A mobile agent is an executing program that can migrate, at times of its own choosing, from machine to machine in a heterogeneous network. On each machine, the agent interacts with stationary service agents and other resources to accomplish its task. In this chapter, we first make the case for mobile agents, discussing six strengths of mobile agents and the applications that benefit from these strengths. Although none of these strengths are unique to mobile agents, no competing technique shares all six. An effective, integrated telemedicine system has been developed that allows (a) teleconsultation between local primary health care providers (primary care physicians and general radiologists) and remote imaging subspecialists and (b) active patient participation related to his or her medical condition and patient education. The initial stage of system development was a traditional teleradiology consultation service between general radiologists and specialists; this established system was expanded to include primary care physicians and patients. The system was developed by using a well-defined process model, resulting in three integrated modules: a patient module, a primary health care provider module, and a specialist module. …

We present a fast, memory efficient algorithm that generates a manifold triangular mesh S passing through a set of unorganized points Pc R3. Nothing is assumed about the geometry, topology or presence of boundaries in the data set except that P is sampled from a real manifold surface. The speed of our algorithm is derived from a projection-based approach we use to determine the incident faces on a point. Model simplification is often used in computer graphics to reduce the complexity of large polygonal models. For many graphics applications, the goal of this process is to produce a coarser model that is visually similar to the original, allowing the complex original model to be replaced with little or no loss in perceived quality. Existing simplification techniques, however, rely on geometry-based heuristics as an indirect indicator of visual similarity. We propose a novel image-driven simplification method that uses rendered images of a model and an image metric as a means of measuring visual similarity. Using this approach, changes in appearance …

Estimating Tessellation Parameter Intervals For Rational Curves And Surfaces, Thomas W. Sederberg, Jianmin Zheng

This paper presents a method for determining a priori a constant parameter interval with which a rational curve or surface can be tessellated such that the deviation of the curve or surface from its piecewise linear approximation is within a specified tolerance. The parameter interval is estimated based on information about the second order derivatives in the homogeneous coordinates, instead of using affine coordinates directly. This new step size can be found with roughly the same amount of computation as the step size presented in [Cheng 1992], though it can be proven to always be larger than Cheng's step size. …

In the process of integrating legacy databases, one has to resolve inter-database conflicts at both the schema and instance levels. In this paper, we discuss relationship conflicts as a special type of conflicts to be resolved during the database integration. Relationships are properties that relate real world objects. So far, most inter-database relationship conflicts are addressed at the schema-level by various schema integration techniques. However, instance-level relationship conflicts are largely neglected. This paper therefore investigates the causes of instance-level relationship conflicts and proposes a taxonomy for classifying instance-level relationship conflicts. Server responsiveness and scalability are more important than ever in today’s client/server dominated network environments. Recently, researchers have begun to consider cluster-based computers using commodity hardware as an alternative to expensive specialized hardware for building scalable Web servers. In this paper, we present performance results comparing two cluster-based Web servers based on different server infrastructures: MAC-based dispatching (LSMAC) and IP-based dispatching (LSNAT). Both cluster-based server systems were implemented as application-space programs running on commodity hardware. We point out the advantages and disadvantages of both systems. We also identify when servers should be clustered and when clustering will not improve performance.

The bandwidth requirements of the Internet are increasing every day and there are newer and more bandwidth-thirsty applications emerging on the horizon. Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is the next step towards leveraging the capabilities of the optical fiber, especially for wide-area backbone networks. The ability to switch a signal at intermediate nodes in a WDM network based on their wavelengths is known as wavelength-routing. In simulation based design verification, deterministic or pseudo-random tests are used to check functional correctness of a design. In this paper we present a technique generating tests by specifying the don’t care inputs in the functional specifications so as to improve their coverage of both design errors and manufacturing faults. The don’t cares are chosen to maximize sensitization of signals in the circuit. The tests generated in this way require only a fraction of pseudo-exhaustive test patterns to achieve a high multiplicity of fault coverage.
