The conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) to carbon monoxide (CO) and other value-added products is an interesting approach for carbon-containing fuel synthesis using renewable and clean energy. The electrochemical reduction of CO2 is one of the promising strategies for the storage of intermittent renewable energy resources. The development of electrocatalysts with high activity and stability is vital in the electrochemical CO2 reduction process. In this study, copper and gold alloyed (CuAu) electrodes with nanodendritic structures were synthesized using a facile electrodeposition method. The CuAu nanodendrites with the atomic ratio of Cu to Au being approximately 1:1 …

Recent Advances In Glycerol Electrooxidation On Pt And Pd: From Reaction Mechanisms To Catalytic Materials, Wei-Yi Zhang, Xian-Yin Ma, Shou-Zhong Zou, Wen-Bin Cai
Journal of Electrochemistry
The conversion of glycerol to value-added products has received considerable attention recently because the booming biodiesel industry produces a large amount of glycerol as a byproduct. Among various means, electrocatalytic oxidation of glycerol is appealing owing to its environmental friendliness and high efficiency. However, electrooxidation of glycerol is very complex, involving multiple electron and proton transfer processes with many reaction pathways. How to rationally design catalysts with high selectivity toward targeted products is an overarching challenge, and of both fundamental and practical significance. In this minireview we aim to provide an overview of recent advancements in electrooxidation of glycerol focusing …

Progress Of Lithium-Ion Transport Mechanism In Solid-State Electrolytes, Bing-Kai Zhang, Lu-Yi Yang, Shun-Ning Li, Feng Pan
Journal of Electrochemistry
Inorganic crystalline solid electrolytes exhibit exceptional room-temperature ionic conductivities, giving them the potential to enable all-solid-state lithium (Li) - ion batteries. Developing new high-performance electrolytes is one of the most critical challenges to realize solid-state batteries, which requires understanding how chemistry facilitates fast ionic conduction and what the Li-ion migration mechanism is in inorganic solid electrolytes. In this review, we aim to summarize recent fundamental research progress in Li-ion transport, including crystal structure, behavior of ion migration (i.e., single-ion jump and multi-ions cooperative migration), and the relationship between ion migration and microstructure.
Generally, ion transport in crystalline structure can be …

Journal of Electrochemistry
Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are almost the core components of all electronic systems. With the rapid development of sciences and technologies, PCBs are gradually developing in the direction of multi-layer, thin and high-density wiring due to the functionalization, miniaturization, lightweight and high reliability of electronic products, as well as the widespread popularization of the subminiature package such as chip scale package (CSP) and ball grid array (BGA). Therefore, High-density interconnected printed circuit boards (HDI-PCBs) arise. Hole metallization is one of the core technologies in HDI-PCBs and includes two processes composed of conductive treatment and electron electroplating. Electroless copper plating, as …

In-situ EC-NMR technique can be used to monitor the electrochemical reaction process in real-time and to explain the reaction mechanism at the molecular level, which is a promising and non-destructive online detection technology. This article for the first time reports the design and production of in-situEC-NMR three-electrode single-chamber electrolytic cell using silicon-based boron-doped diamond (Si/BDD) as the working electrode. Research shows that the geometric size of Si/BDD electrode being 12.5 mm 1.2 mm 0.5 mm in the NMR detection zone is small and the thickness of the electrode material is thin, which accounts for the less hindrance …

Lithium ion battery (LIB) is a lightweight, rechargeable and powerful battery that is used widely from mobile phones to laptops to electric cars. It has many exceptional advantages such as high energy density, high output power, relatively low self-discharge, etc. However, it has some disadvantages such as safety issues, capacity loss, and expensive manufacture. LIB is composed of three main components: electrolytes, positive and negative electrodes. Researchers have been working on improving the performance of LIB for the past decade, but only a few have focused on investigating the electrolytes at the molecular level. In addition, the molecular mechanisms behind …

A new process was developed to recover high specific activity (no carrier added) 99Mo from electron-accelerator irradiated U3O8 or uranyl sulfate targets. The process leverages a novel solvent extraction scheme to recover Mo using di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid following uranium and transuranics removal with tri-n-butyl phosphate. An anion-exchange concentration column step provides a final purification, generating pure 99Mo intended for making 99Mo/99mTc generators. The process was demonstrated with irradiated uranium targets resulting in more than 95% 99Mo recovery and without presence of fission products or actinides in the product.

Surfaces with microscale roughness can entail dualscale hierarchical structures such as the recently reported nano/ microstructured surfaces produced in the laboratory (Wang et al. Nature 2020, 582, 55−57). However, how the dual-scale hierarchical structured surface affects the apparent wetting/ dewetting states of a water droplet, and the transitions between the states are still largely unexplored. Here, we report a systematic large-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulation study on the wetting/dewetting states of water droplets on various dual-scale nano/near-submicrometer structured surfaces. To this end, we devise slab-water/slab-substrate model systems with a variety of dual-scale surface structures and with different degrees of intrinsic …

Characterizing The Vibrational Spectra Of Hydrogen Bonded Systems With Molecular Dynamics Simulations And Quantum Chemical Methods, Dalton Boutwell
Master of Science in Chemical Sciences Theses
We apply and assess the utility of DMD for the purpose of investigating complex spectral features in N2H+···OC, N2D+···OC, C2O4H-, C2O4D- and (HCOOH)2. The proton transfer as a vibrational motion consists of diffuse qualities that can be accounted for with classical and quantum chemical analyses. Classical approaches yield a wealth of information about vibrational spectra at a reduced cost, as in the case of previously investigated N4H+. The isoelectronic N2H+···OC has …

We report the synthesis and structure of the second allotrope of technetium, β-Tc. Transformative pathways are accessed at extreme conditions using the laser-heated diamond anvil cell and confirmed with in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. β-Tc is fully recoverable to ambient conditions, although counter to our DFT calculations predicting a face-centered-cubic lattice, we observe a tetragonal structure (I4/mmm) that exhibits further tetragonal distortion with pressure. β-Tc has an expanded volume relative to the hcp ground state phase, that when doped with nitrogen has an unexpected volume lowering. Such anomalous behavior is possibly indicative of a rare electronic phase …
Fullerene And Tungsten Oxide Nanostructures-Based Electrocatalysts For All-Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries, Farah Ahmed El Diwany
Fullerene And Tungsten Oxide Nanostructures-Based Electrocatalysts For All-Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries, Farah Ahmed El Diwany
Theses and Dissertations
The vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is one of the most promising long-term energy storage solutions mainly due to its long service life and the independence of its energy capacity on power rating and vice versa. However, its relatively high capital cost limits its widespread deployment. Economic analysis reveals that a high-power density VRFB with decreased cell stack size can dramatically reduce the cost. The energy efficiency of a VRFB primarily depends on the kinetics of vanadium redox reactions that take place in the stack. Therefore, studying the effect of surface chemistry of electrodes on the kinetics of each …

Electrophilic aromatic substitution (EAS) reactions have long been a fundamental addition to sophomore-level organic chemistry classes, allowing students the opportunity to explore the electron donating and withdrawing effects of electrons contained in the substituents of the aromatic reactant. In this paper we present preliminary findings on the nitration of methylated biphenyls using kinetic and regioselective assessments to analyze steric influences on the planarization of 2-methylbiphenyl after EAS nitration. Our preliminary findings show that nitration favors the methylated phenyl ring of 2-methylbiphenyl, indicating that the steric influence of the methyl group restricts planarization of the carbocation intermediate. Furthermore, a competition nitration …

A reversible density driven insulator to metal to insulator transition in high-spin MnS2 is experimentally observed, leading with a colossal electrical resistance drop of 108 ω by 12 GPa. Density functional theory simulations reveal the metallization to be unexpectedly driven by previously unoccupied S22- σ3p∗ antibonding states crossing the Fermi level. This is a unique variant of the charge transfer insulator to metal transition for negative charge transfer insulators having anions with an unsaturated valence. By 36 GPa the emergence of the low-spin insulating arsenopyrite (P21/c) is confirmed, and the bulk metallicity is broken with the system returning to an …

In a topological semimetal with Dirac or Weyl points, the bulk-boundary correspondence principle predicts a gapless edge mode if the essential symmetry is still preserved at the surface. The detection of such topological surface state has been considered as the fingerprint prove for crystals with nontrivial topological bulk band. On the contrary, it has been proposed that even with symmetry broken at the surface, a new surface band can emerge in nonsymmorphic topological semimetals. The symmetry reduction at the surface lifts the bulk band degeneracies and produces an unusual “floating” surface band with trivial topology. Here, we first report quantum …

Computational Modeling Of Water And Proteins In Drug Discovery, Anthony Cruz Balberdy
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis aims to improve how structural and thermodynamic properties of water on protein surfaces can be exploited to aid early stage drug discovery and lead optimization. We first discuss our development of SSTMap, a public domain software suite that maps out the properties of water on biomolecular surfaces. We then show the utility of these maps in describing differences in binding affinities between congeneric pairs of ligands. We then discuss our use of solvation maps in the prospective discovery of novel binders to cytochrome C peroxidase. Finally, we present our creation and validation of a homology model of Interleukin-24 …
Photosensitization And Analytical Study On Reactive Oxygen Intermediates: Self-Sorting Surface Radicals And “On-Off” Sensitizer Function Mechanisms, Sarah J. Belh
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis consists of four chapters which are detailed below. Chapter 1 is an introductory chapter, which lays out the background and purpose of the research.
Chapter 2 describes a study of the mobility of alkoxy radicals on a surface by detection of their recombination product. A novel method called symmetrical product recombination (SRP) utilizes an unsymmetrical peroxide that upon sensitized homolysis recombines to a symmetrical product [R'OOR → R'O•↑ + •OR → ROOR]. This allows for self-sorting of the radical to enhance the recombination path to a symmetrical product, which has been used to deduce surface migratory aptitude. SPR …

High Performance Mixed-Matrix Electrospun Membranes For Ammonium Removal From Wastewaters, Shu-Ting Chen, Sumith Ranil Wickramasinghe, Xianghong Qian
Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Mixed-matrix electrospun membranes were developed to investigate ammonium removal from low ammonium concentration wastewaters for the first time. Particles derived from the inexpensive zeolite 13X were successfully incorporated into polyethersulfone (PES) matrices. The fabricated mixed-matrix electrospun membranes demonstrate high ammonium removal capacity reaching over 55 mg/gzeolite, more than 2.5 times higher than the previously fabricated mixed-matrix membranes via non-solvent induced phase inversion. Moreover, the membranes fabricated exhibit high permeability and ease of regeneration. Over 90% of total ammonium nitrogen (TAN) can be removed from low TAN wastewaters such as aquaculture wastewaters. In addition to zeolite 13X, other zeolite …

Exploring The Mechanism Of The Electrostatic Denaturation Of Double-Stranded Dna, Gayatri Raghu
Master's Theses
Electrostatic melting is an electrochemical tool that can be used to analyze the stability of DNA, allowing for the detection of various mutations in double-stranded DNA (dsDNA). Here, we explore the influence of electrostatic double layer formation on the unzipping of dsDNA to better comprehend the mechanism of this process. Previous studies by our lab show that the melting curve produced can distinguish between fully complementary 34-bp strands and a version of the same sequence in which one base pair has been replaced with a mismatch pair or detect and characterize the crosslinking of the dsDNA by anticancer drug cisplatin. …

The possibility of life on other planets has prompted philosophical debate and scientific research for years. As more of space is explored, and more is discovered about the origin of life, various planets and moons have come under speculation for the possibility of life. The icy moons of Saturn and Jupiter are prime examples. This is because of the presence of water-ice on their surfaces. However, there are many other important chemicals and elements necessary for life to develop and thrive. One such element is phosphorus. In order to analyze the ice on the surface of these moons and other …
The Reactivity Of Metal Phosphites: Oxidative Rate Analysis, Jamie Kitchens
The Reactivity Of Metal Phosphites: Oxidative Rate Analysis, Jamie Kitchens
Symposium of Student Scholars
Phosphorous compounds are involved in many of the biomolecular processes deemed fundamental for life. DNA, ATP, and phospholipids are a few of the molecules where phosphates can be found in the body. Phosphates are geochemically characterized by their low solubility and poor reactivity. This has led to the investigation of reaction mechanisms that could lead to the formation of the phosphorous compounds found in organisms. The oxidation of phosphite into phosphate could be how phosphates were introduced to life, due to phosphites being more soluble and more reactive than phosphates. We will present the synthesis and oxidation reactivity of four …

Energy Requirements for Abiotic Production of Phosphorous Compounds at the
Ice-Schreibersite Interface
The Abbott-Lyon Lab is investigating the chemistry at the interface of simple ices and a meteoritic mineral analogue. Phosphorous is a key component of numerous biomolecules necessary for life. Lack of an abundance of biologically accessible mineral sources of phosphates on Earth, termed “The Phosphorous Problem,” has led some origin-of-life scientists to look to extraterrestrial sources like meteoritic metal phosphides as possible sources of available phosphates. Schreibersite (Fe2NiP) is a common mineral in iron meteorites and a plausible source of biologically accessible phosphorous. This study will …

The search for life outside of Earth has raised questions about how life began have intrigued origin-of-life researchers, such as the incorporation of phosphorus into biomolecules. Phosphorus exists on Earth mostly as phosphate, PO43-, which is insoluble and unreactive in the geochemical conditions of the early Earth. The challenge of incorporating phosphorus into biomolecules is known as the “phosphorus problem,” prompting investigations of reactive phosphorus species delivered to the prebiotic Earth. Phosphorus-laden meteorites delivered schreibersite (Fe,Ni)3P, a possible mineral source of phosphorus recognized for its redox chemistry potential and observed reactivity with aqueous …

Recent studies have indicated that nitramide (NH2NO2) may be formed more plentifully in the atmosphere than previously thought, while also being a missing source of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) via catalyzed isomerization. To validate the importance of NH2NO2 in the Earth’s atmosphere, the ground and first electronic excited states of NH2NO2 were characterized and its photochemistry was investigated using multireference and coupled cluster methods. NH2NO2 is non-planar and of singlet multiplicity in the ground state while exhibiting large out-of-plane rotation in the triplet …

Suzuki Coupling Catalyzed By (8-(Dimesitylboryl)Quinoline)Palladium(0) Species: A Theoretical Analysis, Haley S. Rust
Honors Thesis
The Suzuki reaction is a catalyzed cross-coupling reaction which is of upmost importance in the formation of carbon-carbon (C-C) bonds in modern organic synthesis. Recently a new catalyst including an 8-(dimesitylboryl)quinoline for the coupling of aryl halides with phenylboronic acids was synthetized. We synthesized ligand that includes a frustrated Lewis pair, (quinolin-8-yl)dimesitylborane (DMBQ), complexed it with group X metals (nickel (Ni), palladium (Pd), and platinum (Pt)), and studied the process of oxidative addition with carbon-fluorine (C-F) bonds and activation towards Suzuki coupling. Mayer bond analysis and electron localization function maps showed a bond between the boron center in the ligand …
Investigations Into Effects Of Modified Prolines On Cis-Trans Isomers And Polypeptide Secondary Structure & Prediction Of Spectroscopic Properties Of Phthalonitriles For Characterization, Jeffrey Raab
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Proline is a unique amino acid because it is the only amino acid whose side chain wraps around and bonds back to the peptide backbone. This ring shape helps proteins form conformations which would otherwise not be possible such as hairpin turns. The cis/trans isomerization of the peptide bond between the preceding amino acid (Xaa) and Proline is important in determining how the secondary structure folds. Thus, being able to control the cis/trans isomerization is important when a specific conformation is desired; Proline can be modified to get make the equilibrium shift whichever way is needed. The modifications …

Since the advent and optimization of the Hartree-Fock method, quantum chemistry has been utilized to investigate systems operating on timeframes and environments traditionally unavailable to bench-top chemistry. As computational methods have grown more robust and less time consuming, quantum chemistry has been utilized to investigate a range of fields, including the steadily growing discipline of computational astrochemistry. Through the lens of computational astrochemistry, chemistry that occurred billions of years ago can be explored with equal clarity to that which is currently happening in the cosmos. The work presented throughout this thesis is a series of investigations into different timeframes of …

Understanding Shear Thinning Using Brownian Dynamics Simulation, Mackenzie Nicole Wall
Honors Theses
In this work, we study the changes in structure during the shear thinning regime using Brownian Dynamics with a simple steady-state shear flow of binary charged colloidal suspension. Previous research has analyzed the viscosity, radial distribution, elasticity and plasticity of materials with rheo-SANS experimentation; however, less research has been conducted to replicate the experiment through computer simulations. With Brownian Dynamic Simulation, this study was able to reproduce the results obtained in a recent rheo-SANS experiment and it also explored the viscosity, radial distribution, elastic and plastic behavior of a system under different parameters. The comparison of simulated data with experimental …
