Dynamical Polymer Chain Heterogeneities And Their Impacts On The Glass Transition, William Forrest Drayer Jun 2023

Dynamical Polymer Chain Heterogeneities And Their Impacts On The Glass Transition, William Forrest Drayer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The utilization of polymeric materials has endured since prehistory, at first unknowinglyin the form of natural biopolymers such as wood and leather, culminating and continuing through the development of the plastics industry in the early twentieth century. Polymers, along with other materials including silicate glasses, readily exhibit the glass transition upon quenching: a continuous but rapid change from viscous (liquid) to elastic (solid) behavior. The physics surrounding the glass transition have been studied for over a century; while considerable progress has been made, there remains no universally accepted predictive theory of the glass transition. Modern development of glassy materials consists …

Block Copolymer Directed Self-Assembly: Exploring The Efficacy Of Applications In Semiconductor Fabrication, Jakin Bryce Delony Apr 2022

Block Copolymer Directed Self-Assembly: Exploring The Efficacy Of Applications In Semiconductor Fabrication, Jakin Bryce Delony

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Over the course of the past 80 years, semiconductor devices have become increasingly ubiquitous in everyday life. From constructing mainframes that encompassed entire rooms during the 1940s, to inventing personal computers in the 1980s, to developing progressively faster smartphones and wearable technology in the 2010s, the primary driving force behind the Digital Revolution has been increasing transistor counts, and thus computing power, via incremental improvements in optical lithography. In 1965, Intel co-founder Gordon Moore boldly predicted that the transistor density of semiconductor devices would double approximately every 18-24 months. While this prediction -- now colloquially referred to as Moore's Law -- …

Theoretical Investigation On Optical Properties Of 2d Materials And Mechanical Properties Of Polymer Composites At Molecular Level, Geeta Sachdeva Jan 2022

Theoretical Investigation On Optical Properties Of 2d Materials And Mechanical Properties Of Polymer Composites At Molecular Level, Geeta Sachdeva

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The field of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials provides a new platform for studying diverse physical phenomena that are scientifically interesting and relevant for technological applications. Theoretical predictions from atomically resolved computational simulations of 2D materials play a pivotal role in designing and advancing these developments. The focus of this thesis is 2D materials especially graphene and BN studied using density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. In the first half of the thesis, the electronic structure and optical properties are discussed for graphene, antimonene, and borophene. It is found that the absorbance in (atomically flat) multilayer antimonene (group …

An Atomistic Study Of The Effects On Mechanical Properties And Bonding Interactions Of Carbon Nanofillers In Nylon 6 Nanocomposites, Michael Roth May 2020

An Atomistic Study Of The Effects On Mechanical Properties And Bonding Interactions Of Carbon Nanofillers In Nylon 6 Nanocomposites, Michael Roth

Dissertations

Polymers have potential for a wide range of applications. The effectiveness of polymers can be further enhanced through the addition of nanofillers that improve thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties of the polymer. Carbon based nanofillers such as carbon nanotube (CNT), graphene, and carbon nanofibre (CNF) are of particular interest due to their high properties and high aspect ratios. However, limited understanding of the governing interactions of these nanofillers with polymers limits the effectiveness of the final nanocomposite.

The first facet of this dissertation focuses on determining the dominating interactions between pristine CNT and graphene with nylon 6 monomer and the …

Modeling The Condensed-Phase Behavior Of Π-Conjugated Polymers, Walker Mask Jan 2019

Modeling The Condensed-Phase Behavior Of Π-Conjugated Polymers, Walker Mask

Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry

It is well established that the morphology and physical properties of an organic semiconducting (OSC) material regulate its electronic properties. However, structure-function relationships remain difficult to describe in polymer-based OSC, which are of particular interest due to their robust mechanical properties. If relationships among the molecular and bulk levels of structure can be found, they can aid in the design of improved materials. To explore and detail important structure-function relationships in polymer-based OSC, this work employs molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study various π-conjugated polymers in different environments. Two independent investigations are discussed in this work. One investigation examines how …

Calculating The Energy Barriers Required To Join Metal-Organic Framework Synthesis Intermediates With Non-Equilibrium Molecular Simulation, Marcus A. Tubbs, David Cantu, Roger Rousseau, Vassiliki-Alexandra Glezakou Aug 2016

Calculating The Energy Barriers Required To Join Metal-Organic Framework Synthesis Intermediates With Non-Equilibrium Molecular Simulation, Marcus A. Tubbs, David Cantu, Roger Rousseau, Vassiliki-Alexandra Glezakou

STAR Program Research Presentations

Metal organic frameworks are synthetic porous materials with great capacity for adsorption of carbon dioxide and methane. They chemically appear as a chain-link fence with nodes of metal connected by organic linkers. The pores between the nodes define the characteristics of the material, allowing gas particles of specific size to pass through while blocking larger particulates. While there has been success in synthesizing small amounts of metal organic frameworks, the mechanistic details behind their assembly remain unknown. Understanding the synthesis mechanism is necessary to understand the kinetics involved and be able to produce this useful material on an industrial scale. …

Stress-Induced Infrared Frequency Shifts In Polyethylene, George A. Pfeffer, Donald W. Noid Jan 1990

Stress-Induced Infrared Frequency Shifts In Polyethylene, George A. Pfeffer, Donald W. Noid

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The molecular dynamics technique is used to study the spectral response of a polyethylene chain in a crystal environment under a mechanical deformation. The MUSIC method, which was previously shown to accurately compute dispersion curves from the time-dependent structure factor, is used. A complete characterization of frequency shifts is presented for various lamellar thickness, temperatures, stress (or pressure), and mass defects.

Computer Simulation Of The Melting Process In Linear Macromolecules, Donald W. Noid, George A. Pfeffer, Stephen Z.D. Cheng, Bernhard Wunderlich Jan 1988

Computer Simulation Of The Melting Process In Linear Macromolecules, Donald W. Noid, George A. Pfeffer, Stephen Z.D. Cheng, Bernhard Wunderlich

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Polymer crystal melting kinetics is simulated by using molecular dynamics. A simplified molecular model of polyethylene crystal melting consisting of one extended chain on a polyethylene-like crystal surface is presented. The simulation data indicate that the end-to-end distance (eed) of radius of gyration (rg) has a simple exponential dependence on time. The rate constants for eed and rg are found to be temperature and molecular length dependent. A more detailed analysis of polymer crystal melting will be described.
