Synthesis Of Fe, N-Doped Graphene/Carbon Black Composite With High Catalytic Activity For Oxygen Reduction Reaction, Chi Chen, Zhi-You Zhou, Xin-Sheng Zhang, Shi-Gang Sun
Journal of Electrochemistry
Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a bottleneck for improving the efficiency of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells as a cathode reaction due to its sluggish kinetics. The exploitation of low cost and high performance non-precious metal catalysts such as Fe/N/C based materials toward ORR has attracted extensive attentions. In this work, the Fe, N-doped graphene nanosheets/carbon black composite was prepared by hydrothermal polymerization and followed by a twice-heat-treatment procedure using 2-aminoimidazole as an N precursor, FeCl3 as an Fe precursor and KJ600 carbon black as a support. The TEM images revealed that the graphene nanosheets were separated by carbon black …

Adsorption Behavior Of Rhodamine 6g On Silver Surfaces Studied By Electrochemical Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy, Chan-Juan Chen, Cheng Zong, Guo-Kun Liu, Bin Ren
Journal of Electrochemistry
Rhodamine 6G (R6G) is one of the most common probe molecules employed in single molecule surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SM-SERS). The study in adsorption behavior of R6G will help understand the interactions between R6G and surface. In this paper, we used electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to study the potential-dependent adsorption behavior of R6G on silver electrodes. Our results show that when the potential moved negatively, the orientation of R6G on silver surface changed from vertical to inclined adsorption. This result indicates that the abnormal SM-SERS spectra of R6G observed in the former SM-SERS studies from other research groups are due …

Journal of Electrochemistry
The p-sulfophenylazo calix[4]arene was synthesized through the diazotization-coupling reaction between calix[4]arene and p-aminobenzene sulfonic acid. The UV-Vis spectroscopy, Infrared spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) were used to characterize the as-prepared p-sulfophenylazo calix[4]arene. The electrochemical behaviors of p-sulfophenylazo calix[4]arene were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry using CH3COOH-CH3COONa as a buffer solution. The result shows that the p-sulfophenylazo calix[4]arene exhibited a pair of redox peaks in a scan potential region of -0.5 ~ 1 V. The oxidation and reduction peak potentials were 0.302 V and -0.003 V, respectively, and changed with the scanning rates. In addition, …

Effect Of Flame Retardant On Electrochemical Performances Of Lithium Ion Battery With Lini0.4Co0.2Mn0.4O2 As A Positive Electrode Material, Yan-Zhuo Lv, Yong-Xian Ge, Zhen-Bo Wang, Ke Ke
Journal of Electrochemistry
The effect of flame retardant on the electrochemical performances of lithium ion battery by using LiNi0.4Co0.2Mn0.4O2 as a positive material was studied by measuring the first charge-discharge, cycling, circulation, and AC impedance curves. The experimental data indicated that the discharge capacity of the battery decreased, while the charge transfer resistance and the lithium ion diffusion resistance increased with the increases in the concentrations of the flame retardant in the electrolyte solutions. Furthermore, the stability of the battery at small discharge ratios and the cyclic performance were also improved by the addition of flame …

Electrochemical Detection Of Hydrogen Peroxide At Aunps Modified Electrode Using P-Hydroxyphenylboronic Acid As A Precursor, Chun-Yan Wang, Xiao-Qiu Liu, Ying-Xin Qi
Journal of Electrochemistry
We developed a new method for electrochemical detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) based on boronate oxidation of p-hydroxyphenylboronic acid. This method using p-aminophenol which is produced from the reaction of H2O2 and p-aminophenylboronic acid as a well electrochemical probe, combined with a gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) modified electrode for an indirect detection of H2O2. Because of the large surface area and enhanced electrocatalytic behavior by the AuNPs modified electrode, the detection sensitivity was improved. The method could detect H2O2 in the concentration range of 1 ~ 100 …

Efficient Bimolecular Mechanism Of Photochemical Hydrogen Production Using Halogenated Boron-Dipyrromethene (Bodipy) Dyes And A Bis(Dimethylglyoxime) Cobalt(Iii) Complex, Randy Pat Sabatini, Brian M. Lindley, Theresa M. Mccormick, Theodore Lazarides, William Brennessel, David W. Mccamant, Richard Eisenberg
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
A series of Boron-dipyrromethene (Bodipy) dyes were used as photosensitizers for photochemical hydrogen production in conjunction with [CoIII(dmgH)2pyCl] (where dmgH = dimethylglyoximate, py = pyridine) as the catalyst and triethanolamine (TEOA) as the sacrificial electron donor. The Bodipy dyes are fully characterized by electrochemistry, x-‐ray crystallography, quantum chemistry calculations, femtosecond transient absorption and time-‐resolved fluorescence, as well as in long-‐term hydrogen production assays. Consistent with other recent reports, only systems containing halogenated chromophores were active for hydrogen production, as the long-‐lived triplet state is necessary for efficient bimolecular electron transfer. Here, it is shown that the photostability of …

Effect Of Spalled Particles Thermal Degradation On A Hypersonic Flow Field Environment, Raghava S. C. Davuluri, Huaibao Zhang, Alexandre Martin
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Two-way coupling is performed between a spallation code and a hypersonic aerothermodynamics CFD solver to evaluate the effect of spalled particles on the flow field. Time accurate solutions are computed in argon and air flow fields. A single particle simulations and multiple particles simulations are performed and studied. The results show that the carbon vapor released by spalled particles tend to change the composition of the flow field, particularly the upstream region of the shock.
Syntheses And Characterization Of [4]Ferrocenophane, Ahmed Sabah Al-Doori
Syntheses And Characterization Of [4]Ferrocenophane, Ahmed Sabah Al-Doori
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Metallocenophanes are metallocenes in which the cyclopentadienyl ligands are connected by a molecular bridge. Recently, metallocenophanes have received increasing attention because of their structure, chemical reactivity, and potential use as building blocks for new materials. Even though metallocenophanes have been synthesized by different methods, the majority of these methods involved the use of iron with rare examples of other metals. Therefore, a new method was employed that in addition to making ferrocenophane, will allow us to synthesize metallocenophanes with V, Cr, Mn, Co, and Ni as central metals. This thesis reports the synthesis of [4]ferrocenophane via a “flytrap” route. The …
A Bond Length – Bond Valence Relationship For Carbon – Nitrogen Bonds, C. Harris, F. D. Hardcastle
A Bond Length – Bond Valence Relationship For Carbon – Nitrogen Bonds, C. Harris, F. D. Hardcastle
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
In a recent study, Pauling’s relationship between bond length and valence was derived along with a definition for his fitting parameter b that incorporates the orbital exponents for each atom contributing to the bond of interest. The values of b for various bonds, including C-N bonds, were calculated using the orbital exponent data. In this study, Pauling’s correlation between bond length and bond valence, as well as his valence sum rule, were used with the recently-derived definition for b in order to produce a relationship specifically applicable to C-N bonds. The resulting equation was checked against published x-ray diffraction data …

Sign Learning Kink-Based (Silk) Quantum Monte Carlo For Molecular Systems, Xiaoyao Ma, Randall W. Hall, Frank Loffler, Karol Kowalski, Kiran Bhaskaran-Nair, Mark Jarrell, Juana Moreno
Collected Faculty Scholarship
The Sign Learning Kink (SiLK) based Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method is used to calculate the ab initioground state energies for multiple geometries of the H2O, N2, and F2 molecules. The method is based on Feynman’s path integral formulation of quantum mechanics and has two stages. The first stage is called the learning stage and reduces the well-known QMC minus sign problem by optimizing the linear combinations of Slater determinants which are used in the second stage, a conventional QMC simulation. The method is tested using different vector spaces and compared to the results of …
State Resolved Sliced Imaging Of Infrared Multiphoton Dissociation, Ravin Lakshitha Fernando
State Resolved Sliced Imaging Of Infrared Multiphoton Dissociation, Ravin Lakshitha Fernando
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on unimolecular dissociations of molecules under colissionless conditions with IRMPD. IRMPD was used as the dissociation technique in these studies since roaming type dissociations predominates from the ground electronic state. DC slice imaging was used with REMPI as the detection technique to study the products in a state selective manner to understand the nano scale dynamics of unimolecular dissociations. In the investigation of photodissociation dynamics of nitromethane and methyl nitrite with IRMPD, nitromethane show very low translational energy release of the photofragments and resemble the “roaming” pathway in the dissociation of nitromethane. The difference in the intensities …
How Geometric Distortions Scatter Electronic Excitations In Conjugated Macromolecules: Towards Photoinduced Relaxation And Energy Transfer, Tian Shi
Wayne State University Dissertations
The exciton scattering (ES) approach has been developed to study electronic excitations in large branched conjugated molecules. It attributes excited states to standing waves in the quasi-one-dimensional system by assuming a quasi-particle picture of optical excitations. Tight binding models extend capability of the ES approach to investigate the exciton-phonon coupling.
The topological counting method plays a substantial role in constructing tight binding models. It depicts the ES equations as a topological intersection problem. Then, by applying the index theorem, we can get the total number of excited states, which is equal to the number of repeat units plus topological charges …

Self-Assembly Of Gold Supraparticles With Crystallographically Aligned And Strongly Coupled Nanoparticle Building Blocks For Sers And Photothermal Therapy, S. Paterson, S. A. Thompson, J. Gracie, A. W. Wark, R. De La Rica
Publications and Research
A new method is introduced for self-assembling citrate-capped gold nanoparticles into supraparticles with crystallographically aligned building blocks. It consists in confining gld nanoparticles inside a cellulose acetate membrane. The constituent nanoparticles are in close contact in the superstructure, and therefore generate hot spots leading to intense Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) signals. They also generate more plasmonic heat than the nanoparticle building blocks. The supraparticles are internalized by cells and show low cytotoxicity, but can kill cancer cells when irradiated with a laser. This, along with the improved plasmonic properties arising from their assembly, makes the gold supraparticles promising materials for …

Precise control of the growth of thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters is a prerequisite for their applications in catalysis and bioengineering. Here, we bring to bear a new series of thiolateprotected nanoclusters with a unique growth pattern, i.e., Au20(SR)16, Au28(SR)20, Au36(SR)24, Au44(SR)28, and Au52(SR)32. These nanoclusters can be viewed as resulting from the stepwise addition of a common structural motif [Au8(SR)4]. The highly negative values of the nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) in the center of the tetrahedral Au4 …

Tuning The Electronic Properties Of Monolayer And Bilayer Ptse2 Via Strain Engineering, Pengfei Li, Lei Li, Xiao Cheng Zeng
Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications
The recently synthesized monolayer PtSe2 belongs to the class of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) materials (Nano Lett., 2015, 15, 4013). Based on first-principles calculations, we show that the band gaps of monolayer and bilayer PtSe2 can be tuned over a wide range via strain engineering. Both isotropic and uniaxial strains are investigated. For bilayer PtSe2, the vertical out-of-plane strain is also considered. In most cases, the strain can reduce the band gap except for the bilayer PtSe2 under the isotropic strain (Ɛ≤ 4%) for which the band gap can be slightly enlarged. Importantly, the …

The discovery of the silicon carbonate through chemical reaction between porous SiO2 and gaseous CO2 addressed a long-standing question regarding whether the reaction between CO2 and SiO2 is possible. However, the detailed atomic structure of silicon carbonate and associated reaction mechanism are still largely unknown. We explore structure changes of silicon carbonate with pressure and temperature based on systematic ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Our simulations suggest that the reaction proceeds at the surface of the porous SiO2. Increasing number of CO2 molecules can take part in the reaction by increasing either the …

Oligoamide 1, consisting of two H-bonding units linked by a trimethylene linker, was previously found to form a very stable, folded dimer. In this work, replacing the side chains and end groups of 1 led to derivatives that show the surprising impact of end groups on the folding and dimer-chain equilibria of the resultant molecules.

The Dawn Of New Quantum Dots: Synthesis And Characterization Of Ge1-Xsnx Nanocrystals For Tunable Bandgaps., Richard J. Esteves
Theses and Dissertations
Ge1-xSnx alloys are among a small class of benign semiconductors with composition tunable bandgaps in the near-infrared spectrum. As the amount of Sn is increased the band energy decreases and a transition from indirect to direct band structure occurs. Hence, they are prime candidates for fabrication of Si-compatible electronic and photonic devices, field effect transistors, and novel charge storage device applications. Success has been achieved with the growth of Ge1-xSnx thin film alloys with Sn compositions up to 34%. However, the synthesis of nanocrystalline alloys has proven difficult due to larger discrepancies (~14%) in …

Phenanthrene...With A Twist!, Nicholas S. Kim
Honors Theses
The twisted and sterically hindered 4,5-dibromophenanthrene, was synthesized from 2,6-dibromoiodobenzene in a four-step pathway, or from 1,3-dibromobenzene in a three-step pathway. Then, 4,5-dibromophenanthrene was subjected to a Kumada coupling, leading to the synthesis of an even more twisted 4-bromo-5-tert-butylphenanthrene. Computational studies using density functional theory were performed to compare experimental and theoretical characteristics of these compounds, such as dihedral angles, optimized structures, and transition state energy barriers.
The purpose of these experiments is to fill gaps in chemical databases, synthesize more pronounced twists in normally planar phenanthrene molecules, and to ultimately synthesize 4,5-bis-tert-butylphenanthrene, which may have …

Honors Theses
Part I
Photolysis of phenanthrene-based methylenecyclopropane derivatives have previously been shown to generate alkylidenecarbenes, which readily rearrange to form alkynes. In this work, we show that photolysis of an analogous cyclic alkylidenecarbene precursor at ambi- ent temperature forms cyclohexyne via the putative cyclopentylidenecarbene, and can be trapped by dienes via a Diels-Alder reaction. Cyclohexyne and other strained cycloalkynes are of much interest to theoreticians and experimentalists alike. Results of coupled-cluster and DFT calculations on the potential energy surface of cyclopentylidenecarbene and the corresponding strained cyclohexyne are also presented. The photochemical generation of cy- clopentylidenecarbene, and thus cyclohexyne, from a hydrocarbon …

Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) is an important chemical species in the troposphere as it aids the long-range transport of NOx and subsequent formation of O3 in relatively clean remote regions. Over the past few decades observations from aircraft campaigns and surface sites have been used to better understand the regional distribution of PAN. However, recent measurements made by satellites allow for a global assessment of PAN in the upper troposphere-lower stratosphere (UTLS). In this study, we investigate global PAN distributions from two independent retrieval methodologies, based on measurements from the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) instrument, on …

Synthesis And Properties Of Bisimidazolium And Poly(Ethylene Glycol)-Containing Michael Addition Polyester Networks, Joshua Allan Dippie
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) have been examined in recent years for applications in various technologies, including solid-state lithium ion batteries and gas separation membranes. In this work, a series of bisimidazolium-containing, Michael addition donors were synthesized and used to produce a series of covalently crosslinked PIL polyester networks containing bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide as the counteranion. Within the series, the length of alkyl spacer between the two imidazolium cations and the diacrylate to acetoacetate monomer ratio were varied in an attempt to correlate structural variations with the thermal, mechanical, and conductive properties of the PILs. Single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) due to their unique optical behavior, large surface area, robust mechanical strength and electrical properties make them one of the ideal candidates for sensing and opto-electronic applications. In this work, we explore the energy transfer (exciton energy transfer-EET) phenomena occurring between nanotubes in bundles, using resonance Raman spectroscopy.
