In this modern era, traffic congestion has become a major source of negative economic and environmental impact for urban areas worldwide. One of the most efficient ways to mitigate traffic congestion is through future traffic prediction. The field of traffic prediction has evolved greatly ever since its inception in the late 70s. Earlier studies mainly use classical statistical models such as ARIMA and its variants. Then, researchers started to focus on machine learning models due to their power and flexibility. As theoretical and technological advances emerge, we enter the era of deep neural network, which gained popularity due to its …

Online synchronous tutoring allows for immediate engagement between instructors and audiences over distance. However, tutoring physical skills remains challenging because current telepresence approaches may not allow for adequate spatial awareness, viewpoint control of the demonstration activities scattered across an entire work area, and the instructor’s sufficient awareness of the audience. We present Asteroids, a novel approach for tangible robotic telepresence, to enable workbench-scale physical embodiments of remote people and tangible interactions by the instructor. With Asteroids, the audience can actively control a swarm of mini-telepresence robots, change camera positions, and switch to other robots’ viewpoints. Demonstrators can perceive the audiences’ …

While Deep Neural Network (DNN) models have transformed machine vision capabilities, their extremely high computational complexity and model sizes present a formidable deployment roadblock for AIoT applications. We show that the complexity-vs-accuracy-vs-communication tradeoffs for such DNN models can be significantly addressed via a novel, lightweight form of “collaborative machine intelligence” that requires only runtime changes to the inference process. In our proposed approach, called ComAI, the DNN pipelines of different vision sensors share intermediate processing state with one another, effectively providing hints about objects located within their mutually-overlapping Field-of-Views (FoVs). CoMAI uses two novel techniques: (a) a secondary shallow ML …

Verifiable Searchable Encryption Framework Against Insider Keyword-Guessing Attack In Cloud Storage, Yinbin Miao, Robert H. Deng, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo, Ximeng Liu, Hongwei Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Searchable encryption (SE) allows cloud tenants to retrieve encrypted data while preserving data confidentiality securely. Many SE solutions have been designed to improve efficiency and security, but most of them are still susceptible to insider Keyword-Guessing Attacks (KGA), which implies that the internal attackers can guess the candidate keywords successfully in an off-line manner. Also in existing SE solutions, a semi-honest-but-curious cloud server may deliver incorrect search results by performing only a fraction of retrieval operations honestly (e.g., to save storage space). To address these two challenging issues, we first construct the basic Verifiable SE Framework (VSEF), which can withstand …

Appropriate gestures can enhance message delivery and audience engagement in both daily communication and public presentations. In this paper, we contribute a visual analytic approach that assists professional public speaking coaches in improving their practice of gesture training through analyzing presentation videos. Manually checking and exploring gesture usage in the presentation videos is often tedious and time-consuming. There lacks an efficient method to help users conduct gesture exploration, which is challenging due to the intrinsically temporal evolution of gestures and their complex correlation to speech content. In this paper, we propose GestureLens, a visual analytics system to facilitate gesture-based and …

Transfer learning plays an essential role in Deep Learning, which can remarkably improve the performance of the target domain, whose training data is not sufficient. Our work explores beyond the common practice of transfer learning with a single pre-trained model. We focus on the task of Vietnamese sentiment classification and propose LIFA, a framework to learn a unified embedding from several pre-trained models. We further propose two more LIFA variants that encourage the pre-trained models to either cooperate or compete with one another. Studying these variants sheds light on the success of LIFA by showing that sharing knowledge among the …

Wilderness search and rescue (WSAR) is a command-and-control activity where a Command team manages field teams scattered across a large area looking for a lost person. The challenge is that it can be difficult for Command to maintain awareness of field teams and the conditions of the field. We designed RescueCASTR, an interface that explores the idea of deploying field teams with wearable cameras that stream live video or sequential photos periodically to Command that aid contextual awareness. We ran a remote user study with WSAR managers to understand the opportunities and challenges of such a system. We found that …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
How-to videos are often shot using camera angles that may not be optimal for learning motor tasks, with a prevalent use of third-person perspective. We present immersivePOV, an approach to film how-to videos from an immersive first-person perspective using a head-mounted 360° action camera. immersivePOV how-to videos can be viewed in a Virtual Reality headset, giving the viewer an eye-level viewpoint with three Degrees of Freedom. We evaluated our approach with two everyday motor tasks against a baseline first-person perspective and a third-person perspective. In a between-subjects study, participants were assigned to watch the task videos and then replicate the …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Food computing has recently attracted considerable research attention due to its significance for health risk analysis. In the literature, the majority of research efforts are dedicated to food recognition. Relatively few works are conducted for food counting and segmentation, which are essential for portion size estimation. This paper presents a deep neural network, named SibNet, for simultaneous counting and extraction of food instances from an image. The problem is challenging due to varying size and shape of food as well as arbitrary viewing angle of camera, not to mention that food instances often occlude each other. SibNet is novel for …

Technical Q&A sites (e.g., Stack Overflow(SO)) are important resources for developers to search for knowledge about technical problems. Search engines provided in Q&A sites and information retrieval approaches have limited capabilities to retrieve relevant questions when queries are imprecisely specified, such as missing important technical details (e.g., the user's preferred programming languages). Although many automatic query expansion approaches have been proposed to improve the quality of queries by expanding queries with relevant terms, the information missed is not identified. Moreover, without user involvement, the existing query expansion approaches may introduce unexpected terms and lead to undesired results. In this paper, …

On Size-Oriented Long-Tailed Graph Classification Of Graph Neural Networks, Zemin Liu, Qiheng Mao, Chenghao Liu, Yuan Fang, Jianling Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The prevalence of graph structures attracts a surge of investigation on graph data, enabling several downstream tasks such as multigraph classification. However, in the multi-graph setting, graphs usually follow a long-tailed distribution in terms of their sizes, i.e., the number of nodes. In particular, a large fraction of tail graphs usually have small sizes. Though recent graph neural networks (GNNs) can learn powerful graph-level representations, they treat the graphs uniformly and marginalize the tail graphs which suffer from the lack of distinguishable structures, resulting in inferior performance on tail graphs. To alleviate this concern, in this paper we propose a …

Trust In Robotics: A Multi-Staged Decision-Making Approach To Robots In Community, Wenxi Zhang, Willow Wong, Mark Findlay
Centre for AI & Data Governance (2019-2025)
Pivoting on the desired outcome of social good within the wider robotics ecosystem, trust is identified as the central adhesive of the HRI interface. However, building trust between humans and robots involves more than improving the machine’s technical reliability or trustworthiness in function. This paper presents a holistic, community-based approach to trust-building, where trust is understood as a multifaceted and multi-staged looped relation that depends heavily on context and human perceptions. Building on past literature that identifies dispositional and learned stages of trust, our proposed Decision to Trust model considers more extensively the human and situational factors influencing how trust …

Clusters of viral pneumonia occurrences over a short period may be a harbinger of an outbreak or pandemic. Rapid and accurate detection of viral pneumonia using chest X-rays can be of significant value for large-scale screening and epidemic prevention, particularly when other more sophisticated imaging modalities are not readily accessible. However, the emergence of novel mutated viruses causes a substantial dataset shift, which can greatly limit the performance of classification-based approaches. In this paper, we formulate the task of differentiating viral pneumonia from non-viral pneumonia and healthy controls into a one-class classification-based anomaly detection problem. We therefore propose the confidence-aware …

Neuron Coverage-Guided Domain Generalization, Chris Xing Tian, Haoliang Li, Xiaofei Xie, Yang Liu, Shiqi Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper focuses on the domain generalization task where domain knowledge is unavailable, and even worse, only samples from a single domain can be utilized during training. Our motivation originates from the recent progresses in deep neural network (DNN) testing, which has shown that maximizing neuron coverage of DNN can help to explore possible defects of DNN (i.e.,misclassification). More specifically, by treating the DNN as a program and each neuron as a functional point of the code, during the network training we aim to improve the generalization capability by maximizing the neuron coverage of DNN with the gradient similarity regularization …

The Android operating system is frequently updated, with each version bringing a new set of APIs. New versions may involve API deprecation; Android apps using deprecated APIs need to be updated to ensure the apps’ compatibility with old and new Android versions. Updating deprecated APIs is a time-consuming endeavor. Hence, automating the updates of Android APIs can be beneficial for developers. CocciEvolve is the state-of-the-art approach for this automation. However, it has several limitations, including its inability to resolve out-of-method variables and the low code readability of its updates due to the addition of temporary variables. In an attempt to …

Intelligent Tutoring Systems have become critically important in future learning environments. Knowledge Tracing (KT) is a crucial part of that system. It is about inferring the skill mastery of students and predicting their performance to adjust the curriculum accordingly. Deep Learning based models like Deep Knowledge Tracing (DKT) and Dynamic Key-Value Memory Network (DKVMN) have shown significant predictive performance compared with traditional models like Bayesian Knowledge Tracing (BKT) and Performance Factors Analysis (PFA). However, it is difficult to extract psychologically meaningful explanations from the tens of thousands of parameters in neural networks, that would relate to cognitive theory. There are …

Revisiting Neuron Coverage Metrics And Quality Of Deep Neural Networks, Zhou Yang, Jieke Shi, Muhammad Hilmi Asyrofi, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Deep neural networks (DNN) have been widely applied in modern life, including critical domains like autonomous driving, making it essential to ensure the reliability and robustness of DNN-powered systems. As an analogy to code coverage metrics for testing conventional software, researchers have proposed neuron coverage metrics and coverage-driven methods to generate DNN test cases. However, Yan et al. doubt the usefulness of existing coverage criteria in DNN testing. They show that a coverage-driven method is less effective than a gradient-based method in terms of both uncovering defects and improving model robustness. In this paper, we conduct a replication study of …

Bug localization is the task of identifying parts of thesource code that needs to be changed to resolve a bug report. As this task is difficult, automatic bug localization tools havebeen proposed. The development and evaluation of these toolsrely on the availability of high-quality bug report datasets. In2014, Kochhar et al. identified three biases in datasets used toevaluate bug localization techniques: (1) misclassified bug report,(2) already localized bug report, and (3) incorrect ground truthfile in a bug report. They reported that already localized bugreports statistically significantly and substantially impact buglocalization results, and thus should be removed. However, theirevaluation is still limited, …

While Math Word Problem (MWP) solving has emerged as a popular field of study and made great progress in recent years, most existing methods are benchmarked solely on one or two datasets and implemented with different configurations. In this paper, we introduce the first open-source library for solving MWPs called MWPToolkit, which provides a unified, comprehensive, and extensible framework for the research purpose. Specifically, we deploy 17 deep learning-based MWP solvers and 6 MWP datasets in our toolkit. These MWP solvers are advanced models for MWP solving, covering the categories of Seq2seq, Seq2Tree, Graph2Tree, and Pre-trained Language Models. And these …

Efficient Search Of Live-Coding Screencasts From Online Videos, Chengran Yang, Ferdian Thung, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Programming videos on the Internet are valuable resources for learning programming skills. To find relevant videos, developers typically search online video platforms (e.g., YouTube) with keywords on topics they wish to learn. Developers often look for live-coding screencasts, in which the videos’ authors perform live coding. Yet, not all programming videos are livecoding screencasts. In this work, we develop a tool named PSFinder to identify live-coding screencasts. PSFinder leverages a classifier to identify whether a video frame contains an IDE window. It uses a sampling strategy to pick a number of frames from an input video, runs the classifer on …

APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) are reusable software libraries and are building blocks for modern rapid software development. Previous research shows that programmers frequently share and search for reviews of APIs on the mainstream software question and answer (Q&A) platforms like Stack Overflow, which motivates researchers to design tasks and approaches related to process API reviews automatically. Among these tasks, classifying API reviews into different aspects (e.g., performance or security), which is called the aspect-based API review classification, is of great importance. The current state-of-the-art (SOTA) solution to this task is based on the traditional machine learning algorithm. Inspired by the …

Can Identifier Splitting Improve Open-Vocabulary Language Model Of Code?, Jieke Shi, Zhou Yang, Junda He, Bowen Xu, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Statistical language models on source code have successfully assisted software engineering tasks. However, developers can create or pick arbitrary identifiers when writing source code. Freely chosen identifiers lead to the notorious out-of-vocabulary (OOV) problem that negatively affects model performance. Recently, Karampatsis et al. showed that using the Byte Pair Encoding (BPE) algorithm to address the OOV problem can improve the language models’ predictive performance on source code. However, a drawback of BPE is that it cannot split the identifiers in a way that preserves the meaningful semantics. Prior researchers also show that splitting compound identifiers into sub-words that reflect the …

Sample-Efficient Iterative Lower Bound Optimization Of Deep Reactive Policies For Planning In Continuous Mdps, Siow Meng Low, Akshat Kumar, Scott Sanner
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recent advances in deep learning have enabled optimization of deep reactive policies (DRPs) for continuous MDP planning by encoding a parametric policy as a deep neural network and exploiting automatic differentiation in an end-toend model-based gradient descent framework. This approach has proven effective for optimizing DRPs in nonlinear continuous MDPs, but it requires a large number of sampled trajectories to learn effectively and can suffer from high variance in solution quality. In this work, we revisit the overall model-based DRP objective and instead take a minorizationmaximization perspective to iteratively optimize the DRP w.r.t. a locally tight lower-bounded objective. This novel …

Mask-Guided Deformation Adaptive Network For Human Parsing, Aihua Mao, Yuan Liang, Jianbo Jiao, Yongtuo Liu, Shengfeng He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Due to the challenges of densely compacted body parts, nonrigid clothing items, and severe overlap in crowd scenes, human parsing needs to focus more on multilevel feature representations compared to general scene parsing tasks. Based on this observation, we propose to introduce the auxiliary task of human mask and edge detection to facilitate human parsing. Different from human parsing, which exploits the discriminative features of each category, human mask and edge detection emphasizes the boundaries of semantic parsing regions and the difference between foreground humans and background clutter, which benefits the parsing predictions of crowd scenes and small human parts. …

Shopping malls are densely located in major cities such as Singapore and Hong Kong. Tenants in these shopping malls generate a large number of freight orders to their contracted logistics service providers, who independently plan their own delivery schedules. These uncoordinated deliveries and limited docking capacity jointly cause congestion at the shopping malls. A delivery coordination platform centrally plans the vehicle routes for the logistics service providers and simultaneously schedules the dock time slots at the shopping malls for the delivery orders. Vehicle routing and dock scheduling decisions need to be made jointly against the backdrop of travel time and …

Efficient Certificateless Multi-Copy Integrity Auditing Scheme Supporting Data Dynamics, Lei Zhou, Anmin Fu, Guomin Yang, Huaqun Wang, Yuqing Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
To improve data availability and durability, cloud users would like to store multiple copies of their original files at servers. The multi-copy auditing technique is proposed to provide users with the assurance that multiple copies are actually stored in the cloud. However, most multi-replica solutions rely on Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), which entails massive overhead of certificate computation and management. In this article, we propose an efficient multi-copy dynamic integrity auditing scheme by employing certificateless signatures (named MDSS), which gets rid of expensive certificate management overhead and avoids the key escrow problem in identity-based signatures. Specifically, we improve the classic …

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) algorithms are increasingly being explored to support various decision-making tasks in health (e.g. rehabilitation assessment). However, the development of such AI/ML-based decision support systems is challenging due to the expensive process to collect an annotated dataset. In this paper, we describe the development process of a human-AI collaborative, clinical decision support system that augments an ML model with a rule-based (RB) model from domain experts. We conducted its empirical evaluation in the context of assessing physical stroke rehabilitation with the dataset of three exercises from 15 post-stroke survivors and therapists. Our results bring …

Duplicate record, see https://ink.library.smu.edu.sg/sis_research/7680/. Developing automatic Math Word Problem (MWP) solvers has been an interest of NLP researchers since the 1960s. Over the last few years, there are a growing number of datasets and deep learning-based methods proposed for effectively solving MWPs. However, most existing methods are benchmarked solely on one or two datasets, varying in different configurations, which leads to a lack of unified, standardized, fair, and comprehensive comparison between methods. This paper presents MWPToolkit, the first open-source framework for solving MWPs. In MWPToolkit, we decompose the procedure of existing MWP solvers into multiple core components and decouple …

Recent studies have shown that strong Natural Language Understanding (NLU) models are prone to relying on annotation biases of the datasets as a shortcut, which goes against the underlying mechanisms of the task of interest. To reduce such biases, several recent works introduce debiasing methods to regularize the training process of targeted NLU models. In this paper, we provide a new perspective with causal inference to fnd out the bias. On the one hand, we show that there is an unobserved confounder for the natural language utterances and their respective classes, leading to spurious correlations from training data. To remove …
