Exploring The Effects Of Polymer-Graphene Interactions On Bulk Composite Properties Using Finite Element Analysis, Bryant Grove May 2026

Exploring The Effects Of Polymer-Graphene Interactions On Bulk Composite Properties Using Finite Element Analysis, Bryant Grove

Dissertations

As a filler in high performance materials, graphene significantly enhances the mechanical properties of polymer composites. Experimental characterization of graphene composite enhancements is limited by labor-intensive processes in both synthesizing composites for different purposes and in characterizing the interactions between graphene and polymer composites that lead to these enhancements. Computational approaches such as finite element analysis (FEA) are suitable alternatives that go beyond experimental analysis. This dissertation demonstrates the utility of FEA in analyzing polymer graphene composites with an emphasis on modeling the interaction between graphene fillers and the matrix within the interphase formed between them. The accessible design framework …

Biobased Acrylate Composites With Enhanced Strength For Additive Manufacturing, Nicole Wagner, Joseph Mcwherter Feb 2025

Biobased Acrylate Composites With Enhanced Strength For Additive Manufacturing, Nicole Wagner, Joseph Mcwherter

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

With the expanding use of polymers in additive manufacturing, sustainable resins for use in vat photopolymerization are required to reduce their environmental impact. One promising approach to achieve this is to incorporate biobased fillers that replace the acrylates in photopolymer resins as ‘green’ alternatives. In this study, photopolymer composites consisting of a methacrylate resin with varying calcium carbonate powder content between 0 and 50 wt.% were investigated. A digital light processing technique was used to fabricate tensile test specimens for mechanical testing. Good printability, dimensional accuracy, and good interlayer adhesion were observed for composite resin formulations that incorporated calcium carbonate …

Composites Developed By The Reaction Of Elemental Sulfur With Biologically Derived Fats And Oils, Katelyn Tisdale Dec 2024

Composites Developed By The Reaction Of Elemental Sulfur With Biologically Derived Fats And Oils, Katelyn Tisdale

All Dissertations

Human civilization’s modern infrastructure relies mainly on cement and petrochemical products. However, the production of these building materials have harmful ecological effects such as green gas emissions, therefore intensifying the need to develop alternative, sustainable structural materials from renewably sourced or waste material precursors. The work presented herein investigates various biomass derived resources that serve as the olefin source for reaction with elemental sulfur, another abundant waste source, via inverse vulcanization to form high strength composites competitive with that of traditional building materials.

Chapter one reviews various techniques that have been developed and executed in an effort towards lignin valorization …

Composite And Polymer Formulation Employing Sulfur And Bio-Olefin Feedstocks, Claudia V. Lopez Aug 2023

Composite And Polymer Formulation Employing Sulfur And Bio-Olefin Feedstocks, Claudia V. Lopez

All Dissertations

Environmental sustainability represents a challenge for society since industrial growth has a direct impact on natural resources and waste production. New technologies that effectively incorporate waste into renewable resources are critical to the development of a sustainable and circular economy. The manufacturing of structural materials like Portland cement (OPC) is responsible for >8% of the global anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide, with ~ 1 kg of CO2 released to the atmosphere for every kilogram of OPC produced. For instance, the development of sustainable structural materials is a key factor to reduce the greenhouse emissions and to attenuate the climate …

Direct Ink Write And Thermomechanical Characterization Of Thermoset Composites, Sergio Dante Favela Dec 2022

Direct Ink Write And Thermomechanical Characterization Of Thermoset Composites, Sergio Dante Favela

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This research will be divided into two sections. The first section discusses direct ink writing and thermomechanical characterization for thermoset composites. The thermoset ink is prepared with fillers aiding the printing process by modifying the rheology of the ink and geometry retention by allowing for the part to have an initial UV cure step. Three specimen formulations with different weight percentages were printed by material extrusion in the shape of tensile specimens following ASTM standard D638 to characterize the mechanical properties at room temperature, 100â?? and 200â??. Furthermore, the ink resin was characterized through DSC, TGA, and rheology testing. The …

Modified Yttrium Hydroxide/Mc Nylon Nanocomposites And Scaling Effects In Multilayer Polyethylene Films, Jia Chen Mar 2016

Modified Yttrium Hydroxide/Mc Nylon Nanocomposites And Scaling Effects In Multilayer Polyethylene Films, Jia Chen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, monomer casting (MC) nylon was synthesized. MC nylon could replace nonferrous metals in certain applications, including gears, wheels, and other moving parts. However, compared with metals, MC nylon products have poor strength and stiffness, and crack easily, especially at low temperatures. In addition, the dimensional stability of MC nylon is poor, especially in the large casting nylon products, causing significant internal stresses due to shrinkage. Thus, MC nylon cracks easily when cast and molded. The yttrium hydroxide particles were modified by stearic acid and dispersed in the caprolactam. The polymerization time was short due to fast anionic …

The Effects Of Cure Schedule On Properties Of Glass-Fiber Reinforced Epoxy Matrix Composites, Trevor J. Lee Jun 2011

The Effects Of Cure Schedule On Properties Of Glass-Fiber Reinforced Epoxy Matrix Composites, Trevor J. Lee

Materials Engineering

Two different two-component resin systems were cured, via Differential Scanning Calorimetry, for the times recommended by their respective manufacturers. The resin cure schedules were designed to simulate typical and attainable processing conditions; they were cured at 120°F, 140°F, and 160°F, and in-mold post-cured at 200°F, 230°F, and 260°F. The resulting scans were then compared to a baseline cure for each resin system, consisting of two heating-cooling cycles at a constant rate of temperature change. These baseline cures were then used to determine the percent cure of each sample and the shift in glass transition temperature between the baseline cure and …

Unusually Conductive Carbon-Inherently Conducting Polymer (Icp) Composites: Synthesis And Characterization, Shawn Edward Bourdo Sep 2010

Unusually Conductive Carbon-Inherently Conducting Polymer (Icp) Composites: Synthesis And Characterization, Shawn Edward Bourdo

Theses and Dissertations

Two groups of materials that have recently come to the forefront of research initiatives are carbon allotropes, especially nanotubes, and conducting polymers-more specifically inherently conducting polymers. The terms conducting polymers and inherently conducting polymers sometimes are used interchangeably without fully acknowledging a major difference in these terms. Conducting polymers (CPs) and inherently conducting polymers (ICPs) are both polymeric materials that conduct electricity, but the difference lies in how each of these materials conducts electricity. For CPs of the past, an electrically conductive filler such as metal particles, carbon black, or graphite would be blended into a polymer (insulator) allowing for …
