil formation. Rock porosity affects water flow rates and, in turn, affects weathering. Avizo software was used to explore, visualize and measure the reconstructed high-resolution X-ray micro-tomography data collected from scanned rocks. Many Avizo approaches were tried before arriving at an acceptable process to determine their porosity characteristics. Porosity dynamics are affected by weathering and lithification. At micron resolution, the image is …

The Role Of Entrepreneurship, Innovation, And Intuition, Jens Pohl Aug 2011

The Role Of Entrepreneurship, Innovation, And Intuition, Jens Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

In recognizing the importance of entrepreneurship and innovation as the principal drivers of economic growth, this paper focuses on the human attributes that govern the behavior of the entrepreneur and the societal perceptions that influence the human environment in which the entrepreneur operates. Foremost among these human attributes is the experience-based nature of the human cognitive system that prepares us well for dealing with events that are closely related to our past experience, but forces us to learn by failure as we apply past methods to new situations. In particular, the paper discusses the difficulties that the human dependence on …

Semantic Transformation Of Search Requests For Improving The Results Of Web Search, Vladimir A. Fomichov, Anton V. Kirillov Aug 2011

Semantic Transformation Of Search Requests For Improving The Results Of Web Search, Vladimir A. Fomichov, Anton V. Kirillov

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The paper describes a new method of constructing semantic expansions of search requests for improving the results of Web search. This method is based on the theory of K-representations -a new theory of designing semantic-syntactic analyzers of natural language texts with the broad use of formal means for representing input, intermediary, and output data. The current version of the theory is set forth in a monograph published by Springer in 2010. The stated approach is implemented with the help of the Web programming language Java: an experimental search system AOS (Aspect Oriented Search) has been developed.

Technology Assessment: Applied Infocyber Scenarios, John F. Halldane Aug 2011

Technology Assessment: Applied Infocyber Scenarios, John F. Halldane

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

CADRC and KML present an urgent need for analyzing the enormous volume of digital data in people centered applications. Adaptive knowledge-based collaborative agents were suggested. Amatrix for collaborative control, monitoring and management was outlined (Halldane Aug 2006) based on inline and crossline management principles. This introduced channels describing the technology and context, nodes of common parameters or attributes to link with other channels through secure analytical gates, then parallel tracks of meaningful criteria from performance, specifications, monitoring, to priorities. This is now applied in analytical scenarios to compare channels and tracks for assessing technology against meaningful infocyber tracks (Figure 1). …

An Intelligent Supply Chain Planning And Execution Environment, Jens Pohl Aug 2011

An Intelligent Supply Chain Planning And Execution Environment, Jens Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

Logistic planning and execution processes in a supply-chain are subject to a high level of complexity because of the number of parties and issues involved, the number of relationships that exist among them, and the dynamic nature of the execution environment. The large volume of data flowing through a sizable computer-based logistic planning and execution management environment that is based on rote data-processing principles tends to overwhelm the human users. As a result many opportunities for improving the efficiency of supply-chain processes and thereby reducing costs are overlooked by the human users, who are forced into a reactive mode. Similar …

Extracting Forensic Artifacts From Windows O/S Memory, James S. Okolica, Gilbert L. Peterson Aug 2011

Extracting Forensic Artifacts From Windows O/S Memory, James S. Okolica, Gilbert L. Peterson

AFIT Documents

Memory analysis is a rapidly growing area in both digital forensics and cyber situational awareness (SA). Memory provides the most accurate snapshot of what is occurring on a computer at a moment in time. By combining it with event and network logs as well as the files present on the filesystem, an analyst can re-create much of what has occurred and is occuring on a computer. The Compiled Memory Analysis Tool (CMAT) takes either a disk image of memory from a Windows operating system or an interface into a virtual machine running a Windows operating system and extracts forensic artifacts …

Quantitative Characterization Of Microstructure Features For 1st Generation Advanced High Strength Steels, Margarita Vidrio, Ellen Liu, Donsheng Li, Kyoo Sil Choi, Xin Sun Aug 2011

Quantitative Characterization Of Microstructure Features For 1st Generation Advanced High Strength Steels, Margarita Vidrio, Ellen Liu, Donsheng Li, Kyoo Sil Choi, Xin Sun

STAR Program Research Presentations

The role of Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) in the automotive industry is important because of its affordability and excellent mechanical properties. The 1st generation of AHSS achieves its preferred combination of strength and ductility by embedding harder martensite grains into softer ferritic matrix. Ductility and strength of these steels are important to safety, formability, application, and life. However, a noticeable degree of inconsistent forming behaviors has been observed in the 1st generation AHSS in production, which seems to be related to the microstructure-level inhomogeneity. The objective of this project is to grain fundamental understandings on how different microstructure level …

An Agent Facilitated Design Conversation System For Facilitating The Designer In Creative Thinking In Architectural Design, Geeta Arjun, Jim Plume Aug 2011

An Agent Facilitated Design Conversation System For Facilitating The Designer In Creative Thinking In Architectural Design, Geeta Arjun, Jim Plume

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The paper discusses a current research that investigates if a computer aided conversation system can be created to support the human thought process in the early stages of architectural design. It argues that design conversations are an essential premise for designing, especially at the early stages, when the designer has to brainstorm ideas to generate creative conceptual solution-conjectures. The paper also argues that design knowledge is mainly dependent on a designer’s experiences. But experiential knowledge, stored in the long term memory is difficult to recall. Based on these arguments, an agent-based knowledge system, Design Thinker, is designed to allow for …

Measuring Robustness Of Feature Selection Techniques On Software Engineering Datasets, Huanjing Wang, Taghi Khoshgoftaar, Randall Wald Aug 2011

Measuring Robustness Of Feature Selection Techniques On Software Engineering Datasets, Huanjing Wang, Taghi Khoshgoftaar, Randall Wald

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Feature Selection is a process which identifies irrelevant and redundant features from a high-dimensional dataset (that is, a dataset with many features), and removes these before further analysis is performed. Recently, the robustness (e.g., stability) of feature selection techniques has been studied, to examine the sensitivity of these techniques to changes in their input data. In this study, we investigate the robustness of six commonly used feature selection techniques as the magnitude of change to the datasets and the size of the selected feature subsets are varied. All experiments were conducted on 16 datasets from three real-world software projects. The …

Creating A Representation Of Items And Version That Support Efficient Evaluation Of The Transaction-Time Axis In Xml-Based Databases, Kaylan Goutham Mekala

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This project was developed to create a platform for implementing the features and query support provided by the transaction time axis (tt-axis). The basis for this platform is a new numbering plan called item version timestamp level numbering (IVTLN), and it extends an existing numbering plan, namely, dewey level numbering (DLN), by including version and timestamp information. Thus, the transaction time axis provides a temporal perspective for XML nodes in addition to non-temporal axes like the ancestor and descendant axes. This project provides an efficient, extensible, and comprehensible platform for the implementation of the new numbering plan and the services …

Intractability Of Integration And Derivative For Multivariate Polynomial And Trigonometric Function, Liang Ding Aug 2011

Intractability Of Integration And Derivative For Multivariate Polynomial And Trigonometric Function, Liang Ding

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

We study the hardness of some basic linear operators which involve high dimension integration or derivative. For a multivariate polynomial (1, ⋯ , ) which has format ∏ ∑ 1, we show that there is no any factor polynomial time approximation for the integration of (1, ⋯ , ) in the unit cube [0,1] unless P = NP. In addition to polynomials, we extend the discussion to nonlinear function. For a trigonometric function (1, ⋯ , ) of format ∏ ∑ ∗ , we show that it is #P-hard to compute derivative () (1,⋯,) 1⋯ at the origin …

General Construction Of Chameleon All-But-One Trapdoor Functions, Shengli Liu, Junzuo Lai, Robert H. Deng Aug 2011

General Construction Of Chameleon All-But-One Trapdoor Functions, Shengli Liu, Junzuo Lai, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Lossy trapdoor functions enable black-box construction of public key encryption (PKE) schemes secure against chosen-ciphertext attack [18]. Recently, a more efficient black-box construction of public key encryption was given in [13] with the help of chameleon all-but-one trapdoor functions (ABO-TDFs). In this paper, we propose a black-box construction for transforming any ABO-TDFs into chameleon ABO-TDFs with the help of chameleon hash functions. Instantiating the proposed general black-box construction of chameleon ABO-TDFs, we obtain the first chameleon ABO-TDFs based on the Decisional Diffie-Hellman (DDH) assumption.

Beyond Selinux: The Case For Behavior-Based Policy And Trust Languages, Sergey Bratus, Michael E. Locasto, Boris Otto, Rebecca Shapiro, Sean W. Smith, Gabriel Weaver

Computer Science Technical Reports

Despite the availability of powerful mechanisms for security policy and access control, real-world information security practitioners---both developers and security officers---still find themselves in need of something more. We believe that this is the case because available policy languages do not provide clear and intelligible ways to allow developers to communicate their knowledge and expectations of trustworthy behaviors and actual application requirements to IT administrators. We work to address this policy engineering gap by shifting the focus of policy language design to this communication via behavior-based policies and their motivating scenarios.
