In 1990, the New York State Education Department presented a syllabus that required the teaching of curriculum-oriented library skills and suggested the use of computers to be integrated with the teaching of these skills whenever possible. Schools in New York State are now trying to implement the suggestions in the syllabus. Many authors of educational articles have written at length concerning the incorporation of computer-assisted instruction (CAl) into the classroom, but clear directions have not been provided in the literature for the design or implementation of the necessary software.

The objective of this meta-analysis was to integrate the results of a collection of primary research studies on learner control of computer-based environments. The scope for the meta-analysis was limited to inquiry on different learner-control models and their effect on student achievement as represented by posttest scores. Three specific research questions were defined:

1. What are the characteristics of the body of learner-control research which has examined the effect on achievement of learner control?

This investigation, which was started in April, 1988, was designed to assess the extent of automation in academic and public libraries and school library media centers in the state of South Carolina as well as the prevailing attitude toward library automation. School media specialists were surveyed at their annual convention, and public and academic librarians were mailed the same surveys to ascertain the percentage of media centers in the process of automating a part or all its processes and to determine their attitude toward library automation. The goal of this research study was to determine the effectiveness of the media center within the school environment. The components of the media center program that should be strengthened were identified. The role of the media center, teachers, and staff in facilitating media center goals and objectives were evaluated.

Permission to survey teachers of the Lemmel Middle School was granted by the assistant Superintendent of Planning and Research. The letter of introduction, the questionnaire, directions for completing the questionnaire, and self-addressed, return envelopes were placed in the teachers' mailboxes.

A prototype microcomputer-based CBI program was developed to provide review, structured self-study, and remediation to students undergoing initial skills training at the Naval Air Technical Training Center (NATTC), Lakehurst, NJ. The program demonstrates the capabilities of the authoring (LSAUT) and delivery (LSSTU) programs that are parts of the Language Skills Computer Aided Instruction (LSCAI) system developed by the Navy Personnel Research and Development Center and the University of Utah. Designed to provide library service for two or more different groups of library users in one library facility, shared-use or joint-use libraries are a unique aspect of library resources sharing. Thirteen examples of shared-use library collections in shared or joint-use library facilities in Florida were examined in this investigation. Special focus was placed on the perceptions of librarians who work in these libraries in order to determine how well the libraries meet the information needs on users and how successful the libraries are in conserving financial resources as a result of combined collections. The researcher proposed to advice in the selection of an Integrated Online Library System (IOLS) for use in the 103 school media centers in the Palm Beach County Schools, Florida. This was accomplished by evaluating the two finalists of those vendors who answered the district's Request for Proposal (RFP). Of the five vendors who responded to the RFP. CLSI and SIRSI were selected as the systems most likely to meet the needs of the media centers of the school district.

At the University of Central Florida Library, the librarians with collection development assignments, and the Head of Collection Development, were frustrated in their attempts to fulfill their responsibilities. Those librarians did not report to the Department Head, but to other departments, and only a small percentage of their time was set aside for collection development. This meant that collection development duties frequently were deferred to other duties. There also was uncertainty about what duties could be expected of these librarians. Some functioned only as liaisons to academic departments, while others did extensive selection of material, wrote collection development policies, and …
