Eliciting Software Requirements For Elementary Keyboarding Instruction, Mark A. Eirich

Capstone Research Projects

This Southern Scholars research project developed requirements for keyboarding instruction software to be used in the elementary classroom. The project was undertaken on the premise that the teachers in the Georgia-Cumberland Conference1 are not satisfied with any currently existing keyboarding instruction software, and that software better suited to the classroom could be designed. Methods used to gather data included: a literature review on keyboarding instruction methods, a summary review of existing keyboarding software interviews with teachers and school staff, and a survey of elementary teachers to evaluate their current situation and identify the software features they consider most important. These …

Knowledge utilizers also valued knowledge richness in terms of relevancy and timeliness. From the social perspective, both knowledge utilizers and contributors considered time/availability as the major determinant of their behaviors. The results also suggested that knowledge utillizers valued the technical factors more than the social factors, whereas, …

Filling The Ontology Space For Coalition Battle Management Language, Charles Turnitsa, Curtis Blais, Andreas Tolk Jan 2007

Filling The Ontology Space For Coalition Battle Management Language, Charles Turnitsa, Curtis Blais, Andreas Tolk

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

The Coalition Battle Management Language is a language for representing and exchanging plans, orders, and reports across live, constructive and robotic forces in multi-service, multi-national and multi-organizational operations. Standardization efforts in the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization seek to define this language through three parallel activities: (1) specify a sufficient data model to unambiguously define a set of orders using the Joint Command, Control, and Consultation Information Exchange Data Model (JC3IEDM) as a starting point; (2) develop a formal grammar (lexicon and production rules) to formalize the definition of orders, requests, and reports; (3) develop a formal battle management ontology to …

The model was successfully applied in various domains of systems, cybernetics, and informatics.

Some Peer-To-Peer, Democratically And Voluntarily Produced Thoughts About 'The Wealth Of Networks: How Social Production Transforms Markets And Freedom,' By Yochai Benkler, Ann Bartow Jan 2007

Some Peer-To-Peer, Democratically And Voluntarily Produced Thoughts About 'The Wealth Of Networks: How Social Production Transforms Markets And Freedom,' By Yochai Benkler, Ann Bartow

Law Faculty Scholarship

In this review essay, Bartow concludes that The Wealth of Networks: How Social Production Transforms Markets and Freedom by Yochai Benkler is a book well worth reading, but that Benkler still has a bit more work to do before his Grand Unifying Theory of Life, The Internet, and Everything is satisfactorily complete. It isn't enough to concede that the Internet won't benefit everyone. He needs to more thoroughly consider the ways in which the lives of poor people actually worsen when previously accessible information, goods and services are rendered less convenient or completely unattainable by their migration online. Additionally, the …

Using Permuted States Of Validated Simulation To Analyze Conflict Rates In Optimistic Replication, An-I Andy Wang, Geoffrey H. Kuenning, Peter Reiher Jan 2007

Using Permuted States Of Validated Simulation To Analyze Conflict Rates In Optimistic Replication, An-I Andy Wang, Geoffrey H. Kuenning, Peter Reiher

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Optimistic replication provides high data availability in the presence of network outages. Although widely deployed, this relaxed consistency model introduces concurrent updates, whose behavior is poorly understood due to the vast state space.

This paper introduces the notion of permuted states to eliminate system states that are redundant and unreachable, which can constitute the majority of states (4069 out of 4096 for four replicas). With the aid of permuted states, we are for the first time able to construct analytical models beyond the two-replica case. By examining the analysis for 2 to 4 replicas, we can demystify the process of …

Verifying Noninterference In A Cyber-Physical System The Advanced Electric Power Grid, David Cape, Xiaoqing Frank Liu, Bruce M. Mcmillin, Yan Sun Jan 2007

Verifying Noninterference In A Cyber-Physical System The Advanced Electric Power Grid, David Cape, Xiaoqing Frank Liu, Bruce M. Mcmillin, Yan Sun

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The advanced electric power grid is a complex real-time system having both cyber and physical components. While each component may function correctly, independently, their composition may yield incorrectness due to interference. One specific type of interference is in the frequency domain, essentially, violations of the Nyquist rate. The challenge is to encode these signal processing problem characteristics into a form that can be model checked. To verify the correctness of the cyber-physical composition using model-checking techniques requires that a model be constructed that can represent frequency interference. In this paper, RT-PROMELA was used to construct the model, which was checked …

Natural Language Processing And E-Government: Extracting Reusable Crime Report Information, Gondy A. Leroy, Alicia Iriberri '06 Jan 2007

Natural Language Processing And E-Government: Extracting Reusable Crime Report Information, Gondy A. Leroy, Alicia Iriberri '06

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Crime reporting needs to be possible 24/7. Although 911 and tip-lines are the most publicized reporting mechanisms, several other options exist, ranging from in-person reporting to online submissions. Internet-based crime reporting systems allow victims and witnesses of crime to report incidents to police 24/7 from any location. However, these existing e-mail and text-based systems provide little support for witnesses' memory recall leading to reports with less information and lower accuracy. These systems also do not facilitate reuse and integration of the reported information with other information systems. We are developing an anonymous Online Crime Reporting System that is designed to …

Containing Denial-Of-Service Attacks In Broadcast Authentication In Sensor Networks, Ronghua Wang, Wenliang Du, Peng Ning Jan 2007

Containing Denial-Of-Service Attacks In Broadcast Authentication In Sensor Networks, Ronghua Wang, Wenliang Du, Peng Ning

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Broadcast authentication is an important application in sensor networks. Public Key Cryptography (PKC) is desirable for this application, but due to the resource constraints on sensor nodes, these operations are expensive, which means sensor networks using PKC are susceptible to Denial of Service (DoS) attacks: attackers keep broadcasting bogus messages, which will incur extra costs, thus exhaust the energy of the honest nodes. In addition, the long time to verify each message using PKC increases the response time of the nodes; it is impractical for the nodes to validate each incoming message before forwarding it. In this paper we discuss …

Finding Molecular Complexes Through Multiple Layer Clustering Of Protein Interaction Networks, Bill Andreopoulos, Aijun An, Xiangji Huang, Xiaogang Wang Jan 2007

Finding Molecular Complexes Through Multiple Layer Clustering Of Protein Interaction Networks, Bill Andreopoulos, Aijun An, Xiangji Huang, Xiaogang Wang

Faculty Publications, Computer Science

Clustering protein-protein interaction networks (PINs) helps to identify complexes that guide the cell machinery. Clustering algorithms often create a flat clustering, without considering the layered structure of PINs. We propose the MULIC clustering algorithm that produces layered clusters. We applied MULIC to five PINs. Clusters correlate with known MIPS protein complexes. For example, a cluster of 79 proteins overlaps with a known complex of 88 proteins. Proteins in top cluster layers tend to be more representative of complexes than proteins in bottom layers. Lab work on finding unknown complexes or determining drug effects can be guided by top layer proteins.

Requirements Tracing On Target (Retro): Improving Software Maintenance Through Traceability Recovery, Jane Huffman Hayes, Alex Dekhtyar, Senthil Sundaram, E. Ashlee Holbrook, Sravanthi Vadlamudi, Alain April Jan 2007

Requirements Tracing On Target (Retro): Improving Software Maintenance Through Traceability Recovery, Jane Huffman Hayes, Alex Dekhtyar, Senthil Sundaram, E. Ashlee Holbrook, Sravanthi Vadlamudi, Alain April

Computer Science and Software Engineering

A number of important tasks in software maintenance require an up-to-date requirements traceability matrix (RTM): change impact analysis, determination of test cases to execute for regression testing, etc. The generation and maintenance of RTMs are tedious and error-prone, and they are hence often not done. In this paper, we present REquirements TRacing On-target (RETRO), a special- purpose requirements tracing tool. We discuss how RETRO automates the generation of RTMs and present the results of a study comparing manual RTM generation to RTM generation using RETRO. The study showed that RETRO found significantly more correct links than manual tracing and took …
