Security Systems Based On Gaussian Integers : Analysis Of Basic Operations And Time Complexity Of Secret Transformations, Aleksey Koval Aug 2011

Security Systems Based On Gaussian Integers : Analysis Of Basic Operations And Time Complexity Of Secret Transformations, Aleksey Koval

Dissertations

Many security algorithms currently in use rely heavily on integer arithmetic modulo prime numbers. Gaussian integers can be used with most security algorithms that are formulated for real integers. The aim of this work is to study the benefits of common security protocols with Gaussian integers. Although the main contribution of this work is to analyze and improve the application of Gaussian integers for various public key (PK) algorithms, Gaussian integers were studied in the context of image watermarking as well.

The significant benefits of the application of Gaussian integers become apparent when they are used with Discrete Logarithm Problem …

Content-based image search for retrieval of images based on the similarity in their visual contents, such as color, texture, and shape, to a query image is an active research area due to its broad applications. Color, for example, provides powerful information for image search and classification. This dissertation investigates advanced image search techniques and presents new color descriptors for image search and classification and robust image enhancement and segmentation methods for iris recognition.

First, several new color descriptors have been developed for color image search. Specifically, a new oRGB-SIFT descriptor, which integrates the oRGB color space and the Scale-Invariant Feature …

On Human Analyst Performance In Assisted Requirements Tracing: Statistical Analysis, A. Dekhtyar, O. Dekhtyar, J. Holden, D. Cuddeback, W. K. Kong Aug 2011

On Human Analyst Performance In Assisted Requirements Tracing: Statistical Analysis, A. Dekhtyar, O. Dekhtyar, J. Holden, D. Cuddeback, W. K. Kong

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Assisted requirements tracing is a process in which a human analyst validates candidate traces produced by an automated requirements tracing method or tool. The assisted requirements tracing process splits the difference between the commonly applied time-consuming, tedious, and error-prone manual tracing and the automated requirements tracing procedures that are a focal point of academic studies. In fact, in software assurance scenarios, assisted requirements tracing is the only way in which tracing can be at least partially automated. In this paper, we present the results of an extensive 12 month study of assisted tracing, conducted using three different tracing processes at …

A Secure File System With Scalability And Reliability Features On Distributed Storage Devices, Feng Shen

Student Theses and Dissertations

Today, data security becomes one of people's major concerns, which is normally handled by encryption schemes. Nevertheless, the associated key management becomes more complicated, especially in distributed file systems. Scalability and reliability are always major issues in the secure file systems. This thesis proposes a new system to address these concerns. Refined secret sharing scheme is deployed to avoid key management requirement and provide reliability on data processing side, whereas a load balanced server cluster infrastructure is proposed for scalability and high availability on system side. Thus scalable data processing schemes can be applied on flexible system infrastructure.

Jigdfs: The Jigsaw Secure Distributed File System And Its Applications, Jiang Bian Aug 2011

Jigdfs: The Jigsaw Secure Distributed File System And Its Applications, Jiang Bian

Theses and Dissertations

The Jigsaw Distributed File System (JigDFS) aims to securely store and retrieve files on large scale networks. While targeting many of the same goals as previous distributed file systems, the design of JigDFS is mainly driven by the privacy needs of users. Files in JigDFS are sliced into small segments using an Information Dispersal Algorithm (IDA) and distributed onto different nodes recursively to increase fault tolerance against node failures. Layered encryption is applied to each file segment with keys produced by a hashed-key chain algorithm, so that encrypted data and keys are stored separately. Recursive IDA and layered encryption enhance …

A Data-Intensive Approach To Named Entity Recognition Using Domain And Language Independent Methods, Olukayode Isaac Osesina Aug 2011

A Data-Intensive Approach To Named Entity Recognition Using Domain And Language Independent Methods, Olukayode Isaac Osesina

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I proposed a novel approach to Named Entity Recognition (NER) in which the contextual and intrinsic indicators are used for locating named entities and their semantic meanings in unstructured textual information (UTI). Named entity is the process of locating a word or a phrase that references a particular entity within a text. The data-intensive approach introduced in this dissertation departs from the traditional Natural Language Processing used in NER tasks in that it does not apply linguistic rules or knowledge in the entity recognition process. It leverages the wide availability of huge amounts of data as well …

Simulation Of Mobile Treatment Monitoring System, Emre Ermisoglu Aug 2011

Simulation Of Mobile Treatment Monitoring System, Emre Ermisoglu

Theses and Dissertations

Noncompliance is the main reason for treatment failure. Approximately 50 to 75% of patients misuse their medication due to forgetfulness and busy schedule. Instead of heavily depending on patient's memory for following medication deadlines, we propose a new automated medication helper called "Mobile Treatment Monitoring System" to help patients take their medication on time. Among other technologies that help patients to follow up their medication such as Pill Organizers, Medication Reminders, and Pill Dispensers, using remote treatment monitoring system appears to be a promising technology because system creates a direct link between doctor and patient so doctor will be notified …

Energy-Efficient And Secure Framework For Wireless Sensor Networks, Murat Al Aug 2011

Energy-Efficient And Secure Framework For Wireless Sensor Networks, Murat Al

Theses and Dissertations

Protocol designers for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have to consider many constraints including limited power and computing capacity of the sensing devices that make WSNs more vulnerable to attacks than wired or more resourceful wireless networks. The availability of a message for the adversary is the starting point for attacks on data confidentiality. This work proposes an end-to-end Message Dispersion Mechanism (MDM) to improve data confidentiality by significantly reducing message interception opportunities by potential adversaries in the first place. With MDM, a resource constrained sensor device first divides a message into several segments, encrypts them, and distributes them to a …

Object & Scene Recognition Using Color Descriptors And Adaptive Color Klt, Volkan Halil Bagci Aug 2011

Object & Scene Recognition Using Color Descriptors And Adaptive Color Klt, Volkan Halil Bagci

Theses and Dissertations

With the emergence and explosion of huge image databases there is an increasing necessity for effective methods to assess visual information on the level of objects and scene types. A wide variety of Content - Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) systems already exists. As a key issue in CBIR, similarity measure quantifies the resemblance in contents between a pair of images. Depending on the type of features, the formulation of the similarity measure varies greatly. The primary goal of our study is to build a CBIR system based on color features using Adaptive Color Karhunen Loeve Transform (ACKLT) which is efficient …

The ability to determine accurately the health of a fetus through non-invasive techniques has tremendous positive affects for the fetus, the mother, and the health care system. In this project, Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD) techniques were applied to fetal magnetocardiogram data from 118 human fetuses with a gestational age of 24 to 39 weeks. These techniques produced three models relating to the health of a fetus which are presented in this document. The first model distinguished maternal high-risk factors versus low-risk factors. The second model was used to classify neonate outcomes of sick versus healthy. The third model was …

Modeling And Simulation Of Hpc System Through Job Scheduling Analysis, William Bradley Hurst Aug 2011

Modeling And Simulation Of Hpc System Through Job Scheduling Analysis, William Bradley Hurst

Theses and Dissertations

The sophistication of the devices through which a man shapes his world are the tool-marks of his development upon history. One device currently shaping the lives of man is the High Performance Computer (HPC) system. HPC systems have been described as ``a game changing technology (King and BusinessWeek, 2010).'' The reason for HPC systems to be declared ``a game changing technology (King and BusinessWeek, 2010)'' comes from the fact that it is cheaper for a manufacturer to conduct thousands of tests in virtual space, than it is to try multiple experimental designs in the physical world. Through capabilities of HPC …

A Framework For Generating Data To Simulate Application Scoring, Kenneth Kennedy, Sarah Jane Delany, Brian Mac Namee Aug 2011

A Framework For Generating Data To Simulate Application Scoring, Kenneth Kennedy, Sarah Jane Delany, Brian Mac Namee

Conference papers

In this paper we propose a framework to generate artificial data that can be used to simulate credit risk scenarios. Artificial data is useful in the credit scoring domain for two reasons. Firstly, the use of artificial data allows for the introduction and control of variability that can realistically be expected to occur, but has yet to materialise in practice. The ability to control parameters allows for a thorough exploration of the performance of classification models under different conditions. Secondly, due to non-disclosure agreements and commercial sensitivities, obtaining real credit scoring data is a problematic and time consuming task. By …

Amibe: An Imperative Programming Language With First Class Continuations, Yuting Wang Aug 2011

Amibe: An Imperative Programming Language With First Class Continuations, Yuting Wang

Master's Theses

A continuation represents the future of an execution. It is often used as an intermediate representation(IR) to compile functional programming languages, make control flow explicit and full beta-reduction(function inlining) possible. Continuations are also a language feature that gives user the ability to completely control the execution control flow(first class continuation). Efficient implementation of first class continuation is important for languages that need non-determinism and backtracking(e.g., COMET). We present a prototype imperative programming language with first class continuation -- AMIBE. AMIBE uses the LLVM compiler infrastructure which is attractive for its optimizing tools and overall modern organization. However, LLVM does not …

Extensive experiments has been conducted to analyze and compare a set of characteristics of different routing protocols, such as RIPv2, EIGRP, and OSPF by using sophisticated simulation software called OPNET. The characteristics that will be studied include convergence time, scalability, end-to-end delay, and throughput. Different network topologies, such as the star, ring, and mesh, are being tested in the experiments. The experimental results show that RIPv2 has better performance than others in small and condensed networks. OSPF and EIGRP have better performance for medium-sized and scattered networks. Overall EIGRP is more stable and consistent in both small and relatively large …

Isomorph-Free Generation Of 2-Connected Graphs With Applications, Derrick Stolee Aug 2011

Isomorph-Free Generation Of 2-Connected Graphs With Applications, Derrick Stolee

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Many interesting graph families contain only 2-connected graphs, which have ear decompositions. We develop a technique to generate families of unlabeled 2-connected graphs using ear augmentations and apply this technique to two problems. In the first application, we search for uniquely Kr-saturated graphs and find the list of uniquely K4-saturated graphs on at most 12 vertices, supporting current conjectures for this problem. In the second application, we verify the Edge Reconstruction Conjecture for all 2-connected graphs on at most 12 vertices. This technique can be easily extended to more problems concerning 2-connected graphs.

Tcp Congestion Avoidance Algorithm Identification (Caai), Peng Yang, Wen Luo, Lisong Xu, Jitender Deogun, Ying Lu Aug 2011

Tcp Congestion Avoidance Algorithm Identification (Caai), Peng Yang, Wen Luo, Lisong Xu, Jitender Deogun, Ying Lu

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

The Internet has recently been evolving from homogeneous congestion control to heterogeneous congestion control. Several years ago, Internet traffic was mainly controlled by the traditional AIMD algorithm, whereas Internet traffic is now controlled by many different TCP algorithms, such as AIMD, BIC, CUBIC, and CTCP. However, there is very little work on the performance and stability study of the Internet with heterogeneous congestion control. One fundamental reason is the lack of the deployment information of different TCP algorithms. In this paper, we first propose a tool called TCP Congestion Avoidance Algorithm Identification (CAAI) for actively identifying the TCP algorithm of …

A Case Study Of The Effects Of A Web Interface Redesign Based On Usability Guidelines., Paromita Bhattacharya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Usability guidelines for user interface (UI) design formulated by Nielsen and other authorities were used to redesign the web interface for a web based distance education course. The website's original UI, as judged by a group of web design professionals, violated standard guidelines for usability, readability, learnability, consistency, efficiency of use and flexibility. The original and redesigned UIs were tested using thinking aloud testing, a user satisfaction survey, and usability inspection. The results of user testing and heuristic evaluation suggest that the use of these guidelines in website redesign had a positive impact on user performance. A more conclusive result …

Improving Brain-Computer Interface Performance: Giving The P300 Speller Some Color., David B. Ryan Aug 2011

Improving Brain-Computer Interface Performance: Giving The P300 Speller Some Color., David B. Ryan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Individuals who suffer from severe motor disabilities face the possibility of the loss of speech. A Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) can provide a means for communication through non-muscular control. Current BCI systems use characters that flash from gray to white (GW), making adjacent character difficult to distinguish from the target. The current study implements two types of color stimulus (grey to color [GC] and color intensification [CI]) and I hypotheses that color stimuli will; (1) reduce distraction of nontargets (2) enhance target response (3) reduce eye strain. Online results (n=21) show that GC has increased information transfer rate over CI. Mean …

Implementation Of A New Sigmoid Function In Backpropagation Neural Networks., Jeffrey A. Bonnell Aug 2011

Implementation Of A New Sigmoid Function In Backpropagation Neural Networks., Jeffrey A. Bonnell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the use of a new sigmoid activation function in backpropagation artificial neural networks (ANNs). ANNs using conventional activation functions may generalize poorly when trained on a set which includes quirky, mislabeled, unbalanced, or otherwise complicated data. This new activation function is an attempt to improve generalization and reduce overtraining on mislabeled or irrelevant data by restricting training when inputs to the hidden neurons are sufficiently small. This activation function includes a flattened, low-training region which grows or shrinks during back-propagation to ensure a desired proportion of inputs inside the low-training region. With a desired low-training proportion of …

Automated Database Refresh In Very Large And Highly Replicated Environments, Eric King Aug 2011

Automated Database Refresh In Very Large And Highly Replicated Environments, Eric King

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Refreshing non-production database environments is a fundamental activity. A non-productive environment must closely and approximately be related to the productive system and be populated with accurate, consistent data so that the changes before moving into the production system can be tested more effectively. Also if the development system has more related scenario as that of a live system then programming in-capabilities can be minimized. These scenarios add more pressure to get the system refreshed from the production system frequently. Also many organizations need a proven and performant solution to creating or moving data into their nonproduction environments that will neither …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Trustworthiness plays an important role in service selection and usage. However, it is not easy to define and compute the service trustworthiness because of its subject meaning and also the different views on it. in this paper, we describe the meaning of trustworthiness and the computation method for trustworthiness fusion. through extracting trustworthiness from service provider, service requestor and service broker, we creatively adopted D-S (Dempster-Shafer) evident theory to fuse the tripartite trustworthiness. Finally, we completed some comparison experiments on our web service supermarket platform and certified the efficiency of our method. © 2011 IEEE.

Hykss: Hybrid Keyword And Semantic Search, Andrew J. Zitzelberger Aug 2011

Hykss: Hybrid Keyword And Semantic Search, Andrew J. Zitzelberger

Theses and Dissertations

The rapid production of digital information makes the task of locating relevant information increasingly difficult. Keyword search alleviates this difficulty by retrieving documents containing keywords of interest. However, keyword search suffers from a number of issues such ambiguity, synonymy, and the inability to handle semantic constraints. Semantic search helps resolve these issues but is limited by the quality of annotations which are likely to be incomplete or imprecise. Hybrid search, a search technique that combines the merits of both keyword and semantic search, appears to be a promising solution. In this work we introduce HyKSS, a hybrid search system driven …

Computational Pipeline For Human Transcriptome Quantification Using Rna-Seq Data, Guorong Xu

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The main theme of this thesis research is concerned with developing a computational pipeline for processing Next-generation RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) data. RNA-seq experiments generate tens of millions of short reads for each DNA/RNA sample. The alignment of a large volume of short reads to a reference genome is a key step in NGS data analysis. Although storing alignment information in the Sequence Alignment/Map (SAM) or Binary SAM (BAM) format is now standard, biomedical researchers still have difficulty accessing useful information. In order to assist biomedical researchers to conveniently access essential information from NGS data files in SAM/BAM format, we have …

Sea: A Novel Computational And Gui Software Pipeline For Detecting Activated Biological Sub-Pathways, Thair Judeh Aug 2011

Sea: A Novel Computational And Gui Software Pipeline For Detecting Activated Biological Sub-Pathways, Thair Judeh

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

With the ever increasing amount of high-throughput molecular profile data, biologists need versatile tools to enable them to quickly and succinctly analyze their data. Furthermore, pathway databases have grown increasingly robust with the KEGG database at the forefront. Previous tools have color-coded the genes on different pathways using differential expression analysis. Unfortunately, they do not adequately capture the relationships of the genes amongst one another. Structure Enrichment Analysis (SEA) thus seeks to take biological analysis to the next level. SEA accomplishes this goal by highlighting for users the sub-pathways of a biological pathways that best correspond to their molecular profile …
