The amount of data produced in modern biological experiments such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) analysis far exceeds the processing capability of a single machine. The present state-of-the-art is taking the ”data to code”, the philosophy followed by many of the current service oriented workflow systems. However this is not feasible in some cases such as NMR data analysis, primarily due to the large scale of data.

The objective of this research is to bring ”code to data”, preferred in the cases when the data is extremely large. We present a DSL based approach to develop customized data intensive scientific …

The LOD cloud is gathering a lot of momentum, with the number of contributors growing manifold. Many prominent data providers have submitted and linked their data to other dataset with the help of manual mappings. The potential of the LOD cloud is enormous ranging from challenging AI issues such as open domain question answering to automated knowledge discovery. We believe that there is not enough technology support available to effectively query the LOD cloud. To this effect, we present a system called Linked Open Data SPARQL Querying System (LOQUS), which automatically maps users queries written in terms of a conceptual …

People are on the verge of an era in which the human experience can be enriched in ways they couldn't have imagined two decades ago. Rather than depending on a single technology, people progressed with several whose semantics-empowered convergence and integration will enable us to capture, understand, and reapply human knowledge and intellect. Such capabilities will consequently elevate our technological ability to deal with the abstractions, concepts, and actions that characterize human experiences. This will herald computing for human experience (CHE). The CHE vision is built on a suite of technologies that serves, assists, and cooperates with humans to nondestructively …

The Resource Description Framework (RDF) format is being used by a large number of scientific applications to store and disseminate their datasets. The provenance information, describing the source or lineage of the datasets, is playing an increasingly significant role in ensuring data quality, computing trust value of the datasets, and ranking query results. Current provenance tracking approaches using the RDF reification vocabulary suffer from a number of known issues, including lack of formal semantics, use of blank nodes, and application-dependent interpretation of reified RDF triples. In this paper, we introduce a new approach called Provenance Context Entity (PaCE) that uses …

Applying Cloud computing techniques for analyzing large data sets has shown promise in many data-driven scientific applications. Our approach presented here is to use Cloud computing for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)data analysis which normally consists of large amounts of data. Biologists often use third party or commercial software for ease of use. Enabling the capability to use this kind of software in a Cloud will be highly advantageous in many ways. Scripting languages especially designed for clouds may not have the flexibility biologists need for their purposes. Although this is true, they are familiar with special software packages that allow …

Practical Play Of The Dice Game Pig, Todd W. Neller, Clifton G.M. Presser Jan 2010

Practical Play Of The Dice Game Pig, Todd W. Neller, Clifton G.M. Presser

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The object of the jeopardy dice game Pig is to be the first player to reach 100 points. Each turn, a player repeatedly rolls a die until either a 1 is rolled or the player holds and scores the sum of the rolls (i.e., the turn total). At any time during a player’s turn, the player is faced with two choices: roll or hold. If the player rolls a 1, the player scores nothing and it becomes the opponent’s turn. If the player rolls a number other than 1, the number is added to the player’s turn total …

The Regis University Academic Research Network (ARNe) had network resources, such as VoIP, that required preservation their ability to receive near real-time forwarding treatment across the network. Quality of Service (QoS) design ideas were examined from four actual implementations described in research cases. Additionally, research involving surveys from Cisco certified professionals was examined, and Cisco technical literature was examined. Case study methodology, involving the study of multiple cases, was the primary tactic utilized in this research. Examination and triangulation of data from the research indicated that ARNe would benefit from moving forward with a basic QoS design and implementation, integrating …

Representation Invariant Genetic Operators, Jonathan E. Rowe, Michael D. Vose, Alden H. Wright Jan 2010

Representation Invariant Genetic Operators, Jonathan E. Rowe, Michael D. Vose, Alden H. Wright

Computer Science Faculty Publications

A genetic algorithm is invariant with respect to a set of representations if it runs the same no matter which of the representations is used. We formalize this concept mathematically, showing that the representations generate a group that acts upon the search space. Invariant genetic operators are those that commute with this group action. We then consider the problem of characterizing crossover and mutation operators that have such invariance properties. In the case where the corresponding group action acts transitively on the search space, we provide a complete characterization, including high-level representation-independent algorithms implementing these operators.

ISMIP HEINO was designed to explore internal largescale ice-sheet instabilities in different contemporary ice-sheet models. These instabilities are of interest because they are a possible cause of Heinrich events. A simplified geometry experiment reproduces the main characteristics of the Laurentide ice sheet, including the sedimented region over Hudson Bay and Hudson Strait. The model experiments include a standard run plus seven variations. Nine dynamic/thermodynamic ice-sheet models were investigated; one of these models contains a combination of the shallow-shelf (SSA) and shallow-ice approximation (SIA), …

Building An Oss Quality Estimation Model With Catreg, Athos Origin China, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Danny Ho

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Open Source Software (OSS) has been a popular form in software development. In this paper, we use statistical approaches to deriveOSSquality estimation models. Our objective is to build estimation models for the number of defects with metrics at project levels. First CATREG (Categorical regression with optimal scaling) is used to obtain quantifications of the qualitative variables. Then the independent variables are validated using the stepwise linear regression. The process is repeated to acquire optimal quantifications and final regression formula. This modeling process is performed based on data from theOSScommunities and is proved to be practically valuable.

The Effects Of Linguistic Features And Evaluation Perspective On Perceived Difficulty Of Medical Text, Gondy Leroy, Stephen Helmreich, James Cowie Jan 2010

The Effects Of Linguistic Features And Evaluation Perspective On Perceived Difficulty Of Medical Text, Gondy Leroy, Stephen Helmreich, James Cowie

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Millions of laypersons need more medical information than they are customarily provided during their doctor’s visit. Health websites can help fill this knowledge gap, but the text is believed to be too difficult to understand for many laypersons. To help write text that is not perceived as too difficult and leads to better comprehension (actual difficulty), we study how linguistic structures influence text difficulty. Since perceived difficulty has been shown to be a barrier to self-education, evaluating perceived difficulty is an essential first step to take. In this study, we evaluated the impact of noun phrase complexity and of function …

There is a growing need for a task analyses on robotic laparoscopic operations to understand better the tasks involved in robotic microsurgery cases. A few research groups have conducted task observations to help systems automatically identify surgeon skill based on task execution. Their gesture analyses, however, lacked depth and their class libraries were composed of ambiguous groupings of gestures that did not share contextual similarities.

A Hierarchical Task Analysis was performed on a four-throw suturing task using a robotic microsurgical platform. Three …

Data Clustering And Visualization Through Matrix Factorization, Yanhua Chen Jan 2010

Data Clustering And Visualization Through Matrix Factorization, Yanhua Chen

Wayne State University Dissertations

Clustering is traditionally an unsupervised task which is to find natural groupings or clusters in multidimensional data based on perceived similarities among the patterns. The purpose of clustering is to extract useful information

from unlabeled data.

In order to present the extracted useful knowledge obtained by clustering in a meaningful way, data visualization becomes a popular and growing area of research field. Visualization can provide a qualitative overview of large and complex data sets, which help us the desired insight in truly understanding the phenomena of interest in data.

The contribution of this dissertation is two-fold: Semi-Supervised Non-negative Matrix Factorization …

Interference-Aware Multipath Routing And Link Rate Control In Multihop Wireless Networks, Maggie X. Cheng, Xuan Gong

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In multihop wireless networks, end-to-end throughput is often hard to predict and is even harder to optimize due to the effect of interference. to date there is no precise result other than asymptotic bounds for this question: if there is no routing information given, what is the maximum throughput of a network using uncoordinated transmission such as IEEE 802.11 MAC? This paper attempts to address this question for a given network with specific traffic demand. in this paper we use a cross-layer design scheme to optimize network performance. the paper includes a basic linear programming model, from which the routing …

Approximate Instance Retrieval On Ontologies, Tuvshintur Tserendorj, Stephan Grimm, Pascal Hitzler Jan 2010

Approximate Instance Retrieval On Ontologies, Tuvshintur Tserendorj, Stephan Grimm, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

With the development of more expressive description logics (DLs) for the Web Ontology Language OWL the question arises how we can properly deal with the high computational complexity for efficient reasoning. In application cases that require scalable reasoning with expressive ontologies, non-standard reasoning solutions such as approximate reasoning are necessary to tackle the intractability of reasoning in expressive DLs. In this paper, we are concerned with the approximation of the reasoning task of instance retrieval on DL knowledge bases, trading correctness of retrieval results for gain of speed. We introduce our notion of an approximate concept extension and we provide …

Communication-Aware Load Balancing For Parallel Applications On Clusters, Xiao Qin, Hong Jiang, Adam Manzanares, Xiaojun Ruan, Shu Yin

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Cluster computing has emerged as a primary and cost-effective platform for running parallel applications, including communication-intensive applications that transfer a large amount of data among the nodes of a cluster via the interconnection network. Conventional load balancers have proven effective in increasing the utilization of CPU, memory, and disk I/O resources in a cluster. However, most of the existing load-balancing schemes ignore network resources, leaving an opportunity to improve the effective bandwidth of networks on clusters running parallel applications. For this reason, we propose a communication-aware load-balancing technique that is capable of improving the performance of communication-intensive applications by increasing …
