Smart Decision-Making Via Edge Intelligence For Smart Cities, Nathaniel Hudson
Smart Decision-Making Via Edge Intelligence For Smart Cities, Nathaniel Hudson
Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science
Smart cities are an ambitious vision for future urban environments. The ultimate aim of smart cities is to use modern technology to optimize city resources and operations while improving overall quality-of-life of its citizens. Realizing this ambitious vision will require embracing advancements in information communication technology, data analysis, and other technologies. Because smart cities naturally produce vast amounts of data, recent artificial intelligence (AI) techniques are of interest due to their ability to transform raw data into insightful knowledge to inform decisions (e.g., using live road traffic data to control traffic lights based on current traffic conditions). However, training and …

This work investigates the efficacy of deep learning (DL) for classifying C100 superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavity faults in the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab. CEBAF is a large, high-power continuous wave recirculating linac that utilizes 418 SRF cavities to accelerate electrons up to 12 GeV. Recent upgrades to CEBAF include installation of 11 new cryomodules (88 cavities) equipped with a low-level RF system that records RF time-series data from each cavity at the onset of an RF failure. Typically, subject matter experts (SME) analyze this data to determine the fault type and identify the cavity of …

Physical layer security has attracted lots of attention with the expansion of wireless devices to the edge networks in recent years. Due to limited authentication mechanisms, MAC spoofing attack, also known as the identity attack, threatens wireless systems. In this paper, we study a new type of MAC spoofing attack, the virtual MAC spoofing attack, in a tight environment with strong spatial similarities, which can create multiple counterfeits entities powered by the virtualization technologies to interrupt regular services. We develop a system to effectively detect such virtual MAC spoofing attacks via the deep learning method as a countermeasure. …

To improve the power consumption of parallel applications at the runtime, modern processors provide frequency scaling and power limiting capabilities. In this work, a runtime strategy is proposed to maximize performance under a given power budget by distributing the available power according to the relative GPU utilization. Time series forecasting methods were used to develop workload prediction models that provide accurate prediction of GPU utilization during application execution. Experiments were performed on a multi-GPU computing platform DGX-1 equipped with eight NVIDIA V100 GPUs used for quantum chemistry calculations in the GAMESS package. For a limited power budget, the proposed strategy …

Different satellite images may consist of variable numbers of channels which have different resolutions, and each satellite has a unique revisit period. For example, the Landsat-8 satellite images have 30 m resolution in their multispectral channels, the Sentinel-2 satellite images have 10 m resolution in the pan-sharp channel, and the National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) aerial images have 1 m resolution. In this study, we propose a simple yet effective arithmetic deep model for multimodal temporal remote sensing image fusion. The proposed model takes both low- and high-resolution remote sensing images at t1 together with low-resolution images at a …

Facial Landmark Feature Fusion In Transfer Learning Of Child Facial Expressions, Megan A. Witherow, Manar D. Samad, Norou Diawara, Khan M. Iftekharuddin
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Automatic classification of child facial expressions is challenging due to the scarcity of image samples with annotations. Transfer learning of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs), pretrained on adult facial expressions, can be effectively finetuned for child facial expression classification using limited facial images of children. Recent work inspired by facial age estimation and age-invariant face recognition proposes a fusion of facial landmark features with deep representation learning to augment facial expression classification performance. We hypothesize that deep transfer learning of child facial expressions may also benefit from fusing facial landmark features. Our proposed model architecture integrates two input branches: a …

Over the last few years several machine learning projects at Jefferson Lab have had a common focus to optimize operation of superconducting RF (SRF) cavities in the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF). In this talk we highlight work to identify and classify types of faults from C100-type cavities and then to extend those capabilities to provide real-time fault prediction. Early prediction may enable mitigation strategies to prevent some types of faults. In our approach we apply a two-step fault prediction pipeline. In the first step, a model distinguishes between faulty and normal signals. In the second step, signals flagged …

Facial recognition systems play a vital role in our everyday lives. We rely on this technology from menial tasks to issues as vital as national security. While strides have been made over the past ten years to improve facial recognition systems, morphed face images are a viable threat to the reliability of these systems. Morphed images are generated by combining the face images of two subjects. The resulting morphed face shares the likeness of the contributing subjects, confusing both humans and face verification algorithms. This vulnerability has grave consequences for facial recognition systems used on international borders or for law …

Deep Learning Detection In The Visible And Radio Spectrums, Greg Clancy Murray
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Deep learning models with convolutional neural networks are being used to solve some of the most difficult problems in computing today. Complicating factors to the use and development of deep learning models include lack of availability of large volumes of data, lack of problem specific samples, and the lack variations in the specific samples available. The costs to collect this data and to compute the models for the task of detection remains a inhibitory condition for all but the most well funded organizations. This thesis seeks to approach deep learning from a cost reduction and hybrid perspective — incorporating techniques …

Developing And Validating A Machine Learning-Based Student Attentiveness Tracking System, Andrew L. Sanders
Developing And Validating A Machine Learning-Based Student Attentiveness Tracking System, Andrew L. Sanders
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Academic instructors and institutions desire the ability to accurately and autonomously measure the attentiveness of students in the classroom. Generally, college departments use unreliable direct communication from students (i.e. emails, phone calls), distracting and Hawthorne effect-inducing observational sit-ins, and end-of-semester surveys to collect feedback regarding their courses. Each of these methods of collecting feedback is useful but does not provide automatic feedback regarding the pace and direction of lectures. Young et al. discuss that attention levels during passive classroom lectures generally drop after about ten to thirty minutes and can be restored to normal levels with regular breaks, novel activities, …

Automatic Cephalometric Landmark Detection On X-Ray Images Using Object Detection, Cheng-Ho King, Yin-Lin Wang, Chia-Ling Tsai
Publications and Research
We propose a new deep convolutional cephalometric landmark detection framework for orthodontic treatment. Our proposed method consists of two major steps: landmark detection using a deep neural network for object detection, and landmark repair to ensure one instance per landmark class. For landmark detection, we modify the loss function of the backbone network YOLOv3 to eliminate the constrains on the bounding box and incorporate attention mechanism to improve the detection accuracy. For landmark repair, a triangle mesh is generated from the average face to eliminate superfluous instances, followed by estimation of missing landmarks from the detected ones using Laplacian Mesh. …
Robustness Of Image-Based Malware Analysis, Katrina Tran
Robustness Of Image-Based Malware Analysis, Katrina Tran
Master's Projects
Being able to identify malware is important in preventing attacks. Image-based malware analysis is the study of images that are created from malware. Analyzing these images can help identify patterns in malware families. In previous work, "gist descriptor" features extracted from images have been used in malware classification problems and have shown promising results. In this research, we determine whether gist descriptors are robust with respect to malware obfuscation techniques, as compared to Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) trained directly on malware images. Using the Python Image Library, we create images from malware executables and from malware that we obfuscate. We …

The first web applications appeared in the early nineteen nineties. These applica- tions were entirely hosted in house by companies that developed them. In the mid 2000s the concept of a digital cloud was introduced by the then CEO of google Eric Schmidt. Now in the current day most companies will at least partially host their applications on proprietary servers hosted at data-centers or commercial clouds like Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Heroku.
This arrangement seems like a straight forward win-win for both parties, the customer gets rid of the hassle of maintaining a live server for their applications and …

Patient care in intensive care environments is complex, time-sensitive, and data-rich, factors that make these settings particularly well-suited to clinical decision support (CDS). A wide range of CDS interventions have been used in intensive care unit environments. The field needs well-designed studies to identify the most effective CDS approaches. Evolving artificial intelligence and machine learning models may reduce information-overload and enable teams to take better advantage of the large volume of patient data available to them. It is vital to effectively integrate new CDS into clinical workflows and to align closely with the cognitive processes of frontline clinicians.

Abstract—A model’s interpretability is essential to many practical applications such as clinical decision support systems. In this paper, a novel interpretable machine learning method is presented, which can model the relationship between input variables and responses in humanly understandable rules. The method is built by applying tropical geometry to fuzzy inference systems, wherein variable encoding functions and salient rules can be discovered by supervised learning. Experiments using synthetic datasets were conducted to demonstrate the performance and capacity of the proposed algorithm in classification and rule discovery. Furthermore, we present a pilot application in identifying heart failure patients that are eligible …

A Framework Of Lightweight Deep Cross-Connected Convolution Kernel Mapping Support Vector Machines, Qi Wang, Zhaoying Liu, Ting Zhang, Shanshan Tu, Yujian Li, Muhammad Waqas
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Deep kernel mapping support vector machines have achieved good results in numerous tasks by mapping features from a low-dimensional space to a high-dimensional space and then using support vector machines for classification. However, the depth kernel mapping support vector machine does not take into account the connection of different dimensional spaces and increases the model parameters. To further improve the recognition capability of deep kernel mapping support vector machines while reducing the number of model parameters, this paper proposes a framework of Lightweight Deep Convolutional Cross-Connected Kernel Mapping Support Vector Machines (LC-CKMSVM). The framework consists of a feature extraction module …

Morphologic Clustering Of Earcanals Using Deep Learning Algorithm To Design Artificial Ears Dedicated To Earplugs Attenuation Measurement, Bastien Poissenot-Arrigoni, Chun Hong Law, Djamal Berbiche, Franck Sgard, Olivier Doutres
Études primaires
Designing earplugs adapted for the widest number of earcanals requires acoustical test fixtures (ATFs) geometrically representative of the population. Most existing ATFs are equipped with unique sized straight cylindrical earcanals, considered representative of average human morphology, and are therefore unable to assess how earplugs can fit different earcanal morphologies. In this study, a methodology to cluster earcanals as a function of their morphologies with the objective of designing artificial ears dedicated to sound attenuation measurement is developed and applied to a sample of Canadian workers’ earcanals. The earcanal morphologic indicators that correlate with the attenuations of six models of commercial …

In recent years, the community of natural language processing (NLP) has seen amazing progress in the development of pre-trained language models (PLMs). The novel paradigm of PLMs does not require labeled data, allowing us to experiment with increased training scale through employing freely available colossal online self-training corpus to push the limits. Language models (LMs), such as GPT, BERT and T5, have achieved high performance on a wide range of NLP tasks. Meanwhile, research on zero-shot and few-shot text classification has received increasing attention. As labelling can be costly and time-consuming, how to perform data augmentation (DA) and enhance the …
Whole File Chunk Based Deduplication Using Reinforcement Learning, Xincheng Yuan
Whole File Chunk Based Deduplication Using Reinforcement Learning, Xincheng Yuan
Master's Projects
Deduplication is the process of removing replicated data content from storage facilities like online databases, cloud datastore, local file systems, etc., which is commonly performed as part of data preprocessing to eliminate redundant data that requires unnecessary storage spaces and computing power. Deduplication is even more specifically essential for file backup systems since duplicated files will presumably consume more storage space, especially with a short backup period like daily [8]. A common technique in this field involves splitting files into chunks whose hashes can be compared using data structures or techniques like clustering. In this project we explore the possibility …
Hidden Markov Models With Momentum, Andrew Miller
Hidden Markov Models With Momentum, Andrew Miller
Master's Projects
Momentum is a popular technique for improving convergence rates during gradient descent. In this research, we experiment with adding momentum to the Baum-Welch expectation-maximization algorithm for training Hidden Markov Models. We compare discrete Hidden Markov Models trained with and without momentum on English text and malware opcode data. The effectiveness of momentum is determined by measuring the changes in model score and classification accuracy due to momentum. Experiments indicate that adding momentum to Baum-Welch can reduce the number of iterations required for initial convergence during HMM training, particularly in cases where the model is slow to converge. However, momentum does …

Determining Power System Fault Location Using Neural Network Approach, Edward O. Ojini
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Fault location remains an extremely pivotal feature of the electric power grid as it ensures efficient operation of the grid and prevents large downtimes during fault occurrences. This will ultimately enhance and increase the reliability of the system. Since the invention of the electric grid, many approaches to fault location have been studied and documented. These approaches are still effective and are implemented in present times, and as the power grid becomes even more broadened with new forms of energy generation, transmission, and distribution technologies, continued study on these methods is necessary. This thesis will focus on adopting the artificial …
