A Distributed Ai Approach For Large-Scale Wlan Design, Alan Mcgibney Jan 2008

A Distributed Ai Approach For Large-Scale Wlan Design, Alan Mcgibney

Theses

The recent dramatic trend towards always-on-connectivity has driven the need for mobile ubiquitous computing environments with the advent of the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) seeing a shift from traditional wired networks to wireless networking. A WLAN typically contains a number of access points that allow wireless enabled clients access information and network resources such as the internet without the need for wires, offering flexibility and mobility to the users. Initial wireless networks were convenience based allowing users access to the primary wired network, and involved little planning prior to roll-out. The proliferation of low cost wireless devices combined wdth …

Phase-Shifting Haar Wavelets For Image-Based Rendering Applications, Mais Alnasser Jan 2008

Phase-Shifting Haar Wavelets For Image-Based Rendering Applications, Mais Alnasser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we establish the underlying research background necessary for tackling the problem of phase-shifting in the wavelet transform domain. Solving this problem is the key to reducing the redundancy and huge storage requirement in Image-Based Rendering (IBR) applications, which utilize wavelets. Image-based methods for rendering of dynamic glossy objects do not truly scale to all possible frequencies and high sampling rates without trading storage, glossiness, or computational time, while varying both lighting and viewpoint. This is due to the fact that current approaches are limited to precomputed radiance transfer (PRT), which is prohibitively expensive in terms of memory …

Visual Language Representation For Use Case Evolution And Traceability, Coretta Willis Douglas

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The primary goal of this research is to assist non-technical stakeholders involved in requirements engineering with a comprehensible method for managing changing requirements within a specific domain. An important part of managing evolving requirements over time is to maintain a temporal ordering of the changes and to support traceability of the modifications. This research defines a semi-formal syntactical and semantic definition of such a method using a visual language, RE/TRAC (Requirements Evolution with Traceability), and a supporting formal semantic notation RE/TRAC-SEM. RE/TRAC-SEM is an ontological specification employing a combination of models, including verbal definitions, set theory and a string language …

A Novel Automated Approach Of Multi-Modality Retinal Image Registration And Fusion, Hua Cao Jan 2008

A Novel Automated Approach Of Multi-Modality Retinal Image Registration And Fusion, Hua Cao

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Biomedical image registration and fusion are usually scene dependent, and require intensive computational effort. A novel automated approach of feature-based control point detection and area-based registration and fusion of retinal images has been successfully designed and developed. The new algorithm, which is reliable and time-efficient, has an automatic adaptation from frame to frame with few tunable threshold parameters. The reference and the to-be-registered images are from two different modalities, i.e. angiogram grayscale images and fundus color images. The relative study of retinal images enhances the information on the fundus image by superimposing information contained in the angiogram image. Through the …

Association-Based Image Retrieval For Automatic Target Recognition., Arun D. Kulkarni, H. Gunturu, S. Dalta

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Model-based automatic target recognition (ATR)systems deal with recognizing three dimensional objects from two dimensional images. In order to recognizeand identify objects the ATRsystem must have one or more stored models. Multiple two dimensional views of each three dimensional objectthat may appear in the universe it deals withare stored in the database. During recognition, two dimensional view of atarget object is used a query image and the search is carried out to identify the corresponding three dimensional object. Stages of a model-based ATR system include preprocessing, segmentation, feature extraction, and searching thedatabase. One of the most important problems in a model-based …

Set Linear Algebra And Set Fuzzy Linear Algebra, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, K. Ilanthenral Jan 2008

Set Linear Algebra And Set Fuzzy Linear Algebra, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, K. Ilanthenral

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book, the authors define the new notion of set vector spaces which is the most generalized form of vector spaces. Set vector spaces make use of the least number of algebraic operations, therefore, even a non-mathematician is comfortable working with it. It is with the passage of time, that we can think of set linear algebras as a paradigm shift from linear algebras. Here, the authors have also given the fuzzy parallels of these new classes of set linear algebras. This book abounds with examples to enable the reader to understand these new concepts easily. Laborious theorems and …

Pathos: Pervasive At Home Sleep Monitoring, Ian Obermiller, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed Jan 2008

Pathos: Pervasive At Home Sleep Monitoring, Ian Obermiller, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Sleeping disorders affect a large percentage of the population, and many of them go undiagnosed each year because the method of diagnosis is to stay overnight at a sleep center. Because pervasive technologies have become so prevalent and affordable, sleep monitoring is no longer confined to a permanent installation, and can therefore be brought directly into the user home. We present a unique solution to the problem of home sleep monitoring that has the possibility to take the place of and expand on the data from a sleep center. PATHOS focuses not only on analyzing patterns during the night, but …

Characterization Of Digraphs With Equal Domination Graphs And Underlying Graphs, Kim A. S. Factor, Larry J. Langley Jan 2008

Characterization Of Digraphs With Equal Domination Graphs And Underlying Graphs, Kim A. S. Factor, Larry J. Langley

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

A domination graph of a digraph D , dom(D)dom(D), is created using the vertex set of D and edge {u,v}∈E[dom(D)]{u,v}∈E[dom(D)] whenever (u,z)∈A(D)(u,z)∈A(D) or (v,z)∈A(D)(v,z)∈A(D) for every other vertex z∈V(D)z∈V(D). The underlying graph of a digraph DD, UG(D)UG(D), is the graph for which D is a biorientation. We completely characterize digraphs whose underlying graphs are identical to their domination graphs, UG(D)=dom(D)UG(D)=dom(D). The maximum and minimum number of single arcs in these digraphs, and their characteristics, is given.

Empirical Bayes And Hierarchical Bayes Estimation Of Skew Normal Populations, Naveen K. Bansal, Mehdi Maadooliat, Xiaowei Wang

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

We develop empirical and hierarchical Bayesian methodologies for the skew normal populations through the EM algorithm and the Gibbs sampler. A general concept of skewness to the normal distribution is considered throughout. Motivations are given for considering the skew normal population in applications, and an example is presented to demonstrate why the skew normal distribution is more applicable than the normal distribution for certain applications.

Heuristic Health Resource Referral (H2r2) Engine, Duy Vo Jan 2008

Heuristic Health Resource Referral (H2r2) Engine, Duy Vo

Master's Projects

Searching for health resources is difficult for many individuals because it requires domain knowledge and understanding of search engines techniques. Our system proposes a paradigm shift whereby users provide as much or as little information as they feel comfortable, and we endeavor to match them with relevant health resources. The system first attempts to identify risk factors through a heuristic engine that employs fuzzy logic and then searches for health resources based on the user’s profile. We aim to unburden the user from having to understand complex health information and sometimes esoteric search techniques. Our preliminary findings show that a …

Investigating The Effectiveness Of Active Interaction Tools On Student Learning, Lurie Andrei Jan 2008

Investigating The Effectiveness Of Active Interaction Tools On Student Learning, Lurie Andrei

Master's Projects

In this project, we investigate the effectiveness of active interaction animation tools for learning. We limit our scope to a particular computer science course that teaches graph algorithms on an undergraduate level. More specifically, we evaluate student understanding of basic graph algorithms when two kinds of interactive animation tools are used by the students to learn the algorithms: active interaction and passive interaction. We hypothesize that animations which engage students in active interaction are more effective and more beneficial to learning and comprehension than the animations which do not explicitly engage students in active interaction. We conduct an experiment and …

Towards An Undetectable Computer Virus, Priti Desai Jan 2008

Towards An Undetectable Computer Virus, Priti Desai

Master's Projects

Metamorphic viruses modify their own code to produce viral copies which are syntactically different from their parents. The viral copies have the same functionality as the parent but may have different signatures. This makes signature-based virus scanners unreliable for detecting metamorphic viruses. But statistical pattern analysis tool such as Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) can detect metamorphic viruses. Virus writers use many different code obfuscation techniques to generate metamorphic viruses. In this project we develop a metamorphic engine using code obfuscation techniques. Our metamorphic engine is designed to produce highly diverse morphed copies of the base virus. We show that commercial …

Study Of Tcp Issues Over Wireless And Implementation Of Iscsi Over Wireless For Storage Area Networks, Rahul Sharma Jan 2008

Study Of Tcp Issues Over Wireless And Implementation Of Iscsi Over Wireless For Storage Area Networks, Rahul Sharma

Master's Projects

The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) has proved to be proficient in classical wired networks, presenting an ability to acclimatize to modern, high-speed networks and present new scenarios for which it was not formerly designed. Wireless access to the Internet requires that information reliability be reserved while data is transmitted over the radio channel. Automatic repeat request (ARQ) schemes and TCP techniques are often used for error-control at the link layer and at the transport layer, respectively. TCP/IP is becoming a communication standard [1]. Initially it was designed to present reliable transmission over IP protocol operating principally in wired networks. Wireless …

Practical Detection Of Metamorphic Computer Viruses, Sharmidha Govindaraj Jan 2008

Practical Detection Of Metamorphic Computer Viruses, Sharmidha Govindaraj

Master's Projects

Metamorphic virus employs code obfuscation techniques to mutate itself. It absconds from signature-based detection system by modifying internal structure without compromising original functionality. However, it has been proved that machine learning technique like Hidden Markov model (HMM) can detect such viruses with high probability. HMM is a state machine where each state observes the input data with appropriate observation probability. HMM learns statistical properties of “virus features” rather than “signatures” and relies on such statistics to detect same family virus. Each HMM is trained with variants of same family viruses that are generated by same metamorphic engine so that HMM …

Algorithm To Obtain Total Order From Partial Orders For Social Networks, Chandrika Satyavolu Jan 2008

Algorithm To Obtain Total Order From Partial Orders For Social Networks, Chandrika Satyavolu

Master's Projects

We developed an algorithm for generating total orders from partial orders based on a variant of QuickSort. We also constructed a website: 100 best movies! that would generate and display the total order of the best 100 movies from partial orders that are humanly ordered and stored in a database. The users of the website can add new movies of different categories to the database. The users can also generate partial rankings within specific categories. The total order of 100 best movies! would be calculated from the humanly computed partial orders stored in the database.
