This dissertation presents a new strategy for the automatic design of neural networks. The learning environment addressed is supervised learning from examples. Specifically, Radial Basis Functions (RBF) networks learning real-valued functions of real vectors as in non-linear regression applications are considered. The strategy is based upon the application of strong theoretical relationships between RBF networks and methods from approximation theory, robust statistics, and computational learning theory.

The arrival of inexpensive high fidelity audio capabilities for personal computers has been accompanied by sweeping claims of enhanced educational effectiveness. Research has only served to confuse these claims with both significant and non-significant findings. This may be due partly to the single dimensional model which has been assumed when examining audio. When computer-based audio is examined as a multi-dimensional display analogous in capability and function to the more familiar visual display (computer screen), a different picture emerges. A preliminary causal-comparative study was conducted in an elementary suburban school in Massachusetts to investigate the impact of electronic portfolio assessments in student's intrinsic motivation and computer interest.

The target population were two groups of fourth grade and two groups of fifth grade students for a total of 77 subjects. They were trained and introduced to electronic portfolio assessments, a program which lasted for the entire school year. The students used Hyper Studio, a multimedia software program developed and marketed by Roger Wagner Publishing, Inc.

This study was designed to assess the differences in the learning performance (speed and accuracy) with which field dependent and field independent subjects could complete a set of checkbook management tasks using software employing a user interface making strong use of common checkbook management metaphors versus software employing an interface adhering to a defacto industry standard-based graphical user interface design guideline. It was hypothesized that both field dependent and field independent users would complete tasks more quickly and accurately using both user interface types.

The primary goal of this dissertation was to develop and pilot test interactive, multimedia courseware which would facilitate learning the abstract structures, operations, and concepts associated with graph and network data structures in Computer Science. Learning objectives and prerequisites are presented in an introduction section of the courseware and a variety of learning activities are provided including tutorials, animated demonstrations, interactive laboratory sessions, and self-tests. Courseware development incorporated principles and practices from software engineering, instructional design, and cognitive learning theories. Most college students with reading disabilities have difficulty with word recognition. The purpose of this study was to use an investigator-made cue word list to increase low word recognition skills among college students while creating slides for a university curriculum using a simple presentation tool. The investigator randomly divided fourteen subjects into two groups. One group received the treatment and the other did not. Subjects received fifty minutes to complete a five-slide presentation. The investigator used four different data collection processes for data collection. Beyond this, the investigator presented the results using rank correlation. A distance education system has been designed for Nova Southeastern University (NSU) . The design was based on emerging low cost video technology. The report presented the design and summarizes existing distance education efforts and technologies.

The design supported multimedia electronic classrooms, and enabled students to participate in multimedia classes using standard telephone networks. Results were presented in three areas: management, courseware, and, systems.

In the area of management, the report recommended that the University separately establish, fund, and staff the distance education project. Supporting rationale was included.

Much of the software in the world today was developed from the mid-1960s to the mid- 1970s.This legacy software deteriorates as it is modified to satisfy new organizational requirements. Currently, legacy system maintenance requires more time than new system development. Eventually, legacy systems must be replaced. Identifying their functionality is a critical part of the replacement effort. Recovering functions from source code is difficult because the domain knowledge used to develop the system is not routinely retained. The source code is frequently the only reliable source of functional information.

Idea Analysis was investigated to determine its ability to organize scientific information and explain the results of specialists' deliberations in designing new clinical trials. Ideas have long been recognized as the engine of creativity. By focusing on the capture of ideas from the scientific literature, idea analysis procedures enable the arrangement of the information into forms consistent with those developed by subject specialists. The most obvious example is the concept structure. Ideas containing a common frequently occurring term/phrase can be depicted as a primary node in the concept network. Little was known about the value of computer assisted instruction (CAl) for entry-level physical therapy (PT) education. Factors that affect implementation and use of CAl in entry-level PT education had not been identified.
