Parsing Combinatory Categorial Grammar With Answer Set Programming: Preliminary Report, Yuliya Lierler, Peter Schüller Jan 2011

Parsing Combinatory Categorial Grammar With Answer Set Programming: Preliminary Report, Yuliya Lierler, Peter Schüller

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Combinatory categorial grammar (CCG) is a grammar formalism used for natural language parsing. CCG assigns structured lexical categories to words and uses a small set of combinatory rules to combine these categories to parse a sentence. In this work we propose and implement a new approach to CCG parsing that relies on a prominent knowledge representation formalism, answer set programming (ASP) — a declarative programming paradigm. We formulate the task of CCG parsing as a planning problem and use an ASP computational tool to compute solutions that correspond to valid parses. Compared to other approaches, there is no need to …

Can Current Packet Analysis Software Detect Bittorrent Activity Or Extract Files From Btp And Μtp Traffic Streams?, William Pung, Andrew Woodward Jan 2011

Can Current Packet Analysis Software Detect Bittorrent Activity Or Extract Files From Btp And Μtp Traffic Streams?, William Pung, Andrew Woodward

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

BitTorrent is a peer to peer file sharing protocol used to exchange files over the internet, and is used for both legal and illegal activity. Newer BitTorrent client programs are using proprietary UDP based protocols as well as TCP to transmit traffic, and also have the option of encrypting the traffic. This network forensic research examined a number of packet analysis programs to determine whether they could detect such traffic from a packet captures of a complete file transmitted using one of four protocol options. The four states examined were: TCP without encryption, TCP with encryption, μTP without encryption and …

Acquisition Of Digital Evidence In Android Smartphones, Andre Morum De L. Simao, Fabio Caus Sicoli, Laerte Peotta De Melo, Rafael Timoteo De Sousa Junior

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

From an expert's perspective, an Android phone is a large data repository that can be stored either locally or remotely. Besides, its platform allows analysts to acquire device data, collecting information about its owner and facts that are under investigation. This way, by exploring and cross referencing that rich data source, one can get information related to unlawful acts and its perpetrator. There are widespread and well documented approaches to forensic examining mobile devices and computers. Nevertheless, they are not specific nor detailed enough to examine modern smartphones, since these devices have internal memories whose removal or mirroring procedures are …

A Genetic Optimization Approach For Isolating Translational Efficiency Bias, Douglas W. Raiford, Dan E. Krane, Travis E. Doom, Michael L. Raymer

Kno.e.sis Publications

The study of codon usage bias is an important research area that contributes to our understanding of molecular evolution, phylogenetic relationships, respiratory lifestyle, and other characteristics. Translational efficiency bias is perhaps the most well studied codon usage bias, as it is frequently utilized to predict relative protein expression levels. We present a novel approach to isolating translational efficiency bias in microbial genomes. There are several existent methods for isolating translational efficiency bias. Previous approaches are susceptible to the confounding influences of other potentially dominant biases. Additionally, existing approaches to identifying translational efficiency bias generally require both genomic sequence information and …

Usage Of And Satisfaction With Online Help Vs. Search Engines For Aid In Software Use, Charles J. Welty Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

Computer users have long been frustrated by software problems. It is unusual that the Help menu actually helps with the software problems they have. At the same time, computer science students and professionals have been using search engines to get help with the complex software they use. The use of search engines to get help with software by both computer scientists and students in other disciplines is investigated. Students from all disciplines tested were found to use and be more satisfied by search engines than Help. Further investigation showed that, generally, students went to other people more than Help or …

Executable Architecture Research At Old Dominion University, Andreas Tolk, Johnny J. Garcia, Edwin A. Shuman Jan 2011

Executable Architecture Research At Old Dominion University, Andreas Tolk, Johnny J. Garcia, Edwin A. Shuman

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

Executable Architectures allow the evaluation of system architectures not only regarding their static, but also their dynamic behavior. However, the systems engineering community do not agree on a common formal specification of executable architectures. To close this gap and identify necessary elements of an executable architecture, a modeling language, and a modeling formalism is topic of ongoing PhD research. In addition, systems are generally defined and applied in an operational context to provide capabilities and enable missions. To maximize the benefits of executable architectures, a second PhD effort introduces the idea of creating an executable context in addition to the …

Active Queue Management Via Event-Driven Feedback Control, Mehmet H. Suzer, Kyoung-Don Kang, Can Basaran Jan 2011

Active Queue Management Via Event-Driven Feedback Control, Mehmet H. Suzer, Kyoung-Don Kang, Can Basaran

Computer Science Faculty Scholarship

Active queue management (AQM) is investigated to avoid incipient congestion in gateways to complement congestion control run by the transport layer protocol such as the TCP. Most existing work on AQM can be categorized as (1) ad-hoc event-driven control and (2) time-driven feedback control approaches based on control theory. Ad hoc event-driven approaches for congestion control, such as RED (random early detection), lack a mathematical model. Thus, it is hard to analyze their dynamics and tune the parameters. Time-driven control theoretic approaches based on solid mathematical models have drawbacks too. As they sample the queue length and run AQM algorithm …

Data Mining Based Learning Algorithms For Semi-Supervised Object Identification And Tracking, Michael P. Dessauer Jan 2011

Data Mining Based Learning Algorithms For Semi-Supervised Object Identification And Tracking, Michael P. Dessauer

Doctoral Dissertations

Sensor exploitation (SE) is the crucial step in surveillance applications such as airport security and search and rescue operations. It allows localization and identification of movement in urban settings and can significantly boost knowledge gathering, interpretation and action. Data mining techniques offer the promise of precise and accurate knowledge acquisition techniques in high-dimensional data domains (and diminishing the “curse of dimensionality” prevalent in such datasets), coupled by algorithmic design in feature extraction, discriminative ranking, feature fusion and supervised learning (classification). Consequently, data mining techniques and algorithms can be used to refine and process captured data and to detect, recognize, classify, …

Visualising Forensic Data: Investigation To Court, Ken Fowle, Damian Schofield Jan 2011

Visualising Forensic Data: Investigation To Court, Ken Fowle, Damian Schofield

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

Visualisation is becoming increasingly important for understanding information, such as investigative data (for example: computing, medical and crime scene evidence) and analysis (for example: network capability assessment, data file reconstruction and planning scenarios). Investigative data visualisation is used to reconstruct a scene or item and is used to assist the viewer (who may well be a member of the general public with little or no understanding of the subject matter) to understand what is being presented. Analysis visualisations, on the other hand, are usually developed to review data, information and assess competing scenario hypotheses for those who usually have an …

How Cios Overcome The Competing Values Challenge: Irish Cios’ Perspectives, Harvey Enns, Dean B. Mcfarlin, Paul B. Sweeney Jan 2011

How Cios Overcome The Competing Values Challenge: Irish Cios’ Perspectives, Harvey Enns, Dean B. Mcfarlin, Paul B. Sweeney

MIS/OM/DS Faculty Publications

Competing values are a fact of organizational life. However, there are gaps in our understanding about how these opposing beliefs hinder influence processes. This article draws on interview data to demonstrate how Irish Chief Information Officers (CIOs) are able to convince their colleagues to support new projects within their firms in the face of competing values. Focused interviews were used to explore the influence process and the competing values phenomenon, since this type of research is at an early stage and qualitative methods and analysis serve as a rich source of theory development.

The data showed that the CIOs who …

Tracing Sources Of Dos And Ddos Attack: Evidential Recovery, Brian Cusack, Cary Ho Jan 2011

Tracing Sources Of Dos And Ddos Attack: Evidential Recovery, Brian Cusack, Cary Ho

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

The ability to trace back to the network source of a computer service attack is an important step in locating evidence that may be used to identify and to prosecute those responsible. The instability of the internetwork environments however makes both tracing and justifying the credibility of evidence obtained challenges for investigators. In this research four methods for tracing the sources of attacks are reviewed and one selected for testing in public and open networks. Specifically the Time-To-Live (TTL) field is to be investigated for trace back potential in a method called the hop count distance method. The results show …

Organisational Preparedness For Hosted Virtual Desktops In The Context Of Digital Forensics, Nirbhay Jawale, Ajit Narayanan

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

Virtualization in computing has progressed to an extent where desktops can be virtualized and accessed from anywhere. The server hosted model has already surpassed 1% market share of the worldwide professional PC market, with estimates indicating that this is a rapidly growing area. This paper investigates the adequacy of current digital forensic procedures on hosted virtual desktops (HVDs) as there does not appear to be specific methods of locating and extracting evidences from this infrastructure. A hosted virtual desktop deployed in private clouds was simulated to reflect two different computer crime scenarios. It was found that current digital forensic procedures …

How To Reconstruct The System's Dynamics By Differentiating Interval-Valued And Set-Valued Functions, Karen Villaverde, Olga Kosheleva Jan 2011

How To Reconstruct The System's Dynamics By Differentiating Interval-Valued And Set-Valued Functions, Karen Villaverde, Olga Kosheleva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To predict the future state of a physical system, we must know the differential equations x = f(x) that describe how this state changes with time. In many practical situations, we can observe individual trajectories x(t). By differentiating these trajectories with respect to time, we can determine the values of f(x) for different states x; if we observe many such trajectories, we can reconstruct the function f( x). However, in many other cases, we do not observe individual systems, we observe a set X of such systems. We can observe how this set X changes, but not how individual …

Memory Access Patterns For Cellular Automata Using Gpgpus, James Michael Balasalle Jan 2011

Memory Access Patterns For Cellular Automata Using Gpgpus, James Michael Balasalle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Today's graphical processing units have hundreds of individual processing cores that can be used for general purpose computation of mathematical and scientific problems. Due to their hardware architecture, these devices are especially effective when solving problems that exhibit a high degree of spatial locality. Cellular automata use small, local neighborhoods to determine successive states of individual elements and therefore, provide an excellent opportunity for the application of general purpose GPU computing. However, the GPU presents a challenging environment because it lacks many of the features of traditional CPUs, such as automatic, on-chip caching of data. To fully realize the potential …

Simulation, Application, And Resilience Of An Organic Neuromorphic Architecture, Made With Organic Bistable Devices And Organic Field Effect Transistors, Robert A. Nawrocki

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents work done simulating a type of organic neuromorphic architecture, modeled after Artificial Neural Network, and termed Synthetic Neural Network, or SNN. The first major contribution of this thesis is development of a single-transistor-single-organic-bistable-device-per-input circuit that approximates behavior of an artificial neuron. The efficacy of this design is validated by comparing the behavior of a single synthetic neuron to that of an artificial neuron as well as two examples involving a network of synthetic neurons. The analysis utilizes electrical characteristics of polymer electronic elements, namely Organic Bistable Device and Organic Field Effect Transistor, created in the laboratory at …

Minimax And Maximin Fitting Of Geometric Objects To Sets Of Points, Yan B. Mayster Jan 2011

Minimax And Maximin Fitting Of Geometric Objects To Sets Of Points, Yan B. Mayster

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis addresses several problems in the facility location sub-area of computational geometry. Let S be a set of n points in the plane. We derive algorithms for approximating S by a step function curve of size k < n, i.e., by an x-monotone orthogonal polyline ℜ with k < n horizontal segments. We use the vertical distance to measure the quality of the approximation, i.e., the maximum distance from a point in S to the horizontal segment directly above or below it. We consider two types of problems: min-ε, where the goal is to minimize the error for a …

Reference Set Metrics For Multi-Objective Algorithms, Chilukuri K. Mohan, Kishan Mehrotra Jan 2011

Reference Set Metrics For Multi-Objective Algorithms, Chilukuri K. Mohan, Kishan Mehrotra

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Several metrics and indicators have been suggested in the past to evaluate multi-objective evolutionary and non-evolutionary algo- rithms. However, these metrics are known to have many problems that make their application sometimes unsound, and sometimes infeasible. This paper proposes a new approach, in which metrics are parameter- ized with respect to a reference set, on which depend the properties of any metric.

Spatial Interactions Between Humans And Assistive Agents, Franz J. Kurfess, Greg Flanagan, Mehul Bhatt Jan 2011

Spatial Interactions Between Humans And Assistive Agents, Franz J. Kurfess, Greg Flanagan, Mehul Bhatt

Computer Science and Software Engineering

While computers assist humans with tasks such as navigation that involve spatial aspects, agents that can interact in a meaningful way in this context are still in their infancy. One core issue is the mismatch in the representation of spatial information a computer-based system is likely to use, and the one a human is likely to use. Computers are better suited for quantitative schemes such as maps or diagrams that rely on measurable distances between entities. Humans frequently use higher-level, domain-specific conceptual representations such as buildings, rooms, or streets for orientation purposes. Combined with the person-centric world view that we …
