Data Protection Models For Service Provisioning In The Cloud, Dan Lin, Anna Squicciarini

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cloud computing enables highly scalable services to be easily consumed over the Internet on an as-needed basis. While cloud computing is expanding rapidly and used by many individuals and organizations internationally, data protection issues in the cloud have not been carefully addressed at current stage. in the cloud, users' data is usually processed remotely in unknown machines that users do not own or operate. Hence, users' fear of confidential data (particularly financial and health data) leakage and loss of privacy in the cloud becomes a significant barrier to the wide adoption of cloud services. to allay users' concerns of their …

The pervasiveness of cellular phones combined with Internet connectivity, GPS embedded chips, location information, and integrated sensors provide an excellent platform to collect data about the individual and its surrounding environment. As a result, new applications have recently appeared to address large-scale societal problems as well as improve the quality of life of the individual. However, these new applications, recently called location-based services, participatory sensing, and human-centric sensing, bring many new challenges, one of them being the management of the huge amount of traffic (data) they generate. This article presents G-Sense, for Global-Sense, an architecture that integrates mobile and static …

Driving Retail Sales Through Effective Supply Chain Management Technology, James Haws Jul 2010

Driving Retail Sales Through Effective Supply Chain Management Technology, James Haws

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Supply chain management coordinates the production and distribution of a product with the goal of increasing profitability and productivity. Advancements in technology and workflows in recent years have enabled distributors, suppliers, and retailers to operate more efficiently and effectively. Although significant technological advancements have been made in supply chain management, inventory management still causes a number of problems for retailers. The average out-of -stock rate nationally is approximately at an 8% level (Corsten & Gruen, 2003). Inadequate inventory management can reduce retail sales, drive up costs associated with transportation and storage, decrease customer loyalty, and ultimately lead to a significant …

Environmental Obfuscation Of A Cyber Physical System - Vehicle Example, Jason Madden, Bruce M. Mcmillin, Anik Sinha Jul 2010

Environmental Obfuscation Of A Cyber Physical System - Vehicle Example, Jason Madden, Bruce M. Mcmillin, Anik Sinha

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) are deeply embedded infrastructures that have significant cyber and physical components that interact with each other in complex ways. These interactions can violate a system's security policy, leading to unintended information flow. The physical portion of such systems is inherently observable, and, as such, many methods of preserving confidentiality are not applicable. This fundamental property of CPSs presents new security challenges. To illustrate this, a vehicle composed of an embedded computer system, its operator, and its environment show how information is disclosed to an observer that is watching from the outside. The example is made of up …

Intelligent Computational Argumentation For Evaluating Performance Scores In Multi-Criteria Decision Making, Xiaoqing Frank Liu, Rubal Wanchoo, Ravi Santosh Arvapally

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multi-Criteria decision making (MCDM), is a discipline aimed at assisting multiple stakeholders in contemplating a decision paradigm in an uncertain environment. the decision analysis to be performed involves numerous alternative positions assessed under varied criterion. a performance score is assigned for each alternative in terms of every criterion, and it represents satisfaction of the criteria by that alternative. in real applications, performance scores are sometimes hard to determine, and they are often subjective. We have developed an intelligent computational argumentation approach for dealing with the problem of uncertainty in resolving the subjective scores. in this approach, an argumentation tree is …

Increasing Cubesat Downlink Capacity With Store-And-Forward Routing And Data Mules, Trevor Koritza, John M. Bellardo

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Pico-satellites have recently gained substantial traction in research and educational communities due to their relatively low cost. The largest factor in keeping the cost down, their small size, also poses their biggest engineering challenge. The tiny, low power radios used to communicate with earth have extremely slow data rates. A typical pico satellite is within communication range of the ground station for approximately 40 minutes per day with a theoretical maximum data rate of 1200 bps. At this speed a high resolution digital photograph can take weeks to download. This paper presents a novel communication protocol that allows a sparse …

Intelligent Time-Aware Query Translation For Text Sources, Amal Kaluarachchi, Aparna S. Varde, Jing Peng, Anna Feldman

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Time-stamped documents such as newswire articles, blog posts and other web-pages are often archived online. Since these archives cover long spans of time, the terminology in them could undergo significant evolution. In answering user queries over such text, it is desirable that the system be intelligent enough to incorporate historical information. For example, a query on Sri Lanka should automatically retrieve documents with its former name Ceylon. Hence, temporal terminology evolution needs to be taken into account to translate these queries. This has become vital today because users expect that computer systems have the intelligence to find all related information …

Motivation: In order to construct gene regulatory networks of higher organisms from gene expression and promoter sequence data efficiently, we developed FastMEDUSA. In this parallelized version of the regulatory network-modeling tool MEDUSA, expression and sequence data are shared among a user-defined number of processors on a single multi-core machine or cluster. Our results show that FastMEDUSA allows a more efficient utilization of computational resources. While the determination of a regulatory network of brain tumor in Homo sapiens takes 12 days with MEDUSA, FastMEDUSA obtained the same results in 6 h by utilizing 100 processors. Availability: Source code and documentation of …

Investigating Impact Of Quorum Construction On Data Processing In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Takahiro Hara, Sanjay K. Madria, Shojiro Nishio

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In a mobile ad hoc network (MANET), since mobility of mobile hosts causes frequent network partitioning, consistency management of data operations on replicas becomes a crucial issue. in our previous work, we have defined several consistency levels for MANET applications and designed protocols to achieve these consistency levels. These protocols are mainly based on a dynamic quorum system to cope with network partitioning and node and network failures. in this paper, we further investigate the impact of quorum construction on the system performance through simulation studies. Specifically, we change the number of mobile hosts that replicate data items, and which …

A Probabilistic Morphological Analyzer For Syriac, Peter J. Mcclanahan Jul 2010

A Probabilistic Morphological Analyzer For Syriac, Peter J. Mcclanahan

Theses and Dissertations

We show that a carefully crafted probabilistic morphological analyzer significantly outperforms a reasonable, naive baseline for Syriac. Syriac is an under-resourced Semitic language for which there are no available language tools such as morphological analyzers. Such tools are widely used to contribute to the process of annotating morphologically complex languages. We introduce and connect novel data-driven models for segmentation, dictionary linkage, and morphological tagging in a joint pipeline to create a probabilistic morphological analyzer requiring only labeled data. We explore the performance of this model with varying amounts of training data and find that with about 34,500 tokens, it can …

On Index Merging For Semantic Web Data, Lubomir Stanchev Jul 2010

On Index Merging For Semantic Web Data, Lubomir Stanchev

Computer Science and Software Engineering

In this paper we explore the properties of description indices that store concept descriptions rather than plain data. Although these novel data structures are beneficial for efficiently answering semantic web queries, expressed in a language such as nRQL or SPARQL-DL, they take extra storage and their maintenance can become a performance bottleneck. In order to alleviate these shortcomings, we introduce a procedure for merging description indices. Experimental results over the LUBM benchmark show that this technique can result in economy of storage space, while the performance is slightly affected for a static workload and is improved for a dynamic workload.

Robust Fuzzy Cpu Utilization Control For Dynamic Workloads, Can Basaran, Mehmet H. Suzer, Kyoung-Don Kang, Xue Liu Jul 2010

Robust Fuzzy Cpu Utilization Control For Dynamic Workloads, Can Basaran, Mehmet H. Suzer, Kyoung-Don Kang, Xue Liu

Computer Science Faculty Scholarship

In a number of real-time applications such as target tracking, precise workloads are unknown a priori but may dynamically vary, for example, based on the changing number of targets to track. It is important to manage the CPU utilization, via feedback control, to avoid severe overload or underutilization even in the presence of dynamic workloads. However, it is challenge to model a real-time system for feedback control, as computer systems cannot be modeled via physics laws. In this paper, we present a novel closed-loop approach for utilization control based on formal fuzzy logic control theory, which is very effective to …

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper documents the development of an underwater robot system enabled with several mapping and localization techniques applied to a particular archaeological expedition. The goal of the expedition was to explore and map ancient cisterns located on the islands of Malta and Gozo. The cisterns of interest acted as water storage systems for fortresses, private homes, and churches. Such cisterns often consisted of several connected chambers, still containing water. A sonar-equipped remotely operated vehicle (ROV) was deployed into these cisterns to obtain both video footage and sonar range measurements. Six different mapping and localization techniques were employed, including (1) sonar …

Trust Model For Semantic Sensor And Social Networks: A Preliminary Report, Pramod Anantharam, Cory Andrew Henson, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Trust is an amorphous concept that is becoming Increasingly important in many domains, such as P2P networks, E-commerce, social networks, and sensor networks. While we all have an intuitive notion of trust, the literature is scattered with a wide assortment of differing definitions and descriptions; often these descriptions are highly dependent on a single domain or application of interest. In addition, they often discuss orthogonal aspects of trust while continuing to use the general term “trust”. In order to make sense of the situation, we have developed an ontology of trust that integrates and relates its various aspects into a …

The ability to rise from a chair is an important parameter to assess the balance deficits of a person. In particular, this can be an indication of risk for falling in elderly persons. Our goal is automated assessment of fall risk using video data. Towards this goal, we present a simple yet effective method of detecting transition, i.e. sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit, from image frames using fuzzy clustering methods on image moments. The technique described in this paper is shown to be robust even in the presence of noise and has been tested on several data sequences using different subjects yielding …

Accelerating Image Feature Comparisons Using Cuda On Commodity Hardware, Amy Apon, Seth Warn, Wesley Emeneker, John Gauch, Jackson Cothren Jul 2010

Accelerating Image Feature Comparisons Using Cuda On Commodity Hardware, Amy Apon, Seth Warn, Wesley Emeneker, John Gauch, Jackson Cothren

Publications

Given multiple images of the same scene, image registration is the process of determining the correct transformation to bring the images into a common coordinate system—i.e., how the images fit together. Feature based registration applies a transformation function to the input images before performing the correlation step. The result of that transformation, also called feature extraction, is a list of significant points in the images, and the registration process will attempt to correlate these points, rather than directly comparing the input images.

Shrinking Symbolic Regression Over Medical And Physiological Signals, Jamie Macbeth, Majid Sarrafzadeh Jul 2010

Shrinking Symbolic Regression Over Medical And Physiological Signals, Jamie Macbeth, Majid Sarrafzadeh

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Medical embedded systems of the present and future are recording vast sets of data related to medical conditions and physiology. Linear modeling techniques are proposed as a means to help explain relationships between two or more medical or physiological signal measurements from the same human subject. In this paper a statistical regression algorithm is explored for use in medical monitoring, telehealth, and medical research applications.

An essential element in applying linear modeling to physiological data is determining functional forms for the predictor signals. In this paper we demonstrate an efficient method for symbolic regression and model selection among possible transformation …

New Algorithms For Protein Structure Comparison And Protein Structure Prediction, Zaixin Lu Jul 2010

New Algorithms For Protein Structure Comparison And Protein Structure Prediction, Zaixin Lu

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Proteins show a great variety of 3D conformations, which can be used to infer their evolutionary relationship and to classify them into more general groups; therefore algorithms of protein structure alignment, protein similarity search and protein structure prediction are very helpful for protein biologists. We developed new algorithms for the problems in this field. The algorithms are tested with structures from the Protein Data Bank (PDB) and SCOP, a Structure Classification of Protein Database. The experimental results show that our tools are more efficient than some well known systems for finding similar protein structures and predicting protein structures.

Electronic Library Database Application, Visar Nura Jul 2010

Electronic Library Database Application, Visar Nura

Theses and Dissertations

It's probably fair to say that most business-oriented computer applications work with data in one form or another. This data often is stored in one or more databases. Visual Basic can create powerful data management programs with a little planning and effort. The most fundamental part of that planning is in how the data is structured. A poorly designed database can doom even the most well-intentioned program from the start. On the other hand, a well-designed database can make a programmer's life much easier. Creating an organized data structure requires you to learn about two separate tasks. First, you must …

Learning To Rank Only Using Training Data From Related Domain, Wei Gao, Peng Cai, Kam-Fai Wong, Aoying Zhou Jul 2010

Learning To Rank Only Using Training Data From Related Domain, Wei Gao, Peng Cai, Kam-Fai Wong, Aoying Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Like traditional supervised and semi-supervised algorithms, learning to rank for information retrieval requires document annotations provided by domain experts. It is costly to annotate training data for different search domains and tasks. We propose to exploit training data annotated for a related domain to learn to rank retrieved documents in the target domain, in which no labeled data is available. We present a simple yet effective approach based on instance-weighting scheme. Our method first estimates the importance of each related-domain document relative to the target domain. Then heuristics are studied to transform the importance of individual documents to the pairwise …
