Cast2face: Character Identification In Movie With Actor-Character Correspondence, Mengdi Xu, Xiaotong Yuan, Jialie Shen, Shuicheng Yan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We investigate the problem of automatically identifying characters in a movie with the supervision of actor-character name correspondence provided by the movie cast. Our proposed framework, namely Cast2Face, is featured by: (i) we restrict the names to assign within the set of character names in the cast; (ii) for each character, by using the corresponding actor's name as a key word, we retrieve from Google image search a group of face images to form the gallery set; and (iii) the probe face tracks in the movie are then identified as one of the actors by robust multi-task joint sparse representation …

Context Modeling For Ranking And Tagging Bursty Features In Text Streams, Xin Zhao, Jing Jiang, Jing He, Xiaoming Li, Hongfei Yan, Dongdong Shan Oct 2010

Context Modeling For Ranking And Tagging Bursty Features In Text Streams, Xin Zhao, Jing Jiang, Jing He, Xiaoming Li, Hongfei Yan, Dongdong Shan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Bursty features in text streams are very useful in many text mining applications. Most existing studies detect bursty features based purely on term frequency changes without taking into account the semantic contexts of terms, and as a result the detected bursty features may not always be interesting or easy to interpret. In this paper we propose to model the contexts of bursty features using a language modeling approach. We then propose a novel topic diversity-based metric using the context models to find newsworthy bursty features. We also propose to use the context models to automatically assign meaningful tags to bursty …

Mining Collaboration Patterns From A Large Developer Network, Didi Surian, David Lo, Ee Peng Lim Oct 2010

Mining Collaboration Patterns From A Large Developer Network, Didi Surian, David Lo, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this study, we extract patterns from a large developer collaborations network extracted from Source Forge. Net at high and low level of details. At the high level of details, we extract various network-level statistics from the network. At the low level of details, we extract topological sub-graph patterns that are frequently seen among collaborating developers. Extracting sub graph patterns from large graphs is a hard NP-complete problem. To address this challenge, we employ a novel combination of graph mining and graph matching by leveraging network-level properties of a developer network. With the approach, we successfully analyze a snapshot of …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A community of users who report bugs and request features provides valuable feedback that can be used in product development. We compare the community involvement in issue tracker usage between the open source project Eclipse and the closed source project IBM Jazz to evaluate if publicly accessible issue trackers work as well in closed source projects. We find that IBM Jazz successfully receives user feedback through this channel. We then explore the differences in work item processing in IBM Jazz between team members, project members and externals. We conclude that making public issue trackers available in closed source projects is …

This study will explore and analyze native auditing supported by Microsoft's SQL Server 2008 …

Drug Off-Target Effects Predicted Using Structural Analysis In The Context Of A Metabolic Network Model, Roger L. Chang, Lei Xie, Philip E. Bourne, Bernhard O. Palsson Sep 2010

Drug Off-Target Effects Predicted Using Structural Analysis In The Context Of A Metabolic Network Model, Roger L. Chang, Lei Xie, Philip E. Bourne, Bernhard O. Palsson

Publications and Research

Recent advances in structural bioinformatics have enabled the prediction of protein-drug off-targets based on their ligand binding sites. Concurrent developments in systems biology allow for prediction of the functional effects of system perturbations using large-scale network models. Integration of these two capabilities provides a framework for evaluating metabolic drug response phenotypes in silico. This combined approach was applied to investigate the hypertensive side effect of the cholesteryl ester transfer protein inhibitor torcetrapib in the context of human renal function. A metabolic kidney model was generated in which to simulate drug treatment. Causal drug off-targets were predicted that have previously been …

A Correlation Attack Against User Mobility Privacy In A Large-Scale Wlan Network, Keren Tan, Guanhua Yan, Jihwang Yeo, David Kotz Sep 2010

A Correlation Attack Against User Mobility Privacy In A Large-Scale Wlan Network, Keren Tan, Guanhua Yan, Jihwang Yeo, David Kotz

Dartmouth Scholarship

User association logs collected from real-world wireless LANs have facilitated wireless network research greatly. To protect user privacy, the common practice in sanitizing these data before releasing them to the public is to anonymize users' sensitive information such as the MAC addresses of their devices and their exact association locations. In this work,we demonstrate that these sanitization measures are insufficient in protecting user privacy from a novel type of correlation attack that is based on CRF (Conditional Random Field). In such a correlation attack, the adversary observes the victim's AP (Access Point) association activities for a short period of time …

Improving Information Products For System 2 Decision Support, Neal Gibson Sep 2010

Improving Information Products For System 2 Decision Support, Neal Gibson

Theses and Dissertations

The creation, maintenance, and management of Information Product (IP) systems that are used by organizations for complex decisions represent a unique set of challenges. These challenges are compounded when the purpose of such a systems is also for knowledge creation and dissemination. Information quality research to date has focused mainly upon treating IP independent from the actual users, despite the obvious interdependency between the two. Research in cognitive psychology has established a dual-process model for human cognition. Designing IP systems in recognition of these differing methods of human cognition represents a new approach to improving their quality. Education data and …

Knowledge-Driven Identity Resolution For Longitudinal Education Data, Greg Holland Sep 2010

Knowledge-Driven Identity Resolution For Longitudinal Education Data, Greg Holland

Theses and Dissertations

Data sets containing information for an overlapping group of real-world identities present a very high likelihood that the identifying attributes and attribute values for these identities may be inconsistent between the data sets. Differences in the types of identifying attributes or attribute values inhibit proper record linkage and identity resolution. Traditional approaches to record linkage are commonly utilized however the results from these approaches do not demonstrate the highest possible levels of confidence and utility. Syntax, semantics, and temporal aspects of data sets should be understood and incorporated into the methodology of heterogeneous data set integration. Domain-specific expertise is a …

A Java Prototype Implementation Of Coordination For Heterogeneous, Distributed, And Parallel Programming, Hao Wu

Theses and Dissertations

Heterogeneous distributed parallel programming skills are in rapidly rising demand for developing applications in emerging fields such as MRI spin relaxometry, gene sequence analysis, climate modeling, and molecular modeling of potential bioactive compounds that require massive amounts of computation. However, heterogeneous distributed and parallel programming is not a trivial task for programmers. Programmers are overwhelmed to program at a low level with specific target machines or are faced with unfamiliar programming models. In this thesis, we introduce a framework to support heterogeneous distributed programming in a sequential programming language Java for parallelism. The framework has four layers (application layer, coordination …

Professional Implications Of Using Online Social Networking Systems By Persons Who Are Blind, Steven A. Kurutz

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The online social networking (OSN) phenomenon has grown dramatically over the past decade, with websites such as Facebook and Twitter becoming household names. Although a lot of literature exists on online social networking systems, little exists on these systems' practical impact on the offline world, beyond cyberspace. Similarly, little attention has been given to the use of these systems by persons who are blind or have other disabilities. This research attempts to redress this situation by exploring the relationship between the usage of OSN systems and professional achievement for persons who are blind.

Statistical Image Recovery From Laser Speckle Patterns With Polarization Diversity, Donald B. Dixon Sep 2010

Statistical Image Recovery From Laser Speckle Patterns With Polarization Diversity, Donald B. Dixon

Theses and Dissertations

This research extends the theory and understanding of the laser speckle imaging technique. This non-traditional imaging technique may be employed to improve space situational awareness and image deep space objects from a ground-based sensor system. The use of this technique is motivated by the ability to overcome aperture size limitations and the distortion effects from Earth’s atmosphere. Laser speckle imaging is a lensless, coherent method for forming two-dimensional images from their autocorrelation functions. Phase retrieval from autocorrelation data is an ill-posed problem where multiple solutions exist. This research introduces polarization diversity as a method for obtaining additional information so the …

Cyber Situational Awareness Using Live Hypervisor-Based Virtual Machine Introspection, Dustyn A. Dodge Sep 2010

Cyber Situational Awareness Using Live Hypervisor-Based Virtual Machine Introspection, Dustyn A. Dodge

Theses and Dissertations

In this research, a compiled memory analysis tool for virtualization (CMAT-V) is developed as a virtual machine introspection (VMI) utility to conduct live analysis during cyber attacks. CMAT-V leverages static memory dump analysis techniques to provide live dynamic system state data. Unlike some VMI applications, CMAT-V bridges the semantic gap using derivation techniques. CMAT-V detects Windows-based operating systems and uses the Microsoft Symbol Server to provide this context to the user. This research demonstrates the usefulness of CMAT-V as a situational awareness tool during cyber attacks, tests the detection of CMAT-V from the guest system level and measures its impact …

Hijacking User Uploads To Online Persistent Data Repositories For Covert Data Exfiltration, Curtis P. Barnard

Theses and Dissertations

As malware has evolved over the years, it has gone from harmless programs that copy themselves into other executables to modern day botnets that perform bank fraud and identity theft. Modern malware often has a need to communicate back to the author, or other machines that are also infected. Several techniques for transmitting this data covertly have been developed over the years which vary significantly in their level of sophistication. This research creates a new covert channel technique for stealing information from a network by piggybacking on user-generated network traffic. Specifically, steganography drop boxes and passive covert channels are merged …
