Minimum Latency Broadcasting In Multi-Radio Multi-Channel Multi-Rate Wireless Meshes, Junaid Qadir, Archan Misra, Chun Tung Chou Sep 2006

Minimum Latency Broadcasting In Multi-Radio Multi-Channel Multi-Rate Wireless Meshes, Junaid Qadir, Archan Misra, Chun Tung Chou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We address the problem of minimizing the worst-case broadcast delay in multi-radio multi-channel multi-rate (MR2-MC) wireless mesh networks (WMN). The problem of 'efficient' broadcast in such networks is especially challenging due to the numerous interrelated decisions that have to be made. The multi-rate transmission capability of WMN nodes, interference between wireless transmissions, and the hardness of optimal channel assignment adds complexity to our considered problem. We present four heuristic algorithms to solve the minimum latency broadcast problem for such settings and show that the 'best' performing algorithms usually adapt themselves to the available radio interfaces and channels. We also study …

Masking Page Reference Patterns In Encryption Databases On Untrusted Storage, Xi Ma, Hwee Hwa Pang, Kian-Lee Tan Sep 2006

Masking Page Reference Patterns In Encryption Databases On Untrusted Storage, Xi Ma, Hwee Hwa Pang, Kian-Lee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To support ubiquitous computing, the underlying data have to be persistent and available anywhere-anytime. The data thus have to migrate from devices that are local to individual computers, to shared storage volumes that are accessible over open network. This potentially exposes the data to heightened security risks. In particular, the activity on a database exhibits regular page reference patterns that could help attackers learn logical links among physical pages and then launch additional attacks. We propose two countermeasures to mitigate the risk of attacks initiated through analyzing the shared storage server’s activity for those page patterns. The first countermeasure relocates …

Coverage Testing In A Production Software Development Environment, Kent Bortz Aug 2006

Coverage Testing In A Production Software Development Environment, Kent Bortz

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This project proposes that current testing methodologies used by standard testing tools are not sufficient to ensure sufficient test coverage. Test tools provide important and irreplaceable test data but are not capable of guaranteeing high percentage of path exposure (coverage). If the code path includes loop statements like, "if" or "when" then the number of paths to test grows exponentially. The growth of the code path becomes exponential when nested decision statements are considered. The most common methodology used in today's testing environment verifies each line of code but does not verify all path combination. Testing per line of code …

Vision-Based Rendering: Using Computational Stereo To Actualize Ibr View Synthesis, Kevin L. Steele

Theses and Dissertations

Computer graphics imagery (CGI) has enabled many useful applications in training, defense, and entertainment. One such application, CGI simulation, is a real-time system that allows users to navigate through and interact with a virtual rendition of an existing environment. Creating such systems is difficult, but particularly burdensome is the task of designing and constructing the internal representation of the simulation content. Authoring this content on a computer usually requires great expertise and many man-hours of labor. Computational stereo and image-based rendering offer possibilities to automatically create simulation content without user assistance. However, these technologies have largely been limited to creating …

Tabu Search For Optimization Of Military Supply Distribution, Ben Weber, Brett Bojduj, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The dynamic and non-hierarchical nature of the military domain presents a challenge for traditional supply chain optimization. Flow networks and simulation techniques have been applied to the military distribution problem, but are unable to provide time-definite delivery to customers. Recently, optimization approaches have been independently applied towards strategic and operational levels of planning. However, decomposing military distribution into separate problems forces optimization techniques to utilize imprecise data. The size of the military distribution problem has prevented optimization techniques from providing end-to-end planning capabilities. This paper presents a Tabu Search algorithm for simultaneously solving strategic and operational levels of planning. The …

Computer Science Publications

The advent of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) paradigm and increasing use of Web Services (WS) implies that the future will see a large number of services transferred between providers and consumers, using many applications or agents working on behalf of humans. Discovering and using the services is the easy part. Negotiating and selecting the best services from amongst the plethora of similar ones, depending on their cost and quality, is the challenging issue. However, existing WS-I standards neither cater to provision of Service Level Agreements (SLAs), nor their exchange between parties. These standards are confined merely to WS description (WSDL). …

Beosh: The Beowulf Cluster Shell, Mason E. Vail Aug 2006

Beosh: The Beowulf Cluster Shell, Mason E. Vail

Computer Science Graduate Projects and Theses

The Beowulf Cluster Shell (beosh) has been created to provide cluster users with a Single System Image (SSI) by distributing individual commands or pipelined jobs over available nodes without requiring the user to be aware of where or how jobs are distributed. Job control of distributed jobs enables management of multiple concurrent remote jobs from a single shell session. In addition to SSI features, beosh supports parallel job execution through pdsh, a commonly used parallel-only cluster shell. In either distributed or parallel mode, beosh can limit nodes to those reserved through a system like the Portable Batch System (PBS).

Image Up-Sampling Using The Discrete Wavelet Transform, Laleh Asgharian Aug 2006

Image Up-Sampling Using The Discrete Wavelet Transform, Laleh Asgharian

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Image up-sampling is an effective technique, useful in today's digital image processing applications and rendering devices. In image up-sampling, an image is enhanced from a lower resolution to a higher resolution with the degree of enhancement depending upon application requirements. It is known that the traditional interpolation based approaches for up-sampling, such as the Bilinear or Bicubic interpolations, blur the resultant images along edges and image features. Furthermore, in color imagery, these interpolation-based up-sampling methods may have color infringing artifacts in the areas where the images contain sharp edges and fine textures. We present an interesting up-sampling algorithm based on …

Protecting information against unauthorized access is a key issue in information system security. Advanced access control models and mechanisms have now become necessary for applications and systems due to emerging acts, such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) is a viable alternative to traditional discretionary and mandatory access control. RBAC has been shown to be cost effective and is being employed in various application domains on account of its characteristics: rich specification, policy neutrality, separation of duty relations, principle of least privilege, and ease of management. Existing RBAC approaches …

Learning State And Action Space Hierarchies For Reinforcement Learning Using Action-Dependent Partitioning, Mehran Asadi Aug 2006

Learning State And Action Space Hierarchies For Reinforcement Learning Using Action-Dependent Partitioning, Mehran Asadi

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Autonomous systems are often dicult to program. Reinforcement learning (RL) is an attractive alternative, as it allows the agent to learn behavior on the basis of sparse, delayed reward signals provided only when the agent reaches desired goals. Recent attempts to address the dimensionality of RL have turned to principled ways of exploiting temporal abstraction, where decisions are not required at each step, but rather invoke the execution of temporally-extended activities which follow their own policies un- til termination. This leads naturally to hierarchical control architectures and associated learning algorithms. This dissertation reviews several approaches to temporal abstraction and hierarchical …

Context Aware Energy Conservation In Pervasive Computing Environments, Prathiba Joseph Aug 2006

Context Aware Energy Conservation In Pervasive Computing Environments, Prathiba Joseph

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Extending battery lifetime is one of the most critical and challenging problems in mobile systems. When the mobile device sounds a low battery alarm, the user is given an ultimatum to quickly find a power source or suspend work. The greatest utility of mobile devices is their ability to be used anywhere, and at anytime. But power limitations of these devices seem to hinder this goal. The ever-growing needs of mobile users for increased lifetime of wireless devices imply that emerging wireless systems must be more energy-efficient than ever before. Cyber foraging or remote resource exploitation may be an efficient …

Recent advances in low-power sensing devices coupled with widespread availability of wireless ad-hoc networks, has fueled the development of sensor networks. These senor networks have various applications such as to monitor conditions at different locations (temperature, pressure, rainfall, vibrations etc.,), tracking of objects and so on. Each device is equipped with an energy source (usually with a battery), memory, CPU and communication bandwidth, which is severely constrained. Hence each sensor network is comprised of hardware for sensing, software for communication and computational algorithms. Spatial queries are commonly applied to sensor network, for example: "Find the highest temperature sensed in a …
