Using In-Depth Interviewing To Evaluate Deep Learning In Students Who Use Online Curriculum: A Literature Review, Maria Woodhouse
Using In-Depth Interviewing To Evaluate Deep Learning In Students Who Use Online Curriculum: A Literature Review, Maria Woodhouse
Research outputs pre 2011
There are numerous difficulties associated with evaluating student experience of online curriculum, not least of which is the fact that different research methods elicit different types of information. The usefulness of choosing either quantitative or qualitative methods depends on their power to bear upon the research questions. This concept paper presents the learning experience as a qualitative event and argues that the in-depth interview is an apt tool for discovering to what extent students experience deep-learning in studying online subjects. To this end, this concept paper will consider the literature surrounding the in-depth interview as a research method. It will …

Research outputs pre 2011
Smartphone vendors have been increasingly integrating Bluetooth technology into their devices to increase accessible and convenience for users. As the current inclination of integrating PDA and telephony increase, the likelihood of sensitive information being stored on such a device is also increased. Potential Bluetooth vulnerabilities could provide alternative means to compromise Bluetooth-enable smartphones, leading to severe data breaches. This paper gives an insight on potential security vulnerabilities in Bluetooth-enabled smartphones and how these vulnerabilities may affect smartphone users. This paper is discussed from the viewpoint of Bluetooth weaknesses and implementation flaws, which includes pairing, weak key storage, key disclosure, key …
Identity Synthesis: Creating An Identity From Scratch, Lennon Hopkins
Identity Synthesis: Creating An Identity From Scratch, Lennon Hopkins
Research outputs pre 2011
A substantial quantity of research has previously been conducted into the identification and application of measures related to the detection and prevention of identity theft and identity fraud. In the current security conscious environment, the concept of creating an artificial identity is generally met with both caution and suspicion. Much of the attention placed on the concept of identity fabrication has been focused on the unlawful or the malicious use of created identities. Admittedly, the primary intention of a falsified identity is to usually gain a financial benefit however, instances such as long-term witness protection would provide a legitimate need …

Ad2us: An Automated Approach To Generating Usage Scenarios From Uml Activity Diagrams, Robert Chandler, Chiou Peng Lam, Huaizhong Li
Research outputs pre 2011
Although attention has been given to the use of UML (Unified Modelling Language) activity diagrams in the generation of scenarios, thin-threads and test-cases, the processes described in the literature rely heavily on manual intervention either in the information extraction process or in the process of transforming them to an alternate structure. This paper introduces an approach that capture, store and output usage scenarios derived automatically from UML activity diagrams.

From Smorgasbord To Satisfying Meal: An Holistic Approach To Information Literacy And Lifelong Learning, Barbara Combes
Research outputs pre 2011
Educators have long recognised the potential offered by technology as a tool for learning. However, there have been few attempts to provide teachers in the classroom with a framework that assist them to embed technology into curriculum programs in a pedagogically sound manner. This paper details the development and implementation of a module of online curriculum developed for Year Eleven Food Technology (sixteen years of age) students. The module was developed using a framework (CLEO - Curriculum Learning and Education Online) that embeds learning technologies, utilises industry partnerships, has cross curriculum outcomes, scaffolds information literacy skills development and was the …
Heuristics For Optimising The Calculation Of Hypervolume For Multi-Objective Optimisation Problems, Lyndon While, Lucas Bradstreet, Luigi Barone, Philip Hingston
Heuristics For Optimising The Calculation Of Hypervolume For Multi-Objective Optimisation Problems, Lyndon While, Lucas Bradstreet, Luigi Barone, Philip Hingston
Research outputs pre 2011
The fastest known algorithm for calculating the hypervolume of a set of solutions to a multi-objective optimization problem is the HSO algorithm (hypervolume by slicing objectives). However, the performance of HSO for a given front varies a lot depending on the order in which it processes the objectives in that front. We present and evaluate two alternative heuristics that each attempt to identify a good order for processing the objectives of a given front. We show that both heuristics make a substantial difference to the performance of HSO for randomly-generated and benchmark data in 5-9 objectives, and that they both …
Enumerating Knight's Tours Using An Ant Colony Algorithm, Philip Hingston, Graham Kendall
Enumerating Knight's Tours Using An Ant Colony Algorithm, Philip Hingston, Graham Kendall
Research outputs pre 2011
In this paper, we show how an ant colony optimisation algorithm may be used to enumerate knight's tours for variously sized chessboards. We have used the algorithm to enumerate all tours on 5×5 and 6×6 boards, and, while the number of tours on an 8×8 board is too large for a full enumeration, our experiments suggest that the algorithm is able to uniformly sample tours at a constant, fast rate for as long as is desired.
Ten More Years Of Educational Technologies In Education: How Far Have We Travelled?, Ron Oliver
Ten More Years Of Educational Technologies In Education: How Far Have We Travelled?, Ron Oliver
Research outputs pre 2011
This paper describes the advancements that have occurred in the use of educational technologies over the past ten years (1995-2005) and argues that progress has been slow and reminiscent of the slow progress observed in the previous decade (1985-1995). The paper argues that one of the principal reasons for the less than spectacular results stems from the top-down approaches that always seem to drive technology use in education and schools. It argues the need for applications and activities to be driven by bottom-up forces, by the teachers and students themselves and presents the argument that more applied and grounded research …

Designing Comminution Circuits With A Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm, Simon Huband, Luigi Barone, Philip Hingston, Lyndon While, David Tuppurainen, Richard Bearman
Research outputs pre 2011
Mining is an important industry in Australia, contributing billions of dollars to the economy. The performance of a processing plant has a large impact on the profitability of a mining operation, yet plant design decisions are typically guided more by intuition and experience than by analysis. In this paper, we motivate the use of an evolutionary algorithm to aid in the design of such plants. We formalise plant design in terms suitable for application in a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm and create a simulation to assess the performance of candidate solutions. Results show the effectiveness of this approach with our algorithm …
Information Security: A Misnomer, William Hutchinson
Information Security: A Misnomer, William Hutchinson
Research outputs pre 2011
This paper argues that the definition of 'information' is crucial to the understanding of 'information security'. At present, information security concentrates on the technological aspects of data, computer and network security. This computer-centric approach ignores the fact that the majority of information within an organisation is derived from other sources than computer stored data. The implications for security are that much data can be leaked from an organisation even if the computer and network systems are secured.

Opto-Vlsi Processing For Reconfigurable Optical Devices, Chung-Kiak Poh
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The implementation of Wavelength Division Multiplexing system (WDM) optical fibre transmission systems has the potential to realise this high capacity data rate exceeding 10 Tb/s. The ability to reconfigure optical networks is a desirable attribute for future metro applications where light paths can be set up or taken down dynamically as required in the network. The use of microelectronics in conjunction with photonics enables intelligence to be added to the high-speed capability of photonics, thus realising reconfigurable optical devices which can revolutionise optical telecommunications and many more application areas. In this thesis, we investigate and demonstrate the capability of Opto-VLSI …

A Generalised Feedforward Neural Network Architecture And Its Applications To Classification And Regression, Ganesh Arulampalam
A Generalised Feedforward Neural Network Architecture And Its Applications To Classification And Regression, Ganesh Arulampalam
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Shunting inhibition is a powerful computational mechanism that plays an important role in sensory neural information processing systems. It has been extensively used to model some important visual and cognitive functions. It equips neurons with a gain control mechanism that allows them to operate as adaptive non-linear filters. Shunting Inhibitory Artificial Neural Networks (SIANNs) are biologically inspired networks where the basic synaptic computations are based on shunting inhibition. SIANNs were designed to solve difficult machine learning problems by exploiting the inherent non-linearity mediated by shunting inhibition. The aim was to develop powerful, trainable networks, with non-linear decision surfaces, for classification …
Imagining The Performance Zone: Overcoming Ambiguity In Consumer Based Electronic Performance Support Systems, Jason Simons
Imagining The Performance Zone: Overcoming Ambiguity In Consumer Based Electronic Performance Support Systems, Jason Simons
Theses : Honours
The locus of performance support implementation was once the domain of large corporations where its principles offered an attractive alternative to traditional methods of training within the scope of contemporary business practices. Due to economies of scale the large corporations were able to build effective performance support through the precise identification of the PERFORMANCE ZONE. This zone is created through the defining of the three attributes of performance, 1) the nature of the worker, 2) the nature of the task, and 3) the type and amount of support needed. lncreasingly the principles of performance-centred design have been adopted within diverse …
Optimisation Of John The Ripper In A Clustered Linux Environment, Christian Frichot
Optimisation Of John The Ripper In A Clustered Linux Environment, Christian Frichot
Theses : Honours
To aid system administrators in enforcing strict password policies, the use of password cracking tools such as Cisilia (C.I.S.I.ar, 2003) and John the Ripper (Solar Designer, 2002), have been employed as software utilities to look for "weak" passwords. John the Ripper (JtR) attempts to crack the passwords by using a dictionary, brute-force or "other" mode of attack. The computational intensity of cracking passwords has led to the utilisation of parallel-processing environments to increase the speed of the password-cracking task. Parallel-processing environments can consist of either single systems with multiple processors, or a collection of separate computers working together as a …

Evaluation Of An Esperanto-Based Interlingua Multilingual Survey Form Machine Translation Mechanism Incorporating A Sublanguage Translation Methodolgy, Richard Boddington
Theses : Honours
Translation costs restrict the preparation of medical survey and other questionnaires for migrant communities in Western Australia. This restriction is compounded by a lack of affordable and accurate machine translation mechanisms. This research investigated and evaluated combined strategies intended to provide an efficacious and affordable machine translator by: • using an interlingua or pivot-language that requires less resources for its construction than contemporary systems and has the additional benefit of significant error reduction; and • defining smaller lexical environments to restrict data, thereby reducing the complexity of translation rules and enhancing correct semantic transfer between natural languages. This research focussed …

Contrast Enhancement Of Ultrasound Images Using Shunting Inhibitory Cellular Neural Networks, Murali M. Gogineni
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Evolving from neuro-biological insights, neural network technology gives a computer system an amazing capacity to actually generate decisions dynamically. However, as the amount of data to be processed increases, there is a demand for developing new types of networks such as Cellular Neural Networks (CNN), to ease the computational burden without compromising the outcomes. The objective of this thesis is to research the capability of Shunting Inhibitory Cellular Neural Networks (SICNN) to solve the clarity problems in ultrasound imaging. In this thesis, we begin by reviewing a number of traditional enhancement techniques and measures. Since the entire work of this …
A Deception Based Framework For The Application Of Deceptive Countermeasures In 802.11b Wireless Networks, Suen Yek
Theses : Honours
The advance of 802.11 b wireless networking has been beset by inherent and in-built security problems. Network security tools that are freely available may intercept network transmissions readily and stealthily, making organisations highly vulnerable to attack. Therefore, it is incumbent upon defending organisations to take initiative and implement proactive defences against common network attacks. Deception is an essential element of effective security that has been widely used in networks to understand attack methods and intrusions. However, little thought has been given to the type and the effectiveness of the deception. Deceptions deployed in nature, the military and in cyberspace were …
Developing A Catalogue Of Errors And Evaluating Its Impact On Software Development, Indrit Troshani
Developing A Catalogue Of Errors And Evaluating Its Impact On Software Development, Indrit Troshani
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The development of quality software is of paramount importance, yet this has been and continues to be an elusive goal for software engineers. Delivered software often fails due to errors that are injected during its development. Correcting these errors early in the development or preventing them altogether can, therefore, be considered as one way to improve software quality. In this thesis, the development of a Catalogue of Errors is described. Field studies with senior software engineering students are used to confirm that developers using the Catalogue of Errors commit fewer errors in their development artifacts. The impact of the Catalogue …
A Linux-Based Graphical User Interface For The Creation And Reading Of The Frame Format: Version 2.4, Muhammed Aoun
A Linux-Based Graphical User Interface For The Creation And Reading Of The Frame Format: Version 2.4, Muhammed Aoun
Theses : Honours
To gain further knowledge of how the universe began, a new international co-operated project wishes not only to "see" stars exploding, but also to "hear" the explosion. It is theorised that the ability to "listen" to an explosion is possible by detecting gravitational waves. Gravitational waves are omitted when a star explodes, travelling through the cosmos at an exceptional speed. It is estimated that a gravity wave takes only 40 milliseconds to pass through the earth. Thus the aim of this international collaboration is to detect a gravitational wave. To accurately detect such waves, there needs to be several global …

Honeyd - A Os Fingerprinting Artifice, Craig Valli
Research outputs pre 2011
The research looks at the efficiency of the honeyd honeypot system to reliably deceive intruders. Honeypots are being used as frontline network intelligence and forensic analysis tools. A honeypots ability to reliably deceive intruders is a key factor in gathering reliable and forensically sound data. Honeyd's primary deceptive mechanism is the use of the NMAP fingerprint database to provide bogus OS fingerprints to would be intruders. Tests conducted by the author on honeyd's ability to provide bogus fingerprints sees 78% of 704 signatures invalidated under heavy probing. However, the tests left 152 viable signatures for producing hardened honeypot designs.

A Case Study In The Security Of Network-Enabled Devices, Simeon Xenitellis, Craig Valli
Research outputs pre 2011
It is becoming increasingly common for appliances and other electronic devices to be network-enabled for usability and automation purposes. There have been fears that malicious users can control such devices remotely. Since the installation base of such network-enabled household devices is still relatively small, we examine the types of vulnerabilities that another such applicance has, the network-enabled printer, which is commonly found in the education and business sector. In this paper we analyse the source of the vulnerabilities and present detailed threat scenarios. In addition, we examine four organisations in Australia and Europe. Based on the results of the case …

Algorithmic Composition In Contrasting Music Styles, Tristan Mcauley, Philip Hingston
Research outputs pre 2011
The aim of this research was to automate the composition of convincingly “real” music in specific musical genres. By “real” music we mean music which is not obviously “machine generated”, is recognizable as being of the selected genre, is perceived as aesthetically pleasing, and is usable in a commercial context. To achieve this goal, various computational techniques were used, including genetic algorithms and finite state automata. The process involves an original, top down approach and a bottom up approach based on previous studies. Student musicians have objectively assessed the resulting compositions.
