Enforcing Information Flow Security Properties In Cyber-Physical Systems: A Generalized Framework Based On Compensation, Thoshitha T. Gamage, Bruce M. Mcmillin, Thomas P. Roth

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a general theory of event compensation as an information flow security enforcement mechanism for Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs). The fundamental research problem being investigated is that externally observable events in modern CPSs have the propensity to divulge sensitive settings to adversaries, resulting in a confidentiality violation. This is a less studied yet emerging concern in modern system security. A viable method to mitigate such violations is to use information flow security based enforcement mechanisms since access control based security models cannot impose restrictions on information propagation. Further, the disjoint nature of security analysis is not appropriate for systems …

The Executable Command In Support Of Scheduled Subroutine Calls, Andrew Scott Lewis Jul 2010

The Executable Command In Support Of Scheduled Subroutine Calls, Andrew Scott Lewis

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A potential solution to improving the utilization of increased thread level parallelism available in modern general purpose CPU's is the inclusion of a hardware scheduler. The hardware scheduler is designed to schedule subroutine calls based on a numerical condition in a high performance memory located on the CPU die, due to which the size of available memory is extremely limited. The main stumbling block in the development of a feasible hardware scheduler is the lack of a method of invoking a scheduled call using a single pointer. The use of a single pointer allows the limited size of the memory …

A Neighborhood Dependent Nonlinear Technique For Enhancement Of Color Images Captured Under Non-Uniform Lighting Conditions, Rupal Patel Jul 2010

A Neighborhood Dependent Nonlinear Technique For Enhancement Of Color Images Captured Under Non-Uniform Lighting Conditions, Rupal Patel

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The aim of image enhancement process is to improve the interpretability of the information in images for human viewers or to provide better input for automated image processing techniques. Many image processing applications begin with a nonlinear enhancement process to improve visual quality of video sequences captured under nonuniform lighting conditions. This improves the visibility of the scene captured from physical sensing devices which have limited dynamic range. This physical limitation causes the saturated region of the image to either shadow out or wash out the rest of the scene. When extremely bright and dark regions are present in an …

A Dynamic Energy-Aware Model For Scheduling Computationally Intensive Bioinformatics Applications, Sachin Pawaskar, Hesham Ali

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

High Performance Computing (HPC) resources are housed in large datacenters, which consume huge amounts of energy and are quickly demanding attention from businesses as they result in high operating costs. On the other hand HPC environments have been very useful to researchers in many emerging areas in life sciences such as Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics. In this paper, we provide a dynamic model for energy aware scheduling (EAS) in a HPC environment; we use a widely used bioinformatics tool named BLAT (BLAST-like alignment tool) running in a HPC environment as our case study. Our proposed EAS model incorporates 2-Phases: an …

Trypanosoma cruzi is a protozoan parasite that causes Chagas disease or American trypanosomiasis, which is the leading cause of death in Latin America. The primary objective of this study is to create an ontology-driven information infrastructure to support parasite researchers in identifying gene knockout, vaccination, or drug targets for T. cruzi. This involves querying across multiple datasets from diverse sources, such as proteome, pathway, internal lab data, etc. that are often represented in heterogeneous formats. To address this, a multi-ontology parasite knowledge repository (PKR) is being created with an intuitive graphical query interface called Cuebee. The PKR is underpinned by …

Health Econometrics: Respiration- Oxygenation Correlation Through Spectral Models, Jamie Macbeth, Majid Sarrafzadeh Jul 2010

Health Econometrics: Respiration- Oxygenation Correlation Through Spectral Models, Jamie Macbeth, Majid Sarrafzadeh

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Medical embedded systems are capable of recording vast data sets for physiological and medical research. Linear modeling techniques are proposed as a means to explore relationships between two or more medical or physiological signal measurements where a causal relationship is believed to be present. Multiple regression is explored for use in medical monitoring, telehealth, and clinical applications.

Spectral regression methods for high-bandwidth medical and physiological signals are demonstrated. The twostage method consists of performing an FFT over a timelagged window of the predictor signal, and constructing a model based on the FFT coefficients. The output of the regression is used …

Star Unfolding Convex Polyhedra Via Quasigeodesic Loops, Jin-Ichi Itoh, Joseph O'Rourke, Costin Vîlcu Jul 2010

Star Unfolding Convex Polyhedra Via Quasigeodesic Loops, Jin-Ichi Itoh, Joseph O'Rourke, Costin Vîlcu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We extend the notion of star unfolding to be based on a quasigeodesic loop Q rather than on a point. This gives a new general method to unfold the surface of any convex polyhedron ℘ to a simple (nonoverlapping) planar polygon: cut along one shortest path from each vertex of ℘ toQ, and cut all but one segment of Q.

Computational Modeling Of Biological Neural Networks On Gpus: Strategies And Performance, Byron Galbraith Jul 2010

Computational Modeling Of Biological Neural Networks On Gpus: Strategies And Performance, Byron Galbraith

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Simulating biological neural networks is an important task for computational neuroscientists attempting to model and analyze brain activity and function. As these networks become larger and more complex, the computational power required grows significantly, often requiring the use of supercomputers or compute clusters. An emerging low-cost, highly accessible alternative to many of these resources is the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) - specialized massively-parallel graphics hardware that has seen increasing use as a general purpose computational accelerator thanks largely due to NVIDIA's CUDA programming interface. We evaluated the relative benefits and limitations of GPU-based tools for large-scale neural network simulation and …

A Differential Absorption Model For Remote Sensing Of Atmospheric Pressure, Shivam J. Shah Jul 2010

A Differential Absorption Model For Remote Sensing Of Atmospheric Pressure, Shivam J. Shah

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The goal of the project is to develop and test a "model based" radar processing strategy that is compatible with the concept of a "cognitive radar". The basic approach will be to develop a cognitive radar algorithm (genetic algorithm) based on the capabilities of an existing commercially available Software Radio. While the focus of this effort is the development of a candidate approach for genetic algorithm, the longer term goal would be to implement the approach using this software radio technology to provide a low cost radar processor. The proposed technology would use differential absorption radar working at the 50-56 …

Algorithmic Temperature 1 Self-Assembly, Yunhui Fu Jul 2010

Algorithmic Temperature 1 Self-Assembly, Yunhui Fu

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

We investigate the power of the Wang tile self-assembly model at temperature 1, a threshold value that permits attachment between any two tiles that share even a single bond. When restricted to deterministic assembly in the plane, no temperature 1 assembly system has been shown to build a shape with a tile complexity smaller than the diameter of the shape. Our work shows a sharp contrast in achievable tile complexity at temperature 1 if either growth into the third dimension or a small probability of error are permitted. Motivated by applications in nanotechnology and molecular computing, and the plausibility of …

A First Practical Algorithm For High Levels Of Relational Consistency, Shant Karakashian, Robert J. Woodward, Christopher Reesons, Berthe Y. Choueiry, Christian Bessiere Jul 2010

A First Practical Algorithm For High Levels Of Relational Consistency, Shant Karakashian, Robert J. Woodward, Christopher Reesons, Berthe Y. Choueiry, Christian Bessiere

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Consistency properties and algorithms for achieving them are at the heart of the success of Constraint Programming. In this paper, we study the relational consistency property R(∗,m)C, which is equivalent to m-wise consistency proposed in relational databases. We also define wR(∗,m)C, a weaker variant of this property. We propose an algorithm for enforcing these properties on a Constraint Satisfaction Problem by tightening the existing relations and without introducing new ones. We empirically show that wR(∗,m)C solves in a backtrack-free manner all the instances of some CSP benchmark classes, thus hinting at the tractability of those classes.

A Self-Organizing Approach To Episodic Memory Modeling, Wenwen Wang, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan Jul 2010

A Self-Organizing Approach To Episodic Memory Modeling, Wenwen Wang, Budhitama Subagdja, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a neural model that learns episodic traces in response to a continual stream of sensory input and feedback received from the environment. The proposed model, based on fusion Adaptive Resonance Theory (fusion ART) network, extracts key events and encodes spatiotemporal relations between events by creating cognitive nodes dynamically. The model further incorporates a novel memory search procedure, which performs parallel search of stored episodic traces continuously. Comparing with prior systems, the proposed episodic memory model presents a robust approach to encoding key events and episodes and recalling them using partial and erroneous cues. We present experimental studies, …

Effective Heuristic Methods For Finding Non-Optimal Solutions Of Interest In Constrained Optimization Models, Steven O. Kimbrough, Ann Kuo, Hoong Chuin Lau Jul 2010

Effective Heuristic Methods For Finding Non-Optimal Solutions Of Interest In Constrained Optimization Models, Steven O. Kimbrough, Ann Kuo, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper introduces the SoI problem, that of finding nonoptimal solutions of interest for constrained optimization models. SoI problems subsume finding FoIs (feasible solutions of interest), and IoIs (infeasible solutions of interest). In all cases, the interest addressed is post-solution analysis in one form or another. Post-solution analysis of a constrained optimization model occurs after the model has been solved and a good or optimal solution for it has been found. At this point, sensitivity analysis and other questions of import for decision making (discussed in the paper) come into play and for this purpose the SoIs can be of …

Supporting Wilderness Search And Rescue With Integrated Intelligence: Autonomy And Information At The Right Time And The Right Place, Michael A. Goodrich, Lanny Lin, Bryan S. Morse, Michael Roscheck Jul 2010

Supporting Wilderness Search And Rescue With Integrated Intelligence: Autonomy And Information At The Right Time And The Right Place, Michael A. Goodrich, Lanny Lin, Bryan S. Morse, Michael Roscheck

Faculty Publications

Current practice in Wilderness Search and Rescue (WiSAR) is analogous to an intelligent system designed to gather and analyze information to find missing persons in remote areas. The system consists of multiple parts — various tools for information management (maps, GPS, etc) distributed across personnel with different skills and responsibilities. Introducing a camera-equipped mini-UAV into this task requires autonomy and information technology that itself is an integrated intelligent system to be used by a sub-team that must be integrated into the overall intelligent system. In this paper, we identify key elements of the integration challenges along two dimensions: (a) attributes …

Correlation-Based Traffic Analysis Attacks On Anonymity Networks, Ye Zhu, Xinwen Fu, Byran Gramham, Riccardo Bettati, Wei Zhao Jul 2010

Correlation-Based Traffic Analysis Attacks On Anonymity Networks, Ye Zhu, Xinwen Fu, Byran Gramham, Riccardo Bettati, Wei Zhao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we address attacks that exploit the timing behavior of TCP and other protocols and applications in low-latency anonymity networks. Mixes have been used in many anonymous communication systems and are supposed to provide countermeasures to defeat traffic analysis attacks. In this paper, we focus on a particular class of traffic analysis attacks, flow-correlation attacks, by which an adversary attempts to analyze the network traffic and correlate the traffic of a flow over an input link with that over an output link. Two classes of correlation methods are considered, namely time-domain methods and frequency-domain methods. Based on our …

Design And Implementation Of A Middleware For Easy Development And Provision Of Stream-Based Services, Seungwoo Kang, Youngki Lee, Sunghwan Ihm, Souneil Park, Su-Myeon Kim, Junehwa Song

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper proposes MISSA, a novel middleware to facilitate the development and provision of stream-based services in emerging pervasive environments. The stream-based services utilize voluminous and continuously updated data streams as their input. The characteristics of data streams bring new requirements on the development and provision of the services. To satisfy the requirements, a unique service model and a runtime system are designed in MISSA. The key concept of our service model is to separate service logic from handling data streams. This significantly mitigates the burden on service developers by allowing them to only concentrate on the service logic. Job …
