Hierarchical Text Classification Methods And Their Specification, Ee Peng Lim, Aixin Sun, Wee-Keong Ng
Hierarchical Text Classification Methods And Their Specification, Ee Peng Lim, Aixin Sun, Wee-Keong Ng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Hierarchical text classification refers to assigning text documents to the categories in a given category tree based on their content. With large number of categories organized as a tree, hierarchical text classification helps users to find information more quickly and accurately. Nevertheless, hierarchical text classification methods in the past have often been constructed in a proprietary manner. The construction steps often involve human efforts and are not completely automated. In this chapter, we therefore propose a specification language known as HCL (Hierarchical Classification Language). HCL is designed to describe a hierarchical classification method including the definition of a category tree …
Reverse Geographic Location Of A Computer Node, Clinton G. Carr Iii
Reverse Geographic Location Of A Computer Node, Clinton G. Carr Iii
Theses and Dissertations
The determination of methods by which a user is able to locate his computer when that user does not know his current location, termed "homestation", will provide the Air Force an advantage over its adversaries. The methods are a combination of different mathematical techniques that enable the user to manipulate data to minimize the effects of delay caused by various factors on the network. The techniques use the smallest round trip time obtained from the ping utility. This time is then converted into miles and plotted on a map of the United States. The methods used to solve this problem …
An Artificial Immune System Strategy For Robust Chemical Spectra Classification Via Distributed Heterogeneous Sensors, Mark A. Esslinger
An Artificial Immune System Strategy For Robust Chemical Spectra Classification Via Distributed Heterogeneous Sensors, Mark A. Esslinger
Theses and Dissertations
The timely detection and classification of chemical and biological agents in a wartime environment is a critical component of force protection in hostile areas. Moreover, the possibility of toxic agent use in heavily populated civilian areas has risen dramatically in recent months. This thesis effort proposes a strategy for identifying such agents vis distributed sensors in an Artificial Immune System (AIS) network. The system may be used to complement "electronic" nose ("E-nose") research being conducted in part by the Air Force Research Laboratory Sensors Directorate. In addition, the proposed strategy may facilitate fulfillment of a recent mandate by the President …
Uml Assisted Visual Debugging For Distributed Systems, Benjamin R. Musial
Uml Assisted Visual Debugging For Distributed Systems, Benjamin R. Musial
Theses and Dissertations
The DOD is developing a Joint Battlespace Infosphere, linking a large number of data sources and user applications. To assist in this process, debugging and analysis tools are required. Software debugging is an extremely difficult cognitive process requiring comprehension of the overall application behavior, along with detailed understanding of specific application components. This is further complicated with distributed systems by the addition of other programs, their large size and synchronization issues. Typical debuggers provide inadequate support for this process, focusing primarily on the details accessible through source code. To overcome this deficiency, this research links the dynamic program execution state …
Using Sequence Analysis To Perform Application-Based Anomaly Detection Within An Artificial Immune System Framework, Larissa A. O'Brien
Using Sequence Analysis To Perform Application-Based Anomaly Detection Within An Artificial Immune System Framework, Larissa A. O'Brien
Theses and Dissertations
The Air Force and other Department of Defense (DoD) computer systems typically rely on traditional signature-based network IDSs to detect various types of attempted or successful attacks. Signature-based methods are limited to detecting known attacks or similar variants; anomaly-based systems, by contrast, alert on behaviors previously unseen. The development of an effective anomaly-detecting, application based IDS would increase the Air Force's ability to ward off attacks that are not detected by signature-based network IDSs, thus strengthening the layered defenses necessary to acquire and maintain safe, secure communication capability. This system follows the Artificial Immune System (AIS) framework, which relies on …

Stegfs: A Steganographic File System, Hwee Hwa Pang, Kian-Lee Tan, Xuan Zhou
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
While user access control and encryption can protect valuable data from passive observers, those techniques leave visible ciphertexts that are likely to alert an active adversary to the existence of the data, who can then compel an authorized user to disclose it. This paper introduces StegFS, a steganographic file system that aims to overcome that weakness by offering plausible deniability to owners of protected files. StegFS securely hides user-selected files in a file system so that, without the corresponding access keys, an attacker would not be able to deduce their existence, even if the attacker is thoroughly familiar with the …

Motion Analysis And Segmentation Through Spatio-Temporal Slices Processing, Chong-Wah Ngo, Ting-Chuen Pong, Hong-Jiang Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper presents new approaches in characterizing and segmenting the content of video. These approaches are developed based upon the pattern analysis of spatio-temporal slices. While traditional approaches to motion sequence analysis tend to formulate computational methodologies on two or three adjacent frames, spatio-temporal slices provide rich visual patterns along a larger temporal scale. In this paper, we first describe a motion computation method based on a structure tensor formulation. This method encodes visual patterns of spatio-temporal slices in a tensor histogram, on one hand, characterizing the temporal changes of motion over time, on the other hand, describing the motion …
Comparing The Routing Energy Overheads Of Ad-Hoc Routing Protocols, Sorav Bansal, Rajeev Shorey, Archan Misra
Comparing The Routing Energy Overheads Of Ad-Hoc Routing Protocols, Sorav Bansal, Rajeev Shorey, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We use simulations to study the comparative routing overheads of three ad-hoc routing protocols, namely AODV, DSDV and DSR. In contrast to earlier studies, we focus exclusively on the energy consumption and not on other metrics such as the number of routing packets. In particular, we study the `range effects' of the three protocols, i.e., how changes to the transmission power and transmission radius affect the overall energy consumed by routing-related packets. Due to the broadcast nature of the wireless medium, the energy spent in packet receptions is almost as important as the transmission power; using the number of transmissions …

Energy-Efficient Broadcast And Multicast Trees For Reliable Wireless Communication, Suman Banerjee, Archan Misra, Jihwang Yeo, Ashok Agrawala
Energy-Efficient Broadcast And Multicast Trees For Reliable Wireless Communication, Suman Banerjee, Archan Misra, Jihwang Yeo, Ashok Agrawala
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We define energy-efficient broadband and multicast schemes for reliable communication in multi-hop wireless networks. Unlike previous techniques, the choice of neighbors in the broadband and multicast trees in these schemes, are based not only on the link distance, but also on the error rates associated with the link. Our schemes can be implemented using both positive and negative acknowledgement based reliable broadcast techniques in the link layer. Through simulations, we show that our scheme achieves up to 45% improvement over previous schemes on realistic 100-node network topologies. A positive acknowledgment based implementation is preferred. Our simulations show that the additional …
Adaptive Transmission Power For Optimal Energy Reliable Multi-Hop Wireless Communication, Suman Banerjee, Archan Misra
Adaptive Transmission Power For Optimal Energy Reliable Multi-Hop Wireless Communication, Suman Banerjee, Archan Misra
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We define a transmission power adaptation-based routing technique that finds optimal paths for minimum energy reliable data transfer in multi-hop wireless networks. This optimal choice of the transmission power depends on the link distance between the two nodes and the channel characteristics. Typical energy efficient routing techniques use a transmission power such that the received signal power at the destination minimally exceeds a desired threshold signal strength level. In this paper we argue that such a choice of the transmission power does not always lead to optimal energy routes, since it does not consider differences in the receiver noise levels. …
Flexible And Scalable Public Key Security For Ssh, Yasir Ali
Flexible And Scalable Public Key Security For Ssh, Yasir Ali
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
A standard tool for secure remote access, the SSH protocol uses public-key cryptography to establish an encrypted and integrity-protected channel with a remote server. However, widely-deployed implementations of the protocol are vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks, where an adversary substitutes her public key for the server's. This danger particularly threatens a traveling user Bob borrowing a client machine.
Imposing a traditional X.509 PKI on all SSH servers and clients is neither flexible nor scalable nor (in the foreseeable future) practical. Requiring extensive work or an SSL server at Bob's site is also not practical for many users.
This paper presents our …

Towards A Performance Model For Special Purpose Orb Middleware, Venkita Subramonian, Guoliang Xing, Christopher Gill, Ron Cytron
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
General purpose middleware has been shown effective in meeting diverse functional requirements for a wide range of distributed systems. Advanced middleware projects have also supported single quality-of-service dimensions such as real-time, fault tolerance, or small memory foot-print. However, there is limited experience supporting multiple quality-of-service dimensions in middleware to meet the needs of special purpose applications. Even though general purpose middleware can cover an entire spectrum of functionality by supporting the union of all features required by each application, this approach breaks down for distributed real-time and embedded sys-tems. For example, the breadth of features supported may interfere with small …

Development Of A Systems Engineering Model Of The Chemical Separations Process: Quarterly Progress Report 11/16/02- 2/15/03, Yitung Chen, Randy Clarksean, Darrell Pepper
Separations Campaign (TRP)
Two activities are proposed in this Phase I task: the development of a systems engineering model and the refinement of the Argonne code AMUSE (Argonne Model for Universal Solvent Extraction). The detailed systems engineering model is the start of an integrated approach to the analysis of the materials separations associated with the TRP Program. A second portion of the project is to streamline and improve an integral part of the overall systems model, which is the software package AMUSE. AMUSE analyzes the UREX process and other related solvent extraction processes and defines many of the process streams that are integral …
Twinscan: A Software Package For Homology-Based Gene Prediction, Paul Flicek
Twinscan: A Software Package For Homology-Based Gene Prediction, Paul Flicek
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
A complete mapping from genome to proteome would constitute a foundation for genome-based biology and provide targets for pharmaceutical and therapeutic intervention. This is one reason gene structure prediction has been a major subfield of computational biology for over 20 years. Many of the widely used gene prediction systems were developed in the 1990s and are unable to take advantage of the revolution in comparative genomics brought on by the sequencing of the entire genomes of an increasing numbers of vertebrates. Twinscan is a new system for high-throughput gene-structure prediction that exploits the patterns of conservation observed in alignments between …
Privacy-Enhanced Credential Services, Alex Iliev, Sean Smith
Privacy-Enhanced Credential Services, Alex Iliev, Sean Smith
Computer Science Technical Reports
The use of credential directories in PKI and authorization systems such as Shibboleth introduces a new privacy risk: an insider at the directory can learn much about otherwise protected interactions by observing who makes queries, and what they ask for. Recent advances in Practical Private Information Retrieval provide promising countermeasures. In this paper, we extend this technology to solve this new privacy problem, and present a design and preliminary prototype for a LDAP-based credential service that can prevent even an insider from learning anything more than the fact a query was made. Our preliminary performance analysis suggests that the complete …

Keyjacking: Risks Of The Current Client-Side Infrastructure, John Marchesini, S W. Smith, Meiyuan Zhao
Computer Science Technical Reports
In theory, PKI can provide a flexible and strong way to authenticate users in distributed information systems. In practice, much is being invested in realizing this vision via client-side SSL and browser-based keystores. Exploring this vision, we demonstrate that browsers will use personal certificates to authenticate requests that the person neither knew of nor approved (and which password-based systems would have defeated), and we demonstrate the easy permeability of these keystores (including new attacks on medium and high-security IE/XP keys). We suggest some countermeasures, but also suggest that a fundamental rethinking of the trust, usage, and storage model might result …

Enterprise Integration With Erp And Eai, Jinyoul Lee, Keng Siau, Soongoo Hong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The Integration of enterprise with the ERP (enterprise resource planning) and EAI (enterprise application integration) is discussed. The ERP supports the centralized business strategy while EAI accomodates the decentralized business processes. The changes brought in by the internet technology led the internalization and extrenalization to move together. The agility and the flexibility in the organizations would be achieved by a greater degree of communication, coordination and cooperation in human factors and information technologies. The enterprise integration fulfills the needs of both internal business processes and external customer by internalization and externalization.

Handgrip Pattern Recognition, Zong Chen
Handgrip Pattern Recognition, Zong Chen
Dissertations
There are numerous tragic gun deaths each year. Making handguns safer by personalizing them could prevent most such tragedies. Personalized handguns, also called "smart" guns, are handguns that can only be fired by the authorized user. Handgrip pattern recognition holds great promise in the development of the smart gun.
Two algorithms, static analysis algorithm and dynamic analysis algorithm, were developed to find the patterns of a person about how to grasp a handgun. The static analysis algorithm measured 160 subjects' fingertip placements on the replica gun handle. The cluster analysis and discriminant analysis were applied to these fingertip placements, and …
A Method For Developing In-Silico Protein Homologs, Susan Mcclatchy
A Method For Developing In-Silico Protein Homologs, Susan Mcclatchy
Theses
Computational methods for identifying and screening the most promising drug receptor candidates in the human genome are of great interest to drug discovery researchers. Successful methods will accurately identify and narrow the field of potential drug receptor candidates. This study details one such method.
The method described here begins with the assumption that novel drug receptors have high sequence similarity to established drug receptors. The similarity search program FASTA3 aligns translated sequences of the human genome to known drug receptor sequences and ranks these alignments by measuring their statistical significance. Query results returned by FASTA3 are assembled into "in-silico proteins" …

Functional Annotation And Dendrogram Representation Of Gene Expression Clustering Results, Antoneta Petkova Vladimirova
Theses
The advances in genomic sciences have created vast amounts of gene expression data. To make sense of the expression information, various techniques have been applied. Clustering is among the unsupervised methods used to group the results according to gene expression level. Dendrogram visualization allows graphical representation of the clustering. The aim of this thesis is to enhance these techniques by adding another layer of functionality, namely, annotating the dendrogram with gene functional information. Presented is an application which visualizes yeast clustering results as a dendrogram along with color-coded gene keyword annotations. Gene keyword information was extracted from a major biological …

Analysis Of Gene Expression Data Using Expressionist 3.1 And Genespring 4.2, Indu Shrivastava
Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in the gene expression analysis methods of two data mining tools, ExpressionisticTM 3.1 and GeneSpringTM 4.2 with focus on basic statistical analysis and clustering algorithms. The data for this analysis was derived from the hybridization of Rattus norvegicus RNA to the Affymetrix RG34A GeneChip. This analysis was derived from experiments designed to identify changes in gene expression patterns that were induced in vivo by an experimental treatment.
The tools were found to be comparable with respect to the list of statistically significant genes that were up-regulated by more …
