Large-scale scientific applications present great challenges to computational scientists in terms of obtaining high performance and in managing large datasets. These applications (most of which are simulations) may employ multiple techniques and resources in a heterogeneously distributed environment. Effective working in such an environment is crucial for modern large-scale simulations. In this paper, we present an integrated Java graphical user interface (IJ-GUI) that provides a control platform for managing complex programs and their large datasets easily. As far as performance is concerned, we present and evaluate our initial implementation of two optimization schemes: data replication and data prediction. Data replication …

Many books often gush over Java. People want to know, before they learn a language, what the drawbacks are for a language. They want to know what the strenghs are. After all, a computer language is just a tool. We shape our tools, and there after, our tools shape us! This chapter contains a dialog between three Java instructors. The participants are, Professors Good, Bad and Ugly. Professor Good is a strong proponent of Java. Professor Bad is a strong opponent of Java. Professor Ugly has been leaning toward the asthetic analysis of the language, particularly with an eye toward …
State-Based Reconstructability Modeling For Decision Analysis, Michael S. Johnson, Martin Zwick
State-Based Reconstructability Modeling For Decision Analysis, Michael S. Johnson, Martin Zwick
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
Reconstructability analysis (RA) is a method for detecting and analyzing the structure of multivariate categorical data. Jones and his colleagues extended the original variable-based formulation of RA to encompass models defined in terms of system states (Jones 1982; Jones 1985; Jones 1985; Jones 1986; Jones 1989). In this paper, we demonstrate that Jones’ previous work comprises two separable ideas: the “g to k” transformation and state-based modeling. We relate the concept of state-based modeling to established variable-based RA methods (Klir 1985; Krippendorff 1986), and demonstrate that statebased modeling, when applied to event and decision tree models, is a valuable adjunct …

Data As Ensembles Of Records: Representation And Comparison, Nicholas Howe
Data As Ensembles Of Records: Representation And Comparison, Nicholas Howe
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Many collections of data do not come packaged in a form amenable to the ready application of machine learning techniques. Nevertheless, there has been only limited research on the problem of preparing raw data for learning, perhaps because widespread differences between domains make generalization difficult. This paper focuses on one common class of raw data, in which the entities of interest actually comprise collections of (smaller pieces of) homologous data. We present a technique for processing such collections into high-dimensional vectors, suitable for the application of many learning algorithms including clustering, nearestneighbors, and boosting. We demonstrate the abilities of the …

Software Piracy: Attitudes & Opinions Of Computer Users And Implications For Software Manufacturers & Consumers, Bharath Pola
Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)
Computer software became registered as a form of literary expression by the United States Copyright Office in 1964. By 1980, the Copyright Act was amended to explicitly include software applications. Today, it is illegal to create copies of original program disks without express permission from the manufacturer (Microsoft 1994). The Software and Information Industry Association (SIIA) states that $2.4 billion worth of copyrighted software was pirated in 1990. This figure represents almost one-half of the total revenue of the software industry for that year. An additional $10 to $12 billion was lost to pirates overseas. However, such statistics maintained by …

Virtual Reality And The Modern Ideology Of Order And Control, Craig I. Murrihy
Virtual Reality And The Modern Ideology Of Order And Control, Craig I. Murrihy
Theses : Honours
In this thesis I will examine the construction of the concept of Virtual Reality. I argue that rather than a technology of liberation as it is often perceived, virtual realities' conception has been influenced significantly by a discourse of control and order. I examine books, articles and films concerning Virtual Reality to support this claim. Furthermore this discourse of control and order is born out of a larger ideology of Western culture that values order and control. Throughout modernity this ideology has manifested itself through techniques and technologies of social and environmental control. I provide a brief historical outline highlighting …

Vhdl Design And Simulation For Embedded Zerotree Wavelet Quantisation, Hung Huynh
Theses : Honours
This thesis discusses a highly effective still image compression algorithm – The Embedded Zerotree Wavelets coding technique, as it is called. This technique is simple but achieves a remarkable result. The image is wavelet-transformed, symbolically coded and successive quantised, therefore the compression and transmission/storage saving can be achieved by utilising the structure of zerotree. The algorithm was first proposed by Jerome M. Shapiro in 1993, however to minimise the memory usage and speeding up the EZW processor, a Depth First Search method is used to transverse across the image rather than Breadth First Search method as initially discussed in Shapiro's …

Electroanalysis Using Differential Pulse Methods And Stripping Techniques., Enda Howard
Electroanalysis Using Differential Pulse Methods And Stripping Techniques., Enda Howard
Masters
Application of a differential pulse waveform to a microelectrode or a rotating disk electrode results in a peaked response for amperometric redox reactions. Based on these observations models were proposed and tested for these methods. Simulations of the models were carried out by inputting the relevant equations into Microsoft Excel. The microelectrode study revealed a good correlation between one model and the numerical derivative of the current following a linear sweep potential waveform. Experimentally the derivative can be obtained numerically following a linear sweep. The alternative differential pulse waveform requires more sophisticated equipment and the response can be affected by …
Security In Distributed Systems - A Framework For Different Application Types, Ingo Stengel
Security In Distributed Systems - A Framework For Different Application Types, Ingo Stengel
Theses
Security is a factor which decides upon the applicability of distributed applications. Therefore this thesis deals with security in distributed systems. The complexity of the existing distributed technologies makes it necessary to reduce the number of distributed technologies considered in this thesis, i.e. concentrating on: Java, Mobile Agents and CORBA, where only Java-based mobile agents will be considered.
After a short review of basic security principles including firewalls, existing security problems in the above mentioned distributed technologies are analysed. Additional generic problems in distributed systems are outlined.
Solutions are referring to two different areas: those regarding security problems with firewalls …
Quality Of Service Management For Non-Guaranteed Networks, Tarek Madkour
Quality Of Service Management For Non-Guaranteed Networks, Tarek Madkour
Archived Theses and Dissertations
The increasing dominance of multimedia communication posed new requirements for the underlying systems. Multimedia data, formally called continuous media, has time constraints that impose real time limitations for their transmission. Certain levels of service, called Quality of Service (QoS), need to be considered when handling continuous media. The present work utilizes QoS concepts for networks that do not have inherent QoS support. The thesis aims at verifying the possibility of having QoS-controlled communication on non-guaranteed networks. A basic QoS architecture is designed where already existing QoS concepts are adapted to work with non-guaranteed networks. The architecture provides the facilities of …

Analysis Of Intangible Factors In Waste Minimization Projects, Halvard E. Nystrom, William Ralph Kehr
Analysis Of Intangible Factors In Waste Minimization Projects, Halvard E. Nystrom, William Ralph Kehr
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Continual population growth and rising standards of living that accelerate the consumption of limited resources, are forcing society to encourage conservation of these resources. These resources not only include raw material, but also the areas to dispose of the wastes. As a result, communities are driving industries towards waste minimization by limiting waste generation and landfill availability. Firms'' environmentally friendly strategies can gain competitive advantage by leading in environmental practices. This advantage emanates from the reduction of risk of environmental regulatory overreaction, as well as improved asset utilization and landfill utilization. However, these intangible benefits are difficult to identify and …
Quasi-Monte Carlo Methods In Cash Flow Testing Simulations, Michael Gene Hilgers
Quasi-Monte Carlo Methods In Cash Flow Testing Simulations, Michael Gene Hilgers
Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works
What actuaries call cash flow testing is a large-scale simulation pitting a company''s current policy obligation against future earnings based on interest rates. While life contingency issues associated with contract payoff are a mainstay of the actuarial sciences, modeling the random fluctuations of US Treasury rates is less studied. Furthermore, applying standard simulation techniques, such as the Monte Carlo method, to actual multi-billion dollar companies produce a simulation that can be computationally prohibitive. In practice, only hundreds of sample paths can be considered, not the usual hundreds of thousands one might expect for a simulation of this complexity. Hence, insurance …

Strategy Planning For Technological Discontinuities In A Changing Regulatory Environment, William Ralph Kehr, Halvard E. Nystrom
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper describes an approach to the analysis of publicly available financial data for individual industries. These methods enable the analyst to assess past practices and the historical rate of technological diffusion during the transition period of discontinuous technological change. This assessment can provide a basis of comparison for current changes in their industry. These methods are applied to small rural telephone companies during the period of 1960 to 1996. Annual data is presented detailing the change from aerial distribution cable to buried cable by the roughly 600 rural telephone companies financed through loans from the Rural Utilities Services, a …

Design And Implementation Of A University Department Website, Margaret M. Rick
Graduate Research Papers
The website design cycle consists of four important components: (1) planning, (2) production, (3) implementation, and (4) operation. Within these components are a variety of vital tasks ranging from defining the objective and audience to conceptualizing the site, determining content, and creating, testing, and revising the site. Numerous rules or accepted principles guide the design process from color and font selection, to graphic creation, to site navigation layout. Once created, a website must be maintained: content should be updated and outside links verified on a regular basis. A site that is not maintained or kept current is of no benefit …

An Examination Of A Multidimensional Model Of Customer Satisfaction With Internet Purchasing, Kathleen Vanscoyoc
Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration
The World Wide Web and Internet have transformed the competitive business environment and altered the customer-firm relationship by creating a new retailing format and service enterprise. It is rapidly growing as a competitive distribution medium in which customer satisfaction will be a major success factor in the development and maintenance of this new retailing format. Despite its growing importance as a new shopping medium, little empirical research has been conducted that examines the relationship between Internet shopping, customer satisfaction, company image, and future online purchasing. Research is needed to develop theoretical models that will systematically explain and predict behavior related …

A mobile agent is an executing program that can migrate, at times of its own choosing, from machine to machine in a heterogeneous network. On each machine, the agent interacts with stationary service agents and other resources to accomplish its task. In this chapter, we first make the case for mobile agents, discussing six strengths of mobile agents and the applications that benefit from these strengths. Although none of these strengths are unique to mobile agents, no competing technique shares all six. In other words, a mobile-agent system provides a single general framework in which a wide range of distributed …
