Structural Integrity And Stability Of Dna In Ionic Liquid And Near-Infrared Indolizine Squaraine Dye, Ember Yeji Suh May 2023

Structural Integrity And Stability Of Dna In Ionic Liquid And Near-Infrared Indolizine Squaraine Dye, Ember Yeji Suh

Honors Theses

Luminol, the most common presumptive test for blood at a crime scene, has multiple issues, such as false positive results with chemical agents, no luminescence due to “active oxygen” cleaning agents on bloodstains, and inability to penetrate textile materials. A combination of indolizine squaraine dye and ionic liquid (IL), or Dye Enhanced Textile Emission for Crime Tracking (DETECT), have shown potential to address these issues. The purpose of this study was to assess the binding mechanism of CG (1:1) and SO3SQ dye to HSA and how the mechanism can explain the W214 fluorescence quenching effect and to determine …

A Synthetic Approach To The Optimization Of Silicon-Rosindolizine Swir Fluorophores, Timothy Lewis May 2023

A Synthetic Approach To The Optimization Of Silicon-Rosindolizine Swir Fluorophores, Timothy Lewis

Honors Theses

Fluorophores emitting within the near-infrared (700 – 1000 nm) or shortwave-infrared (1000 – 1700 nm) regions of the electromagnetic spectrum are of particular interest for their potential to supplement or even outright replace commonly used biological imaging techniques, such as magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography scanning. Various characteristics make these molecules particularly appealing to researchers, such as their ease of synthetic tunability, generally low toxicity, and high solubility in biological media in comparison to other NIR- and SWIR-emissive fluorophores. Different molecular skeletons have been examined for use as the core of these imaging agents, such as squaraine, cyanine, and …

Mechanisim Of Plasmon-Driven Photochemical Reactions, Hamed Kookhaee May 2023

Mechanisim Of Plasmon-Driven Photochemical Reactions, Hamed Kookhaee

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Understanding a photocatalytic reaction condition that selectively leads to a desired product on metal surfaces is a longstanding research problem in heterogeneous catalysis. Here, using plasmon enhanced N-demethylation of methylene blue (MB) as model reaction, we show that high degree of product selectivity can be achieved by switching the mechanism from charge transfer to adsorbate electronic excitation and vice versa using surface ligands. In the presence of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) surface ligand on gold nanoparticles, MB is selectively transformed to thionine at 633 nm excitation wavelength that overlaps with the electronic transition of the adsorbate. At resonant excitation …

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Square-planar compounds of the (dichalcogenolene)Pt(diimine) series are possess unique photophysical properties that include long-lived excited state lifetimes, which result in their being potential candidates for numerous applications. These applications include solar energy conversion, photocatalysis, nonlinear optics, and photoluminescent probes of biological systems. The most interesting feature of the (dichalcogenolene)Pt(diimine) series of molecules is the bpydichalcogenolene ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LL’CT) band. To better understand their photoluminescent decay mechanism, and understand their excited dark state properties, we have synthesized and characterized new compounds that include (Thp-bpy)Pt(CAT), (Thp2-bpy)Pt(CAT), (Thp-bpy)Pt(bdt), and (Thp2-bpy)Pt(bdt). Through interpretation of electronic absorption, resonance Raman, XAS, photoluminesce spectroscopy, in addition …

Halide Exchange And Transport In Halide Perovskite Lattices, Temban Acha Billy

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In recent years, metal-halide perovskites (MHPs) have risen quickly to prominence as promising materials across a variety of fields, from photovoltaics to optoelectronics in general. We show here a facile solution growth for creating a variety of mixed halide MAPbBr3-xIx crystals, which we will use to study halide exchange and transport in halide perovskites. We generated a calibration curve between the optical response and chemical composition in mixed Br/I MHPs at room temperature. All mixed Br/I MHP crystals were subjected to measurements of photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectroscopy. A subset of mixed-halide MHP crystals exhibited multiple emission …

Isolating The Electronic Effects Of Systematic Twist In Highly Substituted Aromatic Hydrocarbons Using Density Functional Theory, Grace Tully, Emily A. Jarvis May 2023

Isolating The Electronic Effects Of Systematic Twist In Highly Substituted Aromatic Hydrocarbons Using Density Functional Theory, Grace Tully, Emily A. Jarvis

Honors Thesis

Density functional theory (DFT) was employed to investigate dodecaphenyltetracene as well as similar molecules containing differing backbone lengths and electron withdrawing groups with interest in manipulating the twist to lower the LUMO level for increased electron mobility. Optimization and frequency time-independent calculations followed by time-dependent (TD-DFT) energy calculations were performed at the B3LYP/G-311G level of theory to analyze electronic trends as a result of increased backbone length and consequently distorted end-to-end molecular twist. These calculations demonstrate a linear relationship with negative slope between the estimated HOMO-LUMO, fundamental, and optical gaps as a function of the number of fused rings along …

Excitation Power Dependence Of Blinking In Copper-Indium-Sulfide Quantum Dots, Nicholas Chambers May 2023

Excitation Power Dependence Of Blinking In Copper-Indium-Sulfide Quantum Dots, Nicholas Chambers

Physics Undergraduate Honors Theses

Under continuous excitation, quantum dots exhibit random transitions between fluorescent ON states and non-fluorescent OFF states --- a phenomenon known as blinking. A physical description of the mechanism responsible for blinking that applies broadly to many types of quantum dots remains under debate. We study the blinking behavior of the non-toxic CuInS2 quantum dot, a system that has seen little investigation at the single-particle level. In particular, the optical properties of CuInS2 quantum are often improved by adding ZnS to the nanoparticles, but this addition leads to complex structural-optical property relationships that are even less understood. To probe the relationship …

Mechanisms Of Formation Of Novel Guanine-Guanine Cross-Links As Major End Products During One-Electron Oxidation Of Guanine Derivatives, Evan Dunn May 2023

Mechanisms Of Formation Of Novel Guanine-Guanine Cross-Links As Major End Products During One-Electron Oxidation Of Guanine Derivatives, Evan Dunn

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Guanine (G), as the most oxidizable base in DNA, is the major focus of studies of oxidation damage to DNA. The present thesis reports the first detailed characterization of G dimerization products potentially resulting from recombination of neutral G• radicals. Previous research has discovered a novel type of products of G• dimerization, D1 and D2, formed from one-electron oxidation of G derivatives. However, the mechanism of this dimerization remains elusive. While there appears to be a tautomeric equilibrium between two forms of G•, G(N1-H)• or G(N2-H)•, it remains unclear which intermediate participates in the formation of …

Detection Of Nitrogen Dioxide Via Graphene-Enhanced Raman Scattering, Spencer Hazeslip May 2023

Detection Of Nitrogen Dioxide Via Graphene-Enhanced Raman Scattering, Spencer Hazeslip

Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper presents the development of a nitrogen dioxide (NO2) sensor that utilizes the phenomenon of graphene-enhanced Raman scattering (GERS). The sensor consists of monolayer graphene on a silicon wafer, functionalized noncovalently with Copper(II) 2,9,16,23-tetra-tert-butyl-29H,31H-phthalocyanine (CuTTPc) via the solution soaking method. A custom sensing chamber was constructed to enable Raman spectra to be collected during NO2 exposure. The response of the sensor was found to be linear between 10 and 100 ppm NO2, indicating that it could be used for both detection and quantification. Furthermore, the sensor was shown to be reusable after …

Carbon Dioxide Reduction On Large Area Liquid Metal Gallium-Indium Electrocatalysts, Thomas Hollis May 2023

Carbon Dioxide Reduction On Large Area Liquid Metal Gallium-Indium Electrocatalysts, Thomas Hollis

Chemistry & Biochemistry Undergraduate Honors Theses

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is widely known as a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming due to the burning of fossil fuels. The carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) is widely studied to reutilize CO2 to useful products, including methane, ethane, and carbon monoxide. This project studies the use of liquid metal gallium-indium as an electrocatalyst to perform CO2 reduction to carbon monoxide (CO) or possibly solid carbon in various solutions. Gallium-indium is characterized and studied through its “wetting” properties and adhesion to substrate foil through the measurement of contact angles inside solution. These liquid …

Designing Noncentrosymmetric Multifunctional Materials, Ebube Oyeka May 2023

Designing Noncentrosymmetric Multifunctional Materials, Ebube Oyeka

All Dissertations

Noncentrosymmetric (NCS) materials with crystal lattices lacking spatial inversion symmetry display a wide range of exciting functionalities. This dissertation covers two classes of functional NCS materials: magnetic skyrmion-host compounds and multifunctional materials. Magnetic skyrmion and multifunctional materials combining optical and magnetic responses are providing avenues for developing and optimizing the performance of electronic devices that can have uses in memory storage, laser technology, medicine, sensors, etc. The formation of skyrmions is driven by asymmetric Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (DM) interaction facilitated by broken spatial inversion symmetry and large spin-orbit coupling (SOC), while multiple functionalities arise when spin carriers and optical chromophores are optimally …

Stoichiometric Determination Of Hydride Materials At Extreme Conditions, Gregory Alexander Smith May 2023

Stoichiometric Determination Of Hydride Materials At Extreme Conditions, Gregory Alexander Smith

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Hydrogen was predicted to be a high-temperature superconductor at near-megabar conditions in 1968,[1] but only recently was been experimentally observed.[2] This is due to the extraneous metrological constraint of requiring 5 megabars of pressure to stabilize. A more practical approach for synthesis of high-temperature superconductors has been pro-posed through the use of hydride compounds. Recently, a surge of rare earth hydrides have achieved critical superconducting transition temperatures (T_C ) close to room temperature.[3, 4, 5, 6] However, due to limitations of the necessary instrumentation to achieve megabar pressures, many techniques traditionally used to measure stoichiometry are unavailable.Three works presented in …

Spectroscopic Studies On Silicon And Chalcopyrite Materials For Solar Energy Applications, Amandee Hua May 2023

Spectroscopic Studies On Silicon And Chalcopyrite Materials For Solar Energy Applications, Amandee Hua

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In this dissertation, silicon-based materials for photovoltaics and chalcopyrite-based materials for photoelectrochemical water splitting are investigated using various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Although silicon dominates the photovoltaic market, further improvement can be made by using an alternative low temperature passivation approach. Currently, thermally grown SiO2 passivation is commonly used for silicon solar cells. However, this technique requires high processing temperatures (>800 °C), which increases the thermal budget, potentially decreases the bulk quality of Si, and can lead to difficulties in implementing in production lines. Here, a S-based passivation approach is studied that require lower processing temperatures of ~550 °C. …

Cobalt/Carbon Composites As Sulfur Hosts For High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Yun-Rui Yang, Huan-Huan Dong, Zhi-Qiang Hao, Xiang-Xi He, Zhuo Yang, Lin Li, Shu-Lei Chou

Journal of Electrochemistry

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is one of the promising energy storage devices because of its high energy density. However, the sulfur cathode suffers from sluggish electrochemical reaction kinetics, slow charge transfer, large volume expansion and severe shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides inevitably resulting in low reversible capacity, poor rate performance and short cycle life, limiting its practical applications. Herein, the recent progress of cobalt/carbon composites, including cobalt nanoparticles and cobalt single atoms, as the sulfur host materials in Li-S batteries is overviewed. In general, cobalt plays the role of electrocatalyst, which inhibits the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides, accelerates the electrochemical …

Recent Advances Of Functional Electrolyte Additives For Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Xiu-Qing Zhang, Shuai Tang, Yong-Zhu Fu

Journal of Electrochemistry

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have become one of the most promising next-generation battery systems due to their high energy density and low cost. However, the application of Li-S batteries still faces critical challenges, such as the low conductivities of S and Li2S, shuttle effect of polysulfides and dendrite growth of Li, etc. The optimization of the electrolyte can ameliorate the electrolyte|electrode interphase, conveniently regulating the parasitic reaction and improving the performance of the resultant batteries. The functional additives in electrolytes provide chances to tune the interphase and even the redox mechanism to improve the performance of the batteries. In …

Metals And Alloys As Catalytic Hosts Of Sulfur Cathode For Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Zhen-Yu Wang, Xue-Ping Gao Apr 2023

Metals And Alloys As Catalytic Hosts Of Sulfur Cathode For Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Zhen-Yu Wang, Xue-Ping Gao

Journal of Electrochemistry

Lithium-sulfur batteries are recognized as one of the most promising next-generation energy storage devices, owing to the high theoretical energy density of 2600 Wh·kg–1. However, their application has been seriously hindered by the sluggish electrochemical reaction kinetics of elemental sulfur and discharged products (Li2S2/Li2S), and the notorious “shuttle effect” of soluble intermediate lithium polysulfide species, leading to poor cycle stability, low sulfur utilization and inferior coulombic efficiency. Introducing catalytic hosts into sulfur cathode is an efficient path to propel the conversion of sulfur-contained species, thus preventing the dissolution and loss of active-sulfur …

Ultraviolet-Initiated In-Situ Cross-Linking Of Multifunctional Binder Backbones Enables Robust Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Sha Li, Xiao Zhan, Gu-Lian Wang, Hui-Qun Wang, Wei-Ming Xiong, Li Zhang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries show attractive prospects owing to their high theoretical energy density, but their commercialization still faces such challenges as lithium polysulfides shuttling, severe volume change and considerable polarization. These stubborn issues place higher demands on each component in the battery, such as the development of multifunctional binders with superior mechanical properties. Herein, ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate was firstly introduced into sulfur cathodes, and in-situ cross-linked by ultraviolet (UV) curing combined with traditional polyvinylidene difluoride binder (i.e., forming a binary binder, denoted as c-ETPTA/PVDF) to construct high-loading and durable Li-S batteries. The covalently cross-linked ETPTA framework not only significantly enhances …

Fullerenes are carbon molecules arranged in a closed hollow shell to form spherical-like structures. These clusters exist in various sizes, Cn, with the smallest being C20. C20, often when doped with other elements, has shown promise in creating new materials as a catalyst and as energy storage material. Here, we look at the existence of C20 doped with nitrogen or boron atoms using density functional theory (DFT). C20 is doped with one to three boron or nitrogen atoms, respectively, including the five different C18N2 / C18B2 …

Ab Initio Calculations Of Vibrational Spectra Of Model Peptides, Katheryn Foust, Martina Kaledin Apr 2023

Ab Initio Calculations Of Vibrational Spectra Of Model Peptides, Katheryn Foust, Martina Kaledin

Symposium of Student Scholars

The function of biological molecules is closely related to their spatial structure and conformational dynamics. Therefore, understanding the structure and functions of small peptides contributes to gaining insight into the behavior of more complex systems. The peptide bond (-CO-NH-) is among the very important binding patterns in biochemistry. It links amino acids together, specifies rigidity to the protein backbone, and includes the two essential docking sites for hydrogen-bond-mediated protein folding and protein aggregation, namely, the C=O acceptor and the N-H donor parts. Therefore, the C=O (amide-I) and N-H (amide-A) vibrations provide sensitive and widely used probes into the structure of …

Additivity Of Diene Substituent Gibbs Free Energy Contributions For Diels–Alder Reactions Between Me2c=Cme2 And Substituted Cyclopentadienes, Thomas M. Gilbert, Austin S. Flemming, Brendan C. Dutmer

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Systematic computational studies of pericyclic Diels–Alder reactions between (H3C)2C═C(CH3)2, 1, and all permutations of substituted cyclopentadienes c-C5R1R2R3R4R5aR5b (R = H, CH3, CF3, F) allowed isolation of substitutional effects on Gibbs free energy barrier heights and reaction Gibbs free energies. “Average Substitution Gibbs Free Energy Correction” ΔGASC#‡/ΔGASC# values for each substituent in each position appeared to be additive. Substituent effects on barriers showed interesting contrasts. Methyl substitution at positions 5a and 5b increased barriers significantly, while substitution at all other positions had essentially no impact. In contrast, fluoro substitution at positions 5a and 5b lowered barriers more than substitution at other …

Modeling Excited State Processes In Molecular Aggregates By Constructing An Adaptive Basis For The Hierarchy Of Pure States, Leonel Varvelo Apr 2023

Modeling Excited State Processes In Molecular Aggregates By Constructing An Adaptive Basis For The Hierarchy Of Pure States, Leonel Varvelo

Chemistry Theses and Dissertations

Simulating excitation energy transfer (EET) in molecular materials is of crucial importance for the development of and understanding of materials such as organic photovoltaics and photosynthetic systems and further development of novel materials. The Hierarchy of Pure States (HOPS) is an exact framework for the time evolution of an open quantum system in which a hierarchy of stochastic wave functions are propagated in time. The adaptive HOPS (adHOPS) method achieves size-invariant scaling with the number of simulated molecules for sufficiently large aggregates by using an adaptive basis that moves with the excitation through the material. To demonstrate the power of …

Diffractive Imaging Of Laser Induced Molecular Reactions With Kiloelectron–Volt Ultrafast Electron Diffraction, Yanwei Xiong

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Capturing the structural changes during a molecular reaction with ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) requires a high spatiotemporal resolution and sufficiently high signal-to-noise to record the signals with high fidelity. In this dissertation, I have focused on the development of a tabletop gas phase keV-UED setup with a femtosecond temporal resolution. A DC electron gun was employed to generate electron pulses with a high repetition rate of 5 kHz. The space charge effect in the electron pulse was ameliorated by compressing the 90 keV electron pulse longitudinally with a time varying electric field in an RF cavity. The velocity mismatch between …

Bimetallic Compound Catalysts With Multiple Active Centers For Accelerated Polysulfide Conversion In Li-S Batteries, Wu-Xing Hua, Jing-Yi Xia, Zhong-Hao Hu, Huan Li, Wei Lv, Quan-Hong Yang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Practical applications of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are hindered mainly by the low sulfur utilization and severe capacity fading derived from the polysulfide shuttling. Catalysis is an effective remedy to those problems by promoting the conversion of polysulfides to reduce their accumulation in the electrolyte, which needs the catalyst to have efficient adsorption ability to soluble polysulfides and high activity for their conversion. In this work, we have proposed a bimetallic compound of NiCo2S4 anchored onto sulfur-doped graphene (NCS@SG) to fabricate a catalytic interlayer for Li-S batteries. Compared to CoS, the NiCo2S4 demonstrated much higher …

Recent Research Progresses Of Solid-State Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Yu Luo, Ru-Qin Ma, Zheng-Liang Gong, Yong Yang

Journal of Electrochemistry

All solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs) are considered to be one of the most promising next-generation energy storage systems, due to the promises of high energy density and safety. Although the use of solid-state electrolytes could effectively suppress the "shuttle effect" and self-discharge of the conventional liquid lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery, the commercialization of ASSLSBs has been seriously hampered by the electrolyte degradation, electrode/electrolyte interfacial deterioration, electrochemo-mechanical failure, lithium dendrite growth and electrode pulverization, etc. This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent research progresses on the solid-state electrolytes, sulfur-containing composite cathodes, lithium metal and lithium alloy anodes, and electrode/electrolyte interfaces in …

A Review On Solid-State Li-S Battery: From The Conversion Mechanism Of Sulfur To Engineering Design, Huan-Huan Jia, Chen-Ji Hu, Yi-Xiao Zhang, Li-Wei Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries attract sustained attention because of their ultrahigh theoretical energy density of 2567 Wh·kg–1 and the actual value over 600 Wh·kg–1. Solid-state Li-S batteries (SSLSBs) emerge in the recent two decades because of the enhanced safety when compared to the liquid system. As for the SSLSBs, except for the difference in the conversion mechanism induced by the cathode materials themselves, the physical-chemical property of solid electrolytes (SEs) also significantly affects their electrochemical behaviors. On account of various reported Li-S batteries, the advantages and disadvantages in performance and the failure mechanism are discussed in this review. …
