A New Construction Of Smooth Surfaces From Triangle Meshes Using Parametric Pseudo-Manifolds, Marcelo Siqueira, Dianna Xu, Jean Gallier, Luis Gustavo Nonato, Dimas Martinez Morera, Luiz Velho

Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

We introduce a new manifold-based construction for fitting a smooth surface to a triangle mesh of arbitrary topology. Our construction combines in novel ways most of the best features of previous constructions and, thus, it fills the gap left by them. We also introduce a theoretical framework that provides a sound justification for the correctness of our construction. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our manifold-based construction with a few concrete examples.

The Hidden Injuries Of Overloading 'Adt, Duane Buck, David J. Stucki Jan 2009

The Hidden Injuries Of Overloading 'Adt, Duane Buck, David J. Stucki

Mathematics Faculty Scholarship

The most commonly stated definition of abstract data type (ADT) is that it is a domain of values and the operations over that domain. So, for example, a language's built-in types, like int are seen to be ADTs. It is our opinion that a pure interpretation of this definition yields a semantics in which using an ADT is the same as using built-in types: the operations are side effect free and there is no concern over alias, shallow copy or synchronization problems. Unfortunately, the term abstract data type has over time been associated with at least three distinct meanings, and …

User-Generated Content On Social Media Challenges, Opportunities, Meenakshi Nagarajan

Kno.e.sis Publications

Understanding and exploiting user generated (textual) content (UGC) on social media is at the forefront of information management challenges today. The variety of UGC in detailed blog commentaries, collaborative wiki-content, online conversations, short messages in micro-blogs etc., are powering several personalization, monetization, crowd/business intelligence applications, and also providing an electronic microscope on social phenomena at an extraordinary scale. Certain characteristics of UGC however, necessitate key computational linguistic interventions before systems can tap into this data. A large portion of language found on social media is in the Informal English domain a blend of abbreviations, slang and context dependent terms delivered …

On The Computational Complexity Of The Reticulate Cophylogeny Reconstruction Problem, Ran Libeskind-Hadas, Michael A. Charleston Jan 2009

On The Computational Complexity Of The Reticulate Cophylogeny Reconstruction Problem, Ran Libeskind-Hadas, Michael A. Charleston

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

The cophylogeny reconstruction problem is that of finding minimal cost explanations of differences between evolutionary histories of ecologically linked groups of biological organisms. We present a proof that shows that the general problem of reconciling evolutionary histories is NP-complete and provide a sharp boundary where this intractability begins. We also show that a related problem, that of finding Pareto optimal solutions, is NP-hard. As a byproduct of our results, we give a framework by which meta-heuristics can be applied to find good solutions to this problem.

Analysis Of Privacy And Security Policies, Elisa Bertino, Carolyn Brodie, Seraphin Calo, Lorrie Faith Cranor, Clare Marie Karat, John Karat, Ninghui Li, Dan Lin, Jorge Lobo, Qun Ni, Prathima Rao, Xiping Wang

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The distributed nature of the environment in which privacy and security policies operate requires tools that help enforce consistency of policy rules across different domains. Furthermore, because changes to policy rules are required as policies evolve over time, such tools can be used by policy administrators to ensure the consistency of policy changes. in this paper, we describe a number of different policy analysis tools and techniques that we have developed over the years and present them in a unified framework in which both privacy and security policies are discussed. We cover dominance analyses of general policies, conflicts among authorizations …

VCU Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Jimmy Ghaphery, Head, Library Information Systems, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU); Thomas McNulty, Integrated Library Systems Librarian, VCU; Susan Teague-Rector, Web Applications Manager, VCU. We will analyze several weeks of search terms from February 2009 in order to determine how different points of entry impact user searches. Specifically we will compare user searches originating from a search tool on the library homepage and searches originating directly from Aleph. This session should be of interest to those who are involved with usability and OPAC design as well as system administrators tasked with measuring OPAC activity.

Heuristics For Improved Enterprise Intrusion Detection, James J. Treinen Jan 2009

Heuristics For Improved Enterprise Intrusion Detection, James J. Treinen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the greatest challenges facing network operators today is the identification of malicious activity on their networks. The current approach is to deploy a set of intrusion detection sensors (IDSs) in various locations throughout the network and on strategic hosts. Unfortunately, the available intrusion detection technologies generate an overwhelming volume of false alarms, making the task of identifying genuine attacks nearly impossible. This problem is very difficult to solve even in networks of nominal size. The task of uncovering attacks in enterprise class networks quickly becomes unmanageable.

Research on improving intrusion detection sensors is ongoing, but given the nature …

The up and coming industry that I will be reporting about here is the personal and home robotics industry. I will show how the development cycle in the United States functions. I will then answer the question: What are the main limits that hold back this industry? The U.S. approach to robotics will be contrasted with Japan’s approach as Japan has another very well developed robotics program.

The Theory Of Interval Probabilistic Logic Programs, Alex Dekhtyar, Michael I. Dekhtyar Jan 2009

The Theory Of Interval Probabilistic Logic Programs, Alex Dekhtyar, Michael I. Dekhtyar

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Two approaches to logic programming with probabilities emerged over time: Bayesian reasoning and probabilistic satisfiability (PSAT). The attractiveness of the former is in tying the logic programming research to the body of work on Bayes networks. The second approach ties, from the point of view of computation, reasoning about probabilities to linear programming, and allows for natural expression of imprecision in probabilities via the use of intervals. In this paper we construct precise semantics for one PSAT-based formalism for reasoning with interval probabilities: disjunctive probabilistic logic programs (dp-programs). It has two origins: (1) disjunctive logic programs, a powerful language for …

Collapsible Graphs And Reductions Of Line Graphs, Zhi-Hong Chen, Peter C.B. Lam, Wai-Chee Shiu Jan 2009

Collapsible Graphs And Reductions Of Line Graphs, Zhi-Hong Chen, Peter C.B. Lam, Wai-Chee Shiu

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

A graph G is collapsible if for every even subset X ⊆ V ( G ) , G has a subgraph such that G − E ( Γ ) is connected and the set of odd-degree vertices of Γ is X . A graph obtained by contracting all the non-trivial collapsible subgraphs of G is called the reduction of G . In this paper, we characterize graphs of diameter two in terms of collapsible subgraphs and investigate the relationship between the line graph of the reduction and the reduction of the line graph. Our results extend former results in [H.-J. …

Redirected Free Exploration With Distractors, Tabitha C. Peck Jan 2009

Redirected Free Exploration With Distractors, Tabitha C. Peck

Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports

Users in virtual environments often find navigation n1ore difficult than in the real world, Our new locomotion interface, Redirected Free Exploration with Distractors (RFED), enables users to walk in larger-than-tracked space VEs without predefined waypoints. RFED uses the concept of a distractor-an object, sound, or combination of object and sound in the VE that the user focuses on while the VE rotates, reducing perception of the rotation, and thus reducing the likelihood of a break in presence { 11 ]. We compared RFED to the current best interface, really walking, by conducting a user study 1neasuring navigational ability. Our results …
