A Paradigm For Spreadsheet Engineering Methodologies, Thomas A. Grossman Jr., O Ozluk Jan 2004

A Paradigm For Spreadsheet Engineering Methodologies, Thomas A. Grossman Jr., O Ozluk

Business Analytics and Information Systems

Spreadsheet engineering methodologies are diverse and sometimes contradictory. It is difficult for spreadsheet developers to identify a spreadsheet engineering methodology that is appropriate for their class of spreadsheet, with its unique combination of goals, type of problem, and available time and resources. There is a lack of well-organized, proven methodologies with known costs and benefits for well-defined spreadsheet classes. It is difficult to compare and critically evaluate methodologies. We present a paradigm for organizing and interpreting spreadsheet engineering recommendations. It systematically addresses the myriad choices made when developing a spreadsheet, and explicitly considers resource constraints and other development parameters. This …

A Change Impact Dependency Measure For Predicting The Maintainability Of Source Code, Xiaoqing Frank Liu Jan 2004

A Change Impact Dependency Measure For Predicting The Maintainability Of Source Code, Xiaoqing Frank Liu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

We first articulate the theoretic difficulties with the existing metrics designed for predicting software maintainability. To overcome the difficulties, we propose to measure a purely internal and objective attribute of code, namely change impact dependency, and show how it can be modeled to predict real change impact. The proposed base measure can be further elaborated for evaluating software maintainability.

Operator-Based Semantics For Logic Programs, Pascal Hitzler Jan 2004

Operator-Based Semantics For Logic Programs, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The question how knowledge can be represented by means of logic programs with negation has been a driving force for the field of non-monotonic reasoning. Implemented systems, known as answer set programming systems, have emerged recently and are currently being used in various application domains like the semantic web.

Intuitively, logic programs are being used for encoding commonsense reasoning, in particular the phenomenon that human reasoning tends to ”jump to conclusions” under incomplete knowledge. Formally, this kind of reasoning is described by interpreting the first-order syntax of logic programs in a more sophisticated way. This, in turn, is most easily …

On The Decidability Of The Termination Problem Of Active Database Systems, James Bailey, Guozhu Dong, K. Rammamohanarao Jan 2004

On The Decidability Of The Termination Problem Of Active Database Systems, James Bailey, Guozhu Dong, K. Rammamohanarao

Kno.e.sis Publications

Active database systems enhance the functionality of traditional databases through the use of active rules or ‘triggers’. One of the principal analysis questions for such systems is that of termination—is it possible for the rules to recursively activate one another indefinitely, given an initial triggering event. In this paper, we study the decidability of the termination problem, our aim being to delimit the boundary between the decidable and the undecidable. We present results for two broad types of variations, variations in rule syntax and variations in meta level features. Within each of these, we identify members close to the …

Ice Dynamics Preceding Catastrophic Disintegration Of The Floating Part Of Jakobshavn Isbræ, Greenland, Jesse V. Johnson, Paul R. Prescott, Terence J. Hughes Jan 2004

Ice Dynamics Preceding Catastrophic Disintegration Of The Floating Part Of Jakobshavn Isbræ, Greenland, Jesse V. Johnson, Paul R. Prescott, Terence J. Hughes

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The floating terminal of Jakobshavn Isbræ, the fastest Greenland ice stream, has disintegrated since 2002, resulting in a doubling of ice velocity and rapidly lowering inland ice elevations. Conditions prior to disintegration were modeled using control theory in a plane-stress solution, and the Missoula model of ice-shelf flow. Both approaches pointed to a mechanism that inhibits ice flow and that is not captured by either approach. Jamming of flow, an inherent property of granular materials passing through a constriction (Jakobshavn Isfjord), is postulated as the mechanism. Rapid disintegration of heavily crevassed floating ice accompanies break-up of the ice jam.

Efficient Linkage Discovery By Limited Probing, Robert B. Heckendorn, Alden H. Wright Jan 2004

Efficient Linkage Discovery By Limited Probing, Robert B. Heckendorn, Alden H. Wright

Computer Science Faculty Publications

This paper addresses the problem of discovering the structure of a fitness function from binary strings to the reals under the assumption of bounded epistasis. Two loci (string positions) are epistatically linked if the effect of changing the allele (value) at one locus depends on the allele at the other locus. Similarly, a group of loci are epistatically linked if the effect of changing the allele at one locus depends on the alleles at all other loci of the group. Under the assumption that the size of such groups of loci are bounded, and assuming that the function is given …

Detailed Spatially Distributed Geothermal Heat-Flow Data For Modeling Of Basal Temperatures And Meltwater Production Beneath The Fennoscandian Ice Sheet, Jens-Ove Näslund, Peter Jansson, James L. Fastook, Jesse Johnson, Leif Andersson Jan 2004

Detailed Spatially Distributed Geothermal Heat-Flow Data For Modeling Of Basal Temperatures And Meltwater Production Beneath The Fennoscandian Ice Sheet, Jens-Ove Näslund, Peter Jansson, James L. Fastook, Jesse Johnson, Leif Andersson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Accurate modeling of ice sheets requires proper information on boundary conditions, including the geothermal heat flow (or heat-flow density (HFD)). Traditionally, one uniform HFD value is adopted for the entire modeled domain. We have calculated a distributed, high-resolution HFD dataset for an approximate core area (Sweden and Finland) of the Scandinavian ice sheet, and imbedded this within lower-resolution data published for surrounding regions. Within the Last Glacial Maximum ice margin, HFD varies with a factor of as much as 2.8 (HFD values ranging between 30 and 83mWm–2), with an average of 49mWm–2. This average value is 17% higher than 42mWm–2, …

Extending Uml-Rt For Control System Modelling, Qimin Gao, Lyndon Brown, Luiz Fernando Capretz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

There is a growing interest in adopting object technologies for the development of real-time control systems. Several commercial tools, currently available, provide object-oriented modeling and design support for real-time control systems. While these products provide many useful facilities, such as visualization tools and automatic code generation, they are all weak in addressing the central characteristic of real-time control systems design, i.e., providing support for a designer to reason about timeliness properties. We believe an approach that integrates the advancements in both object modeling and design methods and real-time scheduling theory is the key to successful use of object technology for …

Biup3: Boundary Topological Invariant Of 3d Objects Through Front Propagation At A Constant Speed, Xiaoqing Frank Liu Jan 2004

Biup3: Boundary Topological Invariant Of 3d Objects Through Front Propagation At A Constant Speed, Xiaoqing Frank Liu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Topological features constitute the highest abstraction in object representation. Euler characteristic is one of the most widely used topological invariants. The computation of the Euler characteristic is mainly based on three well-known mathematical formulae, which calculate either on the boundary of object or on the whole object. However, as digital objects are often non-manifolds, none of the known formulae can correctly compute the genus of digital surfaces. In this paper, we show that a new topological surface invariant of 3D digital objects, called BIUP/sup 3/, can be obtained through a special homeomorphic transform: front propagation at a constant speed. BIUP/sup …

Real-Time 4d Tumor Tracking And Modeling From Internal And External Fiducials In Fluoroscopy, Johanna Brewer, Margrit Betke, David P. Gierga, George T.Y. Chen Jan 2004

Real-Time 4d Tumor Tracking And Modeling From Internal And External Fiducials In Fluoroscopy, Johanna Brewer, Margrit Betke, David P. Gierga, George T.Y. Chen

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Fluoroscopy is currently used in treatment planning for patients undergoing radiation therapy. Radiation oncologists would like to maximize the amount of dose the tumor receives and minimize the amount delivered to the surrounding tissues. During treatment, patients breathe freely and so the tumor location will not be fixed. This makes calculating the amount of dose delivered to the tumor, and verifying that the tumor actually receives that dose, difficult. We describe a correlation- based method of tracking the two-dimensional (2D) motion of internal markers (surgical clips) placed around the tumor. We established ground truth and evaluated the accuracy of the …

Dynamic Voltage Scaling For Sporadic And Periodic Tasks, Ala' Adel Qadi, Steve Goddard, Shane Farritor Jan 2004

Dynamic Voltage Scaling For Sporadic And Periodic Tasks, Ala' Adel Qadi, Steve Goddard, Shane Farritor

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) algorithms save energy by scaling down the processor frequency when the processor is not fully loaded. Many algorithms have been proposed for periodic and aperiodic task models but none support the periodic and sporadic task models when the deadlines are not equal to their periods. A DVS algorithm, called General Dynamic Voltage Scaling (GDVS), that can be used with sporadic or periodic tasks in conjunction with the preemptive EDF scheduling algorithm with no constraints on the deadlines is presented here. The algorithm is proven to guarantee each task meets its deadline while saving the maximum amount …

We present an intelligent system for satellite sea ice image analysis named Advanced Reasoning using Knowledge for Typing Of Sea ice (ARKTOS). ARKTOS performs fully automated analysis of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sea ice images by mimicking the reasoning process of sea ice experts. ARKTOS automatically segments a SAR image of sea ice, generates descriptors for the segments of the image, and then uses expert system rules to classify these sea ice features. ARKTOS also utilizes multisource data fusion to improve classification and performs belief handling using Dempster–Shafer. As a software package, ARKTOS comprises components in image processing, rule-based classification, …

Reasoning And Learning With Imperfect Casebases: An Agent Perspective With An Expert Model, Leen-Kiat Soh Jan 2004

Reasoning And Learning With Imperfect Casebases: An Agent Perspective With An Expert Model, Leen-Kiat Soh

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Traditionally, case-based reasoning (CBR) (e.g., Watson and Marir 1994) assumes that the cases in the casebase are correct, useful in both time and space. Otherwise, the cases would not have been stored in the casebase in the first place. Cases are supposed to be useful in guiding us to a successful solution, or in preventing us from repeating the same failure.

Survivable Traffic Grooming With Path Protection At The Connection Level In Wdm Mesh Networks, Wang Yao, Byrav Ramamurthy Jan 2004

Survivable Traffic Grooming With Path Protection At The Connection Level In Wdm Mesh Networks, Wang Yao, Byrav Ramamurthy

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Survivable traffic grooming (STG) is a promising approach to provide reliable and resource-efficient multigranularity connection services in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks. In this paper, we study the STG problem in WDM mesh optical networks employing path protection at the connection level. Both dedicated protection and shared protection schemes are considered. Given the network resources, the objective of the STG problem is to maximize network throughput. To enable survivability under various kinds of single failures such as fiber cut and duct cut, we consider the general shared risk link group (SRLG) diverse routing constraints. We first resort to the …

Analysis technique that has found applications in various areas. In this paper, we study some multivariate statistical analysis methods in Secure 2-party Computation (S2C) framework illustrated by the following scenario: two parties, each having a secret data set, want to conduct the statistical analysis on their joint data, but neither party is willing to disclose its private data to the other party or any third party. The current statistical analysis techniques cannot be used directly to support this kind of computation because they require all parties to send the necessary data to a central place. In this paper, We define …

A Graph Model For Dynamicwaveband Switching In Wdm Mesh Networks, Mengke Li, Byrav Ramamurthy Jan 2004

A Graph Model For Dynamicwaveband Switching In Wdm Mesh Networks, Mengke Li, Byrav Ramamurthy

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

We investigate the problem of waveband switching (WBS) in a wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) mesh network with dynamic traffic requests. To solve the WBS problem in a homogeneous dynamic WBS network, where every node is a multi-granular optical cross-connect (MG-OXC), we construct an auxiliary graph. Based on the auxiliary graph, we develop two heuristic on-line WBS algorithms with different grouping policies, namely the wavelength-first WBS algorithm based on the auxiliary graph (WFAUG) and the waveband-first WBS algorithm based on the auxiliary graph (BFAUG). Our results show that the WFAUG algorithm outperforms the BFAUG algorithm.

Ilmda: Intelligent Learning Materials Delivery Agents, Leen-Kiat Soh, L.D. Miller, Todd Blank, Suzette Person Jan 2004

Ilmda: Intelligent Learning Materials Delivery Agents, Leen-Kiat Soh, L.D. Miller, Todd Blank, Suzette Person

School of Computing: Technical Reports

In this paper, we describe an intelligent agent that delivers learning materials adaptively to different students, factoring in the usage history of the learning materials, the student static background profile, and the student dynamic activity profile. Our assumption is that through the interaction of a student going through a learning material (i.e., a topical tutorial, a set of examples, and a set of problems), our agent will be able to capture and utilize the student’s activity as the primer to select the appropriate example or problem to administer to the student. Even if the agent fails to do so, it …

On Cooperative Learning Teams For Multiagent Team Formation, Leen-Kiat Soh Jan 2004

On Cooperative Learning Teams For Multiagent Team Formation, Leen-Kiat Soh

School of Computing: Technical Reports

In this paper, we propose a team formation methodology based on cooperative learning teams, adopted from the area of educational research. Cooperative learning is a type of learning where students work in teams and learn through team-based interactions. In education, research in assigning students to appropriate teams and enforcing fair assessment of student performance in a team have generated useful policies and rules. In our multiagent systems project, we use these policies and rules as the underlying framework to evaluate and form teams. We have built a system called I-MINDS as an infrastructure to support cooperative learning among remote and …
