Quantum-Inspired Algorithm For Vehicle Sharing Problem, Whei Yeap Suen, Chun Yat Lee, Hoong Chuin Lau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recent hardware developments in quantum technologies have inspired a myriad of special-purpose hardware devices tasked to solve optimization problems. In this paper, we explore the application of Fujitsu’s quantum-inspired CMOS-based Digital Annealer (DA) in solving constrained routing problems arising in transportation and logistics. More precisely in this paper, we study the vehicle sharing problem and show that the DA as a QUBO solver can potentially fill the gap between two common methods: exact solvers like Cplex and heuristics. We benchmark the scalability and quality of solutions obtained by DA with Cplex and with a greedy heuristic. Our results show that …

Data augmentation has been an indispensable tool to improve the performance of deep neural networks, however the augmentation can hardly transfer among different tasks and datasets. Consequently, a recent trend is to adopt AutoML technique to learn proper augmentation policy without extensive hand-crafted tuning. In this paper, we propose an efficient differentiable search algorithm called Direct Differentiable Augmentation Search (DDAS). It exploits meta-learning with one-step gradient update and continuous relaxation to the expected training loss for efficient search. Our DDAS can achieve efficient augmentation search without relying on approximations such as Gumbel-Softmax or second order gradient approximation. To further reduce …

Food image segmentation is a critical and indispensible task for developing health-related applications such as estimating food calories and nutrients. Existing food image segmentation models are underperforming due to two reasons: (1) there is a lack of high quality food image datasets with fine-grained ingredient labels and pixel-wise location masks—the existing datasets either carry coarse ingredient labels or are small in size; and (2) the complex appearance of food makes it difficult to localize and recognize ingredients in food images, e.g., the ingredients may overlap one another in the same image, and the identical ingredient may appear distinctly in different …

Hateful and offensive content detection has been extensively explored in a single modality such as text. However, such toxic information could also be communicated via multimodal content such as online memes. Therefore, detecting multimodal hateful content has recently garnered much attention in academic and industry research communities. This paper aims to contribute to this emerging research topic by proposing DisMultiHate, which is a novel framework that performed the classification of multimodal hateful content. Specifically, DisMultiHate is designed to disentangle target entities in multimodal memes to improve the hateful content classification and explainability. We conduct extensive experiments on two publicly available …

This research addresses a new variant of the vehicle routing problem, called the two-echelon vehicle routing problem with time windows, covering options, and occasional drivers (2E-VRPTW-CO-OD). In this problem, two types of fleets are available to serve customers, city freighters and occasional drivers (ODs), while two delivery options are available to customers, home delivery and alternative delivery. For customers choosing the alternative delivery, their demands are delivered to one of the available covering locations for them to pick up. The objective of 2E-VRPTW-CO-OD is to minimize the total cost consisting of routing costs, connection costs, and compensations paid to ODs …

The management of third-party package dependencies is crucial to most technology stacks, with package managers acting as brokers to ensure that a verified package is correctly installed, configured, or removed from an application. Diversity in technology stacks has led to dozens of package ecosystems with their own management features. While recent studies have shown that developers struggle to migrate their dependencies, the common assumption is that package ecosystems are used without any issue. In this study, we explore 13 package ecosystems to understand whether their features correlate with the experience of their users. By studying experience through the questions that …

Smart contract, a term which was originally coined to refer to the automation of legal contracts in general, has recently seen much interest due to the advent of blockchain technology. Recently, the term is popularly used to refer to low-level code scripts running on a blockchain platform. Our study focuses exclusively on this subset of smart contracts. Such smart contracts have increasingly been gaining ground, finding numerous important applications (e.g., crowdfunding) in the real world. Despite the increasing popularity, smart contract development still remains somewhat a mystery to many developers largely due to its special design and applications. Are there …

Tax evasion is a serious economic problem for many countries, as it can undermine the government’s tax system and lead to an unfair business competition environment. Recent research has applied data analytics techniques to analyze and detect tax evasion behaviors of individual taxpayers. However, they have failed to support the analysis and exploration of the related party transaction tax evasion (RPTTE) behaviors (e.g., transfer pricing), where a group of taxpayers is involved. In this paper, we present TaxThemis, an interactive visual analytics system to help tax officers mine and explore suspicious tax evasion groups through analyzing heterogeneous tax-related data. A …

With the wide applications of algorithmic trading, it has become critical for traders to build a winning trading algorithm to beat the market. However, due to the lack of efficient tools, traders mainly rely on their memory to manually compare the algorithm instances of a trading algorithm and further select the best trading algorithm instance for the real trading deployment. We work closely with industry practitioners to discover and consolidate user requirements and develop an interactive visual analytics system for trading algorithm optimization. Structured expert interviews are conducted to evaluateTradAOand a representative case study is documented for illustrating the system …
Burst-Induced Multi-Armed Bandit For Learning Recommendation, Rodrigo Alves, Antoine Ledent, Marius Kloft
Burst-Induced Multi-Armed Bandit For Learning Recommendation, Rodrigo Alves, Antoine Ledent, Marius Kloft
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we introduce a non-stationary and context-free Multi-Armed Bandit (MAB) problem and a novel algorithm (which we refer to as BMAB) to solve it. The problem is context-free in the sense that no side information about users or items is needed. We work in a continuous-time setting where each timestamp corresponds to a visit by a user and a corresponding decision regarding recommendation. The main novelty is that we model the reward distribution as a consequence of variations in the intensity of the activity, and thereby we assist the exploration/exploitation dilemma by exploring the temporal dynamics of the …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Person Re-IDentification (ReID) aims at re-identifying persons from non-overlapping cameras. Existing person ReID studies focus on horizontal-view ReID tasks, in which the person images are captured by the cameras from a (nearly) horizontal view. In this work we introduce a new ReID task, bird-view person ReID, which aims at searching for a person in a gallery of horizontal-view images with the query images taken from a bird's-eye view, i.e., an elevated view of an object from above. The task is important because there are a large number of video surveillance cameras capturing persons from such an elevated view at public …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Occluded person re-identification (ReID) aims at re-identifying occluded pedestrians from occluded or holistic images taken across multiple cameras. Current state-of-the-art (SOTA) occluded ReID models rely on some auxiliary modules, including pose estimation, feature pyramid and graph matching modules, to learn multi-scale and/or part-level features to tackle the occlusion challenges. This unfortunately leads to complex ReID models that (i) fail to generalize to challenging occlusions of diverse appearance, shape or size, and (ii) become ineffective in handling non-occluded pedestrians. However, real-world ReID applications typically have highly diverse occlusions and involve a hybrid of occluded and non-occluded pedestrians. To address these two …

Missing Data Imputation For Solar Yield Prediction Using Temporal Multi-Modal Variational Auto-Encoder, Meng Shen, Huaizheng Zhang, Yixin Cao, Fan Yang, Yonggang Wen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The accurate and robust prediction of short-term solar power generation is significant for the management of modern smart grids, where solar power has become a major energy source due to its green and economical nature. However, the solar yield prediction can be difficult to conduct in the real world where hardware and network issues can make the sensors unreachable. Such data missing problem is so prevalent that it degrades the performance of deployed prediction models and even fails the model execution. In this paper, we propose a novel temporal multi-modal variational auto-encoder (TMMVAE) model, to enhance the robustness of short-term …

The Internet of Things (IoT) is commonly deployed with devices of limited power and computation capability. A centralized IoT architecture provides a simplified management for IoT system but brings redundancy by the unnecessary data traffic with a data center. A decentralized IoT reduces the cost on data traffic and is resilient to the single-point-of failure. The blockchain technique has attracted a large amount of research, which is redeemed as a perspective of decentralized IoT system infrastructure. It also brings new privacy challenges for that the blockchain is a public ledger of all digital events executed and shared among all participants. …

Privacy preserving mechanisms are essential for protecting data in IoT environments. This is particularly challenging as IoT environments often contain heterogeneous resource-constrained devices. One method for protecting privacy is to encrypt data with a pattern or metadata. To prevent information leakage, an evaluation using the pattern must be performed before the data can be retrieved. However, the computational costs associated with typical privacy preserving mechanisms can be costly. This makes such methods ill-suited for resource-constrained devices, as the high energy consumption will quickly drain the battery. This work solves this challenging problem by proposing SyLPEnIoT – Symmetric Lightweight Predicate Encryption …

Route Tapestries: Navigating 360° Virtual Tour Videos Using Slit-Scan Visualizations, Jiannan Li, Jiahe Lyu, Maurício Sousa, Ravin Balakrishnan, Anthony Tang, Tovi Grossman
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
An increasingly popular way of experiencing remote places is by viewing 360° virtual tour videos, which show the surrounding view while traveling through an environment. However, finding particular locations in these videos can be difficult because current interfaces rely on distorted frame previews for navigation. To alleviate this usability issue, we propose Route Tapestries, continuous orthographic-perspective projection of scenes along camera routes. We first introduce an algorithm for automatically constructing Route Tapestries from a 360° video, inspired by the slit-scan photography technique. We then present a desktop video player interface using a Route Tapestry timeline for navigation. An online evaluation …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Improving the performance of transportation network is a crucial task in traffic management. In this paper, we start with a cooperative routing problem, which aims to minimize the chance of road network breakdown. To address this problem, we propose a subgradient method, which can be naturally implemented as a semi-centralized pricing approach. Particularly, each road link adopts the pricing scheme to calculate and adjust the local toll regularly, while the vehicles update their routes to minimize the toll costs by exploiting the global toll information. To prevent the potential oscillation brought by the subgradient method, we introduce a heavy-ball method …

Audio descriptions (ADs) can increase access to videos for blind people. Researchers have explored different mechanisms for generating ADs, with some of the most recent studies involving paid novices; to improve the quality of their ADs, novices receive feedback from reviewers. However, reviewer feedback is not instantaneous. To explore the potential for real-time feedback through automation, in this paper, we analyze 1,120 comments that 40 sighted novices received from a sighted or a blind reviewer. We find that feedback patterns tend to fall under four themes: (i) Quality; commenting on different AD quality variables, (ii) Speech Act; the utterance or …

From Continuity To Editability: Inverting Gans With Consecutive Images, Yangyang Xu, Yong Du, Wenpeng Xiao, Xuemiao Xu, Shengfeng He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Existing GAN inversion methods are stuck in a paradox that the inverted codes can either achieve high-fidelity reconstruction, or retain the editing capability. Having only one of them clearly cannot realize real image editing. In this paper, we resolve this paradox by introducing consecutive images (e.g., video frames or the same person with different poses) into the inversion process. The rationale behind our solution is that the continuity of consecutive images leads to inherent editable directions. This inborn property is used for two unique purposes: 1) regularizing the joint inversion process, such that each of the inverted codes is semantically …

Differentiated Learning For Multi-Modal Domain Adaptation, Jianming Lv, Kaijie Liu, Shengfeng He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Directly deploying a trained multi-modal classifier to a new environment usually leads to poor performance due to the well-known domain shift problem. Existing multi-modal domain adaptation methods treated each modality equally and optimize the sub-models of different modalities synchronously. However, as observed in this paper, the degrees of domain shift in different modalities are usually diverse. We propose a novel Differentiated Learning framework to make use of the diversity between multiple modalities for more effective domain adaptation. Specifically, we model the classifiers of different modalities as a group of teacher/student sub-models, and a novel Prototype based Reliability Measurement is presented …

From Contexts To Locality: Ultra-High Resolution Image Segmentation Via Locality-Aware Contextual Correlation, Qi Li, Weixiang Yang, Wenxi Liu, Yuanlong Yu, Shengfeng He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Ultra-high resolution image segmentation has raised increasing interests in recent years due to its realistic applications. In this paper, we innovate the widely used high-resolution image segmentation pipeline, in which an ultrahigh resolution image is partitioned into regular patches for local segmentation and then the local results are merged into a high-resolution semantic mask. In particular, we introduce a novel locality-aware contextual correlation based segmentation model to process local patches, where the relevance between local patch and its various contexts are jointly and complementarily utilized to handle the semantic regions with large variations. Additionally, we present a contextual semantics refinement …

Towards Enriching Responses With Crowd-Sourced Knowledge For Task-Oriented Dialogue, Yingxu He, Lizi Liao, Zheng Zhang, Tat-Seng Chua
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Task-oriented dialogue agents are built to assist users in completing various tasks. Generating appropriate responses for satisfactory task completion is the ultimate goal. Hence, as a convenient and straightforward way, metrics such as success rate, inform rate etc., have been widely leveraged to evaluate the generated responses. However, beyond task completion, there are several other factors that largely affect user satisfaction, which remain under-explored. In this work, we focus on analyzing different agent behavior patterns that lead to higher user satisfaction scores. Based on the findings, we design a neural response generation model EnRG. It naturally combines the power of …

Adversarial Attacks And Mitigation For Anomaly Detectors Of Cyber-Physical Systems, Yifan Jia, Jingyi Wang, Christopher M. Poskitt, Sudipta Chattopadhyay, Jun Sun, Yuqi Chen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The threats faced by cyber-physical systems (CPSs) in critical infrastructure have motivated research into a multitude of attack detection mechanisms, including anomaly detectors based on neural network models. The effectiveness of anomaly detectors can be assessed by subjecting them to test suites of attacks, but less consideration has been given to adversarial attackers that craft noise specifically designed to deceive them. While successfully applied in domains such as images and audio, adversarial attacks are much harder to implement in CPSs due to the presence of other built-in defence mechanisms such as rule checkers (or invariant checkers). In this work, we …

Semantic interpretability and visual expressivity are important objectives in exploratory analysis of text. On the one hand, while some documents may have explicit categories, we could develop a better understanding of a corpus by studying its finer-grained structures, which may be latent. By inferring latent topics and discovering keywords associated with each topic, one obtains a semantic interpretation of the corpus. One the other hand, by visualizing documents, latent topics, and category labels on the same plot, one gains a bird’s eye view of the relationships among documents, topics, and various categories. Semantic visualization is a class of methods that …

Although established marketing techniques have been applied to design more effective health campaigns, more often than not, the same message is broadcasted to large populations, irrespective of unique characteristics. As individual digital device use has increased, so have individual digital footprints, creating potential opportunities for targeted digital health interventions. We propose a novel precision public health campaign framework to structure and standardize the process of designing and delivering tailored health messages to target particular population segments using social media–targeted advertising tools. Our framework consists of five stages: defining a campaign goal, priority audience, and evaluation metrics; splitting the target audience …

This study proposes a systematic approach to the construction of a simulation model to support decision-making concerning the capacity limit and staffing configurations at the paediatric eye clinic in Singapore under the COVID-19 pandemic situation. During the pandemic, the clinic must ensure that the operations are aligned to the safe-distancing regulations put in place by the Ministry of Health while coping with the demand. We developed simulation models to examine the ‘asis’ process and proposed numerous ‘to-be’ processes for new clinic configurations to operate under the pandemic conditions. We combined scenario-thinking and simulation optimization to determine the additional manpower and …

Due to the rise of AI applications, machine learning (ML) libraries, often written in Python, have become far more accessible. ML libraries tend to be updated periodically, which may deprecate existing APIs, making it necessary for application developers to update their usages. In this paper, we build a tool to automate deprecated API usage updates. We first present an empirical study to better understand how updates of deprecated ML API usages in Python can be done. The study involves a dataset of 112 deprecated APIs from Scikit-Learn, TensorFlow, and PyTorch. Guided by the findings of our empirical study, we propose …
