Determination Of Sin2Θeff W Using Jet Charge Measurements In Hadronic Z Decays, D. Buskulic, M. Thulasidas Dec 2011

Determination Of Sin2Θeff W Using Jet Charge Measurements In Hadronic Z Decays, D. Buskulic, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The electroweak mixing angle is determined with high precision from measurements of the mean dierence between forward and backward hemisphere charges in hadronic decays of the Z. A data sample of 2:5 million hadronic Z decays recorded over the period 1990 to 1994 in the ALEPH detector at LEP is used. The mean charge separation between event hemispheres containing the original quark and antiquark is measured for b b and cc events in subsamples selected by their long lifetimes or using fast D 's. The corresponding average charge separation for light quarks is measured in an inclusive sample from the …

Four-Jet Final State Production In E+E- Collisions At Centre-Of-Mass Energies Of 130 And 136 Gev, D. Buskulic, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The four-jet final state is analyzed to search for hadronic decays of pair-produced heavy particles. The analysis uses the ALEPH data collected at LEP in November 1995 at centre-of-mass energies of 130 and 136 GeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 5.7 pb1 . An excess of four-jet events is observed with respect to the standard model predictions. In addition, these events exhibit an enhancement in the sum of the two di-jet masses around 105 GeV/c 2 . The properties of these events are studied and compared to the expectations from standard processes and to pair production hypotheses

Content Contribution Under Revenue Sharing And Reputation Concern In Social Media: The Case Of Youtube, Qian Tang, Bin Gu, Andrew B. Whinston

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A key feature of social media is that it allows individuals and businesses to contribute contents for public viewing. However, little is known about how content providers derive payoffs from such activities. In this study, we build a dynamic structural model to recover the utility function for content providers. Our model distinguishes short-term payoffs based on ad revenue sharing from long-term payoffs driven by content providers’ reputation. The model was estimated using a panel data of 914 top 1000 providers and 381 randomly selected providers on YouTube from Jun 7th, 2010, to Aug 7th, 2011. The two different sets of …

Modeling 3d Articulated Motions With Conformal Geometry Videos (Cgvs), Dao T. P. Quynh, Ying He, Xiaoming Chen, Jiazhi Xia, Qian Sun, Steven C. H. Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

3D articulated motions are widely used in entertainment, sports, military, and medical applications. Among various techniques for modeling 3D motions, geometry videos (GVs) are a compact representation in that each frame is parameterized to a 2D domain, which captures the 3D geometry (x, y, z) to a pixel (r, g, b) in the image domain. As a result, the widely studied image/video processing techniques can be directly borrowed for 3D motion. This paper presents conformal geometry videos (CGVs), a novel extension of the traditional geometry videos by taking into the consideration of the isometric nature of 3D articulated motions. We …

A Dynamic State Metabolic Journey: From Mass Spectrometry To Network Analysis Via Estimation Of Kinetic Parameters, Arockia Ranjitha Dhanasekaran Dec 2011

A Dynamic State Metabolic Journey: From Mass Spectrometry To Network Analysis Via Estimation Of Kinetic Parameters, Arockia Ranjitha Dhanasekaran

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The term "metabolism" refers to the chemical processes occurring in a living organism to convert the food consumed into the energy needed to maintain a living state. Metabolism consists of two states, namely, a dynamic state and a steady state. In the dynamic state, the rate of chemical conversion of a substance is proportional to the amount of substance available, whereas in the steady state this rate is constant and independent of the amount of substance present (Chapter 4 Figure 1). Like all other fields of engineering, metabolic engineering involves the analysis and synthesis of metabolism. Molecular biological tools for …

Development Of A Simulation Tool For Analysis Of Freeway Crashes Due To Cell Phone Usage, Sourabh Sriom

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Research shows that drivers are susceptible to numerous distractions while driving which can be held responsible as the reason of a crash. Usage of cell phones, i.e. talking or texting while driving is considered one of the prominent distractions which causes a crash. This dissertation aims to study the number of crashes occurring on the freeways and their relation with the drivers of these cars using cell phones while they are driving. Since crashes occur relatively less frequently, the study of crashes is done using what is called the "rare event" theory. Java based simulations are done to model a …

Fast Spheroidal Weathering With Colluvium Deposition, Mckay T. Farley Nov 2011

Fast Spheroidal Weathering With Colluvium Deposition, Mckay T. Farley

Theses and Dissertations

It can be difficult to quickly and easily create realistic sandstone terrain. Film makers often need to generate realistic terrain for establishing the setting of their film. Many methods have been created which address terrain generation. One such method is using heightmaps which encode height as a gray-value in a 2d image. Most terrain generation techniques don't admit concavities such as overhangs and arches. We present an algorithm that operates on a voxel grid for creating 3d terrain. Our algorithm uses curvature estimation to weather away the terrain. We speed up our method using a caching mechanism that stores the …

Energy-Efficient Real-Time Data Compression In Wireless Sensor Networks, Tommy Szalapski, Sanjay Madria Nov 2011

Energy-Efficient Real-Time Data Compression In Wireless Sensor Networks, Tommy Szalapski, Sanjay Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Wireless sensor networks possess significant limitations in storage, bandwidth, and power. Additionally, real-time sensor networks cannot tolerate high latency. While some good compression algorithms exist specific to sensor networks, in this paper we present an energy-efficient method with high compression ratio that reduces latency, storage and bandwidth usage further in comparison with some other recently proposed algorithms. Our Huffman style compression scheme exploits temporal locality and delta compression to provide better bandwidth utilization in the network, thus reducing latency for real time applications. Our performance evaluations show comparable compression ratios and energy savings with a significant decrease in latency compared …

Exploration And Comparison Of Methods For Combining Population- And Family-Based Genetic Association Using The Genetic Analysis Workshop 17 Mini-Exome, David W. Fardo, Anthony R. Druen, Jinze Liu, Lucia Mirea, Claire Infante-Rivard, Patrick Breheny Nov 2011

Exploration And Comparison Of Methods For Combining Population- And Family-Based Genetic Association Using The Genetic Analysis Workshop 17 Mini-Exome, David W. Fardo, Anthony R. Druen, Jinze Liu, Lucia Mirea, Claire Infante-Rivard, Patrick Breheny

Biostatistics Faculty Publications

We examine the performance of various methods for combining family- and population-based genetic association data. Several approaches have been proposed for situations in which information is collected from both a subset of unrelated subjects and a subset of family members. Analyzing these samples separately is known to be inefficient, and it is important to determine the scenarios for which differing methods perform well. Others have investigated this question; however, no extensive simulations have been conducted, nor have these methods been applied to mini-exome-style data such as that provided by Genetic Analysis Workshop 17. We quantify the empirical power and false-positive …

Carry And Expand: A New Nomadic Interaction Paradigm, Richard B. Arthur Nov 2011

Carry And Expand: A New Nomadic Interaction Paradigm, Richard B. Arthur

Theses and Dissertations

People are nomadic; traveling from place to place. As a user travels, he may need access to his digital information, including his data, applications, and settings. A convenient way to supply this access is to have the user carry that digital information in a portable computer such as a laptop or smart phone. As Moore's Law continues to operate, devices such as smart phones can easily perform the computing necessary for a user's work. Unfortunately, the amount of data a human can receive and convey through such devices is limited. To receive more information humans require more screen real estate. …

Security Applications Of Formal Language Theory, Len Sassaman, Meredith L. Patterson, Sergey Bratus, Michael E. Locasto, Anna Shubina

Computer Science Technical Reports

We present an approach to improving the security of complex, composed systems based on formal language theory, and show how this approach leads to advances in input validation, security modeling, attack surface reduction, and ultimately, software design and programming methodology. We cite examples based on real-world security flaws in common protocols representing different classes of protocol complexity. We also introduce a formalization of an exploit development technique, the parse tree differential attack, made possible by our conception of the role of formal grammars in security. These insights make possible future advances in software auditing techniques applicable to static and dynamic …

A Foveated System For Wilderness Search And Rescue In Manned Aircraft, Carson D. Fenimore Nov 2011

A Foveated System For Wilderness Search And Rescue In Manned Aircraft, Carson D. Fenimore

Theses and Dissertations

Wilderness search and rescue can be assisted by video searchers in manned aircraft. The video searcher's primary task is to find clues on the ground. Due to altitude, it may be difficult to resolve details on the ground with a standard video camera. As the video streams at a constant frame rate, the searcher may become distracted by other tasks. While handling these tasks the searcher may miss important clues or spend extra time flying over the search area; either outcome decreases both the effectiveness of the video searcher and the chances of successfully finding missing persons. We develop an …

A New Cohesion Metric And Restructuring Technique For Object Oriented Paradigm, Mehmet Kaya, Jim Fawcett

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

When software systems grow large during maintenance, they may lose their quality and become complex to read, understood and maintained. Developing a software system usually requires teams of developers working in concert to provide a finished product in a reasonable amount of time. What that means is many people may read each component of the software system such as a class in object oriented programming environment.

Launching Return-Oriented Programming Attacks Against Randomized Relocatable Executables, Limin Liu, Jin Han, Debin Gao, Jiwu Jing, Daren Zha Nov 2011

Launching Return-Oriented Programming Attacks Against Randomized Relocatable Executables, Limin Liu, Jin Han, Debin Gao, Jiwu Jing, Daren Zha

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Since the day it was proposed, return-oriented programming has shown to be an effective and powerful attack technique against the write or execute only (W ⊕ X) protection. However, a general belief in the previous research is, systems deployed with address space randomization where the executables are also randomized at run-time are able to defend against return-oriented programming, as the addresses of all instructions are randomized. In this paper, we show that due to the weakness of current address space randomization technique, there are still ways of launching return-oriented programming attacks against those well-protected systems efficiently. We demonstrate and evaluate …

Modeling And Designing Fair Rate Control For Wireless Mesh Networks With Partial Interference, Lei Wang Nov 2011

Modeling And Designing Fair Rate Control For Wireless Mesh Networks With Partial Interference, Lei Wang

Theses and Dissertations

Internet rate control protocols, such as TCP, encounter severe performance problems in wireless mesh networks. Because wireless networks use shared communication channels, contention and interference can significantly degrade flow throughput and fairness. Existing research takes either an engineering-based or optimization-based approach to solve the performance problems. The engineering-based approach usually solves a specific observed problem, but does not necessarily optimize the overall performance. The optimization-based approach mathematically models the network to find the optimal resource allocation among competing flows. The model can lead to a distributed rate control algorithm with performance guarantees, but relatively little work has been done to …

A Model Checking Framework For Hierarchical Systems., Truong Khanh Nguyen, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong Nov 2011

A Model Checking Framework For Hierarchical Systems., Truong Khanh Nguyen, Jun Sun, Yang Liu, Jin Song Dong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

BDD-based symbolic model checking is capable of verifying systems with a large number of states. In this work, we report an extensible framework to facilitate symbolic encoding and checking of hierarchical systems. Firstly, a novel library of symbolic encoding functions for compositional operators (e.g., parallel composition, sequential composition, choice operator, etc.) are developed so that users can apply symbolic model checking techniques to hierarchical systems with little knowledge of symbolic encoding techniques (like BDD or CUDD). Secondly, as the library is language-independent, we build an extensible framework with various symbolic model checking algorithms so that the library can be easily …

A Representation Of Selected Nonmanual Signals In American Sign Language, Jerry C. Schnepp Nov 2011

A Representation Of Selected Nonmanual Signals In American Sign Language, Jerry C. Schnepp

College of Computing and Digital Media Dissertations

Computer-generated three-dimensional animation holds great promise for synthesizing utterances in American Sign Language (ASL) that are not only grammatical, but believable by members of the Deaf community. Animation poses several challenges stemming from the massive amounts of data necessary to specify the movement of three-dimensional geometry, and there is no current system that facilitates the synthesis of nonmanual signals. However, the linguistics of ASL can aid in surmounting the challenge by providing structure and rules for organizing the data.

This work presents a first method for representing ASL linguistic and extralinguistic processes that involve the face. Any such representation must …

A Secure Data Aggregation Based Trust Management Approach For Dealing With Untrustworthy Motes In Sensor Network, Nayot Poolsappasit, Sanjay Madria Nov 2011

A Secure Data Aggregation Based Trust Management Approach For Dealing With Untrustworthy Motes In Sensor Network, Nayot Poolsappasit, Sanjay Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Efficient power management is vital for increasing the life of wireless sensor networks (WSN). the main reason is that the radio transmission consumes energy approximately three times comparing to other operations. Thus, techniques such as data aggregation have been widely used in WSN to preserve energy. Despite its appealing and powerful features, data aggregation requires a high level of security as tampering with aggregating data can be suspected due to small bit errors. We propose a comprehensive trust management approach to deal with the potential dishonest and faulty motes in sensor networks. Unlike other trust management approaches, we take into …
