Special Section: Reevaluating Markets For Information, Robert John Kauffman, Thomas A. Weber
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
As the use of information as a productive and tradeable asset becomes more pervasive, its—often unintended—side-effects start showing. This prompts us to systematically recognize these effects and, once identified, to think about how to use them to our advantage or else mitigate them as much as may be economically and/or socially desirable. In this Special Section, we have assembled three research papers, which take a look at different interesting instances of this question, namely in the context of regulating peer-to-peer sharing markets, the substitution of knowledge workers (or their skills) by artificial intelligence (AI), and the difficulties in appropriating rents …

Identifying Legal And Ethical Values In Ai, Keng Siau, Fiona Nah, Chunyan Ding, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Artificial intelligence (AI) applications in health care, education, finance, mining, communications, and arts have brought about rapid and dramatic advances in these fields (Hyder et al., 2019). The rapidly expanding potential of AI in the economy and society has raised a set of legal and ethical issues (Wang and Siau, 2019; Siau and Wang, 2020). In-depth research into the ethical and legal aspects of AI to enable policymakers to introduce effective legislation and regulate AI development and applications is needed. This research uses a systematic qualitative research methodology, Value-Focused Thinking (VFT) (Keeney, 1996; Sheng et al., 2007), to identify the …

Threshold Multi-Keyword Search For Cloud-Based Group Data Sharing, Yinbin Miao, Robert H. Deng, Kim-Kwang Raymond Choo, Ximeng Liu, Hongwei Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Searchable Encryption (SE) is a popular cryptographic primitive for building ciphertexts retrieval systems with far-reaching applications. However, existing SE schemes generally do not support threshold access control (i.e., data users must collaboratively issue search and decryption operations over encrypted cloud data) in a group-oriented cloud data sharing setting, which is increasingly receiving much attention in the research community. Thus, in this article, we first propose a Threshold Multi-keyword Search (TMS) scheme for cloud-based group data sharing (referred to as basic TMS scheme) by utilizing Shamir’s secret sharing technique, to achieve threshold multi-keyword search, threshold decryption, and short record ciphertext size. …
Order Constraints In Optimal Transport, Fabian Lim, Laura Wynter, Shiau Hong Lim
Order Constraints In Optimal Transport, Fabian Lim, Laura Wynter, Shiau Hong Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Optimal transport is a framework for comparing measures whereby a cost is incurred for transporting one measure to another. Recent works have aimed to improve optimal transport plans through the introduction of various forms of structure. We introduce novel order constraints into the optimal transport formulation to allow for the incorporation of structure. We define an efficient method for obtaining explainable solutions to the new formulation that scales far better than standard approaches. The theoretical properties of the method are provided. We demonstrate experimentally that order constraints improve explainability using the e-SNLI (Stanford Natural Language Inference) dataset that includes human-annotated …

Reinforcement Learning-Based Interactive Video Search, Zhixin Ma, Jiaxin Wu, Zhijian Hou, Chong-Wah Ngo
Reinforcement Learning-Based Interactive Video Search, Zhixin Ma, Jiaxin Wu, Zhijian Hou, Chong-Wah Ngo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Despite the rapid progress in text-to-video search due to the advancement of cross-modal representation learning, the existing techniques still fall short in helping users to rapidly identify the search targets. Particularly, in the situation that a system suggests a long list of similar candidates, the user needs to painstakingly inspect every search result. The experience is frustrated with repeated watching of similar clips, and more frustratingly, the search targets may be overlooked due to mental tiredness. This paper explores reinforcement learning-based (RL) searching to relieve the user from the burden of brute force inspection. Specifically, the system maintains a graph …

Multi-View Scheduling Of Onboard Live Video Analytics To Minimize Frame Processing Latency, Shengzhong Liu, Tianshi Wang, Hongpeng Guo, Xinzhe Fu, Philip David, Maggie Wigness, Archan Misra, Tarek Abdelzaher
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper presents a real-time multi-view scheduling framework for DNN-based live video analytics at the edge to minimize frame processing latency. The work is motivated by applications where a higher frame rate is important, not to miss actions of interest. Examples include defense, border security, and intruder detection applications where sensors (in this paper, cameras) are deployed to monitor key roads, chokepoints, or passageways to identify events of interest (and intervene in real-time). Supporting a higher frame rate entails lowering frame processing latency. We assume that multiple cameras are deployed with partially overlapping views. Each camera has access to limited …
Gauging The Acceptance Of Contact Tracing Technology: An Empirical Study Of Singapore Residents’ Concerns With Sharing Their Information And Willingness To Trust, Ee-Ing Ong, Wee Ling Loo
Gauging The Acceptance Of Contact Tracing Technology: An Empirical Study Of Singapore Residents’ Concerns With Sharing Their Information And Willingness To Trust, Ee-Ing Ong, Wee Ling Loo
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, governments began implementing various forms of contact tracing technology. Singapore’s implementation of its contact tracing technology, TraceTogether, however, was met with significant concern by its population, with regard to privacy and data security. This concern did not fit with the general perception that Singaporeans have a high level of trust in its government. We explore this disconnect, using responses to our survey (conducted pre-COVID-19) in which we asked participants about their level of concern with the government and business collecting certain categories of personal data. The results show that respondents had less concern with …
A Practical Comparison Of Quantum And Classical Leaderless Consensus, Paul Robert Griffin, Dimple Mevada
A Practical Comparison Of Quantum And Classical Leaderless Consensus, Paul Robert Griffin, Dimple Mevada
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Quantum computing is coming of age and being explored in many business areas for either solving difficult problems or improving business processes. Distributed ledger technology (DLT) is now embedded in many businesses and continues to mature. Consensus, at the heart of DLTs, has practical scaling issues and, as we move into needing bigger datasets, bigger networks and more security, the problem is ever increasing. Consensus agreement is a non-deterministic problem which is a good match to quantum computers due to the probabilistic nature of quantum phenomena. In this paper, we show that quantum nodes entangled in a variety of network …
Multimodal Zero-Shot Hateful Meme Detection, Jiawen Zhu, Roy Ka-Wei Lee, Wen Haw Chong
Multimodal Zero-Shot Hateful Meme Detection, Jiawen Zhu, Roy Ka-Wei Lee, Wen Haw Chong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Facebook has recently launched the hateful meme detection challenge, which garnered much attention in academic and industry research communities. Researchers have proposed multimodal deep learning classification methods to perform hateful meme detection. While the proposed methods have yielded promising results, these classification methods are mostly supervised and heavily rely on labeled data that are not always available in the real-world setting. Therefore, this paper explores and aims to perform hateful meme detection in a zero-shot setting. Working towards this goal, we propose Target-Aware Multimodal Enhancement (TAME), which is a novel deep generative framework that can improve existing hateful meme classification …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Eye blinking is closely related to human physiology and psychology. It is an effective method of communication among people and can be used in human–machine interactions. Existing blink monitoring methods include video-oculography, electro-oculograms and infrared oculography. However, these methods suffer from uncomfortable use, safety risks, limited reliability in strong light or dark environments, and infringed informational security. In this paper, we propose an ultrasound-based portable approach for eye-blinking activity monitoring. Low-power pulse-echo ultrasound featuring biosafety is transmitted and received by microelectromechanical system (MEMS) ultrasonic transducers seamlessly integrated on glasses. The size, weight and power consumption of the transducers are 2.5 …

A nomaly detection aims at identifying data points which are rare or significantly different from the majority of data points. Many techniques are explored to build highly efficient and effective anomaly detection systems, but they are confronted with many difficulties when dealing with complex data, such as failing to capture intricate feature interactions or extract good feature representations. Deep-learning techniques have shown very promising performance in tackling different types of complex data in a broad range of tasks/problems, including anomaly detection. To address this new trend, we organized this Special Issue on Deep Learning for Anomaly Detection to cover the …

The primary contribution of this paper is designing and prototyping a real-time edge computing system, RhythmEdge, that is capable of detecting changes in blood volume from facial videos (Remote Photoplethysmography; rPPG), enabling cardio-vascular health assessment instantly. The benefits of RhythmEdge include non-invasive measurement of cardiovascular activity, real-time system operation, inexpensive sensing components, and computing. RhythmEdge captures a short video of the skin using a camera and extracts rPPG features to estimate the Photoplethysmography (PPG) signal using a multi-task learning framework while offloading the edge computation. In addition, we intelligently apply a transfer learning approach to the multi-task learning framework to …

Flavor-Videos: Enhancing The Flavor Perception Of Food While Eating With Videos, Meetha Nesam James, Nimesha Ranasinghe, Anthony Tang, Lora Oehlberg
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
People are typically involved in different activities while eating, particularly when eating alone, such as watching television or playing games on their phones. Previous research in Human-Food Interaction (HFI) has primarily focused on studying people’s motivation and analyzing of the media content watched while eating. However, their impact on human behavioral and cognitive processes, particularly flavor perception and its attributes, remains underexplored. We present a user study to investigate the influence of six types of videos, including mukbang – a new food video genre, on flavor perceptions (taste sensations, liking, and emotions) while eating plain white rice. Our findings revealed …

The inductive bias of vision transformers is more relaxed that cannot work well with insufficient data. Knowledge distillation is thus introduced to assist the training of transformers. Unlike previous works, where merely heavy convolution-based teachers are provided, in this paper, we delve into the influence of models inductive biases in knowledge distillation (e.g., convolution and involution). Our key observation is that the teacher accuracy is not the dominant reason for the student accuracy, but the teacher inductive bias is more important. We demonstrate that lightweight teachers with different architectural inductive biases can be used to co-advise the student transformer with …

Desire: An Efficient Dynamic Cluster-Based Forest Indexing For Similarity Search In Multi-Metric Spaces, Yifan Zhu, Lu Chen, Yunjun Gao, Baihua Zheng, Pengfei Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Similarity search fnds similar objects for a given query object based on a certain similarity metric. Similarity search in metric spaces has attracted increasing attention, as the metric space can accommodate any type of data and support fexible distance metrics. However, a metric space only models a single data type with a specifc similarity metric. In contrast, a multi-metric space combines multiple metric spaces to simultaneously model a variety of data types and a collection of associated similarity metrics. Thus, a multi-metric space is capable of performing similarity search over any combination of metric spaces. Many studies focus on indexing …

Child welfare agencies across the United States are turning to datadriven predictive technologies (commonly called predictive analytics) which use government administrative data to assist workers’ decision-making. While some prior work has explored impacted stakeholders’ concerns with current uses of data-driven predictive risk models (PRMs), less work has asked stakeholders whether such tools ought to be used in the first place. In this work, we conducted a set of seven design workshops with 35 stakeholders who have been impacted by the child welfare system or who work in it to understand their beliefs and concerns around PRMs, and to engage them …

Catching Both Gray And Black Swans: Open-Set Supervised Anomaly Detection, Choubo Ding, Guansong Pang, Chunhua Shen
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Despite most existing anomaly detection studies assume the availability of normal training samples only, a few labeled anomaly examples are often available in many real-world applications, such as defect samples identified during random quality inspection, lesion images confirmed by radiologists in daily medical screening, etc. These anomaly examples provide valuable knowledge about the application-specific abnormality, enabling significantly improved detection of similar anomalies in some recent models. However, those anomalies seen during training often do not illustrate every possible class of anomaly, rendering these models ineffective in generalizing to unseen anomaly classes. This paper tackles open-set supervised anomaly detection, in which …

Blocklens: Visual Analytics Of Student Coding Behaviors In Block-Based Programming Environments., Sean Tung, Huan Wei, Haotian Li, Yong Wang, Meng Xia, Huamin. Qu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Block-based programming environments have been widely used to introduce K-12 students to coding. To guide students effectively, instructors and platform owners often need to understand behaviors like how students solve certain questions or where they get stuck and why. However, it is challenging for them to effectively analyze students’ coding data. To this end, we propose BlockLens, a novel visual analytics system to assist instructors and platform owners in analyzing students’ block-based coding behaviors, mistakes, and problem-solving patterns. BlockLens enables the grouping of students by question progress and performance, identification of common problem-solving strategies and pitfalls, and presentation of insights …
Reinforcement Learning Approach To Solve Dynamic Bi-Objective Police Patrol Dispatching And Rescheduling Problem, Waldy Joe, Hoong Chuin Lau, Jonathan Pan
Reinforcement Learning Approach To Solve Dynamic Bi-Objective Police Patrol Dispatching And Rescheduling Problem, Waldy Joe, Hoong Chuin Lau, Jonathan Pan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Police patrol aims to fulfill two main objectives namely to project presence and to respond to incidents in a timely manner. Incidents happen dynamically and can disrupt the initially-planned patrol schedules. The key decisions to be made will be which patrol agent to be dispatched to respond to an incident and subsequently how to adapt the patrol schedules in response to such dynamically-occurring incidents whilst still fulfilling both objectives; which sometimes can be conflicting. In this paper, we define this real-world problem as a Dynamic Bi-Objective Police Patrol Dispatching and Rescheduling Problem and propose a solution approach that combines Deep …
Deep One-Class Classification Via Interpolated Gaussian Descriptor, Yuanhong Chen, Yu Tian, Guansong Pang, Gustavo Carneiro
Deep One-Class Classification Via Interpolated Gaussian Descriptor, Yuanhong Chen, Yu Tian, Guansong Pang, Gustavo Carneiro
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
One-class classification (OCC) aims to learn an effective data description to enclose all normal training samples and detect anomalies based on the deviation from the data description. Current state-of-the-art OCC models learn a compact normality description by hyper-sphere minimisation, but they often suffer from overfitting the training data, especially when the training set is small or contaminated with anomalous samples. To address this issue, we introduce the interpolated Gaussian descriptor (IGD) method, a novel OCC model that learns a one-class Gaussian anomaly classifier trained with adversarially interpolated training samples. The Gaussian anomaly classifier differentiates the training samples based on their …

Differential Cost Analysis With Simultaneous Potentials And Anti-Potentials, Dorde Zikelic, Bor-Yuh Evan Chang, Pauline Bolignano, Franco Raimondi
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We present a novel approach to differential cost analysis that, given a program revision, attempts to statically bound the difference in resource usage, or cost, between the two program versions. Differential cost analysis is particularly interesting because of the many compelling applications for it, such as detecting resource-use regressions at code-review time or proving the absence of certain side-channel vulnerabilities. One prior approach to differential cost analysis is to apply relational reasoning that conceptually constructs a product program on which one can over-approximate the difference in costs between the two program versions. However, a significant challenge in any relational approach …

Do-Gan: A Double Oracle Framework For Generative Adversarial Networks, Aye Phyu Phye Aung, Xinrun Wang, Runsheng Yu, Bo An, Senthilnath Jayavelu, Xiaoli Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we propose a new approach to train Gen-erative Adversarial Networks (GANs) where we deploy a double-oracle framework using the generator and discrim-inator oracles. GAN is essentially a two-player zero-sum game between the generator and the discriminator. Training GANs is challenging as a pure Nash equilibrium may not exist and even finding the mixed Nash equilibrium is difficult as GANs have a large-scale strategy space. In DO-GAN, we extend the double oracle framework to GANs. We first generalize the players' strategies as the trained models of generator and discriminator from the best response or-acles. We then compute the …

The Reasonableness Standard Of Compliance In The Singapore Personal Data Protection Act, Warren B. Chik
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
The “reasonableness test” establishes the threshold of compliance and accountability under the Singapore Personal Data Protection Act. This “open-ended” test is flexible enough to take into account and react to changes in the scope and uses of personal data to maintain an equilibrium between the interest of individuals in the protection of their personal information on the one hand and the needs of organisations for access to, and the use of, such data on the other. This article seeks to provide a better understanding of how the test works by comparing it to the objective and function of the fair …

Concern has been widely expressed about the potential for COVID-19 control technologies and resultant data sharing negatively impacting on civil rights, invading personal privacy, undermining citizen dignity through expansive data matching and ultimately providing opportunities for data use well beyond the brief of virus mitigation. This chapter offers suggestions regarding effective and inclusive regulatory responses when faced with extended surveillance, tracking/tracing, public/private provider data sharing and any breakdown in personal data firewalls, or otherwise conventional aggregated data deviations and distortion. In doing so, the chapter explores personal data usage in the context of COVID-19 as a regulatory enterprise. It addresses …

Communicative Strategies For Building Public Confidence In Data Governance: Analyzing Singapore's Covid-19 Contact-Tracing Initiatives, Gordon Kuo Siong Tan, Sun Sun Lim
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Effective social data governance rests on a bedrock of social support. Without securing trust from the populace whose information is being collected, analyzed, and deployed, policies on which such data are based will be undermined by a lack of public confidence. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated digitalization and datafication by governments for the purposes of contact tracing and epidemiological investigation. However, concerns about surveillance and data privacy have stunted the adoption of such contact-tracing initiatives. This commentary analyzes Singapore's contact-tracing initiative to uncover the reasons for public resistance and efforts by the state to address them. The government's contact-tracing program …

Person re-identification (Re-ID) aims at retrieving a person of interest across multiple non-overlapping cameras. With the advancement of deep neural networks and increasing demand of intelligent video surveillance, it has gained significantly increased interest in the computer vision community. By dissecting the involved components in developing a person Re-ID system, we categorize it into the closed-world and open-world settings. We first conduct a comprehensive overview with in-depth analysis for closed-world person Re-ID from three different perspectives, including deep feature representation learning, deep metric learning and ranking optimization. With the performance saturation under closed-world setting, the research focus for person Re-ID …

Decomposing Generation Networks With Structure Prediction For Recipe Generation, Hao Wang, Guosheng Lin, Steven C. H. Hoi, Chunyan Miao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recipe generation from food images and ingredients is a challenging task, which requires the interpretation of the information from another modality. Different from the image captioning task, where the captions usually have one sentence, cooking instructions contain multiple sentences and have obvious structures. To help the model capture the recipe structure and avoid missing some cooking details, we propose a novel framework: Decomposing Generation Networks (DGN) with structure prediction, to get more structured and complete recipe generation outputs. Specifically, we split each cooking instruction into several phases, and assign different sub-generators to each phase. Our approach includes two novel ideas: …

Simultaneous Energy Harvesting And Gait Recognition Using Piezoelectric Energy Harvester, Dong Ma, Guohao Lan, Weitao Xu, Mahbub Hassan, Wen Hu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Piezoelectric energy harvester, which generates electricity from stress or vibrations, is gaining increasing attention as a viable solution to extend battery life in wearables. Recent research further reveals that, besides generating energy, PEH can also serve as a passive sensor to detect human gait power-efficiently because its stress or vibration patterns are significantly influenced by the gait. However, as PEHs are not designed for precise measurement of motion, achievable gait recognition accuracy remains low with conventional classification algorithms. The accuracy deteriorates further when the generated electricity is stored simultaneously. To classify gait reliably while simultaneously storing generated energy, we make …

Cross-Lingual Adaptation For Recipe Retrieval With Mixup, Bin Zhu, Chong-Wah Ngo, Jingjing Chen, Wing-Kwong Chan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Cross-modal recipe retrieval has attracted research attention in recent years, thanks to the availability of large-scale paired data for training. Nevertheless, obtaining adequate recipe-image pairs covering the majority of cuisines for supervised learning is difficult if not impossible. By transferring knowledge learnt from a data-rich cuisine to a data-scarce cuisine, domain adaptation sheds light on this practical problem. Nevertheless, existing works assume recipes in source and target domains are mostly originated from the same cuisine and written in the same language. This paper studies unsupervised domain adaptation for image-to-recipe retrieval, where recipes in source and target domains are in different …
