A Labview-Based Virtual Instrument For Engineering Education: A Numerical Fourier Transform Tool, Levent Sevgi̇, Çağatay Uluişik

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Engineering is based on practice. The minima of this practice should be given during the university education. This has become more and more comprehensive and expensive parallel to high-technology devices developed and presented to societies. Computers, microprocessor-based devices, programmable systems on Chip (PSoC), etc., make engineering education not only very complex but interdisciplinary as well. Building undergraduate labs has become more and more expensive if only physical experimentation and hands-on training are targeted. On the other hand, simple, comparatively much cheaper software may turn a regular personal computer (PC) into a virtual lab. The key question therefore is, to establish …

Complex Analysis Of The Lossy-Transmission Line Theory: A Generalized Smith Chart, E. Gago-Ribas, C. Dehesa-Martinez, M. J. Gonzalez-Morales

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

It has been very usual in the specialized literature to skip the detailed study of the lossy transmission line theory by reducing it to the low-loss approximation. Although this is valid in the most common practical cases, the study of the general lossy case becomes very important due to the fact that it makes possible a better and deeper understanding of the physical effects associated to general losses, as well as the low-loss frequency-dependent regime. Besides, the analysis of the general case provides important results that may be extended to the analysis of real waveguiding systems, facilitating the understanding and …

Using Neural Networks To Develop A New Model To Screen Applicants For Apartment Rentals, Michael T. Furick Jan 2006

Using Neural Networks To Develop A New Model To Screen Applicants For Apartment Rentals, Michael T. Furick

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Credit scoring is a mathematical means of summarizing a consumer's credit and financial history into a three-digit number. This number provides an easy means of identifying and sorting consumer behavior into categories based on their financial history. To select applicants for loans and to set interest rates on loans, banks and financial institutions routinely use credit scoring. Auto insurance companies also use scoring to decide which consumers will be offered auto insurance and to set the price for auto insurance. Despite success in these two industries, scoring does not appear to be effective in the apartment rental industry in picking …

An Improved Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm With Adaptable Parameters, Khoa Duc Tran Jan 2006

An Improved Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm With Adaptable Parameters, Khoa Duc Tran

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs) are not easy to use because they require parameter tunings of three main parameters - population size, crossover probability, and mutation probability - in order to achieve desirable solutions and performance for an arbitrary complex problem. Moreover, the use of fixed parameter settings may lead to slow convergence and sub-optimal solutions. This dissertation develops a MOEA with self-adaptive crossover, self-adaptive mutation, and adaptive population size parameters for automating the process of adjusting appropriate parameter values in order to make the MOEA more efficient, simple to use and available to more users. The MOEA with adaptable parameters …

Semi-Automated Grading Of Novice Java Programs For An Online Grading System, Micheal Alexis Ponniah

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

In recent years, World Wide Web usage for teaching and learning has increased rapidly. At the same time, even with some computerized works involved, the traditional grading of home works have not changed too much. Clearly an online grading system would be a highly desirable addition to the educational tool-kit, particularly if it can provide less costly and more effective outcome. The task of grading student programs is neither simple nor entirely mechanical; rather, it is often a tedious and laborious process that is prone to human error. Recently there are a lot of researches in automating this job. Of …

This was extended to grey literature and acknowledgements statements from the same period to obtain a more global picture.

Research participants were evaluated in terms of their contributions (journal articles, conference papers, or acknowledged research assistance). Changes were mapped chronologically and by profess ion. The participation of …

A Comprehensive Analysis Of The Effect Of Microarray Data, Monika Ray, Johannes Freudenberg, Weixiong Zhang Jan 2006

A Comprehensive Analysis Of The Effect Of Microarray Data, Monika Ray, Johannes Freudenberg, Weixiong Zhang

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Background: Microarray data preprocessing, such as differentially expressed (DE) genes selection, is performed prior to higher level statistical analysis in order to account for technical variability. Preprocessing for the Affymetrix GeneChip includes background correction, normalisation and summarisation. Numerous preprocessing methods have been proposed with little consensus as to which is the most suitable. Furthermore, due to poor concordance among results from cross-platform analyses, protocols are being developed to enable cross-platform reproducibility. However, the effect of data analysis on a single platform is still unknown. The objective of our study is two-fold: first to determine whether there is consistency in the …

The Meta-Theory Of Q_0 In The Calculus Of Inductive Constructions, Master's Thesis, May 2006, Li-Yang Tan Jan 2006

The Meta-Theory Of Q_0 In The Calculus Of Inductive Constructions, Master's Thesis, May 2006, Li-Yang Tan

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

The notion of a proof is central to all of mathematics. In the language of formal logic, a proof is a finite sequence of inferences from a set of axioms, and any statement one yields from such a finitistic procedure is called a theorem. For better or for worse, this is far from the form a traditional mathematical proof takes. Mathematicians write proofs that omit routine logical steps, and details deemed tangential to the central result are often elided. These proofs are fuzzy and human-centric, and a great amount of context is assumed on the part of the reader. While …

The Remote-Clique Problem Revisited, Benjamin E. Birnbaum Jan 2006

The Remote-Clique Problem Revisited, Benjamin E. Birnbaum

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Given a positive integer k and a complete graph with non-negative edge weights that satisfy the triangle inequality, the remote-clique problem is to find a subset of k vertices having a maximum-weight induced subgraph. A greedy algorithm for the problem has been shown to have an approximation ratio of 4, but this analysis was not shown to be tight. In this thesis, we present an algorithm called d-Greedy Augment that generalizes this greedy algorithm (they are equivalent when d = 1). We use the technique of factor-revealing linear programs to prove that d-Greedy Augment, which has a running time of …
