Grid-based visualization portals help scientists explore data that is distributed across the globe and to visualize the data. Visualization allows scientists to explore data effectively and helps them to obtain further insights into the data. We developed a visualization grid portal whose main aim is to be able to store large data sets across machines in a cluster in a distributed fashion, and to allow users of the Grid Portal to visualize the data set effectively. This Grid portal uses HADOOP, a grid platform that facilitates flexible data storage in a distributed fashion, and supports distributed computation as well. The …

Code Obfuscation And Virus Detection, Ashwini Venkatesan Jan 2008

Code Obfuscation And Virus Detection, Ashwini Venkatesan

Master's Projects

Typically, computer viruses and other malware are detected by searching for a string of bits which is found in the virus or malware. Such a string can be viewed as a “fingerprint” of the virus. These “fingerprints” are not generally unique; however they can be used to make rapid malware scanning feasible. This fingerprint is often called a signature and the technique of detecting viruses using signatures is known as signaturebased detection [8]. Today, virus writers often camouflage their viruses by using code obfuscation techniques in an effort to defeat signature-based detection schemes. So-called metamorphic viruses are viruses in which …

Multi-Dimensional Partitioning In Buc For Data Cubes, Kenneth Yeung Jan 2008

Multi-Dimensional Partitioning In Buc For Data Cubes, Kenneth Yeung

Master's Projects

Bottom-Up Computation (BUC) is one of the most studied algorithms for data cube generation in on-line analytical processing. Its computation in the bottom-up style allows the algorithm to efficiently generate a data cube for memory-sized input data. When the entire input data cannot fit into memory, many literatures suggest partitioning the data by a dimension and run the algorithm on each of the single-dimensional partitioned data. For very large sized input data, the partitioned data might still not be able to fit into the memory and partitioning by additional dimensions is required; however, this multi- dimensional partitioning is more complicated …

Javafx As A Domain-Specific Language In Scala / Groovy, Sadiya Hameed Jan 2008

Javafx As A Domain-Specific Language In Scala / Groovy, Sadiya Hameed

Master's Projects

Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs) are optimized for developing applications in a particular domain. JavaFX is such a DSL for creating rich graphical user interfaces. One method to create a DSL is to implement it in an existing language. This offers the advantage that existing users of the language do not need to learn a new language to work in the DSL. Scala and Groovy are two upcoming Java based languages which boast a feature set that can be used to extend existing languages and facilitate DSL creation. In this project my goal was to evaluate the ability of Scala and Groovy to …

Authoring And Sharing Of Programming Exercises, Somyajit Jena Jan 2008

Authoring And Sharing Of Programming Exercises, Somyajit Jena

Master's Projects

In recent years, a number of exercises have been developed and published for educating students in the field of Computer Science. But these exercises exist in their own silos. There is no apparent mechanism to share these exercises among researchers and instructors in an effective and efficient manner. Moreover, the developers of these programming exercises are generally using a proprietary system for automatic submission and grading of these exercises. Each of these systems dictates the persistent format of an exercise that may not be inter-operable with other automatic submission and grading systems. This project provides a solution to this problem …

New Method For Approximating Vague Sets To Fuzzy Sets Based On Voting Model, Jian Liu, Zhizhan Liu, Shunxiang Wu, Yongjian Zhang Jan 2008

New Method For Approximating Vague Sets To Fuzzy Sets Based On Voting Model, Jian Liu, Zhizhan Liu, Shunxiang Wu, Yongjian Zhang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

By analyzing Vague Sets voting model, we bring forth a new method for approximating Vague Sets to Fuzzy Sets, and its general process is presented in the article. In a voting model, firstly, we suppose that the abstainers must vote for once more, and the results are close studied. Then the randomicity, uncertainty, and conformity of voting are found. As we know, an abstainer may favor somebody, oppose somebody, or just abstain. In this article, we suppose the distribution of results is consistent with a normal distribution. So, we advance the new approximation method based on Gauss Distribution. © 2008 …

Evolutionary Methodology For Optimization Of Image Transforms Subject To Quantization Noise, Michael Ray Peterson Jan 2008

Evolutionary Methodology For Optimization Of Image Transforms Subject To Quantization Noise, Michael Ray Peterson

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Lossy image compression algorithms sacrifice perfect imagereconstruction in favor of decreased storage requirements. Modelossy compression schemes, such as JPEG2000, rely upon the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to achieve high levels of compression while minimizing the loss of information for image reconstruction. Some compression applications require higher levels of compression than those achieved through application of the DWT and entropy coding. In such lossy systems, quantization provides high compression rates at the cost of increased distortion. Unfortunately, as the amount of quantization increases, the performance of the DWT for accurate image reconstruction deteriorates. Previous research demonstrates that a genetic algorithm can …

A Translation Mechanism For Recommendations, Pierpaolo Dondio, Luca Longo, Stephen Barrett Jan 2008

A Translation Mechanism For Recommendations, Pierpaolo Dondio, Luca Longo, Stephen Barrett

Conference papers

An important class of distributed Trust-based solutions is based on the information sharing. A basic requirement of such systems is the ability of participating agents to effectively communicate, receiving and sending messages that can be interpreted correctly. Unfortunately, in open systems it is not possible to postulate a common agreement about the representation of a rating, its semantic meaning and cognitive and computational mechanisms behind a trust-rating formation. Social scientists agree to consider unqualified trust values not transferable, but a more pragmatic approach would conclude that qualified trust judgments are worth being transferred as far as decisions taken considering others’ …

Fine-Grained Reputation-Based Routing In Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Alma Cemerlic Jan 2008

Fine-Grained Reputation-Based Routing In Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Alma Cemerlic

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Ad hoc networks are very helpful in situations when no fixed network infrastructure is available. They are especially important in emergency situations such as natural disasters and military conflicts. Most developed wireless ad hoc routing protocols are designed to discover and maintain an active path from source to destination with an assumption that every node is friendly and cooperative. However, it is possible that the participating nodes are selfish or malicious. A mechanism to evaluate reputation for each node is essential for the reliability and security of routing protocol in ad hoc networks. We propose a fine-grained reputation system for …

Evaluation Of An Image Processing Algorithm For Scene Change Detection, Daniel Flores

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Despite the efforts to reduce traffic accidents by government entities and automobile manufactures, the numbers of accidents are not considerably reduced. An evaluation of an algorithm based on the fly's eye is done on this research applying its principles to detect scene change on images for printed circuit boards providing initial steps to implement this algorithm on vehicular traffic to keep track of objects moving on the field for collision avoidance purposes. The effectiveness of the algorithm is addressed through a comparison of its performance with that found in experimental data.

Remote Forensics May Bring The Next Sea Change In E-Discovery: Are All Networked Computers Now Readily Accessible Under The Revised Federal Rules Of Civil Procedure?, Joseph J. Schwerha, Scott Inch Jan 2008

Remote Forensics May Bring The Next Sea Change In E-Discovery: Are All Networked Computers Now Readily Accessible Under The Revised Federal Rules Of Civil Procedure?, Joseph J. Schwerha, Scott Inch

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The recent amendments to Rule 26 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure created a two-tiered approach to discovery of electronically stored information (“ESI”). Responding parties must produce ESI that is relevant, not subject to privilege, and reasonably accessible. However, because some methods of storing ESI, such as on magnetic backup tapes and within enormous databases, require substantial cost to access and search their contents, the rules permit parties to designate those repositories as “not reasonably accessible” because of undue burden or cost. But even despite the difficulty in searching for ESI, the party’s duty to preserve potentially responsive evidence …

A Framework To Support Spatial, Temporal And Thematic Analytics Over Semantic Web Data, Matthew Steven Perry Jan 2008

A Framework To Support Spatial, Temporal And Thematic Analytics Over Semantic Web Data, Matthew Steven Perry

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Spatial and temporal data are critical components in many applications. This is especially true in analytical applications ranging from scientific discovery to national security and criminal investigation. The analytical process often requires uncovering and analyzing complex thematic relationships between disparate people, places and events. Fundamentally new query operators based on the graph structure of Semantic Web data models, such as semantic associations, are proving useful for this purpose. However, these analysis mechanisms are primarily intended for thematic relationships. This dissertation proposes a framework built around the RDF data model for analysis of thematic, spatial and temporal relationships between named entities. …

Algorithmic Techniques Employed In The Isolation Of Codon Usage Biases In Prokaryotic Genomes, Douglas W. Raiford Iii Jan 2008

Algorithmic Techniques Employed In The Isolation Of Codon Usage Biases In Prokaryotic Genomes, Douglas W. Raiford Iii

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

While genomic sequencing projects are an abundant source of information for biological studies ranging from the molecular to the ecological in scale, much of the information present may yet be hidden from casual analysis. One such information domain, trends in codon usage, can provide a wealth of information about an organism's genes and their expression. Degeneracy in the genetic code allows more than one triplet codon to code for the same amino acid, and usage of these codons is often biased such that one or more of these synonymous codons is preferred. Isolation of translational efficiency bias can have important …

Energy Efficient Image Video Sensor Networks, Paul Anthony Bender Jan 2008

Energy Efficient Image Video Sensor Networks, Paul Anthony Bender

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Image Video Sensor Networks are emerging applications for sensor network technologies. The relatively large size of the data collected by image video sensors presents new challenges for the sensor network in terms of energy consumption and channel capacity. We address each of these issues through the use of a high density network deployment utilizing some nodes as dedicated relay nodes.

A high density network allows network nodes to reduce their transmission power. This reduction in transmission power allows each node to conserve power and simultaneously increases the potential for spatially concurrent transmissions within the network, resulting in improved network throughputs. …

Object Similarity Through Correlated Third-Party Objects, Ting Sa Jan 2008

Object Similarity Through Correlated Third-Party Objects, Ting Sa

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Given a pair of objects, it is of interest to know how they are related to each other and the strength of their similarity. Many previous studies focused on two types of similarity measures: The first type is based on closeness of attribute values of two given objects, and the second type is based on how often the two objects co-occur in transactions/tuples.

In this thesis we study a new behavior-based similarity measure, which evaluates similarity between two objects by considering how similar their correlated third-party object sets are. Behavior-based similarity can help us find pairs of objects that have …

Software engineers have been trying for years to develop a software synthesis system that can transform a formal specification model to a design model from which executable code can be generated. AFIT wide spectrum object modeling environment (AWESOME) is one result of their research. AWESOME presents a formal model as an abstract syntax tree. This model consists mainly of object class specifications. The methods in these classes are specified using pre and post-conditions. The intent of this thesis is to support the transformation of post-conditions to code statements. A post-condition is first categorized as dependent or independent relative to other …

Subcoid: An Attempt To Explore Cluster-Outlier Iterative Detection Approach To Multi-Dimensional Data Analysis In Subspace, Yong Shi

Faculty Articles

Many data mining algorithms focus on clustering methods. There are also a lot of approaches designed for outlier detection. We observe that, in many situations, clusters and outliers are concepts whose meanings are inseparable to each other, especially for those data sets with noise. Clusters and outliers should be treated as the concepts of the same importance in data analysis. In our previous work [22] we proposed a cluster-outlier iterative detection algorithm in full data space. However, in high dimensional spaces, for a given cluster or outlier, not all dimensions may be relevant to it. In this paper we extend …

Detecting Clusters And Outliers For Multi-Dimensional Data, Yong Shi

Faculty Articles

Nowadays many data mining algorithms focus on clustering methods. There are also a lot of approaches designed for outlier detection. We observe that, in many situations, clusters and outliers are concepts whose meanings are inseparable to each other, especially for those data sets with noise. Thus, it is necessary to treat clusters and outliers as concepts of the same importance in data analysis. In this paper, we present a cluster-outlieriterative detection algorithm, tending to detect the clusters and outliers in another perspective for noisy data sets. In this algorithm, clusters are detected and adjusted according to the intra-relationship within clusters …

Fuzzyshrinking: Improving Shrinking-Based Data Mining Algorithms Using Fuzzy Concept For Multi-Dimensional Data, Yong Shi

Faculty Articles

In this paper, we present continuous research on data analysis based on our previous work on the shrinking approach. Shrinking[19] is a novel data preprocessing technique which optimizes the inner structure of data inspired by the Newton's Universal Law of Gravitation[16]in the real world. It can be applied in many data mining fields. In this approach data are moved along the direction of the density gradient, thus making the inner structure of data more prominent. It is conducted on a sequence of grids with different cell sizes. In this paper, we applied the Fuzzy concept to improve the performance …

Expanding The Database Curriculum, Meg Murray, Mario Guimaraes Jan 2008

Expanding The Database Curriculum, Meg Murray, Mario Guimaraes

Faculty Articles

As database concepts and technologies continue to evolve there exists a need to expand the topics included in database curricula. This is challenging given the restraints on the number of courses that can be included in a typical CS or IS program. While a set of commonly identified core concepts and principles exists, there is little consensus on what supplemental materials should be included in database courses. Through an NSF proof-of-concept grant, we designed and developed courseware incorporating the use of animations to deepen and enrich standard presentations of core database concepts and to complement database teachings as found in …

The Oil Drilling Model And Iterative Deepening Genetic Annealing Algorithm For The Traveling Salesman Problem, Hoong Chuin Lau, Fei Xiao Jan 2008

The Oil Drilling Model And Iterative Deepening Genetic Annealing Algorithm For The Traveling Salesman Problem, Hoong Chuin Lau, Fei Xiao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this work, we liken the solving of combinatorial optimization problems under a prescribed computational budget as hunting for oil in an unexplored ground. Using this generic model, we instantiate an iterative deepening genetic annealing (IDGA) algorithm, which is a variant of memetic algorithms. Computational results on the traveling salesman problem show that IDGA is more effective than standard genetic algorithms or simulated annealing algorithms or a straightforward hybrid of them. Our model is readily applicable to solve other combinatorial optimization problems.

Multi-Echelon Repairable Item Inventory System With Limited Repair Capacity Under Nonstationary Demands, Hoong Chuin Lau, Huawei Song Jan 2008

Multi-Echelon Repairable Item Inventory System With Limited Repair Capacity Under Nonstationary Demands, Hoong Chuin Lau, Huawei Song

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Classical multi-echelon repairable item inventory models are based either on steady-state analysis or infinite repair capacity, which may not work well in situations when the demand is nonstationary, or repair capacity is limited. In this paper, we propose an analytical model for evaluating system performance that works well under limited repair capacity and nonstationary demands. Following the METRIC methodology, we then develop an optimisation algorithm to solve the corrective maintenance problem in military logistics. Experimental results show that our approach yields good solutions efficiently. This work has also resulted in a software that has been field-tested by a military organisation.

A Seeded Genetic Algorithm For Rna Secondary Structural Prediction With Pseudoknots, Ryan Pham Jan 2008

A Seeded Genetic Algorithm For Rna Secondary Structural Prediction With Pseudoknots, Ryan Pham

Master's Projects

This work explores a new approach in using genetic algorithm to predict RNA secondary structures with pseudoknots. Since only a small portion of most RNA structures is comprised of pseudoknots, the majority of structural elements from an optimal pseudoknot-free structure are likely to be part of the true structure. Thus seeding the genetic algorithm with optimal pseudoknot-free structures will more likely lead it to the true structure than a randomly generated population. The genetic algorithm uses the known energy models with an additional augmentation to allow complex pseudoknots. The nearest-neighbor energy model is used in conjunction with Turner’s thermodynamic parameters …

According to Government Computer News (GCN) web attacks have been marked as all- time high this year. GCN says that some of the leading security software like SOPHOS detected about 15,000 newly infected web pages daily in initial three months of 2008 [13]. This has lead to the need of efficient software to make web applications robust and sustainable to these attacks. While finding information on different types of attacks, I found that SQL injection and cross site scripting are the most famous among attackers. These attacks are used extensively since, they can be performed using different techniques and it …
