Journal of Electrochemistry

Graphene nanosheets (GS) and carbon nanotubes have been considered as good catalysts candidates for applications in energy conversion and storage. However, hybrids of GS and carbon nanotubes are always formed in transition metal-based nitrogen-doped system, making the system quite complex for exploring the structure-activity relationship. To prepare the catalysts with desired species controllably, we try to adjust the outcomes with the effect of nitrogen on the growth of carbon nanotubes. In this work, a series of Fe-N co-doped carbon hybrid catalysts containing N-doped GS or hybrids of GS/bamboo carbon nanotubes (BCNTs) or BCNTs were obtained with one-step pyrolyzed method. To …

Modeling Chemical Reactivity In Aqueous And Organic Systems: From Electronic Structure Methods To Force Field Development, Caitlin Gibson Bresnahan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Modeling reactivity in chemical systems has evolved dramatically in line with the capabilities of modern computing. Despite the advances in computational ability, the level in which one can model a system depends on a number of factors including the region of reactivity, size of the system, level of sophistication required in the molecular description, and so on. Electronic structure methods allow for a detailed description of the potential energy surface and inherently include all essential physics required for reactivity to occur, however these methods are limited by their computational expense. On the other hand, force fields allow for an atomistic …

Computational Studies Of Thermal Properties And Desalination Performance Of Low-Dimensional Materials, Yang Hong

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

During the last 30 years, microelectronic devices have been continuously designed and developed with smaller size and yet more functionalities. Today, hundreds of millions of transistors and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor cells can be designed and integrated on a single microchip through 3D packaging and chip stacking technology. A large amount of heat will be generated in a limited space during the operation of microchips. Moreover, there is a high possibility of hot spots due to non-uniform integrated circuit design patterns as some core parts of a microchip work harder than other memory parts. This issue becomes acute as stacked microchips get …

Quantum Chemical Calculations Applied To Somo–Homo Conversion And Vibrationally Averaged Nmr Shielding Parameters, Erik Johnson

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The inversion of frontier orbitals of free radicals was studied using density functional theory calculations in Gaussian 09. Comparisons of images of orbitals in GaussView was used to assess the relative positions of singly occupied and doubly occupied orbitals and to determine which was the highest in energy. A variety of organic free radicals were studied including several radical anions and also a neutral radical. It was found that cross-conjugation appears to be a factor in whether or not molecules show SOMO-HOMO conversion. Cross-conjugation is when two unsaturated groups are conjugated to a third unsaturated group but are not conjugated …

Aerobic Photolysis Mecbl: Structure And Electronic Properties Of Cbl-O-O-Ch3 Intermediate., Aida Bazarganpour

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The photolysis of methylcobalamin (coenzyme B12) results in homolytic cleavage of the Co-C bond, forming cob(II)alamin and the Co(II)/CH3 radical pair (RP) which further react with O2 to form the intermediate (R-O-O-Cbl) that involves in the aerobic photolysis. It has been suggested that the key intermediate (R-O-O-Cbl) involves in aerobic photolysis is the insertion of O2 between the Co-C bond. Clearly, the exposure of light is needed to induce the activation Co-C bond for generating the Co(II)/CH3 radical pair (RP). The intermediate (R-O-O-Cbl) undergoes further decomposition to aldehyde as the final product of aerobic …

Stereodynamical Control Of A Quantum Scattering Resonance In Cold Molecular Collisions, Pablo G. Jambrina, James F.E. Croft, Hua Guo, Mark Brouard, Balakrishnan Naduvalath, F. Javier Aoiz

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

Cold collisions of light molecules are often dominated by a single partial wave resonance. For the rotational quenching of HD (v=1, j=2) by collisions with ground state para-H2, the process is dominated by a single L=2 partial wave resonance centered around 0.1 K. Here, we show that this resonance can be switched on or off simply by appropriate alignment of the HD rotational angular momentum relative to the initial velocity vector, thereby enabling complete control of the collision outcome.

Simulations Of Strong-Field Ionization In Molecules Using Tuned Range-Separated Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory, Adonay Sissay

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Strong-field ionization and the resulting electronic dynamics are important for a range of processes such as high harmonic generation, photodamage, charge resonance enhanced ionization, and ionization-triggered charge migration. Modeling ionization dynamics in molecular systems from first-principles can be challenging due the large spatial extent of the wavefunction which stresses the accuracy of basis sets, and the intense fields which require non-perturbative time-dependent electronic structure methods. In this dissertation, we develop a time dependent density functional theory approach which uses a Gaussian-type orbital (GTO) basis set to capture strong-field ionization rates and dynamics in atoms and small molecules. This involves propagating …

A Simple And Effective Way To Overcome Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Of Platinum Surfaces In Direct Formic Acid Fuel Cells, Yaser M. Asal Mr., Islam M. Al-Akraa Dr, Sohair A. Darwish Ms

Chemical Engineering

A glassy carbon (GC) electrode modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs), Pt/MWCNTs-GC, has been introduced for formic acid electro-oxidation (FAO). A similar loading of PtNPs has been conserved for a proper comparison between the Pt/MWCNTs-GC and the unmodified Pt/GC electrodes. The modification with MWCNTs could enhance the loading of PtNPs onto the GC electrode in a way that minimizes its agglomeration and increases its dispersion in the CNTs network. This not only increases the surface area exposed to the reaction but also interrupts the contiguity of the Pt active sites minimizing the adsorption of the poisoning …

A Promising Modification Of Pt Surfaces With Cnts For Decreasing Poisoning Impact In Direct Methanol Fuel Cells, Yaser M. Asal Mr., Islam M. Al-Akraa Dr, Aya A. Khalifa Ms.

Chemical Engineering

Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are clean energy sources that have many applications due to the high energy density of methanol as a fuel. However, this type of fuel cells (FCs) has limitations that are preventing it from being commercialized. One such limitation is the adsorption of intermediates such as CO into the surface of the Platinum (Pt) catalyst during methanol oxidation (MO) which deactivates its active sites, where the reaction is taking place, and leads to poisoning of the electrode over the long term. In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been introduced to the Pt-modified glassy carbon …
