Life Sciences Faculty Research

Minimotif Miner (MnM) consists of a minimotif database and a web-based application that enables prediction of motif-based functions in user-supplied protein queries. We have revised MnM by expanding the database more than 10-fold to approximately 5000 motifs and standardized the motif function definitions. The web-application user interface has been redeveloped with new features including improved navigation, screencast-driven help, support for alias names and expanded SNP analysis. A sample analysis of prion shows how MnM 2 can be used.

Security Decay: An Entropic Approach To Definition And Understanding, Michael Coole, David J. Brooks Jan 2009

Security Decay: An Entropic Approach To Definition And Understanding, Michael Coole, David J. Brooks

Australian Security and Intelligence Conference

This article discusses the affect decay has within a systems approach used when implementing security strategies, in particular, the theory of defence in depth. Defence in depth is implemented within a risk management framework to reduce an organisation’s identified risks, which could lead to undesirable and unacceptable consequences. Defence in depth aims to link layered security elements into a system to ensure a holistic and functional security system, underpinned by the functions of; deter, detect, delay, response and recovery. For such a system to be commissioned and maintain its commissioning effectiveness, these functions must be performed in their sequential order …

The Influence Of Affect, Attitude And Usefulness In The Acceptance Of Telemedicine Systems, Soussan Djamasbi,, Ann L. Fruhling, Eleanor T. Loiacono

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

Grounded in current theories of affect this study examines the role positive and negative moods play on the acceptance of a specialized telemedicine system for microbiology consultation and diagnostics, referred to as telepathology. From a laboratory experiment using microbiology laboratory assistants, the notion that healthcare users’ attitude is an important factor in the acceptance behavior of a healthcare information system is supported. A regression analysis of the data revealed the need to tailor the IS Technology Acceptance Model for the healthcare field. Specifically, our results show that ease of use which is thought to be a main antecedent of end-user …

Energetic Path Finding Across Massive Terrain Data, Andrew Tsui, Zoë J. Wood Jan 2009

Energetic Path Finding Across Massive Terrain Data, Andrew Tsui, Zoë J. Wood

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Throughout history, the primary means of transportation for humans has been on foot. We present a software tool which can help visualize and predict where historical trails might lie through the use of a human-centered cost metric, with an emphasis on the ability to generate paths which traverse several thousand kilometers. To accomplish this, various graph simplification and path approximation algorithms are explored. We show that it is possible to restrict the search space for a path finding algorithm while not sacrificing accuracy. Combined with a multi-threaded variant of Dijkstra’s shortest path algorithm, we present a tool capable of computing …

The Lookup Technique To Replace Nested-If Formulas In Spreadsheet Programming, Thomas A. Grossman Jr., O Ozluk, J Gustavson Jan 2009

The Lookup Technique To Replace Nested-If Formulas In Spreadsheet Programming, Thomas A. Grossman Jr., O Ozluk, J Gustavson

Business Analytics and Information Systems

Spreadsheet programmers often implement contingent logic using a nested-IF formula even though this technique is difficult to test and audit and is believed to be risky. We interpret the programming of contingent logic in spreadsheets in the context of traditional computer programming. We investigate the “lookup technique” as an alternative to nested-IF formulas, describe its benefits for testing and auditing, and define its limitations. The lookup technique employs four distinct principles: 1) make logical tests visible; 2) make outcomes visible; 3) make logical structure visible; and 4) replace a multi-function nested-IF formula with a single-function lookup formula. It can be …

Persuading Consumers To Form Precise Search Engine Queries, Gondy Leroy Jan 2009

Persuading Consumers To Form Precise Search Engine Queries, Gondy Leroy

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Today’s search engines provide a single textbox for searching. This input method has not changed in decades and, as a result, consumer search behaviour has not changed either: few and imprecise keywords are used. Especially with health information, where incorrect information may lead to unwise decisions, it would be beneficial if consumers could search more precisely. We evaluated a new user interface that supports more precise searching by using query diagrams. In a controlled user study, using paper-based prototypes, we compared searching with a Google interface with drawing new or modifying template diagrams. We evaluated consumer willingness and ability to …

A Strategy For Reducing I/O And Improving Query Processing Time In An Oracle Data Warehouse Environment, Chris Titus Jan 2009

A Strategy For Reducing I/O And Improving Query Processing Time In An Oracle Data Warehouse Environment, Chris Titus

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

In the current information age as the saying goes, time is money. For the modern information worker, decisions must often be made quickly. Every extra minute spent waiting for critical data could mean the difference between financial gain and financial ruin. Despite the importance of timely data retrieval, many organizations lack even a basic strategy for improving the performance of their data warehouse based reporting systems. This project explores the idea that a strategy making use of three database performance improvement techniques can reduce I/O (input/output operations) and improve query processing time in an information system designed for reporting. To …

Archetype Alignment: A Two-Level Driven Semantic Matching Approach To Interoperability In The Clinical Domain, Damon Berry, Jesus Bisbal Jan 2009

Archetype Alignment: A Two-Level Driven Semantic Matching Approach To Interoperability In The Clinical Domain, Damon Berry, Jesus Bisbal

Conference Papers

Semantic interoperability between electronic health record systems and other information systems in the health domain implies agreement about the structure and the meaning of the information that is communicated. There are still a number of similar but different EHR system approaches. Some of the newer approaches adopt the two-layer model approach where a generic reference model is constrained by archetypes into valid clinical concepts which can be exchanged. The meaning of the concepts that are represented by an archetype can be conveyed by embedding codes from a commonly recognised terminology at appropriate points in the archetype. However, as the number …

Reinterpreting No Free Lunch, Jonathan E. Rowe, Michael D. Vose, Alden H. Wright Jan 2009

Reinterpreting No Free Lunch, Jonathan E. Rowe, Michael D. Vose, Alden H. Wright

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Since it’s inception, the “No Free Lunch theorem” has concerned the application of symmetry results rather than the symmetries themselves. In our view, the conflation of result and application obscures the simplicity, generality, and power of the symmetries involved. This paper separates result from application, focusing on and clarifying the nature of underlying symmetries. The result is a general set-theoretic version of NFL which speaks to symmetries when arbitrary domains and co-domains are involved. Although our framework is deterministic, we note situations where our deterministic set-theoretic results speak nevertheless to stochastic algorithms.

Open Source Trouble Ticket System, Steve Chapman Jan 2009

Open Source Trouble Ticket System, Steve Chapman

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The productivity of many organizations in the IT industry suffer greatly because most have yet to implement a process to manage and track IT issues from the time a problem is reported by the enduser to the time in which the problem is resolved. Until such a process exists, many organizations will find themselves unable to effectively manage time and resources thus resulting in unnecessary downtime, decrease in productivity and ultimately becoming an organization who "throw money at the problem" instead of fixing the root cause. One such solution would be to use a trouble ticket system application. There are …

Case Study: Implementing Tools For Software Quality Assurance, James Brennan Jan 2009

Case Study: Implementing Tools For Software Quality Assurance, James Brennan

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Test tools have become ubiquitous in the practice of Software Quality Assurance. Every year, many millions of dollars are spent on specialized software to help manage requirements, test cases, or defects—or to automate test execution. But, after purchasing the software, many companies fail to successfully implement the tools. Given the cost of most test software, it’s not surprising that companies often make a second attempt at using the tools. This thesis describes a second-chance effort to use a suite of tools to manage various aspects of the test process. It examines some of the goals driving the adoption of test …

Improving Effort Estimation By Voting Software Estimation Models, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Venus Marza Jan 2009

Improving Effort Estimation By Voting Software Estimation Models, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Venus Marza

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Estimating software development effort is an important task in the management of large software projects. The task is challenging, and it has been receiving the attentions of researchers ever since software was developed for commercial purpose. A number of estimation models exist for effort prediction. However, there is a need for novel models to obtain more accurate estimations. The primary purpose of this study is to propose a precise method of estimation by selecting the most popular models in order to improve accuracy. Consequently, the final results are very precise and reliable when they are applied to a real dataset …

The Macro-Structure Of Use Of Help, Oscar D. Andrade, David G. Novick, Nathaniel Bean Jan 2009

The Macro-Structure Of Use Of Help, Oscar D. Andrade, David G. Novick, Nathaniel Bean

Departmental Papers (CS)

Users of help systems often complain that they do not find them useful; while they still use help at least occasionally, they resort to other problem-solving strategies. In this paper, we analyze audiovisual recordings of people using a computer application, to identify (1) transition patterns among problem-solving approaches, and (2)the frequency of these transitions. Our analysis indicates that people switch frequently between consulting help and exploring the interface. Switching between problem-solving approaches appears to be an effective way of succeeding in tasks. Applications and their help systems can be better designed to support users who switch between help and non-help …

Prom: A Semantic Web Framework For Provenance Management In Science, Satya S. Sahoo, Roger Barga, Amit P. Sheth, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Pascal Hitzler Jan 2009

Prom: A Semantic Web Framework For Provenance Management In Science, Satya S. Sahoo, Roger Barga, Amit P. Sheth, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Pascal Hitzler

Kno.e.sis Publications

The eScience paradigm is enabling researchers to collaborate over the Web in virtual laboratories and conduct experiments on an industrial scale. But, the inherent variability in the quality and trust associated with eScience resources necessitates the use of provenance information describing the origin of an entity. Existing systems often model provenance using ambiguous terminology, have poor domain semantics and include modeling inconsistencies that hinders interoperability. Further, mere collection of provenance information is of little value without a well-defined and scalable query mechanism.

In this paper, we present 'PrOM', a framework that addresses both the modeling and querying issues in eScience …

Rules And Insights: Connecting The Mathematical And Linguistic Abilities Of C.S. Lewis, Kim Regnier Jongerius Jan 2009

Rules And Insights: Connecting The Mathematical And Linguistic Abilities Of C.S. Lewis, Kim Regnier Jongerius

ACMS Journal 2008-2009

While most biographical works on C.S. Lewis give passing reference to Lewis' problems with elementary mathematics, few have made an attempt at diagnosing the difficulty or exploring its impact on his writing. A careful study of family correspondence, however, makes it clear that his learning difficulties were not with mathematics alone and suggests connections between attitudes toward and abilities in both mathematics and language. This paper will make these connections clear and will illustrate their ties to Lewis' effective mathematical references.
