Incremental Data Annotation With Mask R-Cnn, Michael Miller Jun 2019

Incremental Data Annotation With Mask R-Cnn, Michael Miller

Theses and Dissertations

With the advent of object detection and instance segmentation algorithms, the complexity of annotating training data has compounded. In traditional image classification tasks, training images must only be given a label. This type of training data alone is not enough to perform detection or instance segmentation as we need additional object level information like bounding boxes or segmentation masks appended to the annotation. There are many tools that help a user process images to produce data annotations that contain bounding box and segmentation mask information. However, most of these are semi-supervised and require a user to be present for each …

The Trust-Based Interactive Partially Observable Markov Decision Process, Richard S. Seymour Jun 2019

The Trust-Based Interactive Partially Observable Markov Decision Process, Richard S. Seymour

Theses and Dissertations

Cooperative agent and robot systems are designed so that each is working toward the same common good. The problem is that the software systems are extremely complex and can be subverted by an adversary to either break the system or potentially worse, create sneaky agents who are willing to cooperate when the stakes are low and take selfish, greedy actions when the rewards rise. This research focuses on the ability of a group of agents to reason about the trustworthiness of each other and make decisions about whether to cooperate. A trust-based interactive partially observable Markov decision process (TI-POMDP) is …

Multi-Resolution Models For Learning Multilevel Abstract Representation With Application To Information Retrieval, Tolgahan Cakaloglu Jun 2019

Multi-Resolution Models For Learning Multilevel Abstract Representation With Application To Information Retrieval, Tolgahan Cakaloglu

Theses and Dissertations

Deep language models learning a hierarchical representation proved to be a powerful tool for natural language processing, text mining, and information retrieval tasks. However, more specifically, representations that perform well for ad-hoc retrieval must capture semantic meaning at different levels of abstraction or context-scopes. The primary goal of ad-hoc retrieval is to find relevant documents satisfying the information need posted in a natural language query. It requires a good understanding of the query and all the documents in a corpus, which is difficult because the meaning of natural language texts depends on the context, syntax, and semantics. In this dissertation, …

Multi-Human Management Of A Hub-Based Colony: Efficiency And Robustness In The Cooperative Best M-Of-N Task, John Rolfes Grosh Jun 2019

Multi-Human Management Of A Hub-Based Colony: Efficiency And Robustness In The Cooperative Best M-Of-N Task, John Rolfes Grosh

Theses and Dissertations

Swarm robotics is an emerging field that is expected to provide robust solutions to spatially distributed problems. Human operators will often be required to guide a swarm in the fulfillment of a mission. Occasionally, large tasks may require multiple spatial swarms to cooperate in their completion. We hypothesize that when latency, bandwidth, operator dropout, and communication noise are significant factors, human organizations that promote individual initiative perform more effectively and resiliently than hierarchies in the cooperative best-m-of-n task. Simulations automating the behavior of hub-based swarm robotic agents and groups of human operators are used to evaluate this hypothesis. To make …

Recent research has demonstrated a methodology using evolutionary algorithms (EAs) which is intended to develop near-optimal Space Surveillance Network (SSN) architectures in the sense of low cost, low latency, and high resolution. That research is extended here by (1) developing and applying a methodology to compare the performance of two or more algorithms against this problem, and (2) analyzing the effects of using reduced data sets in those searches. Computational experiments are presented in which the performance of five …

Deep Synthetic Noise Generation For Rgb-D Data Augmentation, Patrick Douglas Hammond Jun 2019

Deep Synthetic Noise Generation For Rgb-D Data Augmentation, Patrick Douglas Hammond

Theses and Dissertations

Considerable effort has been devoted to finding reliable methods of correcting noisy RGB-D images captured with unreliable depth-sensing technologies. Supervised neural networks have been shown to be capable of RGB-D image correction, but require copious amounts of carefully-corrected ground-truth data to train effectively. Data collection is laborious and time-intensive, especially for large datasets, and generation of ground-truth training data tends to be subject to human error. It might be possible to train an effective method on a relatively smaller dataset using synthetically damaged depth-data as input to the network, but this requires some understanding of the latent noise distribution of …

Performance Evaluation Of 3rd Normal Form Decompositions, Ben Mathew May 2019

Performance Evaluation Of 3rd Normal Form Decompositions, Ben Mathew

Theses and Dissertations

When a relational database is chosen, normalization theory is a set of guidelines that may lead to efficient database designs. Thus, normalization of tables in a database is a common process used for the analysis of relational databases. Sufficient normalization of databases aims to decompose existing relational tables in order to minimize database redundancy while preserving dependencies between attributes. It also facilitates correct insertion, deletion, and modification of data in the database. Given an un-normalized relational database, a redesign with no data redundancy and which is guaranteed to preserve dependencies is not always achievable. Previous studies have shown that it …

Data Gathering In Cognitive Radio Ad Hoc And Sensor Wireless Networks, Kimberly A. Brown May 2019

Data Gathering In Cognitive Radio Ad Hoc And Sensor Wireless Networks, Kimberly A. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Data gathering is a network communication task in which all of the network’s nodes send their individual messages to a distinguished sink node. In cognitive radio ad hoc and sensor wireless networks (CR-AHSWNs), unlicensed secondary users (SUs) opportunistically use channels when the licensed primary users are not using them. Therefore, the channels available to each SU vary with time and location, which makes the development of data gathering algorithms for CR-AHSWNs challenging.

In this thesis, a data gathering protocol for CR-AHSWNs is proposed. The protocol consists of several distributed SU action selection and channel selection algorithms. An algorithm that can …
