Simulating Levee Erosion With Physical Modeling Validation, Jared Gross, Christopher S. Stuetzle, Zhongxian Chen, Barbara Cutler, W. Randolph Franklin, Thomas F. Zimmie Oct 2010

Simulating Levee Erosion With Physical Modeling Validation, Jared Gross, Christopher S. Stuetzle, Zhongxian Chen, Barbara Cutler, W. Randolph Franklin, Thomas F. Zimmie

Computer and Data Science Faculty Publications

This paper studies rill and gully initiation and propagation on levees, dams, and general earth embankments. It specifically studies where these erosion features occur, and how long a particular embankment can sustain overtopping before breaching and catastrophic failure. This contrasts to previous levee erosion analysis, which has primarily concerned the final effects of erosion, such as soil loss, depth of scour and breach width. This paper describes the construction of scaled-down physical models of levees composed of different homogeneous sands, as well as sand-clay mixtures, and their laboratory testing. A 3-D laser range scanner captured the surface features of the …

Inductive Inference Of Languages From Samplings, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber Oct 2010

Inductive Inference Of Languages From Samplings, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

We introduce, discuss, and study a model for inductive inference from samplings, formalizing an idea of learning different “projections” of languages. One set of our results addresses the problem of finding a uniform learner for all samplings of a language from a certain set when learners for particular samplings are available. Another set of results deals with extending learnability from a large natural set of samplings to larger sets. A number of open problems is formulated.

On Circulant And Two-Circulant Weighing Matrices, K. T. Arasu, I. S. Kotsireast, C. Koukouvinos, Jennifer Seberry

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We employ theoretical and computational techniques to construct new weighing matrices constructed from two circulants. In particular, we con- struct W (148, 144), W (152, 144), W (156, 144) which are listed as open in the second edition of the Handbook of Combinatorial Designs. We also fill a missing entry in Strassler’s table with answer “YES”, by constructing a circulant weighing matrix of order 142 with weight 100.

Flattening Single-Vertex Origami: The Non-Expansive Case, Gaiane Panina, Ileana Streinu Oct 2010

Flattening Single-Vertex Origami: The Non-Expansive Case, Gaiane Panina, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

A single-vertex origami is a piece of paper with straight-line rays called creases emanating from a fold vertex placed in its interior or on its boundary. The Single-Vertex Origami Flattening problem asks whether it is always possible to reconfigure the creased paper from any configuration compatible with the metric, to a flat, non-overlapping position, in such a way that the paper is not torn, stretched and, for rigid origami, not bent anywhere except along the given creases. Streinu and Whiteley showed how to reduce the problem to the carpenter's rule problem for spherical polygons. Using spherical expansive motions, they solved …

Nonlinear Control Of Facts Controllers For Damping Interarea Oscillations In Power Systems, Mahyar Zarghami, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper introduces a new nonlinear control of flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS) controllers for the purpose of damping interarea oscillations in power systems. FACTS controllers consist of series, shunt, or a combination of series-shunt devices which are interfaced with the bulk power system through injection buses. Controlling the angle of these buses can effectively damp low frequency interarea oscillations in the system. The proposed control method is based on finding an equivalent reduced affine nonlinear system for the network from which the dominant machines are extracted based on dynamic coherency. It is shown that if properly selected, measurements obtained …

A community of users who report bugs and request features provides valuable feedback that can be used in product development. We compare the community involvement in issue tracker usage between the open source project Eclipse and the closed source project IBM Jazz to evaluate if publicly accessible issue trackers work as well in closed source projects. We find that IBM Jazz successfully receives user feedback through this channel. We then explore the differences in work item processing in IBM Jazz between team members, project members and externals. We conclude that making public issue trackers available in closed source projects is …

Modeling 3d Facial Expressions Using Geometry Videos, Jiazhi Xia, Ying He, Dao T. P. Quynh, Xiaoming Chen, Steven C. H. Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The significant advances in developing high-speed shape acquisition devices make it possible to capture the moving and deforming objects at video speeds. However, due to its complicated nature, it is technically challenging to effectively model and store the captured motion data. In this paper, we present a set of algorithms to construct geometry videos for 3D facial expressions, including hole filling, geodesic-based face segmentation, and expression-invariant parametrization. Our algorithms are efficient and robust, and can guarantee the exact correspondence of the salient features (eyes, mouth and nose). Geometry video naturally bridges the 3D motion data and 2D video, and provides …

Organizations are using virtual communities to facilitate knowledge management and to enhance communication among employees, customers, and other interested individuals. Individual users can use virtual communities to engage in knowledge sharing. Professional communicators need to understand and adapt to a globalized and “flat” world, where people across different cultures interact freely and easily with one another in virtual communities. An intriguing question regarding virtual communities relates to whether national culture affects communication and types of knowledge sharing. This study examines the influence of US and Chinese national cultures on types of knowledge-sharing activities in virtual communities. The findings indicate that …

Finding Unusual Review Patterns Using Unexpected Rules, Nitin Jindal, Bing Liu, Ee Peng Lim Oct 2010

Finding Unusual Review Patterns Using Unexpected Rules, Nitin Jindal, Bing Liu, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In recent years, opinion mining attracted a great deal of research attention. However, limited work has been done on detecting opinion spam (or fake reviews). The problem is analogous to spam in Web search [1, 9 11]. However, review spam is harder to detect because it is very hard, if not impossible, to recognize fake reviews by manually reading them [2]. This paper deals with a restricted problem, i.e., identifying unusual review patterns which can represent suspicious behaviors of reviewers. We formulate the problem as finding unexpected rules. The technique is domain independent. Using the technique, we analyzed an Amazon.com …

Business Network-Based Value Creation In Electronic Commerce, Robert John Kauffman, Ting Li, Eric Van Heck

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Information technologies (IT) have affected economic activities within and beyond the boundaries of the firm, changing the face of e-commerce. This article explores the circumstances under which value is created in business networks made possible by IT. Business networks combine the capabilities of multiple firms to produce and deliver products and services that none of them could more economically produce on its own and for which there is demand in the market. We call this business network-based value creation. We apply economic theory to explain the conditions under which business networks will exist and are able to sustain their value-producing …

Mining Interesting Link Formation Rules In Social Networks, Cane Wing-Ki Leung, Ee Peng Lim, David Lo, Jianshu Weng Oct 2010

Mining Interesting Link Formation Rules In Social Networks, Cane Wing-Ki Leung, Ee Peng Lim, David Lo, Jianshu Weng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Link structures are important patterns one looks out for when modeling and analyzing social networks. In this paper, we propose the task of mining interesting Link Formation rules (LF-rules) containing link structures known as Link Formation patterns (LF-patterns). LF-patterns capture various dyadic and/or triadic structures among groups of nodes, while LF-rules capture the formation of a new link from a focal node to another node as a postcondition of existing connections between the two nodes. We devise a novel LF-rule mining algorithm, known as LFR-Miner, based on frequent subgraph mining for our task. In addition to using a support-confidence framework …

Jointly Modeling Aspects And Opinions With A Maxent-Lda Hybrid, Xin Zhao, Jing Jiang, Hongfei Yan, Xiaoming Li Oct 2010

Jointly Modeling Aspects And Opinions With A Maxent-Lda Hybrid, Xin Zhao, Jing Jiang, Hongfei Yan, Xiaoming Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Discovering and summarizing opinions from online reviews is an important and challenging task. A commonly-adopted framework generates structured review summaries with aspects and opinions. Recently topic models have been used to identify meaningful review aspects, but existing topic models do not identify aspect-specific opinion words. In this paper, we propose a MaxEnt-LDA hybrid model to jointly discover both aspects and aspect-specific opinion words. We show that with a relatively small amount of training data, our model can effectively identify aspect and opinion words simultaneously. We also demonstrate the domain adaptability of our model.

Electronic Image Stabilization Using Optical Flow With Inertial Fusion, Michael J. Smith, Alexander J. Boxerbaum, Gilbert L. Peterson, Roger D. Quinn

Faculty Publications

When a camera is affixed on a dynamic mobile robot, image stabilization is the first step towards more complex analysis on the video feed. This paper presents a novel electronic image stabilization (EIS) algorithm for highly dynamic mobile robotic platforms. The algorithm combines optical flow motion parameter estimation with angular rate data provided by a strapdown inertial measurement unit (IMU). A discrete Kalman filter in feedforward configuration is used for optimal fusion of the two data sources. Performance evaluations are conducted using a simulated video truth model (capturing the effects of image translation, rotation, blurring, and moving objects), and live …

A Virtual Infrastructure For Mitigating Typical Challenges In Sensor Networks, Hady S. Abdel Salam Oct 2010

A Virtual Infrastructure For Mitigating Typical Challenges In Sensor Networks, Hady S. Abdel Salam

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Sensor networks have their own distinguishing characteristics that set them apart from other types of networks. Typically, the sensors are deployed in large numbers and in random fashion and the resulting sensor network is expected to self-organize in support of the mission for which it was deployed. Because of the random deployment of sensors that are often scattered from an overflying aircraft, the resulting network is not easy to manage since the sensors do not know their location, do not know how to aggregate their sensory data and where and how to route the aggregated data. The limited energy budget …

Beyond Robot Fan-Out: Towards Multi-Operator Supervisory Control, Michael A. Goodrich, Yisong Guo, Jonathan M. Whetten Oct 2010

Beyond Robot Fan-Out: Towards Multi-Operator Supervisory Control, Michael A. Goodrich, Yisong Guo, Jonathan M. Whetten

Faculty Publications

This paper explores multi-operator supervisory control (MOSC) of multiple independent robots using two complementary approaches: a human factors experiment and an agent-based simulation. The experiment identifies two task and environment limitations on MOSC: task saturation and task diffusion. It also identifies the correlation between task specialization and performance, and the possible existence of untapped spare capacity that emerges when multiple operators coordinate. The presence of untapped spare capacity is explored using agent-based simulation, resulting in evidence which suggests that operators may be more effective when they operate at less than maximum capacity.

The design of two humanoid robots and an intuitive and flexible user interface for use by therapists in the treatment of children with autism are described.

Online Multiple Kernel Learning: Algorithms And Mistake Bounds, Rong Jin, Steven C. H. Hoi, Tianbao Yang Oct 2010

Online Multiple Kernel Learning: Algorithms And Mistake Bounds, Rong Jin, Steven C. H. Hoi, Tianbao Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online learning and kernel learning are two active research topics in machine learning. Although each of them has been studied extensively, there is a limited effort in addressing the intersecting research. In this paper, we introduce a new research problem, termed Online Multiple Kernel Learning (OMKL), that aims to learn a kernel based prediction function from a pool of predefined kernels in an online learning fashion. OMKL is generally more challenging than typical online learning because both the kernel classifiers and their linear combination weights must be learned simultaneously. In this work, we consider two setups for OMKL, i.e. combining …

Detecting Product Review Spammers Using Rating Behaviors, Ee Peng Lim, Viet-An Nguyen, Nitin Jindal, Bing Liu, Hady Wirawan Lauw Oct 2010

Detecting Product Review Spammers Using Rating Behaviors, Ee Peng Lim, Viet-An Nguyen, Nitin Jindal, Bing Liu, Hady Wirawan Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper aims to detect users generating spam reviews or review spammers. We identify several characteristic be- haviors of review spammers and model these behaviors so as to detect the spammers. In particular, we seek to model the following behaviors. First, spammers may target specific products or product groups in order to maximize their im- pact. Second, they tend to deviate from the other reviewers in their ratings of products. We propose scoring methods to measure the degree of spam for each reviewer and apply them on an Amazon review dataset. We then select a sub- set of highly suspicious …
