Optimization Of Electrical Power Transmission Lines'' Routing Using Ahp, Fuzzy Ahp, And Gis, Hasan Eroğlu, Musa Aydin
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
With the increase of people's need for energy, electrical energy transmission has become a very important issue as well as electrical power generation. One of the most important problems in energy transmission is finding the best route in a very complex study area. To date, many people from different disciplines have come together to find the best routes by manual methods like using paper maps and deciding which route is the least-cost path (LCP) to the destination point. Today it is known that, in engineering problems, and especially in path-finding or site-placing problems, the Geographic Information System (GIS) is the …

Optimal Ipfc Damping Controller Design Based On Simplex Method And Self-Tuned Fuzzy Damping Scheme In A Two-Area Multimachine Power System, Ahmet Mete Vural, Kami̇l Çağatay Bayindir
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper develops a novel self-tuned fuzzy damping control scheme for an interline power flow controller (IPFC) to suppress the interarea mode of oscillations in a multimachine power system. The nonlinear adaptive damping controller is based on coordinated operation of two fuzzy inference systems. The first one produces the required $q$-axis voltage reference of the quasi multipulse series converter in response to generator angle oscillations, while the second one is used to tune the output of the first one online for further reducing the error signal using a given set of fuzzy rules. The simplex method is employed to search …

A New Bitwise Voting Strategy For Safety-Critical Systems With Binary Decisions, Mustafa Seçki̇n Durmuş, Oytun Eri̇ş, Uğur Yildirim, Mehmet Turan Söylemez
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
The main issue in controlling safety-critical systems such as nuclear power reactors or railway interlocking systems is to provide high safety and reliability where the risk ratio is at the highest level because small errors might result in hazardous accidents (e.g., death or injury of many people). The N-version programming technique, where N-different modules run in parallel, can be used to improve the reliability and safety of such systems at the desired safety level. Decisions of N-different modules are then evaluated by another component, usually known as the voter, using different voting strategies. In the current study a bitwise voting …
Synthesis Of Irreversible Incompletely Specified Multi-Output Functions To Reversible Eosops Circuits With Pse Gates, Robert Adrian Fiszer
Synthesis Of Irreversible Incompletely Specified Multi-Output Functions To Reversible Eosops Circuits With Pse Gates, Robert Adrian Fiszer
Dissertations and Theses
As quantum computers edge closer to viability, it becomes necessary to create logic synthesis and minimization algorithms that take into account the particular aspects of quantum computers that differentiate them from classical computers. Since quantum computers can be functionally described as reversible computers with superposition and entanglement, both advances in reversible synthesis and increased utilization of superposition and entanglement in quantum algorithms will increase the power of quantum computing.
One necessary component of any practical quantum computer is the computation of irreversible functions. However, very little work has been done on algorithms that synthesize and minimize irreversible functions into a …

Stochastic Adaptive Event-Triggered Control And Network Scheduling Protocol Co-Design For Distributed Networked Systems, Hao Xu, Avimanyu Sahoo, Sarangapani Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In a distributed 'networked control system' (NCS), multiple physical systems or agents are connected to their corresponding controllers through a shared packet-switched communication network. For such distributed NCS, periodic sampled controller design is unsuitable to handle packet-switched closed-loop control systems, and a novel stochastic optimal adaptive event-sampled controller scheme is proposed in the application layer for each physical system or agent expressed as an uncertain linear dynamic system. Lyapunov stability analysis will be utilized to derive the event trigger condition. In addition, a network scheduling protocol is also required for such NCS. Traditional network scheduling protocols are unsuitable for such …

Data Warehouse (DWH) provides storage for huge amounts of historical data from heterogeneous operational sources in the form of multidimensional views, thus supplying sensitive and useful information which help decision-makers to improve the organization’s business processes. A data warehouse environment must ensure that data collected and stored in one big repository are not vulnerable. A review of security approaches specifically for data warehouse environment and issues concerning each type of security approach have been provided in this paper.

While the use of RNS has provided groundbreaking theory and progress in this field, the applications still lack viable testing platforms to test and verify the theory. This Thesis outlines the processing of developing an instruction set architecture (ISA) and an instruction execution unit (IEU) to help make the first residue based general processor a viable testing platform to address the mentioned problems.
Consider a 32-bit ripple adder. The delay on this device will be 32N where N is the delay for each adder to complete its operation. The delay of this process is due to the need to propagate …
Simulation, And Overload And Stability Analysis Of Continuous Time Sigma Delta Modulator, Kyung Kang
Simulation, And Overload And Stability Analysis Of Continuous Time Sigma Delta Modulator, Kyung Kang
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The ever increasing demand for faster and more powerful digital applications requires high speed, high resolution ADCs. Currently, sigma delta modulators ADCs are extensively used in broadband telecommunication systems because they are an effective solution for high data-rate wireless communication systems that require low power consumption, high speed, high resolution, and large signal bandwidths.
Because mixed-signal integrated circuits such as Continuous Time sigma delta modulators contain both analog and digital circuits, mixed signal circuits are not as simple to model and simulate as all discrete or all analog systems. In this dissertation, the delta transform is used to simulate CT …

Neural Network Dynamic Progamming Constrained Control Of Distributed Parameter Systems Governed By Parabolic Partial Differential Equations With Application To Diffusion-Reaction Processes, Behzad Talaei, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, a novel neural network (NN) adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) control scheme for distributed parameter systems (DPS) governed by parabolic partial differential equations (PDE) is introduced in the presence of control constraints and unknown system dynamics. First, Galerkin method is utilized to develop a relevant reduced order system which captures the dominant dynamics of the DPS. Subsequently, a novel control scheme is proposed over finite horizon by using NN ADP. To relax the requirement of system dynamics, a novel NN identifier is developed. More-over, a second NN is proposed to estimate online the time-varying non-quadratic value function from …
A New Transfer Impedance Based System Equivalent Model For Voltage Stability Analysis, Yang Wang, Caisheng Wang, Feng Lin, Wenyuan Li, Le Yi Wang, Junhui Zhao
A New Transfer Impedance Based System Equivalent Model For Voltage Stability Analysis, Yang Wang, Caisheng Wang, Feng Lin, Wenyuan Li, Le Yi Wang, Junhui Zhao
Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
This paper presents a new transfer impedance based system equivalent model (TISEM) for voltage stability analysis. The TISEM can be used not only to identify the weakest nodes (buses) and system voltage stability, but also to calculate the amount of real and reactive power transferred from the generator nodes to the vulnerable node causing voltage instability. As a result, a full-scale view of voltage stability of the whole system can be presented in front of system operators. This useful information can help operators take proper actions to avoid voltage collapse. The feasibility and effectiveness of the TISEM are further validated …
Cubic Spline Interpolation By Solving A Recurrence Equation Instead Of A Tridiagonal Matrix, Peter Revesz
Cubic Spline Interpolation By Solving A Recurrence Equation Instead Of A Tridiagonal Matrix, Peter Revesz
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
The cubic spline interpolation method is proba- bly the most widely-used polynomial interpolation method for functions of one variable. However, the cubic spline method requires solving a tridiagonal matrix-vector equation with an O(n) computational time complexity where n is the number of data measurements. Even an O(n) time complexity may be too much in some time-ciritical applications, such as continuously estimating and updating the flight paths of moving objects. This paper shows that under certain boundary conditions the tridiagonal matrix solving step of the cubic spline method could be entirely eliminated and instead the coefficients of the unknown cubic polynomials …
Localization Of Near-Field Radio Controlled Unintended Emitting Sources In The Presence Of Multipath Fading, Nurbanu Guzey, Hao Xu, Sarangapani Jagannathan
Localization Of Near-Field Radio Controlled Unintended Emitting Sources In The Presence Of Multipath Fading, Nurbanu Guzey, Hao Xu, Sarangapani Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Localization of near-field unintended emitting radio controlled (RC) devices under a multipath environment is considered in this paper using a uniform linear array (ULA). Since received signals are dependent on both angle of arrival (AoA) and distance from the RC devices to the ULA in the near-field scenario, traditional localization schemes based on received signal strength indicator, time difference in arrival, which only estimate either AoA or distance, are unsuitable. Therefore, a novel smooth 2-D multiple signal classification (MUSIC) near-field localization scheme is developed to locate RC devices under a multipath environment with a possible location error of 0.5 m. …

A Game-Theoretic Analysis Of The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Peter Revesz
A Game-Theoretic Analysis Of The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Peter Revesz
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Although nuclear non-proliferation is an almost universal human desire, in practice, the negotiated treaties appear unable to prevent the steady growth of the number of states that have nuclear weapons. We propose a computational model for understanding the complex issues behind nuclear arms negotiations, the motivations of various states to enter a nuclear weapons program and the ways to diffuse crisis situations.
Estimating The Flight Path Of Moving Objects Based On Acceleration Data, Peter Revesz
Estimating The Flight Path Of Moving Objects Based On Acceleration Data, Peter Revesz
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Inertial navigation is the problem of estimating the flight path of a moving object based on only acceleration measurements. This paper describes and compares two approaches for inertial navigation. Both approaches estimate the flight path of the moving object using cubic spline interpolation, but they find the coefficients of the cubic spline pieces by different methods. The first approach uses a tridiagonal matrix, while the second approach uses recurrence equations. They also require different boundary conditions. While both approaches work in O(n) time where n is the number of given acceleration measurements, the recurrence equation-based method can be easier updated …
A Cross Layer Routing Scheme For Passive Rfid Tag-To-Tag Communication, Haifeng Niu, S. Jagannathan
A Cross Layer Routing Scheme For Passive Rfid Tag-To-Tag Communication, Haifeng Niu, S. Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A routing protocol for Passive RFID tag-to-tag networks is not reported in contrast with routing protocols for battery powered mobile wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. In this paper, we provide a cross-layer approach for passive RFID tag-to-tag communication. In the data link layer, we designed the medium access control (MAC) protocol which is suitable for passive tag-to-tag communication. In the network layer, we developed the optimal link cost multipath routing (OLCMR) protocol by using modulation depth as the link cost. Simulation results verify that proposed routing protocol consumes less energy when it is compared to optimum link state routing …

UAVs have limitless applications to help our daily lives for the autonomous operations. UAVs have a limited power capacity due to weight constraints and are therefore not able to travel long distances. Ground stations for recharging UAVs throughout different points can increase the flight time of the UAVs with the current UAV battery capacity. This study investigates how the wireless charging system for the ground station can be made more robust when there are misalignments. The wireless charging system is monitored by an Arduino, micro controller, to assess the current condition of charging. The Arduino is able to change the …

Theory Of Topological Insulators And Its Applications, Parijat Sengupta
Open Access Dissertations
An important pursuit in semiconductor physics is to discover new materials to sustain the continuous progress and improvements in the current electronic devices. Traditionally, three material types are in use: 1) Metals 2) Semiconductors 3) Insulators. All the three material types are classified according to the energy gap between conduction and valence bands derived from band theory of solids. Recent theoretical predictions and confirmed by experimental observations have provided evidence that there exists materials which behave as insulators in the bulk but possess gapless conducting states on the surface. These new class of materials are called topological insulators (TI). In …

Image Analysis Using Visual Saliency With Applications In Hazmat Sign Detection And Recognition, Bin Zhao
Open Access Dissertations
Visual saliency is the perceptual process that makes attractive objects "stand out" from their surroundings in the low-level human visual system. Visual saliency has been modeled as a preprocessing step of the human visual system for selecting the important visual information from a scene. We investigate bottom-up visual saliency using spectral analysis approaches. We present separate and composite model families that generalize existing frequency domain visual saliency models. We propose several frequency domain visual saliency models to generate saliency maps using new spectrum processing methods and an entropy-based saliency map selection approach. A group of saliency map candidates are then …
Numerical Studies Of The A6 Relativistic Magnetron Using Particle-In-Cell Simulations, Vineetha Jujjavarapu
Numerical Studies Of The A6 Relativistic Magnetron Using Particle-In-Cell Simulations, Vineetha Jujjavarapu
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The magnetron became a major component in radar systems around the time of the World War II. More recent radar techniques require short microwave pulses (with nanosecond pulse-widths for ultra wideband operations) and high peak power in the Giga-Watt range. In order to achieve these specifications for the military, the magnetron needs to have both a fast start and the rapid growth rate of oscillations in order to serve as a microwave source for the short-pulse applications. These two factors depend on the geometry of the cathode. Other requirements include high conversion efficiency and low leakage current (in order to …

Machine Learning Nuclear Detonation Features, Daniel T. Schmitt, Gilbert L. Peterson
Machine Learning Nuclear Detonation Features, Daniel T. Schmitt, Gilbert L. Peterson
Faculty Publications
Nuclear explosion yield estimation equations based on a 3D model of the explosion volume will have a lower uncertainty than radius based estimation. To accurately collect data for a volume model of atmospheric explosions requires building a 3D representation from 2D images. The majority of 3D reconstruction algorithms use the SIFT (scale-invariant feature transform) feature detection algorithm which works best on feature-rich objects with continuous angular collections. These assumptions are different from the archive of nuclear explosions that have only 3 points of view. This paper reduces 300 dimensions derived from an image based on Fourier analysis and five edge …

Timing Mark Detection On Nuclear Detonation Video, Daniel T. Schmitt, Gilbert L. Peterson
Faculty Publications
During the 1950s and 1960s the United States conducted and filmed over 200 atmospheric nuclear tests establishing the foundations of atmospheric nuclear detonation behavior. Each explosion was documented with about 20 videos from three or four points of view. Synthesizing the videos into a 3D video will improve yield estimates and reduce error factors. The videos were captured at a nominal 2500 frames per second, but range from 2300-3100 frames per second during operation. In order to combine them into one 3D video, individual video frames need to be correlated in time with each other. When the videos were captured …

Near Optimal Event-Based Control Of Nonlinear Discrete Time Systems In Affine Form With Measured Input And Output Data, Avimanyu Sahoo, Hao Xu, S. Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, an event-based near optimal control of uncertain nonlinear discrete time systems is presented by using input-output data and approximate dynamic programming (ADP). The nonlinear system dynamics in affine form are transformed into an input-output form. Then, three neural networks (NN) with event sampled input-output vector are used, namely, the identifier NN to relax the knowledge of the system dynamics, a critic NN to approximate the value function which is the solution to the Hamilton-Jacobi Bellman (HJB) equation, and an actor NN to approximate the optimal control policy, in an online manner without utilizing value or policy iterations. …

In this paper, the finite horizon stochastic optimal control of nonlinear two-player zero-sum games, referred to as Nonlinear Networked Control Systems (NNCS) two-player zero-sum game, between control and disturbance input players in the presence of unknown system dynamics and a communication network with delays and packet losses is addressed by using neuro dynamic programming (NDP). The overall objective being to find the optimal control input while maximizing the disturbance attenuation. First, a novel online neural network (NN) identifier is introduced to estimate the unknown control and disturbance coefficient matrices which are needed in the generation of optimal control input. Then, …

In this paper, stochastic optimal strategy for unknown linear discrete-time system quadratic zero-sum games in input-output form with communication imperfections such as network-induced delays and packet losses, otherwise referred to as networked control system (NCS) zero-sum games, relating to the H∞ optimal control problem is solved in a forward-in-time manner. First, the linear discrete-time zero sum state space representation is transformed into a linear NCS in the state space form after incorporating random delays and packet losses and then into the input-output form. Subsequently, the stochastic optimal approach, referred to as adaptive dynamic programming (ADP), is introduced which estimates the …
