Querying Recurrent Convoys Over Trajectory Data, Munkh-Erdene Yadamjav, Zhifeng Bao, Baihua Zheng, Farhana M. Choudhury, Hanan Samet

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Moving objects equipped with location-positioning devices continuously generate a large amount of spatio-temporal trajectory data. An interesting finding over a trajectory stream is a group of objects that are travelling together for a certain period of time. Existing studies on mining co-moving objects do not consider an important correlation between co-moving objects, which is the reoccurrence of the movement pattern. In this study, we define a problem of finding recurrent pattern of co-moving objects from streaming trajectories and propose an efficient solution that enables us to discover recent co-moving object patterns repeated within a given time period. Experimental results on …

The Future Of Work Now: The Multi-Faceted Mall Security Guard At A Multi-Faceted Jewel, Thomas H. Davenport, Steven M. Miller

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

One of the most frequently-used phrases at business events these days is “the future of work.” It’s increasingly clear that artificial intelligence and other new technologies will bring substantial changes in work tasks and business processes. But while these changes are predicted for the future, they’re already present in many organizations for many different jobs. The job and incumbents described below are an example of this phenomenon. Steve Miller of Singapore Management University and I co-authored the story.

Privacy-Preserving Outsourced Calculation Toolkit In The Cloud, Ximeng Liu, Robert H. Deng, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo, Yang Yang, Hwee Hwa Pang Sep 2020

Privacy-Preserving Outsourced Calculation Toolkit In The Cloud, Ximeng Liu, Robert H. Deng, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo, Yang Yang, Hwee Hwa Pang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we propose a privacy-preserving outsourced calculation toolkit, Pockit, designed to allow data owners to securely outsource their data to the cloud for storage. The outsourced encrypted data can be processed by the cloud server to achieve commonly-used plaintext arithmetic operations without involving additional servers. Specifically, we design both signed and unsigned integer circuits using a fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) scheme, construct a new packing technique (hereafter referred to as integer packing), and extend the secure circuits to its packed version. This achieves significant improvements in performance compared with the original secure signed/unsigned integer circuit. The secure integer …

Bus Frequency Optimization: When Waiting Time Matters In User Satisfaction, Songsong Mo, Zhifeng Bao, Baihua Zheng, Zhiyong Peng Sep 2020

Bus Frequency Optimization: When Waiting Time Matters In User Satisfaction, Songsong Mo, Zhifeng Bao, Baihua Zheng, Zhiyong Peng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Reorganizing bus frequency to cater for the actual travel demand can save the cost of the public transport system significantly. Many, if not all, existing studies formulate this as a bus frequency optimization problem which tries to minimize passengers’ average waiting time. However, many investigations have confirmed that the user satisfaction drops faster as the waiting time increases. Consequently, this paper studies the bus frequency optimization problem considering the user satisfaction. Specifically, for the first time to our best knowledge, we study how to schedule the buses such that the total number of passengers who could receive their bus services …

Fasts: A Satisfaction-Boosting Bus Scheduling Assistant (Demo), Momo Song, Zhifeng Bao, Baihua Zheng, Zhiyong Peng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we demonstrate a satisfaction-boosting bus scheduling assistant called FASTS, which assists users to find an optimal bus schedule. FASTS performs bus scheduling based on the constraints specified by the user in either a coarse-grained or a fine-grained manner, supports different explorations with a varying number of constraints, and provides analysis to quantify the performance of bus schedules and presents the results in a visually pleasing way. We demonstrate FASTS using real-world bus routes (396 routes) and one-week bus touch-on/touch-off records (28 million trip records) in Singapore.

On Modeling Labor Markets For Fine-Grained Insights, Hendrik Santoso Sugiarto, Ee-Peng Lim Sep 2020

On Modeling Labor Markets For Fine-Grained Insights, Hendrik Santoso Sugiarto, Ee-Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The labor market consists of job seekers looking for jobs, and job openings waiting for applications. Classical labor market models assume that salary is the primary factor explaining why job-seekers select certain jobs. In practice, job seeker behavior is much more complex and there are other factors that should be considered. In this paper, we therefore propose the Probabilistic Labor Model (PLM) which considers salary satisfaction, topic preference matching, and accessibility as important criteria for job seekers to decide when they apply for jobs. We also determine the user and job latent variables for each criterion and define a graphical …

Urban Scale Trade Area Characterization For Commercial Districts With Cellular Footprints, Yi Zhao, Zimu Zhou, Xu Wang, Tongtong Liu, Zheng Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Understanding customer mobility patterns to commercial districts is crucial for urban planning, facility management, and business strategies. Trade areas are a widely applied measure to quantify where the visitors are from. Traditional trade area analysis is limited to small-scale or store-level studies, because information such as visits to competitor commercial entities and place of residence is collected by labour-intensive questionnaires or heavily biased location-based social media data. In this article, we propose CellTradeMap, a novel district-level trade area analysis framework using mobile flow records (MFRs), a type of fine-grained cellular network data. We show that compared to traditional cellular data …

Persona Perception Scale: Development And Exploratory Validation Of An Instrument For Evaluating Individuals' Perceptions Of Personas, Joni Salminen, Joao M. Santos, Haewoon Kwak, Jisun An, Soon-Gyo Jung

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Although used in many domains, the evaluation of personas is difficult due to the lack of validated measurement instruments. To tackle this challenge, we propose the Persona Perception Scale (PPS), a survey instrument for evaluating how individuals perceive personas. We develop the scale by reviewing relevant literature from social psychology, persona studies, and Human-Computer Interaction to find relevant constructs and items for measuring persona perceptions. Following initial pilot testing, we conduct an exploratory validation of the scale with 412 respondents and find that the constructs and items of the scale perform satisfactorily for deployment. The research has implications for both …

Zone Path Construction (Zac) Based Approaches For Effective Real-Time Ridesharing, Meghna Lowalekar, Pradeep Varakantham, Patrick Jaillet

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Real-time ridesharing systems such as UberPool, Lyft Line, GrabShare have become hugely popular as they reduce the costs for customers, improve per trip revenue for drivers and reduce traffic on the roads by grouping customers with similar itineraries. The key challenge in these systems is to group the "right" requests to travel together in the "right" available vehicles in real-time, so that the objective (e.g., requests served, revenue or delay) is optimized. This challenge has been addressed in existing work by: (i) generating as many relevant feasible (with respect to the available delay for customers) combinations of requests as possible …

Attribute-Based Encryption For Cloud Computing Access Control: A Survey, Yinghui Zhang, Robert H. Deng, Shengmin Xu, Jianfei Sun, Qi Li, Dong Zheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Attribute-based encryption (ABE) for cloud computing access control is reviewed in this article. A taxonomy and comprehensive assessment criteria of ABE are first proposed. In the taxonomy, ABE schemes are assorted into key-policy ABE (KP-ABE) schemes, ciphertext-policy ABE (CP-ABE) schemes, anti-quantum ABE schemes, and generic constructions. In accordance with cryptographically functional features, CP-ABE is further divided into nine subcategories with regard to basic functionality, revocation, accountability, policy hiding, policy updating, multi-authority, hierarchy, offline computation, and outsourced computation. In addition, a systematical methodology for discussing and comparing existing ABE schemes is proposed. For KP-ABE and each type of CP-ABE, the corresponding …

Pricing And Equilibrium In On-Demand Ride-Pooling Markets, Jintao Ke, Hai Yang, Xinwei Li, Hai Wang, Jieping Ye

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the recent rapid growth of technology-enabled mobility services, ride-sourcing platforms, such as Uber and DiDi, have launched commercial on-demand ride-pooling programs that allow drivers to serve more than one passenger request in each ride. Without requiring the prearrangement of trip schedules, these programs match on-demand passenger requests with vehicles that have vacant seats. Ride-pooling programs are expected to offer benefits for both individual passengers in the form of cost savings and for society in the form of traffic alleviation and emission reduction. In addition to some exogenous variables and environments for ride-sourcing market, such as city size and population …

A Genetic Algorithm To Minimise Number Of Vehicles In An Electric Vehicle Routing Problem, Kiian Leong Bertran Queck, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Electric Vehicles (EVs) and charging infrastructure are starting to become commonplace in major cities around the world. For logistics providers to adopt an EV fleet, there are many factors up for consideration, such as route planning for EVs with limited travel range as well as long-term planning of fleet size. In this paper, we present a genetic algorithm to perform route planning that minimises the number of vehicles required. Specifically, we discuss the challenges on the violations of constraints in the EV routing problem (EVRP) arising from applying genetic algorithm operators. To overcome the challenges, techniques specific to addressing the …

Smart Contract Repair, Xiao Liang Yu, Omar Al-Bataineh, David Lo, Abhik Roychoudhury Sep 2020

Smart Contract Repair, Xiao Liang Yu, Omar Al-Bataineh, David Lo, Abhik Roychoudhury

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Smart contracts are automated or self-enforcing contracts that can be used to exchange assets without having to place trust in third parties. Many commercial transactions use smart contracts due to their potential benefits in terms of secure peer-to-peer transactions independent of external parties. Experience shows that many commonly used smart contracts are vulnerable to serious malicious attacks, which may enable attackers to steal valuable assets of involving parties. There is, therefore, a need to apply analysis and automated repair techniques to detect and repair bugs in smart contracts before being deployed. In this work, we present the first general-purpose automated …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Sharing digital medical records on public cloud storage via mobile devices facilitates patients (doctors) to get (offer) medical treatment of high quality and efficiency. However, challenges such as data privacy protection, flexible data sharing, efficient authority delegation, computation efficiency optimization, are remaining toward achieving practical fine-grained access control in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system. In this work, we propose an innovative access control model and a fine-grained data sharing mechanism for EMR, which simultaneously achieves the above-mentioned features and is suitable for resource-constrained mobile devices. In the model, complex computation is outsourced to public cloud servers, leaving almost no …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As a widely used privacy-preserving technique for cryptocurrencies, Stealth Address constitutes a key component of Ring Confidential Transaction (RingCT) protocol and it was adopted by Monero, one of the most popular privacy-centric cryptocurrencies. Recently, Liu et al. [EuroS&P 2019] pointed out a flaw in the current widely used stealth address algorithm that once a derived secret key is compromised, the damage will spread to the corresponding master secret key, and all the derived secret keys thereof. To address this issue, Liu et al. introduced Key-Insulated and Privacy-Preserving Signature Scheme with Publicly Derived Public Key (PDPKS scheme), which captures the functionality, …

Improving airport collaborative decision making is at the heart of airport operations centers (APOCs) recently established in several major European airports. In this paper, we describe a project commissioned by Eurocontrol, the organization in charge of the safety and seamless flow of European air traffic. The project’s goal was to examine the opportunities offered by the colocation and real-time data sharing in the APOC at London’s Heathrow airport, arguably the most advanced of its type in Europe. We developed and implemented a pilot study of a real-time data-sharing and collaborative decision-making process, selected to improve the efficiency of Heathrow’s operations. …

Time-Warped Sparse Non-Negative Factorization For Functional Data Analysis, Chen Zhang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Fugee Tsung Sep 2020

Time-Warped Sparse Non-Negative Factorization For Functional Data Analysis, Chen Zhang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Fugee Tsung

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This article proposes a novel time-warped sparse non-negative factorization method for functional data analysis. The proposed method on the one hand guarantees the extracted basis functions and their coefficients to be positive and interpretable, and on the other hand is able to handle weakly correlated functions with different features. Furthermore, the method incorporates time warping into factorization and hence allows the extracted basis functions of different samples to have temporal deformations. An efficient framework of estimation algorithms is proposed based on a greedy variable selection approach. Numerical studies together with case studies on real-world data demonstrate the efficacy and applicability …

Extracting Deep Features From Short Ecg Signals For Early Atrial Fibrillation Detection, Xiaodan Wu, Yumeng Zheng, Chao-Hsien Chu, Zhen He Sep 2020

Extracting Deep Features From Short Ecg Signals For Early Atrial Fibrillation Detection, Xiaodan Wu, Yumeng Zheng, Chao-Hsien Chu, Zhen He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Atrial Fibrillation (AF) at an early stage has a short duration and is sometimes asymptomatic, making it difficult to detect. Although the use of mobile sensing devices has provided the possibility of real-time cardiac detection, it is highly susceptible to the noise signals generated by body movement. Therefore, it is of great importance to study early AF detection for mobile terminals with noise immunity. Extracting effective features is critical to AF detection, but most existing studies used shallow time, frequency or time-frequency energy (TFE) features with weak representation that need to rely on long ECG signals to capture the variation …

An Ecosystem Approach To Ethical Ai And Data Use: Experimental Reflections, Mark Findlay, Josephine Seah

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

While we have witnessed a rapid growth of ethics documents meant to guide artificial intelligence (AI) development, the promotion of AI ethics has nonetheless proceeded with little input from AI practitioners themselves. Given the proliferation of AI for Social Good initiatives, this is an emerging gap that needs to be addressed in order to develop more meaningful ethical approaches to AI use and development. This paper offers a methodology-a 'shared fairness' approach-aimed at identifying AI practitioners' needs when it comes to confronting and resolving ethical challenges and to find a third space where their operational language can be married with …

Good traders remove emotion from the decision-making process. Automated trading algorithms have enabled this, allowing one to trade round the clock, and without the constant need to monitor one’s investments. But software has gremlins. Given the vast amounts of money involved in such trades, it was only a matter of time before disputes involving automated trading software came before the courts. The decision in Quoine v B2C2 (“Quoine”) represents the first time an apex court in the Commonwealth has ruled on the applicability of contractual principles to situations involving automated trading software.

Statistical And Deep Learning Models For Software Engineering Corpora, Van Duc Thong Hoang Aug 2020

Statistical And Deep Learning Models For Software Engineering Corpora, Van Duc Thong Hoang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation focuses on proposing statistical and deep learning models for software engineering corpora to detect bugs in software system. The dissertation aims to solve three main software engineering problems, i.e., bug localization (locating the potential buggy source files in a software project given a bug report or failing test cases), just-in-time defect prediction (identifying the potential defective commits as they are introduced into a version control system), and bug fixing patch identification (identifying commits repairing bugs for their propagation to parallelly maintained versions) to save developers’ time and e↵ort in improving software system quality. Moreover, I also propose a …

Novel Deep Learning Methods Combined With Static Analysis For Source Code Processing, Duy Quoc Nghi Bui

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

It is desirable to combine machine learning and program analysis so that one can leverage the best of both to increase the performance of software analytics. On one side, machine learning can analyze the source code of thousands of well-written software projects that can uncover patterns that partially characterize software that is reliable, easy to read, and easy to maintain. On the other side, the program analysis can be used to define rigorous and unique rules that are only available in programming languages, which enrich the representation of source code and help the machine learning to capture the patterns better. …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper reviews the video extreme super-resolution challenge associated with the AIM 2020 workshop at ECCV 2020. Common scaling factors for learned video super-resolution (VSR) do not go beyond factor 4. Missing information can be restored well in this region, especially in HR videos, where the high-frequency content mostly consists of texture details. The task in this challenge is to upscale videos with an extreme factor of 16, which results in more serious degradations that also affect the structural integrity of the videos. A single pixel in the lowresolution (LR) domain corresponds to 256 pixels in the high-resolution (HR) domain. …

Spark: Spatial-Aware Online Incremental Attack Against Visual Tracking, Qing Guo, Xiaofei Xie, Felix Juefei-Xu, Lei Ma, Zhongguo Li, Wanli Xue, Wei Feng, Yang Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Adversarial attacks of deep neural networks have been intensively studied on image, audio, and natural language classification tasks. Nevertheless, as a typical while important real-world application, the adversarial attacks of online video tracking that traces an object’s moving trajectory instead of its category are rarely explored. In this paper, we identify a new task for the adversarial attack to visual tracking: online generating imperceptible perturbations that mislead trackers along with an incorrect (Untargeted Attack, UA) or specified trajectory (Targeted Attack, TA). To this end, we first propose a spatial-aware basic attack by adapting existing attack methods, i.e., FGSM, BIM, and …

Intersentiment: Combining Deep Neural Models On Interaction And Sentiment For Review Rating Prediction, Shi Feng, Kaisong Song, Daling Wang, Wei Gao, Yifei Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Review rating prediction is commonly approached from the perspective of either Collaborative Filtering (CF) or Sentiment Classification (SC). CF-based approach usually resorts to matrix factorization based on user–item interaction, and does not fully utilize the valuable review text features. In contrast, SC-based approach is focused on mining review content, but can just incorporate some user- and product-level features, and fails to capture sufficient interactions between them represented typically in a sparse matrix as CF can do. In this paper, we propose a novel, extensible review rating prediction model called InterSentiment by bridging the user-product interaction model and the sentiment model …

Commanding And Re-Dictation: Developing Eyes-Free Voice-Based Interaction For Editing Dictated Text, Debjyoti Ghosh, Can Liu, Shengdong Zhao, Kotaro Hara

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Existing voice-based interfaces have limited support for text editing, especially when seeing the text is difficult, e.g., while walking or cooking. This research develops voice interaction techniques for eyes-free text editing. First, with a Wizard-of-Oz study, we identified two primary user strategies: using commands, e.g., “replace go with goes” and re-dictating over an erroneous portion, e.g., correcting “he go there” by saying “he goes there.” To support these user strategies with an actual system implementation, we developed two eyes-free voice interaction techniques, Commanding and Re-dictation, and evaluated them with a controlled experiment. Results showed that while Re-dictation performs significantly better …

Learning Transferrable Parameters For Long-Tailed Sequential User Behavior Modeling, Jianwen Yin, Chenghao Liu, Weiqing Wang, Jianling Sun, Steven C. H. Hoi Aug 2020

Learning Transferrable Parameters For Long-Tailed Sequential User Behavior Modeling, Jianwen Yin, Chenghao Liu, Weiqing Wang, Jianling Sun, Steven C. H. Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Sequential user behavior modeling plays a crucial role in online user-oriented services, such as product purchasing, news feed consumption, and online advertising. The performance of sequential modeling heavily depends on the scale and quality of historical behaviors. However, the number of user behaviors inherently follows a long-tailed distribution, which has been seldom explored. In this work, we argue that focusing on tail users could bring more benefits and address the long tails issue by learning transferrable parameters from both optimization and feature perspectives. Specifically, we propose a gradient alignment optimizer and adopt an adversarial training scheme to facilitate knowledge transfer …

A Unified Framework For Sparse Online Learning, Peilin Zhao, Dayong Wong, Pengcheng Wu, Steven C. H. Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The amount of data in our society has been exploding in the era of big data. This article aims to address several open challenges in big data stream classification. Many existing studies in data mining literature follow the batch learning setting, which suffers from low efficiency and poor scalability. To tackle these challenges, we investigate a unified online learning framework for the big data stream classification task. Different from the existing online data stream classification techniques, we propose a unified Sparse Online Classification (SOC) framework. Based on SOC, we derive a second-order online learning algorithm and a cost-sensitive sparse online …
