Intelligent, Pervasive And Context-Aware Promotion Delivery Framework For Wireless Mobile Devices, Karthik Harihar

Theses and Dissertations

Mobile devices are now powerful systems and are the main vehicles for m- commerce. Market research predicts enormous potential for m-commerce applications and services [9], [10], [11], [12]. Unique features such as portability, location-awareness and personalization make mobile devices effective tools for targeted advertising. Several mobile marketing frameworks have been designed that deliver promotions based on location information and user preferences [3], [4], [5]. These frameworks have several drawbacks that need to be addressed in order to be effective. The aim of this thesis is to research a simple and efficient framework for targeted and personalized advertising. This work presents …

Accommodating Instance Heterogeneities In Database Integration, Ee Peng Lim, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang Nov 2004

Accommodating Instance Heterogeneities In Database Integration, Ee Peng Lim, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A complete data integration solution can be viewed as an iterative process that consists of three phases, namely analysis, derivation and evolution. The entire process is similar to a software development process with the target application being the derivation rules for the integrated databases. In many cases, data integration requires several iterations of refining the local-to-global database mapping rules before a stable set of rules can be obtained. In particular, the mapping rules, as well as the data model and query model for the integrated databases have to cope with poor data quality in local databases, ongoing local database updates …

Corrective Maintenance Optimization In An Air Force, Hoong Chuin Lau, K. Y. Neo, W. C. Wan Nov 2004

Corrective Maintenance Optimization In An Air Force, Hoong Chuin Lau, K. Y. Neo, W. C. Wan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Successful military mission planning and execution depend critically on equipment serviceability and resupply. Due to the stochastic nature of demands, the forecast of optimal spares and resources needed to guarantee the level of serviceability is a complex problem, especially in a multi-echelon setting. In this paper, we propose a decision-support concept and software tool known as Corrective Maintenance Optimizer (CMO) that helps to optimize system availability, through proper allocation of spare parts, both strategically and operationally.

Spatial Queries In Wireless Broadcast Systems, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Dik Lun Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Owing to the advent of wireless networking and personal digital devices, information systems in the era of mobile computing are expected to be able to handle a tremendous amount of traffic and service requests from the users. Wireless data broadcast, thanks to its high scalability, is particularly suitable for meeting such a challenge. Indexing techniques have been developed for wireless data broadcast systems in order to conserve the scarce power resources in mobile clients. However, most of the previous studies do not take into account the impact of location information of users. In this paper, we address the issues of …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We study a repairable item inventory system under limited repair capacity and nonstationary Poisson demands, motivated by corrective maintenance of military equipment. Our goal is to minimize the cost of both spare and repair resource allocation. We propose an efficient analytical model that combines optimization modeling and queuing theory.

Anonymous Secure Routing In Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks, Bo Zhu, Zhiguo Wan, Mohan S. Kankanhalli, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng Nov 2004

Anonymous Secure Routing In Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks, Bo Zhu, Zhiguo Wan, Mohan S. Kankanhalli, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Although there are a large number of papers on secure routing in mobile ad-hoc networks, only a few consider the anonymity issue. In this paper, we define more strict requirements on the anonymity and security properties of the routing protocol, and notice that previous research works only provide Weak Location Privacy and Route Anonymity, and are vulnerable to specific attacks. Therefore, we propose the Anonymous Secure Routing (ASR) protocol that can provide additional properties on anonymity, i.e. Identity Anonymity and Strong Location Privacy, and at the same time ensure the security of discovered routes against various passive and active attacks. …

A Periodic-Review Inventory Model With Application To The Continuous-Review Obsolescence Problem, Yuyue Song, Hoong Chuin Lau Nov 2004

A Periodic-Review Inventory Model With Application To The Continuous-Review Obsolescence Problem, Yuyue Song, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper we consider a stochastic-demand periodic-review inventory model with sudden obsolescence. We characterize the structure of the optimal policy and propose a dynamic programming algorithm for computing its parameters. We then utilize this algorithm to approximate the solution to the continuous-review sudden obsolescence problem with general obsolescence distribution. We prove convergence of our approximation scheme, and demonstrate it numerically against known closed-form solutions of special cases.

The D-Tree: An Index Structure For Planar Point Queries Location-Based Wireless Services, Jianliang Xu, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Dik Lun Lee Nov 2004

The D-Tree: An Index Structure For Planar Point Queries Location-Based Wireless Services, Jianliang Xu, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Dik Lun Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Location-based services (LBSs), considered as a killer application in the wireless data market, provide information based on locations specified in the queries. In this paper, we examine the indexing issue for querying location-dependent data in wireless LBSs; in particular, we focus on an important class of queries, planar point queries. To address the issues of responsiveness, energy consumption, and bandwidth contention in wireless communications, an index has to minimize the search time and maintain a small storage overhead. It is shown that the traditional point-location algorithms and spatial index structures fail to achieve either objective or both. This paper proposes …

Job Scheduling With Unfixed Availability Constraints, Hoong Chuin Lau, C. Zhang Nov 2004

Job Scheduling With Unfixed Availability Constraints, Hoong Chuin Lau, C. Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Standard scheduling theory assumes that all machines are continuously available throughout the planning horizon. In many manufacturing and service management situations however, machines need to be maintained periodically to prevent malfunctions. During the maintenance period, a machine is not available for processing jobs. Hence, a more realistic scheduling model should take into account machine maintenance activities. In this paper, we study the problem of job scheduling with unfixed availability constraints on a single machine. We first propose a preliminary classification for the scheduling problem with unfixed availability constraints based on maintenance constraints, job characteristics and objective function. We divide our …

Finding Constrained Frequent Episodes Using Minimal Occurrences, Xi Ma, Hwee Hwa Pang, Kian-Lee Tan Nov 2004

Finding Constrained Frequent Episodes Using Minimal Occurrences, Xi Ma, Hwee Hwa Pang, Kian-Lee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Recurrent combinations of events within an event sequence, known as episodes, often reveal useful information. Most of the proposed episode mining algorithms adopt an apriori-like approach that generates candidates and then calculates their support levels. Obviously, such an approach is computationally expensive. Moreover, those algorithms are capable of handling only a limited range of constraints. In this paper, we introduce two mining algorithms - episode prefix tree (EPT) and position pairs set (PPS) - based on a prefix-growth approach to overcome the above limitations. Both algorithms push constraints systematically into the mining process. Performance study shows that the proposed algorithms …

Problems With The Dartmouth Wireless Snmp Data Collection, Tristan Henderson, David Kotz Oct 2004

Problems With The Dartmouth Wireless Snmp Data Collection, Tristan Henderson, David Kotz

Computer Science Technical Reports

The original Dartmouth wireless network study used SNMP to query the college's Cisco 802.11b access points. The perl scripts that performed the SNMP queries suffered from some problems, in that they queried inappropriate SNMP values, or misunderstood the meaning of other values. This data was also used in a subsequent analysis. The same scripts were used to collect data for a subsequent study of another wireless network. This document outlines these problems and indicates which of the data collected by the original scripts may be invalid.

Composing A Well-Typed Region, Chris Hawblitzel, Heng Huang, Lea Wittie Oct 2004

Composing A Well-Typed Region, Chris Hawblitzel, Heng Huang, Lea Wittie

Computer Science Technical Reports

Efficient low-level systems need more control over memory than safe high-level languages usually provide. In particular, safe languages usually prohibit explicit deallocation, in order to prevent dangling pointers. Regions provide one safe deallocation mechanism; indeed, many region calculi have appeared recently, each with its own set of operations and often complex rules. This paper encodes regions from lower-level typed primitives (linear memory, coercions, and delayed types), so that programmers can design their own region operations and rules.

Disk Based Model Checking, Tonglaga Bao Oct 2004

Disk Based Model Checking, Tonglaga Bao

Theses and Dissertations

Disk based model checking does not receive much attention in the model checking field becasue of its costly time overhead. In this thesis, we present a new disk based algorithm that can get close to or faster verification speed than a RAM based algorithm that has enough memory to complete its verification. This algorithm also outperforms Stern and Dill's original disk based algorithm. The algorithm partitions the state space to several files, and swaps files into and out of memory during verification. Compared with the RAM only algorithm, the new algoritm reduces hash table insertion time by reducing the cost …

Unfolding Smooth Prismatoids, Nadia Benbernou, Patricia Cahn, Joseph O'Rourke Oct 2004

Unfolding Smooth Prismatoids, Nadia Benbernou, Patricia Cahn, Joseph O'Rourke

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We define a notion for unfolding smooth, ruled surfaces, and prove that every smooth prismatoid (the convex hull of two smooth curves lying in parallel planes), has a nonoverlapping “volcano unfolding.” These unfoldings keep the base intact, unfold the sides outward, splayed around the base, and attach the top to the tip of some side rib. Our result answers a question for smooth prismatoids whose analog for polyhedral prismatoids remains unsolved.

Automated Motion Synthesis For Virtual Choreography, Gazihan Alankus, A. Alphan Bayazit, O. Burchan Bayazit Oct 2004

Automated Motion Synthesis For Virtual Choreography, Gazihan Alankus, A. Alphan Bayazit, O. Burchan Bayazit

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

In this paper, we present a technique to automati-cally synthesize dancing moves for arbitrary songs. Our current implementation is for virtual characters, but it is easy to use the same algorithms for entertainer robots, such as robotic dancers, which fits very well to this year’s conference theme. Our technique is based on analyzing a musical tune (can be a song or melody) and synthesizing a motion for the virtual character where the character’s movement synchronizes to the musical beats. In order to analyze beats of the tune, we developed a fast and novel algorithm. Our motion synthesis algorithm analyze library …

Implementation And Comparison Of Denial Of Service Attack Techniques, Khaled M. Elleithy, Drazen Blagovic, Wang K. Cheng, Paul Sideleau

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

A denial of service attack (DOS) is any type of attack on a networking structure to disable a server from servicing its clients. Attacks range from sending millions of requests to a server in an attempt to slow it down, flooding a server with large packets of invalid data, to sending requests with an invalid of spoofed IP address. In this paper we show the implementation and analysis of three main types of attack: Ping of Death, TCP SYN Flood, and Distributed DOS. The Ping of Death attack will be simulated against a Microsoft Windows 95 computer. The TCP SYN …

Vision-Based Human Directed Robot Guidance, Richard B. Arthur Oct 2004

Vision-Based Human Directed Robot Guidance, Richard B. Arthur

Theses and Dissertations

This paper describes methods to track a user-defined point in the vision of a robot as it drives forward. This tracking allows a robot to keep itself directed at that point while driving so that it can get to that user-defined point. I develop and present two new multi-scale algorithms for tracking arbitrary points between two frames of video, as well as through a video sequence. The multi-scale algorithms do not use the traditional pyramid image, but instead use a data structure called an integral image (also known as a summed area table). The first algorithm uses edge-detection to track …

Performance Evaluation Of A Resource Discovery Service, Jue Wang Oct 2004

Performance Evaluation Of A Resource Discovery Service, Jue Wang

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

In a pervasive computing environment, the number and variety of resources (services, devices, and contextual information resources) make it necessary for applications to accurately discover the best ones quickly. Thus a resource-discovery service, which locates specific resources and establishes network connections as better resources become available, is necessary for those applications. The performance of the resource-discovery service is important when the applications are in a dynamic and mobile environment. In this thesis, however, we do not focus on the resource- discovery technology itself, but the evaluation of the scalability and mobility of the resource discovery module in Solar, a context …

Due to the complexity of biological systems, interpretation of data obtained by a single experimental approach can often be interpreted only if viewed from a broader context, taking into account the information obtained by many diverse techniques. The vast amount of interpreted experimental data that is now available via the internet opens the possibility of collecting the relevant pieces of information that will enable scientists to form hypotheses based on the integration of this diverse information. However, the sheer volume of data that is available makes it very difficult to select the information necessary to make a coherent model of …

Computational Approaches To The Design And Analysis Of Stability Of Polypeptide Multilayer Thin Films, Bin Zheng Oct 2004

Computational Approaches To The Design And Analysis Of Stability Of Polypeptide Multilayer Thin Films, Bin Zheng

Doctoral Dissertations

The focus of this research is the development of computational approaches to understanding the physical basis of layer-by-layer assembly (LBL), a key methodology of nanomanufacturing. The results provided detailed information on structure which cannot be obtained directly by experiments.

The model systems chosen for study are polypeptide chains. Reasons for this are that polypeptides are no less polyelectrolytes than the more usual polyions, and one can control the primary structure of a polypeptide on a residue-by-residue basis using modern synthetic methods. Moreover, as peptides constitute one of the four major classes of biological macromolecules, research in this direction is expected …

Sense -Based Text Classification By Semantic Hierarchy Representation, Xiaogang Peng Oct 2004

Sense -Based Text Classification By Semantic Hierarchy Representation, Xiaogang Peng

Doctoral Dissertations

Automatic classification of web pages is an effective way to facilitate the process of retrieving information from the Internet. Currently, two major classification methods are used in this area: keyword-based classification and sense-based classification. For keyword-based classification, keywords often have different semantic meanings, and the correct keyword matching is largely based on using exactly the same keywords. Thus, the classification results of keyword-based classification are not always satisfying. Many sense-based classification algorithms and systems have been presented, but they pay little attention to the relationship between senses. In this dissertation, we present a method to automatically classify documents based on …

Structuring Home Video By Snippet Detection And Pattern Parsing, Zailiang Pan, Chong-Wah Ngo Oct 2004

Structuring Home Video By Snippet Detection And Pattern Parsing, Zailiang Pan, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hand-held camcorders have been popularly used in capturing and documenting daily lives. Nonetheless, searching for personal memories in home videos is still a laborious task. This paper describes novel approaches in detecting snippets and patterns in home videos for content indexing. To deal with the fact that most shots are long and with handshake artifacts, a motion analysis algorithm based on Kalman filter and finite state machine is proposed to decompose videos into tables of snippets. Each snippet is represented by a set of moving and static patterns. The moving patterns are automatically detected and tracked, while the static patterns …

An Algorithm For Locating Fundamental Frequency (F0) Markers In Speech, Princy Dikshit Oct 2004

An Algorithm For Locating Fundamental Frequency (F0) Markers In Speech, Princy Dikshit

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Speech has been the principal form of human communication since it began to evolve at least one hundred thousand years ago. Speech is produced by vibrations of the vocal cords. The rate of vibration of the cords is called fundamental frequency (F0) or pitch. The objective of this thesis is to locate pitch period cycles on a cycle-by-cycle basis. The complexity in identifying pitch cycles stems from the highly irregular nature of human speech. Dynamic programming is used to combine two sources of information for pitch period marking. One source of information is the "local" information corresponding to the location …

Bottleneck Analysis Of Cports, Sreekalyana Chakravarthy Kajuluri Oct 2004

Bottleneck Analysis Of Cports, Sreekalyana Chakravarthy Kajuluri

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

CPortS is a transportation logistics simulation that models the flow of military cargo through a seaport and the interaction of the cargo with the port resources and infrastructure. It provides information about the seaport's capabilities, how the cargo has been handled, how many days the cargo took to clear a particular port area, and the overall throughput of the seaport. The model is highly data intensive since it models the huge traffic in a real seaport.

Bottlenecks reduce system performance. Systems that are traffic intensive or simulations of systems, which are data intensive, encounter bottlenecks, which reduce their performance. In …

Hierarchical Hybrid Multicast An End System Multicast Algorithm Approach, Guillermo Loaisiga Oct 2004

Hierarchical Hybrid Multicast An End System Multicast Algorithm Approach, Guillermo Loaisiga

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Due to the rapid development in the computer and communication technologies, the Internet is experiencing an increasing demand of high-speed, real-time distributed applications, such as live streaming multimedia, videoconferencing, distributed simulations, and multiparty games. Multicast is an efficient transmission mechanism to support these applications. Historically, IP Multicast (IPM) has provided multicast support with well-known benefits, especially in bandwidth savings. However, it has experienced little deployment due to economic and architectural limitations.

Overlay multicast holds promise for the implementation of large scale Internet multicast services. An overlay network is a virtual topology constructed on top of the Internet infrastructure. This concept …

Automatic Image Orientation Determination With Natural Image Statistics, Siwei Lyu Oct 2004

Automatic Image Orientation Determination With Natural Image Statistics, Siwei Lyu

Computer Science Technical Reports

In this paper, we propose a new method for automatically determining image orientations. This method is based on a set of natural image statistics collected from a multi-scale multi-orientation image decomposition (e.g., wavelets). From these statistics, a two-stage hierarchal classification with multiple binary SVM classifiers is employed to de- termine image orientation. The proposed method is evaluated and compared to existing methods with experiments performed on 18040 natural images, where it showed promising performance.
