Spanning Eulerian Subgraphs In Claw-Free Graphs, Zhi-Hong Chen, Hong-Jian Lai, Weiqi Luo, Yehomg Shao

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

A graph is claw-free if it has no induced K 1,3, subgraph. A graph is essential 4-edge-connected if removing at most three edges, the resulting graph has at most one component having edges. In this note, we show that every essential 4-edge-connected claw free graph has a spanning Eulerian subgraph with maximum degree at most 4.

Sensor-Based Computing Techniques For Real-Time Traffic Evacuation Management, Georgiana Hamza-Lup Jan 2006

Sensor-Based Computing Techniques For Real-Time Traffic Evacuation Management, Georgiana Hamza-Lup

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The threat of terrorist incidents is higher than ever before and devastating acts, such as the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, have left many concerns about the possibility of future incidents and their potential impact. Unlike some natural disasters that can be anticipated, terrorist attacks are sudden and unexpected. Even if sometimes we do have partial information about a possible attack, it is generally not known exactly where, when, or how an attack will occur. This lack of information posses great challenges on those responsible for security, specifically, on their ability to respond fast, whenever …

Video Content Extraction: Scene Segmentation, Linking And Attention Detection, Yun Zhai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this fast paced digital age, a vast amount of videos are produced every day, such as movies, TV programs, personal home videos, surveillance video, etc. This places a high demand for effective video data analysis and management techniques. In this dissertation, we have developed new techniques for segmentation, linking and understanding of video scenes. Firstly, we have developed a video scene segmentation framework that segments the video content into story units. Then, a linking method is designed to find the semantic correlation between video scenes/stories. Finally, to better understand the video content, we have developed a spatiotemporal attention detection …

Tracking is an element in many of these applications, for purposes like detecting anomalous behavior, classifying video clips, and measuring athletic performance. In this dissertation we focus on augmented reality, but the methods and conclusions are applicable to a wide variety …

Modeling Autonomous Agents In Military Simulations, Varol Kaptan Jan 2006

Modeling Autonomous Agents In Military Simulations, Varol Kaptan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Simulation is an important tool for prediction and assessment of the behavior of complex systems and situations. The importance of simulation has increased tremendously during the last few decades, mainly because the rapid pace of development in the field of electronics has turned the computer from a costly and obscure piece of equipment to a cheap ubiquitous tool which is now an integral part of our daily lives. While such technological improvements make it easier to analyze well-understood deterministic systems, increase in speed and storage capacity alone are not enough when simulating situations where human beings and their behavior are …

Interdependency Of Pharmacokinetic Parameters: A Chicken-And-Egg Problem? Not!, Reza Mehvar Jan 2006

Interdependency Of Pharmacokinetic Parameters: A Chicken-And-Egg Problem? Not!, Reza Mehvar

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Pharmacokinetic (PK) software packages are widely used by scientists in different disciplines to estimate PK parameters. However, their use without a clear understanding of physiological parameters affecting the PK parameters and how different PK parameters are related to each other may result in erroneous interpretation of data. Often, mathematical relationships used for the estimation of PK parameters obscure the true physiological relationships among these parameters, prompting a discussion of which parameter came first and giving the appearance of the-chicken-and-the-egg dilemma. In this article, the author attempts to show how different PK parameters are related to physiological parameters and each other …

A Generic Autonomous Clustering-Based Heterogeneous Waveband Switching Architecture In Wdm Networks, Mengke Li, Byrav Ramamurthy

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Heterogeneous waveband switching (HeteroWBS) in WDM networks reduces the network operational costs. We propose an autonomous clustering-based HeteroWBS architecture to support the design of efficient HeteroWBS algorithms under dynamic traffic requests in such a network.

Active Learning To Maximize Area Under The Roc Curve, Matt Culver, Deng Kun, Stephen Scott Jan 2006

Active Learning To Maximize Area Under The Roc Curve, Matt Culver, Deng Kun, Stephen Scott

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

In active learning, a machine learning algorithmis given an unlabeled set of examples U, and is allowed to request labels for a relatively small subset of U to use for training. The goal is then to judiciously choose which examples in U to have labeled in order to optimize some performance criterion, e.g. classification accuracy. We study how active learning affects AUC. We examine two existing algorithms from the literature and present our own active learning algorithms designed to maximize the AUC of the hypothesis. One of our algorithms was consistently the top performer, and Closest Sampling from the literature …

Scaling A Dataflow Testing Methodology To The Multiparadigmworld Of Commercial Spreadsheets, Marc Fisher Ii, Gregg Rothermel, Tyler Creelan, Margaret Burnett Jan 2006

Scaling A Dataflow Testing Methodology To The Multiparadigmworld Of Commercial Spreadsheets, Marc Fisher Ii, Gregg Rothermel, Tyler Creelan, Margaret Burnett

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Spreadsheets are widely used but often contain faults. Thus, in prior work we presented a data-flow testing methodology for use with spreadsheets, which studies have shown can be used cost-effectively by end-user programmers. To date, however, the methodology has been investigated across a limited set of spreadsheet language features. Commercial spreadsheet environments are multiparadigm languages, utilizing features not accommodated by our prior approaches. In addition, most spreadsheets contain large numbers of replicated formulas that severely limit the efficiency of data-flow testing approaches. We show how to handle these two issues with a new data-flow adequacy criterion and automated detection of …

An Ontology-Based Metamodel For Software Patterns, Scott Henninger, Padmapriya Ashokkumar Jan 2006

An Ontology-Based Metamodel For Software Patterns, Scott Henninger, Padmapriya Ashokkumar

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Patterns have been successfully used in software design to reuse proven solutions. But the complex interconnections and the number of pattern collections is becoming a barrier for identifying relevant patterns and pattern combinations for a given design context. More formal representations of patterns are needed that allow machine processing and the creation of systematic pattern languages that guide composition of patterns into coherent design solutions. In this paper, we present a technique based on Description Logic and Semantic Web technologies to address these problems. A metamodel is presented for developing pattern languages using this technology. Usability patterns are used to …

Practical Experiences In Using Model-Driven Engineering To Develop Trustworthy Computing Systems, Thomas Weigert, Frank Weil

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we describe how Motorola has deployed model-driven engineering in product development, in particular for the development of trustworthy and highly reliable telecommunications systems, and outline the benefits obtained. Model-driven engineering has dramatically increased both the quality and the reliability of software developed in our organization, as well as the productivity of our software engineers. Our experience demonstrates that model-driven engineering significantly improves the development process for trustworthy computing systems.

Cadre: A Collaborative Replica Allocation And Deallocation Approach For Mobile-P2p Networks, Anirban Mondal, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Masaru Kitsuregawa Jan 2006

Cadre: A Collaborative Replica Allocation And Deallocation Approach For Mobile-P2p Networks, Anirban Mondal, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Masaru Kitsuregawa

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes CADRE (Collaborative Allocation and Deallocation of Replicas with Efficiency), a dynamic replication scheme for improving the typically low data availability in mobile ad-hoc peer-to-peer (M-P2P) networks. The main contributions of CADRE are two-fold. First, it collaboratively performs both replica allocation and deallocation in tandem to facilitate optimal replication and to avoid 'thrashing' conditions. Second, it addresses fair replica allocation across the MHs. CADRE deploys a hybrid super-peer architecture in which some of the MHs act as the 'gateway nodes' (GNs) in a given region. GNs facilitate both search and replication. Our performance study indicates that CADRE indeed …

Predicting Domain Specific Entities With Limited Background Knowledge, Christopher Thomas, Amit P. Sheth Jan 2006

Predicting Domain Specific Entities With Limited Background Knowledge, Christopher Thomas, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

This paper proposes a framework for automatic recognition of domain-specific entities from text, given limited background knowledge, e.g. in form of an ontology. The algorithm exploits several lightweight natural language processing techniques, such as tokenization and stemming, as well as statistical techniques, such as singular value decomposition (SVD) to suggest domain relatedness of unknown entities.

Using Query-Specific Variance Estimates To Combine Bayesian Classifiers, Chi-Hoon Lee, Russell Greiner, Shaojun Wang Jan 2006

Using Query-Specific Variance Estimates To Combine Bayesian Classifiers, Chi-Hoon Lee, Russell Greiner, Shaojun Wang

Kno.e.sis Publications

Many of today's best classification results are obtained by combining the responses of a set of base classifiers to produce an answer for the query. This paper explores a novel "query specific" combination rule: After learning a set of simple belief network classifiers, we produce an answer to each query by combining their individual responses, using weights based inversely on their respective variances around their responses. These variances are based on the uncertainty of the network parameters, which in turn depend on the training datasample. In essence, this variance quantifies the base classifier's confidence of its response to this query. …

Clustering Similarity Comparison Using Density Profiles, Eric Bae, James Bailey, Guozhu Dong Jan 2006

Clustering Similarity Comparison Using Density Profiles, Eric Bae, James Bailey, Guozhu Dong

Kno.e.sis Publications

The unsupervised nature of cluster analysis means that objects can be clustered in many ways, allowing different clustering algorithms to generate vastly different results. To address this, clustering comparison methods have traditionally been used to quantify the degree of similarity between alternative clusterings. However, existing techniques utilize only the point memberships to calculate the similarity, which can lead to unintuitive results. They also cannot be applied to analyze clusterings which only partially share points, which can be the case in stream clustering. In this paper we introduce a new measure named ADCO, which takes into account density profiles for each …

An Online Discriminative Approach To Background Subtraction, Li Cheng, Shaojun Wang, Terry Caelli Jan 2006

An Online Discriminative Approach To Background Subtraction, Li Cheng, Shaojun Wang, Terry Caelli

Kno.e.sis Publications

We present a simple, principled approach to detecting foreground objects in video sequences in real-time. Our method is based on an on-line discriminative learning technique that is able to cope with illumination changes due to discontinuous switching, or illumination drifts caused by slower processes such as varying time of the day. Starting from a discriminative learning principle, we derive a training algorithm that, for each pixel, computes a weighted linear combination of selected past observations with time-decay. We present experimental results that show the proposed approach outperforms existing methods on both synthetic sequences and real video data.

Formalizing Ontology Alignment And Its Operations With Category Theory, Antoine Zimmermann, Markus Krotzsch, Jerome Euzenat, Pascal Hitzler Jan 2006

Formalizing Ontology Alignment And Its Operations With Category Theory, Antoine Zimmermann, Markus Krotzsch, Jerome Euzenat, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

An ontology alignment is the expression of relations between different ontologies. In order to view alignments independently from the language expressing ontologies and from the techniques used for finding the alignments, we use a category-theoretical model in which ontologies are the objects. We introduce a categorical structure, called V-alignment, made of a pair of morphisms with a common domain having the ontologies as codomain. This structure serves to design an algebra that describes formally what are ontology merging, alignment composition, union and intersection using categorical constructions. This enables combining alignments of various provenance. Although the desirable properties of this algebra …

Effectiveness Of Asynchronous Reference Services For Distance Learning Students Within Florida's Community College System, Patricia C. Profeta Jan 2006

Effectiveness Of Asynchronous Reference Services For Distance Learning Students Within Florida's Community College System, Patricia C. Profeta

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The impact of distance learning on higher education and the need to provide equitable library services to students in the digital environment emerged as critical areas during the 1990s. Library services available to distance learning students included digital reference and instructional services, remote access to online research tools, database and research tutorials, interlibrary loan, and document delivery. Digital reference services appeared to be one of the more significant services proffered by academic libraries although these services were developed often without forethought to goals and assessment. The purpose of this study was to examine the adequacy of asynchronous e-mail reference services …

Development Of A Service-Oriented Communication Platform For Heterogeneous Voice Over Ip Networks., Aisling O'Driscoll Jan 2006

Development Of A Service-Oriented Communication Platform For Heterogeneous Voice Over Ip Networks., Aisling O'Driscoll

Theses

As broadband services have become more widespread in recent years due to a variety of government initiatives and the establishment of Wireless Internet Service Providers, user requirements have evolved and the market has become more competitive. Whilst this is beneficial for consumers it means that Internet Service Providers must offer a more diverse range of services coupled with standard broadband packages to distinguish themselves from their competitors, generate new revenue and strengthen their competitive advantage. Therefore many providers are looking to Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs) to provide communication platforms, enabling services such as Voice over IP (VoIP) along with other …

Decentralized Power Control With Implementation For Rfid Networks, Kainan Cha, Anil Ramachandran, David Pommerenke, Jagannathan Sarangapani Jan 2006

Decentralized Power Control With Implementation For Rfid Networks, Kainan Cha, Anil Ramachandran, David Pommerenke, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In radio frequency identification (RFID) systems, the detection range and read rates will suffer from interference among high power reading devices. This problem grows severely and degrades system performance in dense RFID networks. In this paper, we investigate a suite of feasible power control schemes to ensure overall coverage area of the system while maintaining a desired read rate. The power control scheme and MAC protocol dynamically adjusts the RFID reader power output in response to the interference level seen locally during tag reading for an acceptable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We present novel distributed adaptive power control (DAPC) and probabilistic …

Distributed Power Control For Cellular Networks In The Presence Of Channel Uncertainties, Maciej Jan Zawodniok, Q. Shang, Jagannathan Sarangapani Jan 2006

Distributed Power Control For Cellular Networks In The Presence Of Channel Uncertainties, Maciej Jan Zawodniok, Q. Shang, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a novel distributed power control (DPC) scheme for cellular network in the presence of radio channel uncertainties such as path loss, shadowing, and Rayleigh fading is presented. Since these uncertainties can attenuate the received signal strength and can cause variations in the received Signal-to-Interference ratio (SIR), a new DPC scheme, which can estimate the slowly varying channel uncertainty, is proposed so that a target SIR at the receiver can be maintained. Further, the standard assumption of a constant interference during a link's power update used in other works in the literature is relaxed. A CDMA-based cellular network …

An Internet Based Intelligent Argumentation System For Collaborative Engineering Design, Xiaoqing Frank Liu, Samir Raorane, Man Zheng, Ming-Chuan Leu Jan 2006

An Internet Based Intelligent Argumentation System For Collaborative Engineering Design, Xiaoqing Frank Liu, Samir Raorane, Man Zheng, Ming-Chuan Leu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Modern product design is a very complicated process which involves groups of designers, manufacturers, suppliers, and customer representatives. Conflicts are unavoidable in collaboration among multiple stakeholders, who have different objectives, requirements, and priorities. Unfortunately, current web-based collaborative engineering design systems do not support collaborative conflict resolution. In this paper, we will develop an intelligent computational argumentation model to enable management of a large scale argumentation network, and resolution of conflicts based on argumentation from many participants. A web-based intelligent argumentation tool is developed as a part of a web-based collaborative engineering design system based on the above model to resolve …

Position Tracking And Motion Prediction Using Fuzzy Logic, Patrick Rodjito Jan 2006

Position Tracking And Motion Prediction Using Fuzzy Logic, Patrick Rodjito

Honors Theses

Unlike with traditional, computationally expensive algorithms, with Fuzzy Logic (FL) one does not have to own a fast computer or very precise measuring instruments to get good results. At lower costs, FL provides a simple way to arrive at a definite conclusion based upon vague, ambiguous, imprecise, noisy, or missing input information. This is a facet of AI that appears to resemble human intuition in an important way: the ability to make quick and urgent judgment calls, on the spot, without the need to be absolutely certain of the input. The benefit brought by a low-cost solution like FL to …

The architecture implements Robot Schemas in Soar and aims to use Soar learning to improve the speed and accuracy of visual comprehension.

Template-Based Metadata Extraction For Heterogeneous Collection, Jianfeng Tang Jan 2006

Template-Based Metadata Extraction For Heterogeneous Collection, Jianfeng Tang

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

With the growth of the Internet and related tools, there has been a rapid growth of online resources. In particular, by using high-quality OCR (Optical Character Recognition) tools it has become easy to convert an existing corpus into digital form and make it available online. However, a number of organizations have legacy collections that lack metadata. The lack of metadata hampers not only the discovery and dispersion of these collections over the Web, but also their interoperability with other collections. Unfortunately, manual metadata creation is expensive and time-consuming for a large collection, and most existing automated metadata extraction approaches have …

A Novel Minimized Dead-End Elimination Criterion And Its Application To Protein Redesign In A Hybrid Scoring And Search Algorithm For Computing Partition Functions Over Molecular Ensembles, Ivelin Georgiev, Ryan H. Lilien, Bruce R. Donald Jan 2006

Donald

Computer Science Technical Reports

Novel molecular function can be achieved by redesigning an enzyme's active site so that it will perform its chemical reaction on a novel substrate. One of the main challenges for protein redesign is the efficient evaluation of a combinatorial number of candidate structures. The modeling of protein flexibility, typically by using a rotamer library of commonly-observed low-energy side-chain conformations, further increases the complexity of the redesign problem. A dominant algorithm for protein redesign is Dead-End Elimination (DEE), which prunes the majority of candidate conformations by eliminating rigid rotamers that provably are not part of the Global Minimum Energy Conformation (GMEC). …

Model Generation For Generalized Quantifiers Via Answer Set Programming, Yuliya Lierler, Günther Görz Jan 2006

Model Generation For Generalized Quantifiers Via Answer Set Programming, Yuliya Lierler, Günther Görz

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

For the semantic evaluation of natural language sentences, in particular those containing generalized quantifiers, we subscribe to the generate and test methodology to produce models of such sentences. These models are considered as means by which the sentences can be interpreted within a natural language processing system. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate that answer set programming is a simple, efficient and particularly well suited model generation technique for this purpose, leading to a straightforward implementation.

Controlling Rail Potential Of Dc Supplied Rail Traction Systems, Mehmet Turan Söylemez, Süleyman Açikbaş, Adnan Kaypmaz Jan 2006

Controlling Rail Potential Of Dc Supplied Rail Traction Systems, Mehmet Turan Söylemez, Süleyman Açikbaş, Adnan Kaypmaz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Most modern DC electrified mass transit systems use a totally floating earth as their grounding strategy. A well-known problem related with totally floating systems is that the touch potentials can be dangerously high. In order to reduce the voltages on rails, several devices exist. Most of these devices allow a direct connection to earth when a certain voltage threshold is exceeded. In this paper, the working principles of these devices are given and the effect of certain parameters related with these devices on the minimum achievable touch potentials is investigated.

Realtime Query Expansion And Procedural Interfaces For Information Hierarchies, Saverio Perugini Jan 2006

Realtime Query Expansion And Procedural Interfaces For Information Hierarchies, Saverio Perugini

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We demonstrate the use of two user interfaces for interacting with web hierarchies. One uses the dependencies underlying a hierarchy to perform real-time query expansion and, in this way, acts as an in situ feedback mechanism. The other enables the user to cascade the output from one interaction to the input of another, and so on, and, in this way, supports procedural information-seeking tasks without disrupting the flow of interaction.
