On Security Notions For Steganalysis, Kisik Chang, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao, Sangjin Lee, Hyungjun Kim, Jongin Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

There have been some achievements in steganalysis recently. Many people have been making strides in steganalysis. They have approached steganalysis from different angles; from information theory to complexity theory. Anderson gave a possibility that there is a provable secure steganographic system, but there had not been complexity theoretical approaches for years. In 2002, Katzenbeisser and Petitcolas defined the conditional security of steganography and gave a possibility for a practical, provable secure steganography for the first time, and Hopper et al. introduced a provable secure steganographic algorithm in the sense of complexity theory. Chang et al. also tried to define the …

U-Commerce: Emerging Trends And Research Issues, H. Galanxhi-Janaqi, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Ubiquitous commerce or u-commerce is the combination of traditional e-commerce and wireless, television, voice and silent commerce. U-commerce implies ubiquity, universality, uniqueness and unison. It is not a replacement for other types of commerce, but an extension of them. While bringing many benefits, there are challenges and impediments to overcome. Research is needed to assess the value of u-commerce and to address its related issues and challenges. Questions that need to be addressed are: What is the value of u-commerce? What are the ways to maximize the benefits and value of u-commerce? Is it the right technology and what directions …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Digital libraries have been rather successful in supporting learning activities by providing learners with access to information and knowledge. However, this level of support is passive to learners and interactive and collaborative learning cannot be easily achieved. In this paper, we study how digital libraries could be extended to serve a more active role in collaborative learning activities. We focus on developing new services to support a common type of learning activity, field study, in a geospatial context. We propose the concept of personal project space that allows individuals to work in their personalized environment with a mix of private …

Automatic Model Structuring From Text Using Biomedical Ontology, Joshi R., Li X., Ramachandaran S., Tze-Yun Leong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Bayesian Networks and Influence Diagrams are effective methods for structuring clinical problems. Constructing a relevant structure without the numerical probabilities in itself is a challenging task. In addition, due to the rapid rate of innovations and new findings in the biomedical domain, constructing a relevant graphical model becomes even more challenging. Building a model structure from text with minimum intervention from domain experts and minimum training examples has always been a challenge for the researchers. In the biomedical domain, numerous advances have been made which may make this dream a possibility now. We are currently trying to build a general …

Method For Identifying Individuals, Manoj Thulasidas Dec 2004

Method For Identifying Individuals, Manoj Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A method and system for identifying a subject comprises obtaining a digitised recording of an electrocardiogram measurement of the subject to be identified, the digitised recording being a cyclic waveform having a peak amplitude. The digitised recording is normalised to reduce variations due to physiological effects, and the normalised recording is processed to determine a feature vector in the frequency domain. The distance between the determined feature vector and a predetermined feature vector is measured to identify the subject.

High Performance P300 Speller For Brain-Computer Interface, Cuntai Guan, Manoj Thulasidas, Jiankang Wu Dec 2004

High Performance P300 Speller For Brain-Computer Interface, Cuntai Guan, Manoj Thulasidas, Jiankang Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

P300 speller is a communication tool with which one can input texts or commands to a computer by thought. The amplitude of the P300 evoked potential is inversely proportional to the probability of infrequent or task-related stimulus. In existing P300 spellers, rows and columns of a matrix are intensified successively and randomly, resulting in a stimulus frequency of 1/N (N is the number of rows or columns of the matrix). We propose a new paradigm to display each single character randomly and individually (therefore reducing the stimulus frequency to 1/(N*N)). On-line experiments showed that this new speller significantly improved the …

Secure Hardware Enhanced Myproxy: A Ph.D. Thesis Proposal, John Marchesini, Sean Smith Nov 2004

Secure Hardware Enhanced Myproxy: A Ph.D. Thesis Proposal, John Marchesini, Sean Smith

Computer Science Technical Reports

In 1976, Whitfield Diffie and Martin Hellman demonstrated how "New Directions In Cryptography" could enable secure information exchange between parties that do not share secrets. In order for public key cryptography to work in modern distributed environments, we need an infrastructure for finding and trusting other parties' public keys (i.e., a PKI). A number of useful applications become possible with PKI. While the applications differ in how they use keys (e.g., S/MIME uses the key for message encryption and signing, while client-side SSL uses the key for authentication), all applications share one assumption: users have keypairs. In previous work, we …

Automating The Extraction Of Domain-Specific Information From The Web-A Case Study For The Genealogical Domain, Troy L. Walker Nov 2004

Automating The Extraction Of Domain-Specific Information From The Web-A Case Study For The Genealogical Domain, Troy L. Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Current ways of finding genealogical information within the millions of pages on the Web are inadequate. In an effort to help genealogical researchers find desired information more quickly, we have developed GeneTIQS, a Genealogy Target-based Information Query System. GeneTIQS builds on ontology-based methods of data extraction to allow database-style queries on the Web. This thesis makes two main contributions to GeneTIQS. (1) It builds a framework to do generic ontology-based data extraction. (2) It develops a hybrid record separator based on Vector Space Modeling that uses both formatting clues and data clues to split pages into component records. The record …

Target-Dominant Chinese-English Machine Translation, Dan Su Nov 2004

Target-Dominant Chinese-English Machine Translation, Dan Su

Theses and Dissertations

Information exchange is increasing rapidly with the advent of globalization. As the language spoken by the most people in today's world, Chinese will play an important role in information exchange in the future. Therefore, we need an efficient and practical means to access the increasingly large volume of Chinese data. This thesis describes a target-dominant Chinese-English machine translation system, which can translate a given Chinese news sentence into English. We conjecture that we can improve the state of the art of MT using a TDMT approach. This system has participated in the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) 2004 …

Perceptual Evaluation Of Point-Based Object Representation, Paul Schwarz Nov 2004

Perceptual Evaluation Of Point-Based Object Representation, Paul Schwarz

Computer Science Honors Theses

Researchers have proposed several methods of representing three-dimensional objects in computer memory along with different methods of displaying these objects on two-dimensional computer displays. Using a polygon-based representation that linearly interpolates between a set of sample points is by far the most popular way of representing objects today, mostly because of its ability to display an object on a computer screen at a fast and consistent rate. However, as graphics hardware increases in speed, polygon-based models prove to be increasingly inefficient. Point-based representations have been proposed that consist of densely sampling some surface and using solely the samples to portray …

Does The Halting Necessary For Hardware Trace Collection Inordinately Perturb The Results?, Myles G. Watson Nov 2004

Does The Halting Necessary For Hardware Trace Collection Inordinately Perturb The Results?, Myles G. Watson

Theses and Dissertations

Processor address traces are invaluable for characterizing workloads and testing proposed memory hierarchies. Long traces are needed to exercise modern cache designs and produce meaningful results, but are difficult to collect with hardware monitors because microprocessors access memory too frequently for disks or other large storage to keep up. The small, fast buffers of the monitors fill quickly; in order to obtain long contiguous traces, the processor must be stopped while the buffer is emptied. This halting may perturb the traces collected, but this cannot be measured directly, since long uninterrupted traces cannot be collected. We make the case that …

Real-Time Image Enhancement Using Texture Synthesis, Matthew J. Sorensen Nov 2004

Real-Time Image Enhancement Using Texture Synthesis, Matthew J. Sorensen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents an approach to real-time image enhancement using texture synthesis. Traditional image enhancement techniques are typically time consuming, lack realistic detail, or do not scale well for large magnification factors.

Real-time Enhancement using Texture Synthesis (RETS) combines interpolation, classification, and patch-based texture synthesis to enhance low-resolution imagery, particularly aerial imagery. RETS uses as input a low-resolution source image and several high-resolution sample textures. The output of RETS is a high-resolution image with the structure of the source image, but with detail consistent with the high-resolution sample textures. We show that RETS can enhance large amounts of imagery in …

Synthesizing Realistic Spine Motion Using Traditional Rig Controllers, Jabbar Raisani Nov 2004

Synthesizing Realistic Spine Motion Using Traditional Rig Controllers, Jabbar Raisani

Computer Science Honors Theses

This thesis presents a specific method for simulating realistic spine motion through the use of traditional rig control objects. The spine's motion and flexibility is based on a curve as opposed to the more traditional three bone spine. This allows for a more fluid animation more closely resembling that of a spinal column. However, this setup keeps the traditional three control rig setup in order to mimic the control system of a traditional three bone spine. Currently, three bone systems are well understood by animators and the motion is easy to control. The problem with this setup is that although …

1-Hyperbolic Projection For User Interfaces, Alexander Kolliopoulos Nov 2004

1-Hyperbolic Projection For User Interfaces, Alexander Kolliopoulos

Computer Science Honors Theses

The problem of dealing with representations of information that does not fit conveniently within allotted screen space is pervasive in graphical interfaces. While there are techniques for dealing with this problem in various ways, some properties of such existing techniques are not satisfying. For example, global structure of information may be lost in favor of local focus, or information may not be mapped into a rectangular area. The 1-hyperbolic interface is proposed to deal with some of these deficiencies, and the mathematics involved in display and interaction are derived. The calculations necessary for this interface are easy to implement, and …

Parsing Concurrent Xml, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar, Kazuyo Kaneko Nov 2004

Parsing Concurrent Xml, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar, Kazuyo Kaneko

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Concurrent markup hierarchies appear often in document-centric XML documents, as a result of different XML elements having overlapping scopes. They require significantly different approach to management and maintenance. Management of XML documents composed of concurrent markup has been mostly studied by the document processing community and has attracted attention of computer scientists only recently. In this paper we discuss the architecture of an XML parser for concurrent XML. This parser uses a GODDAG data structure in place of traditional DOM Tree to store concurrent markup on top of the document content and provides a DOM-like API that allows software developers …

Theses and Dissertations

This work is an analysis of solutions to problems derived from inherent timing and signal integrity issues in the use and application of the IEEE 1149.1 Standard at the board level in conjunction with its test system. Setup or hold times violations may occur in a boundary scan chain using IEEE 1149.1 compliant devices. A practical study of the TDI-TDO scan data path has been conducted to show where problems may arise in relationship to a particular board topology and test system. This work points to differences between passing and failing scan path tests for problem characterization. Serial data flow …

A Maximal Chain Approach For Scheduling Tasks In A Multiprocessor Systems, Sachin Pawaskar, Hesham Ali Nov 2004

A Maximal Chain Approach For Scheduling Tasks In A Multiprocessor Systems, Sachin Pawaskar, Hesham Ali

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Scheduling dependent tasks is one of the most challenging versions of the scheduling problem in parallel and distributed systems. It is known to be computationally intractable in its general form as well as several restricted cases. As a result, researchers have studied restricted forms of the problem by constraining either the task graph representing the parallel tasks or the computer model. Also, in an attempt to solve the problem in the general case, a number of heuristics have been developed. In this paper, we study the scheduling problem for a fixed number of processors m. In the proposed work, we …

A Tail-Recursive Machine With Stack Inspection, John Clements, Mathias Felleisen Nov 2004

A Tail-Recursive Machine With Stack Inspection, John Clements, Mathias Felleisen

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Security folklore holds that a security mechanism based on stack inspection is incompatible with a global tail call optimization policy; that an implementation of such a language must allocate memory for a source-code tail call, and a program that uses only tail calls (and no other memory allocating construct) may nevertheless exhaust the available memory. In this article, we prove this widely held belief wrong. We exhibit an abstract machine for a language with security stack inspection whose space consumption function is equivalent to that of the canonical tail call optimizing abstract machine. Our machine is surprisingly simple and suggests that …

Interoperability And The Need For Intelligent Software, Jens G. Pohl Nov 2004

Interoperability And The Need For Intelligent Software, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

In my introduction to this year’s conference I will address six questions that I believe come to the core of our conference theme of interoperability. Do we human beings resist change? Is it in fact a human problem and not a technical problem that we are dealing with? Can non-human intelligence exist? Do we even have a need for intelligent software? How did software, particularly intelligent software (i.e., if we accept that there is such a thing) evolve over the past several decades, and what is all this talk about a Semantic Web environment? And, finally, what does the …

Variable Bandwidth Filter For Multibeam Echo-Sounding Bottom Detection, Barbara J. Kraft, Christian De Moustier Nov 2004

Variable Bandwidth Filter For Multibeam Echo-Sounding Bottom Detection, Barbara J. Kraft, Christian De Moustier

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The accuracy of a seafloor map derived from multibeam swath bathymetry depends first and foremost on the quality of the bottom detection process that yields estimates of the arrival time and angle of bottom echoes received in each beam. Filtering of each beam with a fixed bandwidth filter, with the bandwidth based on the length of the transmitted pulse, reduces the error associated with the time-angle estimates. However, filters of this type can not be optimal over the wide range of operational environments encountered. Better results are obtained with a processing scheme that varies the filter bandwidth across the swath …

On Semantic Caching And Query Scheduling For Mobile Nearest-Neighbor Search, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Dik Lun Lee Nov 2004

On Semantic Caching And Query Scheduling For Mobile Nearest-Neighbor Search, Baihua Zheng, Wang-Chien Lee, Dik Lun Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Location-based services have received increasing attention in recent years. In this paper, we address the performance issues of mobile nearest-neighbor search, in which the mobile user issues a query to retrieve stationary service objects nearest to him/her. An index based on Voronoi Diagram is used in the server to support such a search, while a semantic cache is proposed to enhance the access efficiency of the service. Cache replacement policies tailored for the proposed semantic cache are examined. Moreover, several query scheduling policies are proposed to address the inter-cell roaming issues in multi-cell environments. Simulations are conducted to evaluate the …

Logistics Network Design With Differentiated Delivery Lead Time: A Chemical Industry Case Study, Michelle Lee Fong Cheong, Rohit Bhatnagar, Stephen C. Graves Nov 2004

Logistics Network Design With Differentiated Delivery Lead Time: A Chemical Industry Case Study, Michelle Lee Fong Cheong, Rohit Bhatnagar, Stephen C. Graves

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Most logistics network design models assume exogenous customer demand that is independent of the service time or level. This paper examines the benefits of segmenting demand according to lead-time sensitivity of customers. To capture lead-time sensitivity in the network design model, we use a facility grouping method to ensure that the different demand classes are satisfied on time. In addition, we perform a series of computational experiments to develop a set of managerial insights for the network design decision making process.

Integrated Coverage And Connectivity Configuration For Energy Conservation In Sensor Networks, Guoliang Xing, Xiaorui Wang, Yuanfang Zhang, Chenyang Lu, Robert Pless, Christopher Gill

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

An effective approach for energy conservation in wireless sensor networks is scheduling sleep intervals for extraneous nodes, while the remaining nodes stay active to provide continuous service. For the sensor network to operate successfully, the active nodes must maintain both sensing coverage and network connectivity. Fur-thermore, the network must be able to configure itself to any feasible degrees of coverage and connectivity in order to support different applications and environments with diverse requirements. This paper presents the design and analysis of novel protocols that can dynamically configure a network to achieve guaranteed degrees of coverage and connectivity. This work differs …
