Metric Measurements On A Plane From A Single Image, Micah K. Johnson, Hany Farid Aug 2006

Metric Measurements On A Plane From A Single Image, Micah K. Johnson, Hany Farid

Computer Science Technical Reports

The past decade has seen considerable advances in the application of principles from projective geometry to problems in image analysis and computer vision. In this paper, we review a subset of this work, and leverage these results for the purpose of forensic analysis. Specifically, we review three techniques for making metric measurements on planar surfaces from a single image. The resulting techniques should prove useful in forensic settings where real-world measurements are required.

Min–Max Hyperellipsoidal Clustering For Anomaly Detection In Network Security, Suseela T. Sarasamma, Qiuming Zhu Aug 2006

Min–Max Hyperellipsoidal Clustering For Anomaly Detection In Network Security, Suseela T. Sarasamma, Qiuming Zhu

Computer Science Faculty Publications

A novel hyperellipsoidal clustering technique is presented for an intrusion-detection system in network security. Hyperellipsoidal clusters toward maximum intracluster similarity and minimum intercluster similarity are generated from training data sets. The novelty of the technique lies in the fact that the parameters needed to construct higher order data models in general multivariate Gaussian functions are incrementally derived from the data sets using accretive processes. The technique is implemented in a feedforward neural network that uses a Gaussian radial basis function as the model generator. An evaluation based on the inclusiveness and exclusiveness of samples with respect to specific criteria is …

Information Availability And Security Policy, Andrew P. Martin, Deepak Khazanchi Aug 2006

Information Availability And Security Policy, Andrew P. Martin, Deepak Khazanchi

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Information availability is a key element of information security. However, information availability has not been addressed with the same enthusiasm as confidentiality and integrity because availability is impacted by many variables which cannot easily be controlled. The principal goal of this research is to characterize information availability in detail and investigate how effective enterprise security policy can ensure availability.

Variations On U-Shaped Learning, Lorenzo Carlucci, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber, Frank Stephen Aug 2006

Variations On U-Shaped Learning, Lorenzo Carlucci, Sanjay Jain, Efim Kinber, Frank Stephen

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

The paper deals with the following problem: is returning to wrong conjectures necessary to achieve full power of algorithmic learning? Returning to wrong conjectures complements the paradigm of U-shaped learning when a learner returns to old correct conjectures. We explore our problem for classical models of learning in the limit from positive data: explanatory learning (when a learner stabilizes in the limit on a correct grammar) and behaviourally correct learning (when a learner stabilizes in the limit on a sequence of correct grammars representing the target concept). In both cases we show that returning to wrong conjectures is necessary to …

Chainability And Hemmingsen's Theorem, Paul Bankston Aug 2006

Chainability And Hemmingsen's Theorem, Paul Bankston

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

On the surface, the definitions of chainability and Lebesgue covering dimension ⩽1 are quite similar as covering properties. Using the ultracoproduct construction for compact Hausdorff spaces, we explore the assertion that the similarity is only skin deep. In the case of dimension, there is a theorem of E. Hemmingsen that gives us a first-order lattice-theoretic characterization. We show that no such characterization is possible for chainability, by proving that if κ is any infinite cardinal and AA is a lattice base for a nondegenerate continuum, then AA is elementarily equivalent to a lattice base for a continuum Y …

Social Network Dynamics For Open Source Software Projects, Y. Long, Keng Siau Aug 2006

Social Network Dynamics For Open Source Software Projects, Y. Long, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Drawing on social network theories and previous studies, this research is an initial effort to explore the dynamics of the social network structure in Open Source Software (OSS) teams. Three projects were selected from SourceForge.net in term of their similarities as well as their differences. Monthly data were extracted from the bug tracking system in order to achieve a longitudinal view of the interaction pattern of each project. Social network analysis was used to generate the indices of network structure. The finding suggests that the interaction pattern of OSS projects evolves from a single hub at the beginning to a …

A Swarm-Based Model For Increasing Impulse Shopping In Supermarkets, Zeehan-Ul-Hassan Usmani Aug 2006

A Swarm-Based Model For Increasing Impulse Shopping In Supermarkets, Zeehan-Ul-Hassan Usmani

Theses and Dissertations

In today's supermarket multi-billion dollar industry, impulse shopping accounts for 2 out of 3 purchases. The phenomenon is so prominent that some consider high levels of it to be a disorder in the same group as Pyromania (the impulse to burn things) and Kleptomania (the impulse to steal). Despite the current situation, most retail stores attempt to benefit from the fact that people are impulsive in nature as a way to maximize their profits. In order to improve on current levels of sales, retail stores and supermarkets need to look at out-of-the-box to solutions that may, at first, not appear …

A Hybrid Architecture Combining Reactive Plan Execution And Reactive Learning, Samin Karim, Liz Sonenberg, Ah-Hwee Tan Aug 2006

A Hybrid Architecture Combining Reactive Plan Execution And Reactive Learning, Samin Karim, Liz Sonenberg, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Developing software agents has been complicated by the problem of how knowledge should be represented and used. Many researchers have identified that agents need not require the use of complex representations, but in many cases suffice to use “the world” as their representation. However, the problem of introspection, both by the agents themselves and by (human) domain experts, requires a knowledge representation with a higher level of abstraction that is more ‘understandable’. Learning and adaptation in agents has traditionally required knowledge to be represented at an arbitrary, low-level of abstraction. We seek to create an agent that has the capability …

Use Of A Classroom Response System To Enhance Classroom Interactivity, Keng Siau, H. Sheng, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Classroom interactivity is a critical component of teaching and learning. This paper reports on the use of a classroom response system to enhance classroom interactivity in a systems analysis and design course. The success of the project was assessed using both quantitative and qualitative data. A pretest/posttest design was used to examine the effects of a classroom respons system on interactivity. The results show that a classroom response system can significantly improve classroom interactivity. Qualitative data was also collected to identify the strengths and weaknesses of using a classroom response system to enhance classroom interaction. Based on the quantitative and …

Collaborative Image Retrieval Via Regularized Metric Learning, Luo Si, Rong Jin, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu Aug 2006

Collaborative Image Retrieval Via Regularized Metric Learning, Luo Si, Rong Jin, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In content-based image retrieval (CBIR), relevant images are identified based on their similarities to query images. Most CBIR algorithms are hindered by the semantic gap between the low-level image features used for computing image similarity and the high-level semantic concepts conveyed in images. One way to reduce the semantic gap is to utilize the log data of users' feedback that has been collected by CBIR systems in history, which is also called “collaborative image retrieval.” In this paper, we present a novel metric learning approach, named “regularized metric learning,” for collaborative image retrieval, which learns a distance metric by exploring …

Learning The Unified Kernel Machines For Classification, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu, Edward Y. Chang Aug 2006

Learning The Unified Kernel Machines For Classification, Steven C. H. Hoi, Michael R. Lyu, Edward Y. Chang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Kernel machines have been shown as the state-of-the-art learning techniques for classification. In this paper, we propose a novel general framework of learning the Unified Kernel Machines (UKM) from both labeled and unlabeled data. Our proposed framework integrates supervised learning, semi-supervised kernel learning, and active learning in a unified solution. In the suggested framework, we particularly focus our attention on designing a new semi-supervised kernel learning method, i.e., Spectral Kernel Learning (SKL), which is built on the principles of kernel target alignment and unsupervised kernel design. Our algorithm is related to an equivalent quadratic programming problem that can be efficiently …

An Energy-Efficient And Access Latency Optimized Indexing Scheme For Wireless Data Broadcast, Yuxia Yao, Xueyan Tang, Ee Peng Lim, Aixin Sun Aug 2006

An Energy-Efficient And Access Latency Optimized Indexing Scheme For Wireless Data Broadcast, Yuxia Yao, Xueyan Tang, Ee Peng Lim, Aixin Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Data broadcast is an attractive data dissemination method in mobile environments. To improve energy efficiency, existing air indexing schemes for data broadcast have focused on reducing tuning time only, i.e., the duration that a mobile client stays active in data accesses. On the other hand, existing broadcast scheduling schemes have aimed at reducing access latency through nonflat data broadcast to improve responsiveness only. Not much work has addressed the energy efficiency and responsiveness issues concurrently. This paper proposes an energy-efficient indexing scheme called MHash that optimizes tuning time and access latency in an integrated fashion. MHash reduces tuning time by …

Bias And Controversy: Beyond The Statistical Deviation, Hady W. Lauw, Ee Peng Lim, Ke Wang Aug 2006

Bias And Controversy: Beyond The Statistical Deviation, Hady W. Lauw, Ee Peng Lim, Ke Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we investigate how deviation in evaluation activities may reveal bias on the part of reviewers and controversy on the part of evaluated objects. We focus on a 'data-centric approach' where the evaluation data is assumed to represent the ground truth'. The standard statistical approaches take evaluation and deviation at face value. We argue that attention should be paid to the subjectivity of evaluation, judging the evaluation score not just on 'what is being said' (deviation), but also on 'who says it' (reviewer) as well as on 'whom it is said about' (object). Furthermore, we observe that bias …

Using Mobile Technology In Education: Perspectives Of Students And Instructors, H. Sheng, F. Nah, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Mobile technology has the tremendous potential in supporting and improving education and its delivery. As a new phenomenon that is gaining popularity, the values of mobile technology in education need to be better researched and understood. In this research, we used the Value-Focused Thinking approach to interview students and instructors to identify the values of education that are enabled by mobile technology. These values are represented in the form of a means-ends objective network that not only captures the values of education facilitated by mobile technology but also depicts the relationships between these values. The values of education enabled by …

An Experimental Study On U-Commerce Adoption: The Impact Of Personalization And Privacy Concerns, H. Sheng, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Keng Siau Aug 2006

An Experimental Study On U-Commerce Adoption: The Impact Of Personalization And Privacy Concerns, H. Sheng, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

U-commerce represents “anytime, anywhere” commerce, which is believed to be the ultimate form of commerce. Ucommerce can provide a high level of personalization, which can bring additional benefits and values to customers. However, despite these promises and potential benefits, customers’ privacy is a major concern and obstacle to the adoption of ucommerce. As customers’ intention to adopt u-commerce is based on the aggregate effect of perceived benefits and risk exposure (e.g., privacy concerns), this research examines how personalization and context can impact on customers’ perceived benefits and privacy concerns, and how this aggregated effect in turn affects u-commerce adoption intention. …

Understanding Intrinsic Factors Influencing Benefit Maximization Of Is Usage, Brenda Eschenbrenner, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This research uses the Repertory Grid technique to understand intrinsic factors influencing benefit maximization of IS usage. The results show that domain-relevant skills, task motivation, cognitive/work style attributes, individual characteristics (identified as creativity traits) and personal characteristics (identified as innovativeness traits) influence benefit maximization of IS usage. The findings not only provide insights on ways to increase quality of IS usage in organizations but are also helpful for identifying approaches that foster attributes leading to increased benefit realization from IS usage.

Two Energy Efficient Algorithms For Tracking Objects In A Sensor Network, Arvind Rapaka, Sanjay Kumar Madria Jul 2006

Two Energy Efficient Algorithms For Tracking Objects In A Sensor Network, Arvind Rapaka, Sanjay Kumar Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

We propose two energy efficient algorithms for locating a target object moving in an area covered by a wireless ad hoc network. The first algorithm developed conserve energy by efficiently identifying sensor nodes, as Home Nodes, and use only local messages between neighboring nodes to follow the trail of the object. Since we avoid the long-range transmission and maximize the localization, the algorithms reduce the communication cost. The dynamic nature of the second algorithm exploits the predefined parameters such as the object velocity. Our algorithm represents query shipping against the conventional data shipping as a means to reduce the amount …

A Constructive Incremental Learning Algorithm For Binary Classification Tasks, Christophe G. Giraud-Carrier, Tony R. Martinez Jul 2006

A Constructive Incremental Learning Algorithm For Binary Classification Tasks, Christophe G. Giraud-Carrier, Tony R. Martinez

Faculty Publications

This paper presents i-AA1*, a constructive, incremental learning algorithm for a special class of weightless, self-organizing networks. In i-AA1*, learning consists of adapting the nodes’ functions and the network’s overall topology as each new training pattern is presented. Provided the training data is consistent, computational complexity is low and prior factual knowledge may be used to “prime” the network and improve its predictive accuracy. Empirical generalization results on both toy problems and more realistic tasks demonstrate promise.

Vectorization Of Raster Images Using B-Spline Surfaces, Curtis A. Armstrong Jul 2006

Vectorization Of Raster Images Using B-Spline Surfaces, Curtis A. Armstrong

Theses and Dissertations

A system has been developed for converting raster images into vector images. Raster images are made of pixels, while vector images are made of smoother shapes. The image is first segmented, and the segments are layered. The boundary of each segment is approximated with a periodic B-Spline curve. This curve is then used to create a B-Spline surface to approximate the interior of the segment. The algorithm fits each B-Spline to the colors of the image using least-squares approximation. The color and shape of each B-Spline surface are extrapolated into regions behind other segments. The result is a vector image …

Characterizing Dynamic Power And Data Rate Policies For Wirelessusb Networks, Jeffrey L. Barlow Jul 2006

Characterizing Dynamic Power And Data Rate Policies For Wirelessusb Networks, Jeffrey L. Barlow

Theses and Dissertations

Wireless communication is increasingly ubiquitous. However, mobility depends intrinsically on battery life. Power can be conserved at the Media Access Control (MAC) layer by intelligently adjusting transmission power level and data rate encoding. WirelessUSB is a low-power, low-latency wireless technology developed by Cypress Semiconductor Corporation for human interface devices such as keyboards and mice. WirelessUSB devices conserve power by employing power-efficient hardware, dynamic power level adjustment and dynamic data rate adjustment. We characterize the effects on power consumption of dynamically adjusting node power using two dynamic power negotiation techniques as well as two reactive techniques. We also characterize the effects …

A Genetic Algorithm Approach To Solve For Multiple Solutions Of Inverse Kinematics Using Adaptive Niching And Clustering, Saleh Tabandeh, Christopher M. Clark, William Melek Jul 2006

A Genetic Algorithm Approach To Solve For Multiple Solutions Of Inverse Kinematics Using Adaptive Niching And Clustering, Saleh Tabandeh, Christopher M. Clark, William Melek

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Inverse kinematics is a nonlinear problem that may have multiple solutions. A Genetic Algorithm(GA) for solving the inverse kinematics of a serial robotic manipulator is presented. The algorithm is capable of finding multiple solutions of the inverse kinematics through niching methods. Despite the fact that the number and position of solutions in the search space depends on the the position and orientation of the end-effector as well as the configuration of the robot, the number of GA parameters that must be set by a user are limited to a minimum through the use of an adaptive niching method. The only …

Cooperation-Based Clustering For Profit-Maximizing Organizational Design, Christophe G. Giraud-Carrier, Kevin Seppi, Nghia Tran, Sean C. Warnick Jul 2006

Cooperation-Based Clustering For Profit-Maximizing Organizational Design, Christophe G. Giraud-Carrier, Kevin Seppi, Nghia Tran, Sean C. Warnick

Faculty Publications

This paper shows how the notion of value of cooperation, a measure of the percentage of a firm’s profits due strictly to the cooperative effects among the goods it sells, can be used to analyze the relative economic advantage afforded by various organizational structures. The value of cooperation is computed from transactions data by solving a regression problem to fit the parameters of the consumer demand function, and then simulating the resulting profit-maximizing dynamic system under various organizational structures. A hierarchical agglomerative clustering algorithm can be applied to reveal the optimal organizational substructure.

Particle Swarm Optimization In Dynamic Pricing, Christopher K. Monson, Patrick B. Mullen, Kevin Seppi, Sean C. Warnick Jul 2006

Particle Swarm Optimization In Dynamic Pricing, Christopher K. Monson, Patrick B. Mullen, Kevin Seppi, Sean C. Warnick

Faculty Publications

Dynamic pricing is a real-time machine learning problem with scarce prior data and a concrete learning cost. While the Kalman Filter can be employed to track hidden demand parameters and extensions to it can facilitate exploration for faster learning, the exploratory nature of Particle Swarm Optimization makes it a natural choice for the dynamic pricing problem. We compare both the Kalman Filter and existing particle swarm adaptations for dynamic and/or noisy environments with a novel approach that time-decays each particle's previous best value; this new strategy provides more graceful and effective transitions between exploitation and exploration, a necessity in the …

A Microformatted Registry Alternative, Thomas R. Warne Jul 2006

A Microformatted Registry Alternative, Thomas R. Warne

Theses and Dissertations

To effectively use Web services, providers and consumers need to be connected by a registry. Several registry solutions exist today, including UDDI and WSIL. Also, many organizations simply use Web pages to list available Web services and their descriptions. This research describes a microformat for representing Web service description documents. These microformatted documents can be converted back to the original format for use by machines. They can also contain additional information, making them more useful to people. A registry, allowing indexing and searching of microformatted service descriptions, is also described. The benefits of this solution include: using existing standards; allowing …

Local Url Resolution Protocol, Joseph Clark Ekstrom Jul 2006

Local Url Resolution Protocol, Joseph Clark Ekstrom

Theses and Dissertations

DOGMA is a resource management system designed to create a supercomputer like system from unused desktop computers. Scalability is one of the challenges faced by DOGMA because it uses a strict client/server architecture. Distributing large files over a client server architecture is problematic since available network bandwidth is limited. The Local URL Resolution Protocol(LURP) addresses this problem for environments where there are high node densities. LURP implements a locality aware Peer-to-Peer file distribution model to increase the speed of file distribution while reducing the overall network congestion.
