Personal Vs. Social, Magdalini Eirinaki Sep 2010

Personal Vs. Social, Magdalini Eirinaki

Faculty Publications

The last few years we witnessed an impressive growth in social networks and in applications that add value to their amassed information. At the same time, the continuing expansion of mobile platforms and applications (e.g. iPhone), combined with the overwhelming supply of information and services, makes effective personalization and context-awareness much required features. One may consider "personal" and "social" data management as comprising two distinct directions with conflicting characteristics. However, it can be argued that they complement each other and that in future applications they will ultimately converge. This "personal vs. social" predicament presents a number of interesting topics that …

P2pdoctagger: Content Management Through Automated P2p Collaborative Tagging, Hock Hee Ang, Vivekanand Gopalkrishnan, Wee Keong Ng, Steven C. H. Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As the amount of user generated content grows, personal information management has become a challenging problem. Several information management approaches, such as desktop search, document organization and (collaborative) document tagging have been proposed to address this, however they are either inappropriate or inefficient. Automated collaborative document tagging approaches mitigate the problems of manual tagging, but they are usually based on centralized settings which are plagued by problems such as scalability, privacy, etc. To resolve these issues, we present P2PDocTagger, an automated and distributed document tagging system based on classification in P2P networks. P2P-DocTagger minimizes the efforts of individual peers and …

A Hoare Calculus For Graph Programs, Christopher M. Poskitt, Detlef Plump Sep 2010

A Hoare Calculus For Graph Programs, Christopher M. Poskitt, Detlef Plump

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present Hoare-style axiom schemata and inference rules for verifying the partial correctness of programs in the graph programming language GP. The pre- and postconditions of this calculus are the nested conditions of Habel, Pennemann and Rensink, extended with expressions for labels in order to deal with GP’s conditional rule schemata and infinite label alphabet. We show that the proof rules are sound with respect to GP’s operational semantics.

Do Online Reviews Reflect A Product’S True Perceived Quality? An Investigation Of Online Movie Reviews Across Cultures, Noi Sian Koh, Nan Hu, Eric K. Clemons Sep 2010

Do Online Reviews Reflect A Product’S True Perceived Quality? An Investigation Of Online Movie Reviews Across Cultures, Noi Sian Koh, Nan Hu, Eric K. Clemons

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper investigates when the reported average of online ratings matches the perceived average assessment of the population as a whole, including the average assessments of both raters and non-raters. We apply behavioral theory to capture intentions in rating online movie reviews in two dissimilar countries – China and the United States. We argue that consumers’ rating behaviors are affected by cultural influences and that they are influenced in predictable ways. Based on data collected from IMDB.com and Douban.com, we found significant differences across raters from these two different cultures. Additionally, we examined how cultural elements influence rating behavior for …

Shortest Path Computation On Air Indexes, Georgios Kellaris, Kyriakos Mouratidis Sep 2010

Shortest Path Computation On Air Indexes, Georgios Kellaris, Kyriakos Mouratidis

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Shortest path computation is one of the most common queries in location-based services that involve transportation net- works. Motivated by scalability challenges faced in the mo- bile network industry, we propose adopting the wireless broad- cast model for such location-dependent applications. In this model the data are continuously transmitted on the air, while clients listen to the broadcast and process their queries locally. Although spatial problems have been considered in this environment, there exists no study on shortest path queries in road networks. We develop the rst framework to compute shortest paths on the air, and demonstrate the practicality and …

Pseudonym-Based Rfid Discovery Service To Mitigate Unauthorized Tracking In Supply Chain Management, Qiang Yan, Robert H. Deng, Zheng Yan, Yingjiu Li, Tieyan Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Unauthorized tracking of RFID tagged assets at the system level, where an adversary tracks movement of RFID tagged assets by eavesdropping network messages or compromising date center servers, has not been well recognized in prior research. Compared to the traditional unauthorized tracking by clandestine scanning at the physical level, unauthorized tracking at the system level could be even more harmful as the adversary is able to obtain tracking information on a global scale and without physical presence. This paper analyzes the threat of unauthorized tracking by a semi-trusted RFID Discovery Service which maintains a database of RFID tag location records …

An Automated Approach For Finding Variable-Constant Pairing Bugs, Julia Lawall, David Lo Sep 2010

An Automated Approach For Finding Variable-Constant Pairing Bugs, Julia Lawall, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Named constants are used heavily in operating systems code, both as internal flags and in interactions with devices. Decision making within an operating system thus critically depends on the correct usage of these values. Nevertheless, compilers for the languages typically used in implementing operating systems provide little support for checking the usage of named constants. This affects correctness, when a constant is used in a context where its value is meaningless, and software maintenance, when a constant has the right value for its usage context but the wrong name. We propose a hybrid program-analysis and data-mining based approach to identify …

Matching Dependence-Related Queries In The System Dependence Graph., Xiaoyin Wang, David Lo, Jiefeng Cheng, Lu Zhang, Hong Mei, Jeffrey Xu Yu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In software maintenance and evolution, it is common that developers want to apply a change to a number of similar places. Due to the size and complexity of the code base, it is challenging for developers to locate all the places that need the change. A main challenge in locating the places that need the change is that, these places share certain common dependence conditions but existing code searching techniques can hardly handle dependence relations satisfactorily. In this paper, we propose a technique that enables developers to make queries involving dependence conditions and textual conditions on the system dependence graph …

Natural Selection On Mrna Secondary Structure And Its Correlation With Protein Functional Groups, Suresh Solaimuthu Aug 2010

Natural Selection On Mrna Secondary Structure And Its Correlation With Protein Functional Groups, Suresh Solaimuthu

Dissertations

Natural selection may occur at multiple levels of the biological hierarchy, including at the molecular level. It may occur on any phenotypic trait that evidences variation and that is heritable. This research uses computational methods to investigate whether the stability of the secondary structures of mRNAs has been the subject of natural selection.

The DNA sequence that codes for a particular target protein is only partially determined by that protein, since the redundancy of the genetic code permits multiple possible synonymous codons for each peptide. An RNA transcript of a DNA protein template (gene) folds back on itself through complementary …

Architecture And Compiler Support For Leakage Reduction Using Power Gating In Microprocessors, Soumyaroop Roy Aug 2010

Architecture And Compiler Support For Leakage Reduction Using Power Gating In Microprocessors, Soumyaroop Roy

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Power gating is a technique commonly used for runtime leakage reduction in digital CMOS circuits. In microprocessors, power gating can be implemented by using sleep transistors to selectively deactivate circuit modules when they are idle during program execution. In this dissertation, a framework for power gating arithmetic functional units in embedded microprocessors with architecture and compiler support is proposed. During compile time, program regions are identified where one or more functional units are idle and sleep instructions are inserted into the code so that those units can be put to sleep during program execution. Subsequently, when their need is detected …

A Framework For The Automatic Physical Configuration And Tuning Of A Mysql Community Server, Kevin Spillane

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Manual physical configuration and tuning of database servers, is a complicated task requiring a high level of expertise. Database administrators must consider numerous possibilities, to determine a candidate configuration for implementation. In recent times database vendors have responded to this problem, providing solutions which can automatically configure and tune their products. Poor configuration choices, resulting in performance degradation commonplace in manual configurations, have been significantly reduced in these solutions. However, no such solution exists for MySQL Community Server. This thesis, proposes a novel framework for automatically tuning a MySQL Community Server. A first iteration of the framework has been built …

3dq: Threat Dome Visibility Querying On Mobile Devices, James Carswell, Keith Gardiner, Junjun Yin Aug 2010

3dq: Threat Dome Visibility Querying On Mobile Devices, James Carswell, Keith Gardiner, Junjun Yin

Articles

3DQ (Three Dimensional Query) is our mobile spatial interaction (MSI) prototype for location and orientation aware mobile devices (i.e. today's sensor enabled smartphones). The prototype tailors a military style threat dome query calculation using MSI with hidden query removal functionality for reducing “information overload” on these off-the-shelf devices. The effect gives a more accurate and expected query result for Location-Based Services (LBS) applications by returning information on only those objects visible within a user’s 3D field-of-view. Our standardised XML based request/response design enables any mobile device, regardless of operating system and/or programming language, to access the 3DQ web-service interfaces.

In this paper, we propose a five-step approach to detect obfuscated malware by investigating the structural and behavioural features of API calls. We have developed a fully automated system to disassemble and extract API call features effectively from executables. Using n-gram statistical analysis of binary content, we are able to classify if an executable file is malicious or benign. Our experimental results with a dataset of 242 malwares and 72 benign files have shown a promising accuracy of 96.5% for the unigram model. We also provide a preliminary analysis by our approach using support vector machine (SVM) and by varying …

Mitigating Cyber-Threats Through Public-Private Partnerships: Low Cost Governance With High-Impact Returns , David M. Cook

International Cyber Resilience conference

The realization that cyber threats can cause the same devastation to a country as physical security risks has taken the long route towards acceptance. Governments and businesses have thrown the glove of responsibility back and forth on numerous occasions, with government agencies citing the need for private enterprise to take up the mantle, and Business returning the gesture by proposing a ‘national’ perspective on cyber security. Ambit claims such as these drain a range of security resources when both sides should work in concert by directing all available energy towards resolving cyber-threats. This paper compares the public-private arrangements through Australasia …

Penetration Testing And Vulnerability Assessments: A Professional Approach, Konstantinos Xynos, Iain Sutherland, Huw Read, Emlyn Everitt, Andrew J C Blyth

International Cyber Resilience conference

Attacks against computer systems and the data contained within these systems are becoming increasingly frequent and evermore sophisticated. So-called “zero-day” exploits can be purchased on black markets and Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) can lead to exfiltration of data over extended periods. Organisations wishing to ensure security of their systems may look towards adopting appropriate measures to protect themselves against potential security breaches. One such measure is to hire the services of penetration testers (or “pen-tester”) to find vulnerabilities present in the organisation’s network, and provide recommendations as to how best to mitigate such risks. This paper discusses the definition and …

Is Cyber Resilience In Medical Practice Security Achievable? , Patricia A H Williams

International Cyber Resilience conference

Australia is moving to a national e-health system with a high level of interconnectedness. The scenario for recovery of such a system, particularly once it is heavily relied upon, may be complex. Primary care medical practices are a fundamental part of the new e-health environment yet function as separate business entities within Australia’s healthcare system. Individually this means that recovery would be reliant on the self-sufficiency of each medical practice. However, the ability of these practices to individually and collectively recover is questionable. The current status of information security in primary care medical practices is compared to the needs of …

Unusual-Object Detection In Color Video For Wilderness Search And Rescue, Daniel Richard Thornton

Theses and Dissertations

Aircraft-mounted cameras have potential to greatly increase the effectiveness of wilderness search and rescue efforts by collecting photographs or video of the search area. The more data that is collected, the more difficult it becomes to process it by visual inspection alone. This work presents a method for automatically detecting unusual objects in aerial video to assist people in locating signs of missing persons in wilderness areas. The detector presented here makes use of anomaly detection methods originally designed for hyperspectral imagery. Multiple anomaly detection methods are considered, implemented, and evaluated. These anomalies are then aggregated into spatiotemporal objects by …
