We present a novel, semi-supervised approach to training discriminative random fields (DRFs) that efficiently exploits labeled and unlabeled training data to achieve improved accuracy in a variety of image processing tasks. We formulate DRF training as a form of MAP estimation that combines conditional loglikelihood on labeled data, given a data-dependent prior, with a conditional entropy regularizer defined on unlabeled data. Although the training objective is no longer concave, we develop an efficient local optimization procedure that produces classifiers that are more accurate than ones based on standard supervised DRF training. We then apply our semi-supervised approach to train DRFs …
Using Hybrid Approaches To Solve The Challenges Of Shape From Shading, Ryan Murphy, Zoë J. Wood
Using Hybrid Approaches To Solve The Challenges Of Shape From Shading, Ryan Murphy, Zoë J. Wood
Computer Science and Software Engineering
For over thirty years researchers have been trying to solve the shape from shading problem of determining 3D shape from a single image with a single light source. The basic problem of determining shape from shading is made more difficult due to challenges of light orientation, camera type, ambiguity, multiple materials, and specular highlights. This paper shows how some of these challenges can be overcome through the use of other techniques such as image segmentation and stereopsis. We present a new hybrid method of shape from shading that can be used to autonomously capture 3D information from two 2D images …
Enabling P2p Cooperative Wms Proxy Caching And Prefetching In An Educational Environment, Jeffrey A. Bergamini, Michael Haungs
Enabling P2p Cooperative Wms Proxy Caching And Prefetching In An Educational Environment, Jeffrey A. Bergamini, Michael Haungs
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Given the great demand and promise for educational use of GIS, real time access to massive remote geospatial datasets for pedagogical purposes would be immensely useful to educators and students. However, such access has remained elusive. In other work, we have demonstrated that a P2P distributed system of client-side proxies can address the challenges posed by the interactive, multiplicative, and exploratory nature of classroom GIS, and we described this system at a high level. In this paper, we present the details of several novel techniques that enable P2P cooperative caching and prefetching of OGC WMS data in an educational lab …
Source Code Protection For Applications Written In Microsoft Excel And Google Spreadsheet, Thomas A. Grossman Jr.
Source Code Protection For Applications Written In Microsoft Excel And Google Spreadsheet, Thomas A. Grossman Jr.
Business Analytics and Information Systems
Spreadsheets are used to develop application software that is distributed to users. Unfortunately, the users often have the ability to change the programming statements (“source code”) of the spreadsheet application. This causes a host of problems. By critically examining the suitability of spreadsheet computer programming languages for application development, six “application development features” are identified, with source code protection being the most important. We investigate the status of these features and discuss how they might be implemented in the dominant Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and in the new Google Spreadsheet. Although Google Spreadsheet currently provides no source code control, its web-centric …

Contracts Database: Part Of The Solution, Michael J. Caprioli
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This document reviews the results of the implementation and aftermath of the Contracts Database, a 3 tier system using Java technology. Executive management at Intercontinental Research Foundation (IRF) decided to create a line of web applications for the research analysts to use as tools and create some consistency in the business process. The Contracts Database would be the first product in this initiative. This application would serve as an online database to be incorporated into the research analyst's daily routine. This document demonstrates the successful development of a web application and the potential pitfalls of trying to change business methodology.
Network Access Control: Disruptive Technology?, Craig Fisher
Network Access Control: Disruptive Technology?, Craig Fisher
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Network Access Control (NAC) implements policy-based access control to the trusted network. It regulates entry to the network by the use of health verifiers and policy control points to mitigate the introduction of malicious software. However the current versions of NAC may not be the universal remedy to endpoint security that many vendors tout. Many organizations that are evaluating the technology, but that have not yet deployed a solution, believe that NAC presents an opportunity for severe disruption of their networks. A cursory examination of the technologies used and how they are deployed in the network appears to support this …
Predicting Crime Reporting With Decision Trees And The National Crime Victimization Survey, Gondy Leroy, Juliette Gutierrez '13
Predicting Crime Reporting With Decision Trees And The National Crime Victimization Survey, Gondy Leroy, Juliette Gutierrez '13
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
Crime reports are used by law enforcement to find criminals, prevent further violations, identify problems causing crimes and allocate government resources. Unfortunately, many crimes go unreported. This may lead to an incorrect crime picture and suboptimal responses to the existing situation. Our goal is to use a data mining approach to increase understanding of when crime is reported or not. An increased understanding could lead to new, more effective programs to fight crime or changes to existing programs. We use the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) which comprises data collected from 45,000 households about incidents, victims, suspects and if the …
Beyond Sawsdl - A Game Plan For Broader Adoption Of Semantic Web Services, Amit P. Sheth
Beyond Sawsdl - A Game Plan For Broader Adoption Of Semantic Web Services, Amit P. Sheth
Kno.e.sis Publications
After a flurry of research activities led by the OWL-S, WSMO, SWSF, and WSDL-S groups, we now have taken the first concrete steps toward building a Semantic Web Services (SWS) based solution, in the form of a W3C candidate recommendation SAWSDL [http://www.w3.org/2002/ws/sawsdl/], associated tools and use cases, and initial applications [1]. Where do we go from here? Researchers among us may be fully convinced of the importance and benefit of adding semantics to Web services and impatient to see their research translated into technologies and adapted for real use. However, I believe we may need to be patient and do …

A Unified Approach To Retrieving Web Documents And Semantic Web Data, Trivikram Immaneni, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan
Kno.e.sis Publications
The Semantic Web seems to be evolving into a property-linked web of RDF data, conceptually divorced from (but physically housed in) the hyperlinked web of HTML documents. We discuss the Unified Web model that integrates the two webs and formalizes the structure and the semantics of interconnections between them. We also discuss the Hybrid Query Language which combines the Data and Information Retrieval techniques to provide a convenient and uniform way to retrieve data and documents from the Unified Web. We present the retrieval system SITAR and some preliminary results.

Creating A Software Assembly Line, Gary Allan Howard
Creating A Software Assembly Line, Gary Allan Howard
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This thesis describes a technical solution that improved the software development efforts needed to verify and validate a medical device, herein referred to as the “medical device.” The medical device had many software and hardware configurations that had to be developed, integrated, managed, and tested. There were a number of problems with the manual processes that were being used to verify and validate the product, so this project developed a system called the “Software Assembly Line” to continuously build software and automatically test it on multiple hardware configurations. As a result, software quality and predictability were improved, and the number …
Parallelizing A Nondeterministic Optimization Algorithm, Sammy Raymond D'Souza
Parallelizing A Nondeterministic Optimization Algorithm, Sammy Raymond D'Souza
Theses Digitization Project
This research explores the idea that for certain optimization problems there is a way to parallelize the algorithm such that the parallel efficiency can exceed one hundred percent. Specifically, a parallel compiler, PC, is used to apply shortcutting techniquest to a metaheuristic Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), to solve the well-known Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) on a cluster running Message Passing Interface (MPI). The results of both serial and parallel execution are compared using test datasets from the TSPLIB.

Participation In The Environmental Information Exchange Network Using The National Emission Inventory Dataflow, Kent M. Thomas
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and state environmental agencies have implemented a large nationwide system termed the Environmental Information Exchange Network, intended to consolidate and standardize the mechanism in which environmental data is exchanged between states, EPA, and other environmental organizations. The Exchange Network infrastructure is based on XML, Web services, and the Internet. The State of Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has an interest in participating in the Exchange Network. This project involves creation of software to extract, transform, validate, and submit DEC's air emissions data to EPA through the Exchange Network. Development of this software also …

Improving The Usability Of Evolutionary Algorithms: Self-Adaptive Semi-Autonomous Democratic Parent Selection, Joshua M. Eads
Improving The Usability Of Evolutionary Algorithms: Self-Adaptive Semi-Autonomous Democratic Parent Selection, Joshua M. Eads
Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)
One of the primary obstacles to Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) fulfilling their promise as easy to use general-purpose problem solvers is the difficulty of correctly configuring them for specific problems such as to obtain satisfactory performance. This paper introduces the concept of democratic, semi-autonomous parent selection by encoding and evolving population rating operators as in Genetic Programming and shows the potential of extending self-adaptation by pairing mates using an adaptation of the Stable Roommates problem. Replacing the typical general parent selection algorithm with autonomously evolved individual selection parameters has the prospective to bring EAs a step closer to their promise as …

Atmospheric Scaling Of Cosmogenic Nuclide Production: Climate Effect, Jane Staiger, John Gosse, Rick Toracinta, Bob Oglesby, James Fastook, Jesse V. Johnson
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Absorption of cosmic rays by atmospheric mass varies temporally due to a redistribution of atmospheric pressure by ice sheets during glaciations, the compression and expansion of the atmosphere due to cooling and warming, and changes in katabatic winds near large ice masses. These atmospheric processes can result in changes in production rates of cosmogenic nuclides which, when integrated over long exposure durations may result in 0% to >5% adjustments in site production rates depending on location. Combining a CCM3 model with imbedded ice sheets for 20 ka, we show that production rates changes (relative to today) are greatest at high …

Modeling Long-Term Stability Of The Ferrar Glacier, East Antarctica: Implications For Interpreting Cosmogenic Nuclide Inheritance, Jesse V. Johnson, Jane W. Staiger
Computer Science Faculty Publications
The Ferrar Glacier extends from the Taylor Dome, through the Royal Society Range, to the Ross Sea. Its pathway is strongly influenced by large-scale topographic features. Ice thins and flows over these features, like water over a dam. Recently acquired evidence demonstrates that the profile of the Ferrar Glacier has been relatively static for the last 4 million years. This long record of stability is in sharp contrast to numerous other features in Antarctica and motivates an exploration of the stability with a numerical model. Large variations in ice thickness along the Ferrar profile make necessary a thermomechanically coupled model …

The focus of the paper is on the analysis of performance effects of different security solutions modeled as aspects in UML. Aspect oriented modeling (AOM) allows software designers to isolate and separately address solutions for crosscutting concerns, which are defined as distinct UML aspect models, then are composed with the primary UML model of the system under development. For performance analysis we use techniques developed previously in the PUMA project, which take as input UML models annotated with the standard UML Profile for Schedulability, Performance and Time (SPT), and transform them first into Core Scenario Model (CSM) and then into …
Learning Geometry-Free Face Re-Lighting, Thomas Brendan Moore
Learning Geometry-Free Face Re-Lighting, Thomas Brendan Moore
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The accurate modeling of the variability of illumination in a class of images is a fundamental problem that occurs in many areas of computer vision and graphics. For instance, in computer vision there is the problem of facial recognition. Simply, one would hope to be able to identify a known face under any illumination. On the other hand, in graphics one could imagine a system that, given an image, the illumination model could be identified and then used to create new images. In this thesis we describe a method for learning the illumination model for a class of images. Once …

Managing The Business Of Software Product Line: An Empirical Investigation Of Key Business Factors, Faheem Ahmed, Luiz Fernando Capretz
Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
Business has been highlighted as a one of the critical dimensions of software product line engineering. This paper’s main contribution is to increase the understanding of the influence of key business factors by showing empirically that they play an imperative role in managing a successful software product line. A quantitative survey of software organizations currently involved in the business of developing software product lines over a wide range of operations, including consumer electronics, telecommunications, avionics, and information technology, was designed to test the conceptual model and hypotheses of the study. This is the first study to demonstrate the relationships between …

Employing Intelligent Agents To Automate Sla Creation, Halina Kaminski, Mark Perry
Computer Science Publications
Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are commonly prepared and signed agreements that form the contracts between a service provider and its customers, defining the obligations and liabilities of the parties. Naturally, SLAs should reflect the business needs of both customer and supplier. SLAs are usually formed through either the adoption of a boilerplate agreement from the provider, or through a mediation/negotiation process between the parties. With the increasing adoption of software supply being implemented as a network service, such schemes are rigid or slow and costly, This paper proposes a system that the parties can use to facilitate both fast and …

Consumer health information written by health care professionals is often inaccessible to the consumers it is written for. Traditional readability formulas examine syntactic features like sentence length and number of syllables, ignoring the target audience's grasp of the words themselves. The use of specialized vocabulary disrupts the understanding of patients with low reading skills, causing a decrease in comprehension. A naive Bayes classifier for three levels of increasing medical terminology specificity (consumer/patient, novice health learner, medical professional) was created with a lexicon generated from a representative medical corpus. Ninety-six percent accuracy in classification was attained. The classifier was then applied …
