Model-Free H∞ Stochastic Optimal Design For Unknown Linear Networked Control System Zero-Sum Games Via Q-Learning, Hao Xu, Sarangapani Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, stochastic optimal strategy for unknown linear networked control system (NCS) quadratic zero-sum games related to H∞ optimal control in the presence of random delays and packet losses is solved in forward-in-time manner. This approach does not require the knowledge of the system matrices since it uses Q-learning. the proposed stochastic optimal control approach, referred as adaptive dynamic programming (ADP), involves solving the action dependent Q-function Q (z, u, d) of the zero-sum game instead of solving the state dependent value function J (z) which satisfies a corresponding Game Theoretic Riccati equation (GRE). an adaptive estimator (AE) is …

Nn/Rise-Based Asymptotic Tracking Control Of Uncertain Nonlinear Systems, Qinmin Yang, Sarangapani Jagannathan, Youxian Sun Nov 2011

Nn/Rise-Based Asymptotic Tracking Control Of Uncertain Nonlinear Systems, Qinmin Yang, Sarangapani Jagannathan, Youxian Sun

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a novel control methodology for the tracking control of a high-order continuous time nonlinear systems with unknown dynamics and external disturbance. the control signal consists of the robust integral of the sign of the error (RISE) feedback signal multiplied with an adaptive gain plus neural network (NN) output. the two-layer NN learns the system dynamics in an online manner while residual reconstruction errors and the external bounded system disturbances are overcome by the RISE signal. Semi-global asymptotic tracking performance is theoretically guaranteed by using the Lyapunov standard method, while the NN weights and all other signals are …

Artificial Immune System-Based Diagnostics And Prognostics Scheme And Its Experimental Verification, Gary R. Halligan, Balaje T. Thumati, S. Jagannathan Nov 2011

Artificial Immune System-Based Diagnostics And Prognostics Scheme And Its Experimental Verification, Gary R. Halligan, Balaje T. Thumati, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a novel fault diagnostics and prediction (FDP) scheme is introduced by using artificial immune system (AIS) as an online approximator for a class of nonlinear discrete-time systems. Traditionally, AIS is considered as an offline tool for fault detection (FD). However, in this paper, AIS is utilized as an online approximator in discrete time (OLAD) along with a robust adaptive term in the proposed fault diagnostics observer. using the fact that the system outputs are alone measurable, an output residual is determined by comparing the observer and system outputs and a fault is detected if this output residual …

An Online Model-Based Fault Diagnosis Scheme For Hvac Systems, Balaje T. Thumati, Miles A. Feinstein, James W. Fonda, Alfred Turnbull, Fay J. Weaver, Mark E. Calkins, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a model-based fault detection and isolation (FDI) scheme with online fault learning capabilities is proposed for HVAC systems. an observer comprising of an online approximator in discrete-time (OLAD) and a robust term is used for detection. a fault is detected if the generated detection residual, which is defined as the error between the observer outputs and HVAC system states, exceeds an apriori chosen threshold. the OLAD term in the FD observer learns the fault dynamics online while the robust term guarantees asymptotic estimation of the system states. Subsequent to detection, a fault isolation observer, which comprises of …

Search-Based Fault Localization, Shaowei Wang, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang, - Lucia, Hoong Chuin Lau Nov 2011

Search-Based Fault Localization, Shaowei Wang, David Lo, Lingxiao Jiang, - Lucia, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Many spectrum-based fault localization measures have been proposed in the literature. However, no single fault localization measure completely outperforms others: a measure which is more accurate in localizing some bugs in some programs is less accurate in localizing other bugs in other programs. This paper proposes to compose existing spectrum-based fault localization measures into an improved measure. We model the composition of various measures as an optimization problem and present a search-based approach to explore the space of many possible compositions and output a heuristically near optimal composite measure. We employ two search-based strategies including genetic algorithm and simulated annealing …

Investigating The Role Of The Internet In Women And Minority Stem Participation: A Case Study Of Two Florida Engineering Programs, Arland Nguema Ndong Nov 2011

Investigating The Role Of The Internet In Women And Minority Stem Participation: A Case Study Of Two Florida Engineering Programs, Arland Nguema Ndong

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Despite our awareness of the fascination modern humans have with the Internet, little is known about how and why colleges and universities create and maintain Websites. At the most general level, in this case study, I hypothesize that university Websites serve as communication and marketing tools in attracting students. At the most specific level, I postulate that civil engineering programs with Web pages depicting images of women and minorities would be more successful in recruiting and retaining women and students of color than civil engineering programs with Web pages displaying fewer or no images of women and minorities. The primary …

The Power Of Fair Pricing Mechanisms, Christine Chung, Katrina Ligett, Aaron Roth, Kirk Pruhs Nov 2011

The Power Of Fair Pricing Mechanisms, Christine Chung, Katrina Ligett, Aaron Roth, Kirk Pruhs

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We explore the revenue capabilities of truthful, monotone (“fair”) allocation and pricing functions for resource constrained auction mechanisms within a general framework that encompasses unlimited supply auctions, knapsack auctions, and auctions with general non-decreasing convex production cost functions. We study and compare the revenue obtainable in each fair pricing scheme to the profit obtained by the ideal omniscient multi-price auction. We show that for capacitated knapsack auctions, no constant pricing scheme can achieve any approximation to the optimal profit, but proportional pricing is as powerful as general monotone pricing. In addition, for auction settings with arbitrary bounded non-decreasing convex production …

A Visual Analytics System For Metropolitan Transportation, Siyuan Liu, Ce Liu, Qiong Luo, Lionel M. Ni, Huamin Qu

LARC Research Publications

With the increasing availability of metropolitan transportation data, such as those from vehicle GPSs (Global Positioning systems) and road-side sensors, it becomes viable for authorities, operators, as well as individuals to analyze the data for a better understanding of the transportation system and possibly improved utilization and planning of the system. We report our experience in building the VAST (Visual Analytics for Smart Transportation) system. Our key observation is that metropolitan transportation data are inherently visual as they are spatiotemporal around road networks. Therefore, we visualize traffic data together with digital maps and support analytical queries through this interactive visual …

Exploring Information Technologies To Support Shotgun Proteomics, Alexander M. Mendoza Nov 2011

Exploring Information Technologies To Support Shotgun Proteomics, Alexander M. Mendoza

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Shotgun proteomics refers to the direct analysis of complex protein mixtures to create a profile of the proteins present in the cell. These profiles can be used to study the underlying biological basis for cancer development. Closely studying the profiles as the cancer proliferates reveals the molecular interactions in the cell. They provide clues to researchers on potential drug targets to treat the disease. A little more than a decade old, shotgun proteomics is a relatively new form of discovery, one that is data intensive and requires complex data analysis. Early studies indicated a gap between the ability to analyze …

Performance Improvement For Collection Operations Using Join Query Optimization, Venkata Krishna Suhas Nerella, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Thomas Weigert Nov 2011

Performance Improvement For Collection Operations Using Join Query Optimization, Venkata Krishna Suhas Nerella, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Thomas Weigert

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Programming languages with explicit support for queries over collections allow programmers to express operations on collections more abstractly than relying on their realization in loops or through provided libraries. Join optimization techniques from the field of database technology support efficient realizations of such language constructs. We describe an algorithm that performs run-time query optimization and is effective for single runs of a program. the proposed approach relies on histograms built from the data at run time to estimate the selectivity of joins and predicates in order to construct query plans. Information from earlier executions of the same query during run …

Measuring Stability Of Threshold-Based Feature Selection Techniques, Huanjing Wang, Taghi Khoshgoftaar Nov 2011

Measuring Stability Of Threshold-Based Feature Selection Techniques, Huanjing Wang, Taghi Khoshgoftaar

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Feature selection has been applied in many domains, such as text mining and software engineering. Ideally a feature selection technique should produce consistent out- puts regardless of minor variations in the input data. Re- searchers have recently begun to examine the stability (robustness) of feature selection techniques. The stability of a feature selection method is defined as the degree of agreement between its outputs to randomly-selected subsets of the same input data. This study evaluated the stability of 11 threshold-based feature ranking techniques (rankers) when applied to 16 real-world software measurement datasets of different sizes. Experimental results demonstrate that AUC …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Efforts toward improving the predictiveness in tier-based approaches to virtual screening (VS) have mainly focused on protein kinases. Despite their significance as drug targets, small molecule kinases have been rarely tested with these approaches. In this paper, we investigate the efficacy of a pharmacophore screening-combined structure-based docking approach on the human inducible 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase, an emerging target for cancer chemotherapy. Six out of a total 1364 compounds from NCI's Diversity Set II were selected as true actives via throughput screening. Using a database constructed from these compounds, five programs were tested for structure-based docking (SBD) performance, the MOE of which showed …

Maximum Lifetime Coverage Preserving Scheduling Algorithms In Sensor Networks, Maggie X. Cheng, Xuan Gong Nov 2011

Maximum Lifetime Coverage Preserving Scheduling Algorithms In Sensor Networks, Maggie X. Cheng, Xuan Gong

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In wireless sensor networks, when each target is covered by multiple sensors, sensors can take turns to monitor the targets in order to extend the lifetime of the network. in this paper, we address how to improve network lifetime through optimal scheduling of sensor nodes. We present two algorithms to achieve the maximum lifetime while maintaining the required coverage: A linear programming-Based exponential-time exact solution, and an approximation algorithm. Numerical simulation results from the approximation algorithm are compared to the exact solution and show a high degree of accuracy and efficiency. © 2010 Springer Science Business Media, LLC.

Current cell culture practices are dependent upon human operators and remain laborious and highly subjective, resulting in large variations and inconsistent outcomes, especially when using visual assessments of cell confluency to determine the appropriate time to subculture cells. Although efforts to automate cell culture with robotic systems are underway, the majority of such systems still require human intervention to determine when to subculture. Thus, it is necessary to accurately and objectively determine the appropriate time for cell passaging. Optimal stem cell culturing that maintains cell pluripotency while maximizing cell yields will be especially important for efficient, cost-effective stem cell-based therapies. …

This paper initiates a forensic analysis of the causes of levee failures by analyzing and extracting information from a sequence of elevation data. This is a crucial step in bettering the design and construction of levees and dams. (Fully diagnosing failures usually requires knowledge beyond the geometry of the levee, such as weather conditions and material properties). We use results from computer simulations of levee overtopping for training data. The simulations use smoothed particle hydrodynamics coupled with a well-known erodibility model. Using the sequential nature of our data, we extract important channel networks that form as the soil is scoured …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The emerging Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) technology will enable many exciting applications such as vehicular safety assistance and mobile entertainment. One of the key challenges toward successful roll-out of VANET applications is to provide security and privacy preserving mechanisms for users. Existing efforts on this topic rely heavily on infrastructure like road-side units which however are not available everywhere. to minimize the dependence on infrastructure, we propose a novel Peer-Based Automobile Identity Management (PAIM) Framework which is mainly based on vehicle-to-vehicle communication. PAIM supports dynamic event-Based moving zones formed by vehicles sharing common interest. PAIM achieves the level of privacy …

A Brain-Inspired Model Of Hierarchical Planner, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan Nov 2011

A Brain-Inspired Model Of Hierarchical Planner, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hierarchical planning is an approach of planning by composing and executing hierarchically arranged plans to solve some problems. Most symbolic-based hierarchical planners have been devised to allow the knowledge to be described expressively. However, a great challenge is to automatically seek and acquire new plans on the fly. This paper presents a novel neural-based model of hierarchical planning that can seek and acquired new plans on-line if the necessary knowledge are lacking. Inspired by findings in neuropsychology, plans can be inherently learnt, retrieved, and manipulated simultaneously rather than discretely processed like in most symbolic approaches. Using a multi-channel adaptive resonance …

Beyond Search: Event-Driven Summarization For Web Videos, Richard Hong, Jinhui Tang, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo, Shuicheng Yan, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The explosive growth of Web videos brings out the challenge of how to efficiently browse hundreds or even thousands of videos at a glance. Given an event-driven query, social media Web sites usually return a large number of videos that are diverse and noisy in a ranking list. Exploring such results will be time-consuming and thus degrades user experience. This article presents a novel scheme that is able to summarize the content of video search results by mining and threading "key" shots, such that users can get an overview of main content of these videos at a glance. The proposed …

Learning Human Emotion Patterns For Modeling Virtual Humans, Shu Feng, Ah-Hwee Tan Nov 2011

Learning Human Emotion Patterns For Modeling Virtual Humans, Shu Feng, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Emotion modeling is a crucial part in modeling virtual humans. Although various emotion models have been proposed, most of them focus on designing specific appraisal rules. As there is no unified framework for emotional appraisal, the appraisal variables have to be defined beforehand and evaluated in a subjective way. In this paper, we propose an emotion model based on machine learning methods by taking the following position: an emotion model should mirror actual human emotion in the real world and connect tightly with human inner states, such as drives, motivations and personalities. Specifically, a self-organizing neural model called Emotional Appraisal …

Consistent Community Identification In Complex Networks, Haewoon Kwak, Young-Ho Eom, Yoonchan Choi, Hawoong Jeong Nov 2011

Consistent Community Identification In Complex Networks, Haewoon Kwak, Young-Ho Eom, Yoonchan Choi, Hawoong Jeong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We have found that known community identification algorithms produce inconsistent communities when the node ordering changes at input. We use the pairwise membership probability and consistency to quantify the level of consistency across multiple runs of an algorithm. Based on these two metrics, we address the consistency problem without compromising the modularity. The key insight of the algorithm is to use pairwise membership probabilities as link weights. It offers a new tool in the study of community structures and their evolutions.

Decentralized Optimal Control Of A Class Of Interconnected Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems By Using Online Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman Formulation, Shahab Mehraeen, Sarangapani Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, the direct neural dynamic programming technique is utilized to solve the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation forward-in-time for the decentralized near optimal regulation of a class of nonlinear interconnected discrete-time systems with unknown internal subsystem and interconnection dynamics, while the input gain matrix is considered known. Even though the unknown interconnection terms are considered weak and functions of the entire state vector, the decentralized control is attempted under the assumption that only the local state vector is measurable. the decentralized nearly optimal controller design for each subsystem consists of two neural networks (NNs), an action NN that is aimed to …

The Good, The Bad, And The Actively Verified, John Williamson Nov 2011

The Good, The Bad, And The Actively Verified, John Williamson

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

We believe that we can use active probing for compromise recovery. Our intent is to exploit the differences in behavior between compromised and uncompromised systems and use that information to identify those which are not behaving as expected. Those differences may indicate a deviation in either con figuration or implementation from what we expect on the network, either of which suggests that the misbehaving entity might not be trustworthy. In this work, we propose and build a case for a method for using altered behavior directly resulting from or introduced as a side-effect of the compromise of a network service …

A 3-D Lighting And Shadow Analysis Of The Jfk Zapruder Film (Frame 317), Hany Farid Nov 2011

A 3-D Lighting And Shadow Analysis Of The Jfk Zapruder Film (Frame 317), Hany Farid

Computer Science Technical Reports

Claims of a broader conspiracy behind U.S. President John F. Kennedy's assassination have persisted for the past nearly five decades. The Zapruder film is considered to be the most complete recording of JFK's assassination. Many have claimed that this 8mm film was manipulated to conceal evidence of a second shooter, which would invalidate the claim that a lone gunman, Lee Harvey Oswald, was responsible for JFK's assassination. Here we consider the viability of one specific claim of postproduction tampering in the Zapruder film.

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Although the trend for on-line banking has increased in recent years, the customers have not shown enthusiastic participation in the past and in present. Since the sustainability of a bank supporting on-line-banking service depends on what capacity it can attract new customers, retain already existing customers and how well can it extend its services to the current and future customer base. This investigation is focused on examining if there is any significant difference among the factors namely the transactional security, information design, navigational design, visual design, web site trust, web site satisfaction and e-loyalty over sustainability of on-line banking for …

Coping With Distance: An Empirical Study Of Communication On The Jazz Platform, Renuka Sindhgatta, Bikram Sengupta, Subhajit Datta

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Global software development - which is characterized by teams separated by physical distance and/or time-zone differences - has traditionally posed significant communication challenges. Often these have caused delays in completing tasks, or created misalignment across sites leading to re-work. In recent years, however, a new breed of development environments with rich collaboration features have emerged to facilitate cross-site work in distributed projects. In this paper we revisit the question "does distance matter?" in the context of IBM Jazz Platform -- a state-of-the-art collaborative development environment. We study the ecosystem of a large distributed team of around 300 members across 35 …
