A Modular Approach To Lung Nodule Detection From Computed Tomography Images Using Artificial Neural Networks And Content Based Image Representation, Omer Muhammet Soysal
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Lung cancer is one of the most lethal cancer types. Research in computer aided detection (CAD) and diagnosis for lung cancer aims at providing effective tools to assist physicians in cancer diagnosis and treatment to save lives. In this dissertation, we focus on developing a CAD framework for automated lung cancer nodule detection from 3D lung computed tomography (CT) images. Nodule detection is a challenging task that no machine intelligence can surpass human capability to date. In contrast, human recognition power is limited by vision capacity and may suffer from work overload and fatigue, whereas automated nodule detection systems can …

Greedy Methods For Approximate Graph Matching With Applications For Social Network Analysis, Partha Basuchowdhuri
Greedy Methods For Approximate Graph Matching With Applications For Social Network Analysis, Partha Basuchowdhuri
LSU Master's Theses
In this thesis, we study greedy algorithms for approximate sub-graph matching with attributed graphs. Such algorithms find one or multiple copies of a sub-graph pattern from a bigger data graph through approximate matching. One intended application of sub-graph matching method is in Social Network Analysis for detecting potential terrorist groups from known terrorist activity patterns. We propose a new method for approximate sub-graph matching which utilizes degree information to reduce the search space within the incremental greedy search framework. In addition, we have introduced the notion of a “seed” in incremental greedy method that aims to find a good initial …

Towards Solving Similarity Search Problems Using Fuzzy Concept For Multi-Dimensional Data, Yong Shi
Faculty Articles
In this paper, we present continuous research on data analysis based on our previous work on similarity search problems. PanKNN[13] is a novel technique which explores the meaning of K nearest neighbors from a new perspective, redefines the distances between data points and a given query point Q, and efficiently and effectively select data points which are closest to Q. It can be applied in various data mining fields. In this paper, we applied the Fuzzy concept to improve the performance of PanKNN, targeting the better decision making for the calculation of the distance between a data …
Satisfaction Assessment Of Textual Software Engineering Artifacts, Elizabeth Ashlee Holbrook
Satisfaction Assessment Of Textual Software Engineering Artifacts, Elizabeth Ashlee Holbrook
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
A large number of software projects exist and will continue to be developed that have textual requirements and textual design elements where the design elements should fully satisfy the requirements. Current techniques to assess the satisfaction of requirements by corresponding design elements are largely manual processes that lack formal criteria and standard practices. Software projects that require satisfaction assessment are often very large systems containing several hundred requirements and design elements. Often these projects are within a high assurance project domain, where human lives and millions of dollars of funding are at stake. Manual satisfaction assessment is expensive in terms …
Telecommunications Liberalisation In Africa: Proposed Regulatory Model For The Sadc Region, Z. N. Jobodwana
Telecommunications Liberalisation In Africa: Proposed Regulatory Model For The Sadc Region, Z. N. Jobodwana
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
The liberalisation of the telecommunication industry in Africa, and the further development of the region’s physical infrastructure was accompanied by the further development of Africa’s information, communication and technology infrastructure. Competition within the industry stimulated heavy economic investment in other sectors of the economy. The outcome of liberalisation also included the establishment of community-based structures that continue to enable communities to manage their own development and gain access to information and communication technologies (ICTs) in an unprecedented manner. The telecommunication infrastructure further stimulated the fast development of other related services, for example, ecommerce and mobile commerce (m-commerce), e-government, internet banking, …
Automated Offspring Sizing In Evolutionary Algorithms, André Chidi Nwamba
Automated Offspring Sizing In Evolutionary Algorithms, André Chidi Nwamba
Masters Theses
"Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) are a class of algorithms inspired by biological evolution. EAs are applicable to a wide range of problems; however, there are a number of parameters to set in order to use an EA. The performance of an EA is extremely sensitive to these parameter values; setting these parameters often requires expert knowledge of EAs. This prevents EAs from being more widely adopted by nonexperts. Parameter control, the automation of dynamic parameter value selection, has the potential to not only alleviate the burden of parameter tuning, but also to improve performance of EAs on a variety of problem …

Information Flow Properties For Cyber-Physical Systems, Rav Akella
Information Flow Properties For Cyber-Physical Systems, Rav Akella
Masters Theses
"In cyber-physical systems, which are the integrations of computational and physical processes, security properties are difficult to enforce. Fundamentally, physically observable behavior leads to violations of confidentiality. This work analyzes certain noninterference based security properties to ensure that interactions between the cyber and physical processes preserve confidentiality. A considerable barrier to this analysis is the representation of physical system interactions at the cyber-level. This thesis presents encoding of these physical system properties into a discrete event system and represents the cyber-physical system using Security Process Algebra (SPA). The model checker, Checker of Persistent Security (CoPS) shows Bisimulation based NonDeducibility on …

Self-Reported Cyber Crime: An Analysis On The Effects Of Anonymity And Pre-Employment Integrity, Ibrahim Baggili, Marcus Rogers
Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
A key issue facing today’s society is the increase in cyber crimes. Cyber crimes pose threats to nations, organizations and individuals across the globe. Much of the research in cyber crime has risen from computer science-centric programs, and little experimental research has been performed on the psychology of cyber crime. This has caused a knowledge gap in the study of cyber crime. To this end, this research focuses on understanding psychological concepts related to cyber crime. Through an experimental design, participants were randomly assigned to three groups with varying degrees of anonymity. After each treatment, participants were asked to self-report …

A spatial information system (SIS) is critical to the hosting, querying, and analyzing of spatial data sets. The increasing availability of three-dimensional (3D) data (e.g. from aerial and terrestrial laser scanning) and the desire to use such data in large geo-spatial platforms have been dual drivers in the evolution of integrated SISs. Within this context, recent patents demonstrate efforts to handle large data sets, especially complex point clouds. While the development of feature-rich geo-systems has been well documented, the implementation of support for 3D capabilities is only now being addressed. This paper documents the underlying technologies implemented for the support …

Intelligent Virtual Agent (IVA) systems are notoriously difficult to evaluate, particularly due to the subjectivity involved. From the various efforts to develop standard evaluation schemes for IVA systems the scheme proposed by Isbister & Doyle, which evaluates systems across five categories, seems particularly appropriate. To examine how these categories are being used, the evaluations presented in the proceedings of IVA '07 and IVA '08 are summarised and the extent to which the five categories in the Isbister & Doyle scheme are used is highlighted. Finally, to illustrate how the full scheme can be used, an evaluation of an IVA system …

Sampling With Confidence: Using K-Nn Confidence Measures In Active Learning, Rong Hu, Sarah Jane Delany, Brian Macnamee
Conference papers
Active learning is a process through which classifiers can be built from collections of unlabelled examples through the cooperation of a human oracle who can label a small number of examples selected as most informative. Typically the most informative examples are selected through uncertainty sampling based on classification scores. However, previous work has shown that, contrary to expectations, there is not a direct relationship between classification scores and classification confidence. Fortunately, there exists a collection of particularly effective techniques for building measures of classification confidence from the similarity information generated by k-NN classifiers. This paper investigates using these confidence measures …

An Investigation Into Student Reactions Towards Rad Versus Traditional Programming Environments For Novice Developers, Pansy Colkers
An Investigation Into Student Reactions Towards Rad Versus Traditional Programming Environments For Novice Developers, Pansy Colkers
Theses : Honours
The traditional approach to programming using text editors is widely used in many institutions to teach introductory programming. These types of traditional programming environments provide fundamental programming concepts for learning, especially in the context of novice developers. In recent years, teaching institutions have seen a trend towards the introduction of visual "drag-and-drop" rapid application development (RAD) environments for teaching novice programmers. These 'environments capture student interest in programming by allowing the construction of workable programs within a short time frame based on minimal pre-existing coding knowledge. However, some have argued that these visual RAD environments might not be suitable for …

A System For Incorporating Time-Based Event-Condition-Action Rules Into Business Databases, Christina Marie Steidle
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Human beings handle time-based events continuously; however the passage of time does not play an active part in most business systems because they are typically driven by interaction from human users or other systems. In order to take an action based upon the passage of time it is necessary to build a framework which will monitor the progression of time and a way to define what events the system should be waiting for. This thesis describes such a system, and shows that the system performs as specified. With this system business users are able to build event-condition-action rules using a …
Analysis Of Security Measures For Sequences, Ramakanth Kavuluru
Analysis Of Security Measures For Sequences, Ramakanth Kavuluru
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Stream ciphers are private key cryptosystems used for security in communication and data transmission systems. Because they are used to encrypt streams of data, it is necessary for stream ciphers to use primitives that are easy to implement and fast to operate. LFSRs and the recently invented FCSRs are two such primitives, which give rise to certain security measures for the cryptographic strength of sequences, which we refer to as complexity measures henceforth following the convention. The linear (resp. N-adic) complexity of a sequence is the length of the shortest LFSR (resp. FCSR) that can generate the sequence. Due …
Vectorpad: A Tool For Visualizing Vector Operations, Jared Bott
Vectorpad: A Tool For Visualizing Vector Operations, Jared Bott
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Visualization of three-dimensional vector operations can be very helpful in understanding vector mathematics. However, creating these visualizations using traditional WIMP interfaces can be a troublesome exercise. In this thesis, we present VectorPad, a pen-based application for three-dimensional vector mathematics visualization. VectorPad allows users to define vectors and perform mathematical operations upon them through the recognition of handwritten mathematics. The VectorPad user interface consists of a sketching area, where the user can write vector definitions and other mathematics, and a 3D graph for visualization. After recognition, vectors are visualized dynamically on the graph, which can be manipulated by the user. A …

This book for the first time introduces the notion of special set linear algebra and special set fuzzy linear algebra. This is an extension of the book set linear algebra and set fuzzy linear algebra. These algebraic structures basically exploit only the set theoretic property, hence in applications one can include a finite number of elements without affecting the systems property. These new structures are not only the most generalized structures but they can perform multi task simultaneously; hence they would be of immense use to computer scientists. This book has five chapters. In chapter one the basic concepts about …

Compartmentalized Approach To The Assembly Of Physical Maps, Serdar Bozdag, Timothy J. Close, Stefano Lonardi
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Background
Physical maps have been historically one of the cornerstones of genome sequencing and map-based cloning strategies. They also support marker assisted breeding and EST mapping. The problem of building a high quality physical map is computationally challenging due to unavoidable noise in the input fingerprint data.
Results
We propose a novel compartmentalized method for the assembly of high quality physical maps from fingerprinted clones. The knowledge of genetic markers enables us to group clones into clusters so that clones in the same cluster are more likely to overlap. For each cluster of clones, a local physical map is first …

Background
High density genetic maps of plants have, nearly without exception, made use of marker datasets containing missing or questionable genotype calls derived from a variety of genic and non-genic or anonymous markers, and been presented as a single linear order of genetic loci for each linkage group. The consequences of missing or erroneous data include falsely separated markers, expansion of cM distances and incorrect marker order. These imperfections are amplified in consensus maps and problematic when fine resolution is critical including comparative genome analyses and map-based cloning. Here we provide a new paradigm, a high-density consensus genetic map of …

The goal was to determine whether endogenous cytosolic NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) preferentially uses NADPH or NADH in intact pulmonary arterial endothelial cells in culture. The approach was to manipulate the redox status of the NADH/NAD+ and NADPH/NADP+ redox pairs in the cytosolic compartment using treatment conditions targeting glycolysis and the pentose phosphate pathway alone or with lactate, and to evaluate the impact on the intact cell NQO1 activity. Cells were treated with 2-deoxyglucose, iodoacetate, or epiandrosterone in the absence or presence of lactate, NQO1 activity was measured in intact cells using duroquinone as the electron acceptor, and …
Dendrites, Topological Graphs, And 2-Dominance, Paul Bankston
Dendrites, Topological Graphs, And 2-Dominance, Paul Bankston
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
For each positive ordinal α, the reflexive and transitive binary relation of α-dominance between compacta was first defined in our paper [Mapping properties of co-existentially closed continua, Houston J. Math., 31 (2005), 1047-1063] using the ultracopower construction. Here we consider the important special case α =2, and show that any Peano compactum 2-dominated by a dendrite is itself a dendrite (with the same being true for topological graphs and trees). We also characterize the topological graphs that 2-dominate arcs (resp., simple closed curves) as those that have cut points of order 2 (resp., those that are not trees).
Pressure Induced Phase Transformation Of Sno2: An Ab Initio Constant Pressure Study, Daniel Tesfai Yehdego
Pressure Induced Phase Transformation Of Sno2: An Ab Initio Constant Pressure Study, Daniel Tesfai Yehdego
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The behavior of SnO2 under rapid hydrostatic pressures is studied using constant-pressure ab initio simulations. The rutile-type SnO2 gradually transforms into the CaCl2-type structure at 15 GPa. At a pressure of about 20 GPa, a phase transformation into a cubic fluorite-type structure is observed. The orthorhombic Pnma cotunnite-structured phase is observed above 150 GPa. The mechanisms of these phase transformations at the atomistic level are discussed.
