Exploring Methods Used In Face Swapping, Joshua Eklund
Exploring Methods Used In Face Swapping, Joshua Eklund
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
Face swapping involves replacing the face in one image (the target) with a face in a different image (the source) while maintaining the pose and expression of the target face. Previous methods of face swapping required extensive computer power and man hours. As such, new methods are being developed that are quicker, less resource intensive, and more accessible to the non-expert. This paper provides background information on key methods used for face swapping and outlines three recently developed approaches: one based on generative adversarial networks, one based on linear 3D morphable models, and one based on encoder-decoders.

Fashion is driven by a narrative, i.e. a story or idea that the designer wants to convey to the audience. Fashion-tech now adds another dimension to this narrative through dynamically changing aspects of the garments. Many factors of presentation in a runway show affect how fashion-tech garments communicate a story to the audience. In this pictorial, we review a set of twenty-eight storytelling fashion-tech garments. We identify, catalogue, and categorize the factors designers used to convey stories to the audience from the runway. The design space consists of three levels: (1) the artifact-level, (2) the viewer-level, and (3) the context-level. …
Fast And Accurate 3d Object Reconstruction For Cargo Load Planning, Adam R. Nasi
Fast And Accurate 3d Object Reconstruction For Cargo Load Planning, Adam R. Nasi
Theses and Dissertations
Cargo load planning involves efficiently packing objects into aircraft subject to constraints such as space and weight distribution. Currently, this is performed manually by loadmasters. The United States Air Force is investigating ways to automate this process in order to improve airlift operational readiness while saving money. The first step in such a process would be generating 3D reconstructions of cargo objects to be used by a load planning algorithm. To that end, this thesis presents a novel method for fast, scaled, and accurate 3D reconstruction of cargo objects. This method can scan a 2.5m×3m×2m object in less than 10 …
Garbage In ≠ Garbage Out: Exploring Gan Resilience To Image Training Set Degradations, Nicholas M. Crino
Garbage In ≠ Garbage Out: Exploring Gan Resilience To Image Training Set Degradations, Nicholas M. Crino
Theses and Dissertations
Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have received increasing attention in recent years due to their ability to capture complex, high-dimensional data distributions without the need for extensive labeling. Since their conception in 2014, a wide array of GAN variants have been proposed featuring alternative architectures, optimizers, and loss functions with the goal of improving performance and training stability. While this research has yielded GAN variants robust to training set shrinkage and corruption, our research focuses on quantifying the resilience of a GAN architecture to specific modes of image degradation. We conduct systematic experimentation to determine empirically the effects of 10 fundamental …

Investigating Guardian Awareness Techniques To Promote Safety In Virtual Reality, Sixuan Wu, Jiannan Li, Maurício Sousa, Tovi Grossman
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Virtual Reality (VR) can completely immerse users in a virtual world and provide little awareness of bystanders in the surrounding physical environment. Current technologies use predefined guardian area visualizations to set safety boundaries for VR interactions. However, bystanders cannot perceive these boundaries and may collide with VR users if they accidentally enter guardian areas. In this paper, we investigate four awareness techniques on mobile phones and smartwatches to help bystanders avoid invading guardian areas. These techniques include augmented reality boundary overlays and visual, auditory, and haptic alerts indicating bystanders' distance from guardians. Our findings suggest that the proposed techniques effectively …

Dashboards, which comprise multiple views on a single display, help analyze and communicate multiple perspectives of data simultaneously. However, creating effective and elegant dashboards is challenging since it requires careful and logical arrangement and coordination of multiple visualizations. To solve the problem, we propose a data-driven approach for mining design rules from dashboards and automating dashboard organization. Specifically, we focus on two prominent aspects of the organization: arrangement , which describes the position, size, and layout of each view in the display space; and coordination , which indicates the interaction between pairwise views. We build a new dataset containing 854 …

We propose using wrist and ear-based sensing, via multiple novel and complementary modalities, to unobtrusively infer activity-aware, complex cognitive and affective states (such as confusion, boredom, and recall failure) of individuals. While state-of-the-art wearable devices are predominantly used (a) independently, with limited coordination among multiple devices, and (b) to capture macro-level physical activity and physiological state, we seek to expand the ambit of unobtrusive wearable sensing to capture the cognitive states while performing commonplace physical activities. Such states typically manifest via fine-grained, almost unobservable, microscopic head, face, and eye movements. We identify some of these fine-grained physical markers that serve …

Investigating Noticeable Hand Redirection In Virtual Reality Using Physiological And Interaction Data, Martin Feick, Kora Regitz, Anthony Tang, Jungbluth
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Hand redirection is effective so long as the introduced offsets are not noticeably disruptive to users. In this work we investigate the use of physiological and interaction data to detect movement discrepancies between a user's real and virtual hand, pushing towards a novel approach to identify discrepancies which are too large and therefore can be noticed. We ran a study with 22 participants, collecting EEG, ECG, EDA, RSP, and interaction data. Our results suggest that EEG and interaction data can be reliably used to detect visuo-motor discrepancies, whereas ECG and RSP seem to suffer from inconsistencies. Our findings also show …

Concept-Oriented Transformers For Visual Sentiment Analysis, Quoc Tuan Truong, Hady Wirawan Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In the richly multimedia Web, detecting sentiment signals expressed in images would support multiple applications, e.g., measuring customer satisfaction from online reviews, analyzing trends and opinions from social media. Given an image, visual sentiment analysis aims at recognizing positive or negative sentiment, and occasionally neutral sentiment as well. A nascent yet promising direction is Transformer-based models applied to image data, whereby Vision Transformer (ViT) establishes remarkable performance on largescale vision benchmarks. In addition to investigating the fitness of ViT for visual sentiment analysis, we further incorporate concept orientation into the self-attention mechanism, which is the core component of Transformer. The …

Effective Graph Kernels For Evolving Functional Brain Networks, Xinlei Wang, Jinyi Chen, Bing Tian Dai, Junchang Xin, Yu Gu, Ge Yu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The graph kernel of the functional brain network is an effective method in the field of neuropsychiatric disease diagnosis like Alzheimer's Disease (AD). The traditional static brain networks cannot reflect dynamic changes of brain activities, but evolving brain networks, which are a series of brain networks over time, are able to seize such dynamic changes. As far as we know, the graph kernel method is effective for calculating the differences among networks. Therefore, it has a great potential to understand the dynamic changes of evolving brain networks, which are a series of chronological differences. However, if the conventional graph kernel …

Person re-identification (Re-ID) aims to retrieve person images from a large gallery given a query image of a person of interest. Global information and fine-grained local features are both essential for the representation. However, global embedding learned by naive classification model tends to be trapped in the most discriminative local region, leading to poor evaluation performance. To address the issue, we propose a novel baseline network that learns strong global feature termed as Comprehensive Global Embedding (CGE), ensuring more local regions of global feature maps to be discriminative. In this work, two key modules are proposed including Non-parameterized Local Classifier …

Bidding Graph Games With Partially-Observable Budgets, Guy Avni, Ismael Jecker, Dorde Zikelic
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Two-player zero-sum graph games are a central model, which proceeds as follows. A token is placed on a vertex of a graph, and the two players move it to produce an infinite play, which determines the winner or payoff of the game. Traditionally, the players alternate turns in moving the token. In bidding games, however, the players have budgets and in each turn, an auction (bidding) determines which player moves the token. So far, bidding games have only been studied as fullinformation games. In this work we initiate the study of partial-information bidding games: we study bidding games in which …
Skeleton-Based Hand Gesture Recognition Using Data-Level Fusion, Oluwaleke Yusuf
Skeleton-Based Hand Gesture Recognition Using Data-Level Fusion, Oluwaleke Yusuf
Theses and Dissertations
Hand Gesture Recognition (HGR) is a form of perceptual computing that allows artificial systems to capture and interpret human gestures. HGR has applications in human-machine interaction, virtual reality, augmented reality, and human behavior analysis. The human hand can assume a near-infinite number of poses and orientations to form myriad gestures, thus increasing the difficulty of the HGR task.
The hand skeleton of connected joints effectively describes the hand’s geometric shape and thus contains richer semantic gesture information while eliminating noise from individual differences in physical hand characteristics. The efficacy and computational efficiency of skeleton-based HGR frameworks can be significantly enhanced …
Codebase Relationship Visualizer: Visualizing Relationships Between Source Code Files, Jesse Hines
Codebase Relationship Visualizer: Visualizing Relationships Between Source Code Files, Jesse Hines
MS in Computer Science Project Reports
Understanding relationships between files and their directory structure is a fundamental part of the software development process. However, it can be hard to grasp these relationships without a convenient way to visualize how files are connected and how they fit into the directory structure of the codebase. In this paper we describe CodeBase Relationship Visualizer (CBRV), a Visual Studio Code extension that interactively visualizes the relationships between files. CBRV displays the relationships between files as arrows superimposed over a diagram of the codebase's directory structure. CBRV comes bundled with visualizations of the stack trace path, a dependency graph for Python …

Finding Forensic Evidence In The Operating System's Graphical User Interface, Edward X. Wilson Mr.
LSU Master's Theses
A branch of cyber security known as memory forensics focuses on extracting meaningful evidence from system memory. This analysis is often referred to as volatile memory analysis, and is generally performed on memory captures acquired from target systems. Inside of a memory capture is the complete state of a system under investigation, including the contents of currently running as well as previously executed applications. Analysis of this data can reveal a significant amount of activity that occurred on a system since the last reboot. For this research, the Windows operating system is targeted. In particular, the graphical user interface component …

Visual Analytics And Modeling Of Materials Property Data, Diwas Bhattarai
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Due to significant advancements in experimental and computational techniques, materials data are abundant. To facilitate data-driven research, it calls for a system for managing and sharing data and supporting a set of tools for effective data analysis and modeling. Generally, a given material property M can be considered as a multivariate data problem. The dimensions of M are the values of the property itself, the conditions (pressure P, temperature T, and multi-component composition X) that control the concerned property, and relevant metadata I (source, date).
Here we present a comprehensive database considering both experimental and computational sources …

X-Disetrac: Distributed Eye-Tracking With Extended Realities, Bhanuka Mahanama, Sampath Jayarathna
College of Sciences Posters
Humans use heterogeneous collaboration mediums such as in-person, online, and extended realities for day-to-day activities. Identifying patterns in viewpoints and pupillary responses (a.k.a eye-tracking data) provide informative cues on individual and collective behavior during collaborative tasks. Despite the increasing ubiquity of these different mediums, the aggregation and analysis of eye-tracking data in heterogeneous collaborative environments remain unexplored. Our study proposes X-DisETrac: Extended Distributed Eye Tracking, a versatile framework for eye tracking in heterogeneous environments. Our approach tackles the complexity by establishing a platform-agnostic communication protocol encompassing three data streams to simplify data aggregation and …

Furthermore, by 2050, this demographic is projected to exceed a staggering two billion people. Amidst this shift, there is an urgent need to develop interactive and innovative solutions to address older adults' unique challenges, particularly in outdoor physical activity.
A co-design methodology involving older adults’ participation from the idea generation to the application development process will be adopted to address …
A Visual Tour Of Dynamical Systems On Color Space, Jonathan Maltsman
A Visual Tour Of Dynamical Systems On Color Space, Jonathan Maltsman
HMC Senior Theses
We can think of a pixel as a particle in three dimensional space, where its x, y and z coordinates correspond to its level of red, green, and blue, respectively. Just as a particle’s motion is guided by physical rules like gravity, we can construct rules to guide a pixel’s motion through color space. We can develop striking visuals by applying these rules, called dynamical systems, onto images using animation engines. This project explores a number of these systems while exposing the underlying algebraic structure of color space. We also build and demonstrate a Visual DJ circuit board for …

Modelling The Relationship Between Personality Traits And Basic Emotions: A Multi-Modal And Affective Computing Approach, Brendan Ryan Donovan
Modelling The Relationship Between Personality Traits And Basic Emotions: A Multi-Modal And Affective Computing Approach, Brendan Ryan Donovan
Theses
In the field of Psychology, it has long been assumed that one’s personality traits are linked to one’s emotional states. Yet there is a scarce amount of research that has directly quantified the relationships between basic emotional states and Big Five personality traits. Most empirical research has investigated how attributes of emotional states map to a narrow selection of personality traits (Extraversion and Neuroticism) via a single modality (questionnaires). This narrow focus restricts the field’s understanding of the relationship between emotional states and personality traits.
In this research, the Personality Emotion Mapping (PEM) model was developed to map the relationships …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Deep learning models often fit undesired dataset bias in training. In this paper, we formulate the bias using causal inference, which helps us uncover the ever-elusive causalities among the key factors in training, and thus pursue the desired causal effect without the bias. We start from revisiting the process of building a visual recognition system, and then propose a structural causal model (SCM) for the key variables involved in dataset collection and recognition model: object, common sense, bias, context, and label prediction. Based on the SCM, one can observe that there are “good” and “bad” biases. Intuitively, in the image …

An Interactive System For Generating Music From Moving Images, Hanlin Wang
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Moving images contain a wealth of information pertaining to motion. Motivated by the interconnectedness of music and movement, we present a framework for transforming the kinetic qualities of moving images into music. We developed an interactive software system that takes video as input and maps its motion attributes into the musical dimension based on perceptually grounded principles. The system combines existing sonification frameworks with theories and techniques of generative music. To evaluate the system, we conducted a two-part experiment. First, we asked participants to make judgements on video-audio correspondence from clips generated by the system. Second, we asked participants to …

The COVID-19 pandemic presents significant challenges due to its high transmissibility and mortality risk. Traditional diagnostic methods, such as RT-PCR, have limitations that hinder timely and accurate screening. In response, AI-powered computer-aided imaging analysis techniques have emerged as a promising alternative for COVID-19 diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that combines the strengths of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Vision Transformer (ViT) to enhance the performance of COVID-19 diagnosis models. CNN excels at capturing spatial features in medical images, while ViT leverages self-attention mechanisms inspired by human radiologists. Additionally, our approach draws inspiration from subclinical diagnosis, a …

Hyperproperties extend trace properties to express properties of sets of traces, and they are increasingly popular in specifying various security and performance-related properties in domains such as cyber-physical systems, smart grids, and automotive. This paper introduces HyperTWTL, which extends Time Window Temporal Logic (TWTL)-a domain-specific formal specification language for robotics, by allowing explicit and simultaneous quantification over multiple execution traces. We propose two different semantics for HyperTWTL, synchronous and asynchronous, based on the alignment of the timestamps in the traces. Consequently, we demonstrate the application of HyperTWTL in formalizing important information-flow security policies and concurrency for robotics applications. Furthermore, we …
